Watch this before buying a serger if you sew a lot of layers! This is an in depth comparison of the Brother 1034D, Singer X5004HD, and Juki MO-644D. They are all very good sergers, but one can serge through 6 layers of denim.

I've had my Brother 1034d for 14 years now, had it serviced perhaps 5 times, and changed the blades out once (I think they're due for another change). It just keeps going! It's so easy to thread, so I never use the tie-off shortcut. I can't bring myself to purchase a fancier serger because this one just keeps chugging on! I appreciate you showing the threading on the other machines. I didn't realize others weren't as easy as the Brother!

I love your energy and videos. I bought a Brother 1034D about a year ago and it sat under my sewing table. Admittedly I was still learning to sew with a regular sewing machine, but given that I mostly sew men’s clothes (our family of 4 is all guys) I figured I would get into it eventually. But honestly things other people said about serging intimidated me a bit. Then I needed to power through some pyjama builds… so I thought I’d give it a whirl. It was easy to thread, not hard to adjust tensions (and in fact it sewed like butter on the standard tensions), and I LOVE it! So fast, so easy to “steer” fabric, so neat and clean a 4 thread stitch! I’m sold on the Brother 1034D, and your video confirms that I made a good decision! (I started with a Brother CE1000 and have just purchased a Brother ST150HDH, so I am thankful for all your videos!) Now I need a coverstitch machine…. lol

I like the new features on the new one better, except that I read the old one can do 2 more smaller stitch lenghths, and the manner to remove the knife may be easier perhaps? But I do fine with mine. Its easy to use and there are a lot of improvements on it in my opinion, except for the 2 I mentioned.

I work for a dealer that sells Brother, Juki, and Janome machines and I can tell you that Juki wins hands down for sewing and serging. A little side note though, we repair more of the 1034D and Singer Heavy Duty sewing machines and sergers than any other newer model. The Heavy Duty machines are easy to knock out of time and the Brother 1034 is cheaply made and we've had people break multiple parts of the machine.

I just bought a Singer S0235 ($600 NZD) - it’s a recent release from Singer. I was thinking of buying the Brother 4234D ($750 NZD) and went in to try the demo. The automatic threader wasn’t working very well (which is one of the main reasons I was interested in it) and it was a bit loud / clackity when sewing (although the stitching was beautiful) so I asked if there were any other options. The consultant said she wasn’t a big fan of the heavy duty Singers. But there was a cheaper Singer overlocker that sews beautifully and worth considering. We pulled it out of the box, threaded it (rather easy color coded instructions) and I fell in love. It sews really smoothly with a love stitch and is perfect for my home needs. I was also stoked that it was cheaper than the option I was considering. It’s a gorgeous, dusty Yale blue colour. The instruction booklet is great. Gives you a chart to tell you how to set the tensions depended on what material you’re sewing. We tested it sewing 4-6 layers of calico and it’s a little workhorse. I’m so happy with my purchase. 😍 The Singer S0235 is definitely an option for home sewers and diyers! 🤓

I came across your video by accident but love it. Little over a decade ago, I bought Singer serger. That thing wouldn't sew more than an inch on regular weight cotton fabric. Drove me crazy for 2 days and I returned it. Brother was my 2nd option so I got it. I still have and love it and it's been over a decade. I actually got used 2nd Brother serger, Lock 925D which has dark thread on it but honestly it takes me literally less than 2 minutes to thread the whole thing. I think it takes longer to put the thread through the needle eyes lol. There are people suggesting sergers with air threading etc but I prefer to know my machines. I mean it's basic knowledge to know hot to thread your sewing machines. It's like not knowing how to fuel up your car.

I truly appreciate the work you do when you are comparing the different sewing products that you use. FIRST, you should truly be SPONSORED by BROTHER at least!! 2). The comparisons are unbiased. 3). You are concise and you always make it known it is YOUR opinion and you don't hide the sewing demonstrations. This was very informative and truly appreciated! As a decent sewer, layers are important when say, sewing a tweed or heavy wool coat with interfacing AND lining. I have Brother sewing/serger machines, but I started on Singer machines, one was 30+years old (it has a bullet-shaped bobbin).

@sapphirecamui6447
@sapphirecamui6447 3 года назад
@@BlueprintDIY Yes, early sewing machine models have an oval shuttle and bobbin. It's called a vibrating shuttle. It's pretty interesting to learn about sewing machines and how they evolved. i still don't understand exactly how they work.. People who don't sew, can't understand why you do this or that. For instance, i saw the store-bought items with various pieces that were stay-stitched. I didn't understand why would anyone bother to sew through a single layer of fabric... last year i found out why - to stabilize the edge of that garment piece, as stay-stitching is usually done on curves - arm holes, top of the sleeves, necklines...

I have a Singer H-D sewing machine (purchased based on your review, actually), and was hopeful the Singer H-D serger would be as good. But, you've sold me on the Brother. The fact that yours is 5 years and going strong is perhaps the best testament to its quality and also that you still highly recommend it after all that time. I haven't been sewing much lately, so can't justify buying it at the moment, but I'm really impressed with its performance based on your review here. Thank you for your "Surger Showdown". I own a Singer Stylist (looks just like the Heavy Duty) and what you said is true for it too. Mine shakes terribly as well and it's NOT because of the fabric. The problem with it sewing and becoming hung up is what I experienced while sewing satin pillowcases! With almost every pillowcase I felt like the machine might break. I did break a needle and replaced it with a Universal needle and had no more problems. I bought mine thru HSN and it came with several feet. I'm glad I have it and don't see buying a new one any time soon.

I have owned the Brother 1034D for more than a decade. I often use decorative (metallic, fuzzy, stretch, etc) in the upper loopers for rolled hems and lettuce edge. Gorgeous rolled hems. Threading is not my favorite pastime, but once you understand how the serger works, it gets easier and easier to do. I've gone a whole year without having to re-thread.

Sewing upholstery fabrics is tough too. It’s so thick and sometimes you need a machine that can handle the layers. I have been looking at the Brother as opposed to the Singer so this review was very helpful. Thanks Angelina! 👍🥰

I'm a newbie, brought a singer from HSN 10 yrs. never touch it until the last yr. due to COVID, watching videos learn to make a face mask, gotten good at it, made some for the whole family, fast forward, I switch to Brothers, really like it, but I say to myself, I want to learn to make my own clothes or like yourself mock clothes, etc. I ran across Mimi G. videos, she teaches newbies to sew. and she said people should invest in a Serger ( didn't know what she was talking about ) so I found your video, Brother 1034D was her #1 choice, so I just purchase one today, thank you for taking the time to review the serger. I'm excited to add sewing to my resume, recently went back to school to get my degree in Criminal Justice after 50 yrs. THANK YOU AGAIN... BEAUTIFUL LADY :)

I miss my brother 1034D serger, I regret selling it when I moved to the U.K. should have kept it. It is a great serger, had it for 8 years and worked beautifully, never a problem, only had to replace the blade once or twice. I now have a singer I bought at Lidl for £ 130 and it just doesn’t compare, not the same quality.

Thank you so much for this video, I’ve had the brother 1034D for years - it’s way more than 5yrs but I don’t know exactly and I love it. I wasn’t sure if I had to attach a different presser foot to go through lots of layers so it was great to see that I don’t have to. Thank you! 😀

Great video....I sew thru lots of layers when doing quilting, including batting on my 1034D. I wanted the Babylock fancy machine that practically threads itself and has the coverstitch, but I've gotten used to threading my 1034D now and can imitate a coverstitch look with a twin needle on the sewing machine after serging. I use my serger maybe even more than the sewing machine. TFS.

I'm really surprised that the Juki had issues. I have had a variety of sewing machines, including Brother, Juki, Singer, Pfaff, Viking, and more. I always go back to my Jukis because of how powerful they are, even the Juki serger I had. I honestly don't enjoy using my serger though so I sold it, lol. I am looking forward to watching more of your videos.

I’m surprised the Juki choked on the 6 layers. I’ve had mine for years and it sews everything and never feels like it’s working hard at all. I’ll have to try sewing more layers and see how it does.

Did you try sewing multiple layers? How did it do?
@gayanderson2242
@gayanderson2242 Год назад
@@Tyreselynn I did, and it choked similar to the way your test Juki did. That said, I’ve never had a need to put that much fabric through it at once, so it isn’t really a issue for me. I really like the stitch quality and it handles specialty threads and even fine yarn well for decorative stitches. I enjoy your videos and this smack down was very interesting.

Thanks for the review! I ordered the singer heavy duty on Amazon yesterday and decided to cancel my order and give the brother a try. I had a singer before and it started causing me problems it was very old so I thought I would get a newer version. But after watching your video I decided to get the brother instead to try something different. The singer definitely shakes pretty bad so I agree with that so hopefully I will have better luck with the brother. Seems like a lot of ppl are having great results with brother. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

Thank you so much for doing such a thorough comparison of these three machines!!! I'm trying to figure out which serger I should buy next. I'm working on a Brother 1134D, which doesn't have a thread-catcher (not a deal breaker for me), but I bought it used and it has its limits. For an example, I cannot sew more than 4 layers of knits (let alone more than 2 layers of thick fleece). It really limits me in my choice of fabric and/or patterns. But most definitely not the Singer Heavy Duty serger as I sew a lot at night and I cannot have the whole house shaking from the machine. Then I constantly change my threads for colour or different quality. So the threading difficulty with the Juki doesn't make it appealing to me. So maybe a brand new Brother 1034D...The search continues!

This is a really good comparison video. I actually have a Singer SO230 (sort of the step below the one you showed here) and I actually find that one to be not horrible to thread. Definitely easier than my old EZLock from the 80s. That thing is an absolute nightmare to thread. EDIT: I'm also glad to know that my Singer isn't the only lout one. I was beginning to think that mine had an issue because of how loud it is.
