While it is widely believed that during the "succession crisis" Brigham Young looked and sounded like Joseph Smith, what actually happened?

I read one time where there was an estimated approx 160 journals available from people who were there that day, who never wrote a single word about this. Surely if it truly happened every person that kept a journal would have given great detail about it. That’s something no one would forget to mention. The same tall tale is reminiscent of Lorenzo seeing the Savior in the hallway of the temple, as well as his sister, Eliza, remembering years after Joseph‘s death, that an angel with a flaming sword visited Joseph and threatened to kill him if he didn’t accept plural marriage. Joseph never said anything about it (because it never happened) and no one ever talked about it until one of Brigham’s many lady’s remembered it in full detail many years later and it eventually became part of “true” LDS history. If 160+ early Mormon journal keepers never even mentioned it, it definitely never happened.

If we go by the argument that "Joseph never said anything about it" then it could be concluded that 99.99% of the things in my life I said I really never said because there is no record of it. I don't keep a journal of my life. I really don't care to. Everything I have said and done in my life is historical regardless if I leave any evidence for future generations to believe it or not.

2 15 24 I am so enjoying these pods! Only very recently have I learned of Connor, through another good man, Scott Palmer, and his COWs (!😊) I am a missionary convert and now retired law enforcement. I wholeheartedly agree with the explanations of group memories, even if by way of Dialogue. "Eye witness" accounts of events are the holy bane of any investigation. There's a reason multiple statements are taken at an incident... and then often secondary and even tertiary statements. The personal filters of each witness are the determining criteria for all they saw, heard, and "felt" at the event. My own filters re BY include his personality as described by others before the murders, his recorded expressions toward Emma, and not the least, his enjoyment of stage acting. Hey, good news. We can put this on our list of things to get the real scoop on when the videos in the sky are available.

Hmmmmm.... all critical observations about August 8th, are reminiscent of the same criticisms directed at Joseph Smith's first vision. Verdict: Brigham Young was in fact called of God and chosen as His prophet. The fruits of Brigham's life demonstrate this. 21st century furries nipping at the heels of the Lion of the Lord.... disappointing. Sigh.

This quote is from my ancestor's account (Zerah Pulsipher ) "Sidney made his plea. Brigham Young began to speak and at that time I sat with my back towards him, as did many others. When Brigham Young spoke he spoke with the voice of Joseph. We turned around to see Brigham speaking in Joseph’s voice and beheld Joseph’s mantle that had fallen on him. The people understood it and the same Brigham stood at the head of the twelve. Therefore, the Church turned to him."

Thank you for sharing. I have an ancestors journal that also describes this sacred event. As a side note, I’ve listened to probably 15 different musings from Connor now and it’s interesting to me how he talks about how the church is without sacred experiences in general (ie. Ministering of angels and so forth) yet then he sits here discounting and demeaning sacred events as if he had absolute evidence they didn’t happen. Just an interesting observation.

I'm not sure what to make of all of this, but it reminds me how much I appreciate personal revelation, and the Church's emphasis on knowing things for ourselves. I asked God in 1994 at the MTC by my bedside if the Church was His (among other things) and He told me with absolute crystal clarity that it was true, such that I knew that it was true at least as surely as I knew that I existed, in one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Moroni's promise is true, God still reveals His will to us, and anyone else can enjoy this same experience that I did if they will ask Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus Christ with humble faith, real intent, et cetera. So, if ye lack wisdom, then please ask of God (see James 1:5), as Joseph Smith Jr did and as I did and as so many others have done.

Just a thought but could it be God was confirming the truthfulness of the BoM and of the prophet JS to you? Personally, that’s what I have found to be in my own experience when reflecting on my own spiritual witnesses. God was confirming to me that the BoM was true and JS translated it, rather than that of the church being “true”. Not discounting your witness at all but just sharing my own experience.

"I am more afraid that this people have so much confidence in their leaders that they will not inquire for themselves of God whether they are led by him. I am fearful they settle down in a state of blind self-security, trusting their eternal destiny in the hands of their leaders with a reckless confidence that in itself would thwart the purposes of God in their salvation, and weaken that influence they could give to their leaders, did they know for themselves, by the revelations of Jesus, that they are led in the right way. Let every man and woman know, by the whispering of the Spirit of God to themselves, whether their leaders are walking in the path the Lord dictates, or not." -- Brigham Young
@josephaney

I agree with this statement. I used to be one of those who had so much confidence in the leaders of the church, that I believed they were just and holy men even though there was evidence to the contrary. I was born again in 1973. I was 24 years of age. Harold Lee was president of the church and there were things that Lee said that did not set well with me, but love and forgive and forget about. Do not find fault with the leaders of the church and all that. Well, he did not last too long as president and then there was Kimball. When Kimball came along, there was a saying that every member of the church should know for himself if the new president is really the man the Lord wants as president. Because of my negative thoughts about Lee, I thought that it was a good idea to ask about Kimball. I asked about Kimball and I got a clear answer Kimball was the man the Lord wanted to be president at that point in time. At the same time, I was going through the trials of sanctification and one of the trials required me to open communication with Kimball to fulfill a sacrifice for the Lord. Because of my communication with him, I was taken to the edge of excommunication, but I passed the that test and I was not excommunicated. I finished the trials of sanctification in 1983 when the Lord came to me in the Logan temple and sanctified me and made my calling and election sure. Kimball died in 1985. Benson became president so I asked the Lord if Benson really was the man he wanted as president. The Lord said to me. "He is in there. I have to work with whoever I get." You can imagine that stopped me cold. "What do you mean by that?" He said, "To tell you the truth, it has been a long time since I actually called a man to church leadership. Most of the time it does not matter and there are some I can work with better than others. I could work with Kimball, not so much with Benson." Come to find out, Benson was like Biden is, He had dementia and most of the time he puttered around his apartment muttering, except at conference time, when he would rally to put on a good show. It was during Benson's presidency that I started to question the holiness of the Leaders of the church. When the Lord sanctified me, I had that confidence Brigham was talking about but because of my experience with Kimball and Benson, I was not so sure anymore. I asked the Lord how I could know for sure if the leaders of the church were sanctified. He told me to ask them and listen to what they say. Out of the heart the mouth speaks. A sanctified heart will bear testimony of that.. I started listening to the leaders of church and discovered they never talked about themselves being born again and never said anything about how to become sanctified. I started to question them in letters asking them. To make a long story short, eventually I was accused of apostacy for questioning their holiness and excommunicated from the church in 1991. In spite of being excommunicated, I still deceived myself to think they were at least just, even if they were not holy and love an forgive and life goes on. Then in 2010 I got red pilled. A friend of mine went with the missionaries to the visitor's center in Independence MO. There is a craven image there called Christus. It is a copy of the image in SLC. The elder waved his hand towards the image and asked my friend, "What do you think of our God." My friend replied, "Your god is a stone with a face carved on it? I am sorry, but I cannot belong to an idolatrous church." My friend asked me if he did the right thing. In that moment I recognized the face on the image is the face of Lucifer and told me friend, yes, he did the right thing. I investigated now the image got there and discovered it was erected by David McKay in 1966. I found out later that McKay had been an Illuminati recruit while on his mission and the Illuminati who had already infiltrated church leadership maneuvered him to become an apostle and then cleared the way for him to become president of the church. In these days, all the general authorities are Illuminati. Pray about it and the Lord will tell you that what I am telling you is true.

I’ve always known it was three years between the death of Joseph and the reorganization of the first presidency with Brigham Young. The only new thing you’ve brought is a bunch of shade on the miracle. By doctrine, and it’s in the D&C, the Apostles are equal in authority to the first presidency. I’ve never heard that the city council is equal in authority to the First Presidency, when it comes to leading the church. I have heard the more majestic versions of the transfiguration and I’ve heard the hit and miss versions.

I ask this sincerely because this is something I have been grappling with on and off for a while. I just feel like the truth claims espoused by the Church really hinge on this question. All those answers and no answer. I would encourage you to study the scriptures. I have decided I am no longer worthy of a Temple recommend because of the word semantics, the definition of Prophet, seer and revelator... Brigham was more of the High Priest of the Church like Caiaphas was. If one looks at the way Brigham acted and compare it to prophets in the scriptures, which did he act like? Was he like Moses? No. Was he like Alma? No. Was he like King Noah? YES. That being said, the core is still intact much as it was with the Jews when they would fall into wickedness. I have a testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith and of the Book of Mormon. The spirit has refused to testify that Brigham Young was ever called of God to lead the church, he may have good quotes, probably plagiarized from Joseph, but not prophetic... This is especially true when you see his fruit. He robbed from the poor and the needy. HE took the tithes to enrich himself and the other 12. Even President Nelson has emphasized that Joseph Smith is OUR prophet. The prophet of our dispensation.

as far as I remember this wasn't even written down until 25 years after the event. And became more embellished with every telling. The gospels were written a very long time after the death of Jesus too. So what? Just because some accounts were recorded decades later doesn’t mean they didn’t happen. Seems like the better conclusion is to state that it *may* have happened. And not everything has to be consistent. There are different accounts of many things in history (including first vision) and of course they would vary depending on the person and their understanding of what they perceived was happening. You believe one biography and dismiss others. Sometimes it’s better to state “I don’t know” rather than definitive statements like it was definitely false. Many people recorded it.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is *filled* with lies, abominations, and iniquities (see Connor's past musing on the definition of iniquity), and I've just about had enough of it.

Questioning history is one thing, questioning the living "oracles" is another. As long as Connor bends the knee to our Boneman/Brotherhood of Death (Skull and Bones secret society member, which God states is "most abominable in the sight of God" -ETHER 8) Prophet, Russell M Nelson, and doesn't question him and his leadership, Connor should be fine. Sustaining has nothing to do with the dead but only the living. However, Russell stands on the same argument for his validation to be called prophet, seer, and revelator as Brigham Young. Once you question the living, then you will be damned. Profound Musing! I think it's clear now why Brigham Young had a massive book burning and tried to destroy Lucy Mack Smith's book on the history of her family, a book she claims God commanded her to write mind you. Who in their right mind, let alone a supposed prophet of God does that unless. . . . So many questions I just want the truth and yet, revisionist history can't get out of the way. Above all what has personally convinced me that the mantle fell to Brigham is that his approach in the days following the passing of the Prophet is the Spirit and that Brigham was essentially saying “I’m not saying I’m the successor, but I know Sidney it’s not you.” Brigham’s patience stands in contrast to Sidney’s aggressiveness. The durability of the western Church also confirms that it had enough of the power and authority to continue the work. To not raise questions about the potential for revisionist history would be irresponsible of us today, and it does not in any detract from the authenticity of who holds the keys today. Honestly, I think your post may cast doubt in the hearts of many members. I also question why someone would remain in a church they claim to believe in when they cast doubt upon the history of the leadership. I for one question if there is not some ulterior motive. Here is my position! Either the leadership is lying or those claiming these events are untrue. As for some not recording the events even though they were present says three things to me. First, they were not really present. Second, they did not experience the event because of worthiness or doubting what they saw (faith) Third, they hold it sacred and choose not to share. Regardless, I feel your post may cast doubt on the leadership leading members away from the church and away from God. If you cast doubt on those you claim to sustain it is not in keeping with sacred covenants. One cannot have one foot in the church following the leadership and one outside following someone who casts doubt upon the early leadership. A man cannot serve two masters. Either you believe this is Christ's church and the leadership is called of God or you don't period. I have tried several times to watch many of your videos through to the end. To be honest I have not been able to watch any of them to the end. I am not doubting your desire to share what you believe to be true. I feel in my spirit that your words are not true. I therefore have chosen not to watch or even try to watch anymore of your videos. There are many in the church and out of the church casting doubt on the leadership. Interesting point about choosing not to share because of it being sacred. Our knowledge of the attendees intentions is limited, and you’ve rightly pointed out that even the journals may not contain the whole account. I’m one active member who is inspired by this video. Every leader in church history had flaws which may have included lying at times. Sustaining leaders past and present doesn’t preclude pointing out mistakes or blurry parts of the history. As long as I can sustain 51% of my leader’s past and present decisions I will remain a member. But learning the truth matters to me. I think there is room for both perspectives.

Oof. So many in all of these comments have their foundations built on the sand of fallible earthly leaders of the church, and not on Jesus Christ. With a foundation built on Jesus Christ, the reality that Brigham Young's transfiguration never happened is mildly interesting, but doesn't even begin to touch my testimony in my Savior. It's just the truth that starting with Brigham Young, all the general leaders of the church have been a mixed bag of righteous and wicked: some with good intentions and others with bad, some called through inspiration and others called through social connections. The teaching that the president of the church will never lead the church astray is false doctrine and straight from Satan himself, and ironically, it has been the cause of most of the in the church deception for over a century. But the truth remains that the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have led the members astray, sometimes intentionally and sometimes unintentionally (exhibit A would be c0v|d, but I have hundreds of other examples), *but that makes no difference for my testimony of the things that truly matter most.* I know that God is still our Father; Jesus is still our Messiah; the Book of Mormon is still true; Joseph Smith still restored the church and the priesthood Keys; and yes, that priesthood and those keys are still here, even though most people are not living worthy of them; and yes, the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are still under condemnation, and will be until enough of us repent, and follow *the Lord,* and not these mortal men (unless they also choose to follow the Lord, but then we'll just be following them incidentally as a result of both of us following Jesus).

I have had several conversations with the Lord on this topic. So let's start a new conversation. The Lord's answers are in quotations. Lord how is the succession of the presidency of the church supposed to be? "Let me ask you; How is one supposed to be called to leadership in the church?" Well, Joseph said by prophecy and the laying on of hands. "Yes, and what does it mean to be called by prophecy?" I suppose it would be by revelation. "Alright, but what kind of revelation? What is prophecy?" Well, the spirit of prophecy is the testimony that you are the Christ, the son of the living God. "So what it means to be called by prophecy is that the candidate, at least, knows that I am the Christ the son of the living God. However, one having the testimony that I have forgiven him and that he is born again has preference over one who only know that I am the son of God. And again, one whom I have sanctified and made his calling and election sure is to have preference over all the others. So getting back to the original question, It is my will that the president of the church be sanctified but if there are no sanctified men that want to accept the calling, then at least the president of the church should be justified because of his repentance." Now the question at hand to day is the succession of the presidency after Joseph's death. How should that have gone down? "Do you remember how the first council of the twelve was called?" If I remember my history, they were volunteers. "Do you remember reading that an elder is an apostle?" Yes. "All elders are suppose to be apostles. For this purpose they are called to the priesthood to go out and to call the people to repentance and to baptize and to do miracles. The council of twelve apostles was to be the governing body of all the apostles to instruct the elders and assign them to fields of labor. I had instructed Joseph that in the event of his impending death, he was to either designate a successor or leave it to the twelve to to find a successor. Joseph had hoped for Hyrum to be his successor and made him the assistant president. Since Hyrum chose to die with Joseph, the duty to find a successor rested upon the twelve. Brigham did the right thing to take over the leadership of the church. The job of finding a sanctified man to succeed Joseph was given to the twelve. Not finding one who wanted the job, it finally fell on Brigham to ascend to that role. It has always been the duty of the twelve to seek out a sanctified man to be secede a dead president. Sad to say, it has been a long time since there was a sanctified man in the presidency of the church and in these days, there are no sanctified or justified men in in the leadership for the church at all." Wow, that is a scary thought. Why are they not justified? "I, the Lord cannot justify men who do not repent and none of the leaders of the church have repented. They have set up graven images and have led the people into idolatry. They are thieves who steal the tithes from the poor to support their idolatry. They are murderers because they allow abortion in the church an many of them are pedophiles. I gave a commandment that there should be no divorce and none shall divide that which I have joined together and they commit adultery to allow divorce and cancel marriage covenants. They bear false witness to say they are apostles and prophets when I have not called them and they do not have the spirit of prophecy. They draw near unto me with their mouths and with their lips they honor mem but their hearts are far from me, teaching for commandments the precepts of men, for example, covid mandates. Never have I even said that men should trust in the arm of flesh or in their medicines for healing. I have always said, Come unto me and I will heal you. Their hearts are set so much on their wealth and power and the praise of the world that they ignore justice and practice unrighteous dominion over the people of the church." What is to be done, if this is true? "I, the Lord, will deal with those Wicked men in my own time and in my own way, but I will say to you that if those in church leadership do not repent, they will be destroyed and great shall be their destruction."

I have had a somewhat similar -- though also very different -- conversation with the Lord, and he helped me arrive at pretty much the same conclusion regarding the so-called apostles and prophets starting with Brigham Young. I followed it up, however, with this question: "How long then, O Lord? How long must the humble and repentant witness such wickedness committed by those who call on your name in vain, and suffer under their unrighteous dominions and judgments?" What I felt in response was essentially this: "Until enough of my people choose to repent and follow me directly on their own. Those who don't will share in the destruction of the men who are leading them astray; therefore, how great the importance to make these things known and call the members of my church to repentance! The changes in the church that you are looking for, hoping for, and praying for will not come from the top-down, through policy changes or even by repentant leadership; they will come from individuals around the world who humbly choose to repent, follow me, and bear their burdens with faith and love. Then, when it is enough, I will accept their sacrifice, call upon a new servant to feed my sheep, and remove those wicked men out of their place. Then will my Kingdom roll forth, and spread abroad to bless all those who abide with me in faith." I don't ask anyone to believe me regarding this, but that's what I felt in my heart, and what I still feel now. And those words are enough for me. 😌

We are commanded to study history, but VERY few study history. 'To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain forever a child,' which is why most Americans have a childlike ignorance of reality. They live in a fantasyland without any understanding of the history of movies and television and rock and roll, et cetera. Pop culture is satanic. That's why David McKay was friends with Cecil DeMille and friends of Satan. Tune it out. Cultivate silence and the Spirit and repent, dear brothers and sisters

@@jasonsellers56 I do not know how I missed your comment seven months ago. If I had seen it I would have written back then. I believe your revelation. It sounds like the Lord to me. I wanted to say something about what the Lord told you about calling upon a new servant to feed his sheep. Let me tell you a little about my history with the Lord. When I was 5, my father moved our family from Utah to San Diego California. The first time I remember going to Sunday school, the teacher asked me if I knew who Jesus was. I did not recognize the name and said, no. She went on to say he was the son of God and creator of the world. I remembered being with them before I was born and said, Oh yeah, I know who you are taking about. When I was 12, my older sister asked me if I knew what as wrong with the church. At that time in my life I did not think there was anything wrong with the church and said, no. She told me that the thing wrong with the Mormon church is that too many Mormons were not Christians. I decided to be a Christian Mormon. A few days later, after going to bed and trying to fall asleep, I heard the still small voice telling me to pray. I had heard the still small voice several times in my childhood but this was the first time it was telling me to do something. I was afraid. For what seemed like a long time, I struggled with my feelings, on the one hand being told to pray and on the other hand being being afraid to pray. Then the still small voice told me to analyze my fear. Thinking about it, I realized I had nothing to fear and got out of bed and said a simple prayer. Father in heaven bless me with what I need. Thanks for what I got in the name of Jesus Christ Amen and I jumped back into bed. As I settled back into bed, the most wonderful feeling come over me that I knew I had done something right. I decided that I would not go to bed without saying a prayer. That was in 1961. To this day, I have not missed a day . After that, the Lord took me under his wing and began to teach me things. He taught me how to pray and what to pray for and he started giving me answers. I have had a very close relationship with the Lord all my life. In spite of my relationship with the Lord, I had some sins that I had not repented of and in 1973, the Lord called me to repentance. I had an Alma the younger type experience and when I repented, in the moment that I asked forgiveness of my sins, the Lord did forgive me and I felt the peace, freedom, and joy that only the Lord can give, but the greatest of all was feeling the Love of God which is indescribable. It is a greater love than anything I had ever felt in my life. For the next ten years, the Lord tested me in the trials of sanctification and in 1983, the Lord came to me while I was in the celestial room of the Logan temple and sanctified me and gave me the Promise of the Celestial kingdom. In 2004, the Lord called me to full time ministry apart from the church. It was without purse or scrip. He had me start the ministry by fasting for 40 days from the 19th of December 2004 until the 29th of January 2005. On the night between the 37th and 38th day, I was laying in bed trying to go to sleep. My body was aching in all my joints from lack of food and I was very uncomfortable. I heard spirit voices and recognized they were the voices of Jesus and Joseph Smith. I was suddenly transfigured and all the pains in my body were gone. They laid hands on me and gave me a blessing and keys and they left. A few minutes later, the pains returned, but spiritually I was a different person. I have been on a continuous mission ever since, teaching the commandments and sayings of Jesus, healing the sick, and casting out demons. I have raised the dead and walked on water. In 2018, I was run over by a 45 ton Mack dump truck. I had been riding a bicycle and when I came to the intersection, I had the green light. There was a dump truck stopping for the red light and thinking he saw me I rode into the intersection. As soon as I was in the intersection, he suddenly turned his wheels to the right and sped up. My instinct told me to get rid of the bike, so I lifted it up in front of me to throw it to the right and jump to the left. As soon as the bike was in front of me is when the truck hit the bike and carried it off into the cross street. The back wheel of the bike was still between my legs and the rear axil captured my left leg just above my knee in the back and the forced twisted my leg and broke my femur up near my hip and also twisted my pant leg and caused friction burns on my thigh. The skin was sloughed on my calve and there was a 5 inch tear on the top of my left foot. I fell to the ground. The front wheel rolled over me, foot to head, then a set of two more wheels rolled over me cross wise and then another set also rolled over me. The miracle was that I felt the weight of the truck rolling over me but the wheels did not touch my body and I was not plastered all over the road. In addition to that, I was taken to the hospital and I had surgery to put a rod in my femur to set it, and for all those injuries to my leg and the surgery, there was no pain. I am telling you this because I have come to a point in my ministry that I would like to have a fellow witness, like Amulek was to Alma. I have been praying it. When I read the revelation you received about another servant, I would like to think he was talking about me. I know I have a mission to fulfill when the Lord cleans out the infestation of evil in church leadership, Pray about it and get back to me. Jesus is the way the truth and the life. He is the resurrection and the life. He is my savior and best friend. Not only did he save me from my sins but he has several times saved my life from certain death. Jesus lives.

How could it be that God started a new dispensation with a prophet who receives so many different visions and revelations, but stays silent with how to have succession to maintain the keys in this dispensation? He really left it to a Nicean Creed format where all the remaining apostles argued it out and use the strong arm of personality and politics , over a three year period , which ultimately ended up in a vote to determine who the successor would be? That doesn’t sound like a modern day revelatory church to me. ever since the church started pushing medical rape during Covid and justified obligating even our little children to get injected, and then, sticking by it, I started to realize how little inspiration comes from things that come out of their mouths that are taught as truth. Government says they can’t have polygamy.. bam.. a revelation comes along to undo it. Blacks start getting rights and society shames our church… boom.. they cave and no apologize for past prophets. How can I ever trust anything they ever say?

@@Veevslav1 The answers are all there for anyone to piece together. One of the pieces is that the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles are equal in power and authority. They each hold all of the keys of the kingdom. Once the First Presidency is dissolved the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is *automatically* the ruling body in the Church. The purported transfiguration, real or not, did not establish that to be the case. The Doctrine & Covenants had already established that to be the case.

If what you're saying is true then it would cause a huge percieved familial rift for me. I'm going to read your cited sources. But I have a feeling Brigham was a true prophet. History is murky. @@markturner5207 MY question that I wrestle with... Was the Church under Brigham more like the peoples of Alma or the Kingdom of King Noah? I have a testimony of Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon. I wrestle with the fact the church refuses to follow the teachings of the Book of Mormon. God wants 14 foot ceilings in the temples while those things he deems his jewels(AKA his children) are neglected and ignored. He wants those that are called to shepherd us to enjoy all the resources the Church has. Lawyers, living stipends, special presentations and access to events... While the sheep are not protected or sheltered. Who was it that voted not to live the law of consecration in the valley? It was not the general masses of the people... It was Brigham Young and Quorum of the 12 because they wanted to get rich. Who was it that voted to exempt themselves from tithing? FYI, I read the scriptures. I pray on the matter and I am so disgusted with how far from what the Church should be if we had followed the examples of the Book of Mormon and the Church under the original 12 where they had all things in common that I am disgusted. I am disgusted with the embrace of abominations by the church leadership. The softening of position. If God tells me I am to look on it with loathing, I am to look on it with loathing. I am trying to be like Jesus. He has a big list of things he calls abominations. Maybe if you spent more time studying the scriptures and less time studying come follow me you would know what those things are.

Brigham never actually even claimed to be a prophet. Does the purported transfiguration make him a prophet? Could he still have been a prophet if this story wasn’t true? The evidence for it is unreliable, while much of the evidence against it is irrefutable. Could recognizing that the story was trumped up to fan the flames of faith really cause you to lose yours?

@davesharp13 Think back to before you understood basic math. What if you felt like the Lord told you that 2+2=5, and then you were taught later, and saw with your own eyes, that it actually equals 4. Would you react similarly? The math teacher, and even the evidence before you, would seemingly be asking you to deny the witness the Spirit that 2+2=5, so would you likewise reject greater light and knowledge by clinging to your former understanding? That way of thinking never ended well for anyone, from the ancient Pharisees to modern "Bible-only" Christians. Instead, why not ask the Lord why he told you one thing, when the truth is clearly something different? Perhaps the truth is still what you thought it was, and more information on eye-witness testimonies of Brigham's transfiguration has yet to surface. Perhaps the Lord only told you what you were prepared for at the time, and will give you greater light and truth now, if you ask him. Perhaps it was never the Spirit who confirmed it to you, and it had always been your own emotions or even a deceitful spirit. I can't say for you which one it was, but those are examples of answers the Lord might tell you, now that you have received this unwelcome information. So ask him to help you make sense of all this, and if you ask in faith, he will answer you.

@@davesharp13 I have had so many people from so many religions claim God confirmed their beliefs were true. I've had so many mormons claim the HG told them to do something even though it contradicted the scriptures. I was lucky to grow up in a time when the church used to teach, all the time, that there are 3 sources we can get answers from HG, Satan and ourselves. It is usually pretty easy to distinguish between Satan and the HG the tricky one to discern is our own voice vs the HG. Scriptures teach that by their fruits ye shall know them. Brigham wasn't called to be a prophet, the members at the time voted for the 12 to lead the church after Joseph's death, Brigham was the head of the quorum. Later after reaching Utah Brigham was sustained president of the church. Brigham taught many false doctrines that the church has since disavowed. And two of the things which Brigham implemented have been a huge stumbling block to the church ever since. BOM teaches that there is only one sure foundation upon which we should build. If our foundation is on prophets/men we are on shaky ground.
