It would be really cool to see a plastic triangular handguard version of the BRN180 with a front sight base for those guys trying to get as close to the old look as possible. I love the Mlok stuff, but I think it's feasible to get even close to the retro look. Maybe a polymer overmold on an aluminum frame, with an integrated front sight that looks closer to the original sight, but it's still free floating and not contacting the barrel or gas system?

This 1000-f*ing-percent, I'm interested in doing a BRN180 build, but I guess I'm going to have to do something like the FAL-10 build with a custom "trianglur" freefloat solid barrel shroud. It was an AR-10 a guy built with a stock made out of pipe to mimic the FAL side folder sketon stock and a triangular handguard to mimic the metal FAL handguard.

Rep "This barrel will not have a POI shift due to heat" Asshat "POI will shift.... but only a little bit" Rep was done with the interview at that point.
@asymsolutions
@asymsolutions 4 года назад
ALL barrels will have a POI shift if hot enough. Said "asshat" was giving the rep a chance to correct his statement so he doesn't cause brownells to get called out when {insert name here} does a 100rd dump and then "while the barrel is still hot" accuracy check on a vise, then finds a .1 MOA shift. He was trying to get the rep to walk his statement into being "yeah a POI shift, but less than the margin of error of almost all shooters" which is realistic and acceptable.

People keep complaining that the forward assist "isn't part of Eugene Stoner's origanal design". Well neither is M-Lok but, I don't see that bothering anyone.
@ragedashboard6374
@ragedashboard6374 4 года назад
mlok actually serves a purpose and adds minimal weight to the system. The forward assist does almost nothing outside of certain rare/niche uses, and adds weight and complexity. It's also a failure point that can lock up the gun, and if you accidentally fire the weapon when it is depressed (such as resting against a wall) you can kaboom your rifle. Stoner was right, it's an unnecessary addition.
@chopinbloc
@chopinbloc 4 года назад
I like to use the forward assist when I administratively load a rifle. My HD rifle gets loaded and unloaded a lot. Letting the bolt slam home bounces the firing pin off the primer each time, which can knock a small bit of priming compound off the cup. Over time, it can deactivate the primer. So I hand load a round into the chamber, ease the bolt forward, then press the FA. Same goes for loading a rifle quietly.

@Dylan Draper A1 I believe is something like 12.75 or so. But, that s fixed stock? WWSD, he would be ok with adjustable. So the easiest way to accomplish a super tough stock like they designed and make it ajustable is spacers, The tube itself, I believe, is carbine length. From trigger to butt for my G is 13, my A1 is a little over 12.5 all my adjustable stocks are 11.5 to 12 depending. Yes, the 1/2 to 1 inch does make a difference to me. For the price why not go carbon fiber? I see a buffer tube for 200 and a pistol grip for 90. Both carbon fiber and will drop the weight of a full metal one. Plastic and polymers have been knocking around since the 50s and still kind of suck.
@dposcuro
@dposcuro 4 года назад
@@robertbogan225 Probably due to the simple fact that making it out of carbon fibre, right, would cost a hell of a lot more, because you can't just make some moulds and inject carbon fibre into it. To get strong carbon fibre, you need to lay it up like sheets of fibreglass. Due to the complex shape of the receiver, and the nature of laying carbon fibre sheets? It cannot be done by a machine. It would need to be built like a carbon bicycle frame. Individual sheets of carbon fibre, laid on an buck, have the resin laid on, another sheet of carbon, etc. And human labour costs a hell of a lot of money. Before you say it, yes, Tegra arms made a "carbon reinforced lower receiver", which was basically a nylon, with carbon fibre fill, instead of glass fibre. Which really changed nothing. At that point, it was basically just using the Carbon as a buzzword to generate interest. Carbon as a fill material isn't going to generate any appreciable strength difference than glassfibre. For the price? A carbon lower, made right? Would probably cost in excess of $400 alone. Note: This is all based off of a 2 minute google search. If someone is making a proper carbon lower receiver, or if someone has started making a machine that can lay carbon properly for a complex shape like a bike? Fill me in.
@robertbogan225
@robertbogan225 4 года назад
@@dposcuro it needs a customs molds. And people with experiance working on it. Ive seen the complex shapes carbon fiber is being used to make. They aren't however, trying to mass produce carbon car parts for sale. You COULD make a Carbon Fibre lower, using sheet carbon, and laying it up like they do with a carbonfibre bicycle, which would be very light, and VERY durable. But that is literally only possible right now by having people cutting carbon fibre fabric, and laying it onto forms and moulds, one piece at a time, and then pressing it/impregnating it with resin. This is very different than an injection moulded composite material like carbon-reinforced nylon. Just because something is made out of carbon fibre, doesn't make it strong. It matters HOW the carbon fibre is used. The shredded fibres used in carbon-nylon, do not interlace in any organized fashion. They have gaps and voids where it is just nylon. They are stronger than just nylon, but probably no stronger than glass fibre or kevlar reinforced nylon.

They say they will have just the lowers on sale too, for around 100. For what you get with it the price is quite reasonable. Yeah if you bought the parts on sale and custom built it would be cheaper, but you have to spend time and do not get a warranty.

Do you have any inside knowledge as to why Ian and Carol opted not to use a 6.8 SPC 12.5 inch barrel? You'd get better ballistics than a 16 inch 5.56, and it'd be lighter.
@workingguy6666
@workingguy6666 4 года назад
It has been about keeping it legal for everyone thus far. Karl and Ian don't seem to gravitate toward boutique rounds at all, and - living out in the middle of the desert - see little need for shorter platforms. Even what the WWSD is, but as a 11.5" pistol-build, would be lighter and handier, but that doesn't fit distance-shooting in the desert, nor maintain the FPS (for 5.56) that Karl expects for long-distance AR-15 shooting (which he used to compete in). I think that, for the most part, it's just biases that the two have toward moving away from the norm, and the fact that they are just entering the market with a new product. Remember, Glock was only 9mm at the start, but the added calibers as they grew. Are you sure a 12.5 6.8 SPC would be lighter than a Faxon ultra-light pencil barrel though? That doesn't sound right.
@colsoncustoms8994
@colsoncustoms8994 4 года назад
Main reason is it's less common and requires more proprietary stuff (bcg, mags). Pretty sure they discuss cartridges in one of the WWSD videos. You certainly could build one in 6.8 spc though. I'm putting one together that is loosely based on the wwsd concept but in 7.62x40WT. My main takeaway from the series was, lightweight barrel, being mindful of the weight of the essential components, not adding a bunch of unnecessary crap. A family member built a wwsd type rifle using the M4E1 upper / lower (couldn't locate a mk2), faxon pencil, faxon light bcg, adjustable gas block, fixed magpul stock, aero's 12" mlok free float handguard (the Enhanced line is great, probably adds a little more weight but is rock solid and a true free float), and some brand of nicer trigger (zero idea which one though), with a holosun red dot on top. I don't remember the exact weight but it was very handy and a pleasure to shoot. Weighed less than a 10.5" blackout pistol we were playing around with.
@Megames2012
@Megames2012 4 года назад
@@workingguy6666 A 12.5 inch pistol is legal every where a standard 16 inch AR is legal. And with 5.56, a 16 inch barrel is better suited ballistically, but with 6.8 SPC, 12 inch is ballistically superior to 5.56 NATO, including long distance shooting. Finally, yes, a 12.5 inch lightweight 6.8 barrel would weigh a few ounces lighter, and 2A Armament has a lightweight receiver set that's lighter than their polymer lower and aluminum upper.

@@Megames2012 "polymer lower and aluminum upper" are you factoring in the stock, pistol grip, buffer tube, castle nut, end plate, take down pins? The Palouse-Lite Forged Lower Receiver weighs 7.2 oz. If you added a MOE stock (8 oz) and grip (2.8 oz), buffer tube (3.5 oz), 1.1 oz for the castle nut and end plate, and whatever the take down pins weigh (say .5 oz), you're looking at 23 oz. The older mk2 weighed 21.2 oz. Not sure if the weight will be the same on the mk3, but you get the idea. As for the upper, you could for sure run the 2A upper or something similar if you wanted. Money vs weight savings is actually a pretty big factor to consider too, the Palouse-Lite Forged Receiver Set is 13.1 oz for $235. Their BALIOS LITE GEN 2 RECEIVER SET is 12.3 oz for $559. You're essentially paying $325 to save .8 oz... Same with the mk3, at $150, you're saving the price of the stock, grip, buffer tube, castle nut, end plate and take down pins (mainly the stock and grip, although the other stuff adds up). Palouse-Lite Forged Lower Receiver is $125, plus everything mentioned above, you're looking at around $200. If money's not an issue, you can build a 3 lb 16" ar15. I'd rather have one at 5.5 lbs that is sturdy though personally, or opt for some more features and add a little more weight (the M4E1 upper and hand guard is pretty awesome and rock solid). What barrel are you running on that 6.8 if you don't mind me asking?

Regarding the WWSD , I believe Chris Bartocci that Eugene Stoner hated the 556 platform and gravitated towards 762. He also stated that the SR15 was not his creation.

Still a good thought experiment though, ended up becoming a nice rifle. I think a light weight 16" 6.5 creedmoor or 308 could be pretty nice too, came concept as the wwsd but in big boy cartridges. Even 243 would be alright. I've been playing around with 130 grain bullets loaded up in 308 and I think with a faster powder, you could get a nice lightly recoiling load dialed in that doesn't kick too bad but would still spank any ar15 cartridges (might have to move up to a higher bc bullet against some of the 6.5 grendel stuff at longer ranges).
