Browning 1886 Carbine - Bear Defense Gun

A big bore lever action is the best rifle to deliver rapid-fire of heavy loads in a self-defense situation. Many folks carry bear defense handguns now in the mountain west, just like Alaskans have done for years. A precise shot with the right handgun can save your life, but a big bore lever action rifle delivers much more power and precision. When your tasks allow carrying a .45-70 carbine, it should be your first choice.

My father never allowed time to play with plastic toy guns, nerf style guns, cap guns nothing, when I was young. He did this because our family has always been hunters, and his biggest speeches to me growing up was the respect to be shown to every gun knowing if its unloaded, or even not a real gun.

Great video about a great gun that has been sensibly modified for hunting. I have a Lyman receiver sight on mine and will see if XS sights still makes the carbine front sight blade. I used to shoot heavy loads from mine carbine and the buttstock style was nasty. I load much lighter now and its still effective and much nicer the shoot.

I bot a Marlin SS Guide gun a while back for my 'woods' deer and bear rifle, 18", non ported so I can use cast boolitz. 300 FedRemChester HP's for deer and LC cast 430 GC at 1700 for 'more'. We only have black bears around here, but some pretty big ones. Also Pa boar hunts on a preserve. Kills at both ends... I may drop back to 400 LC's at 1600... My field and plinking load is a LC 300 at 1500. Very accurate, and pleasant to shoot. I also use the XS sights, with the large aperture rear. I also watched your vid on handguns for bear. Think I will stick with my .45 auto. I Like your chest rig holster, gotta git me one! Jerry

If you want to do damage fast those Lehigh extreme penetrators are the way to go!!! You get more penetration than a FMJ/hard cast and more devastation on tissue than any expanding bullet… Oh s d you should get an exit wound that will be devastating and aid the whole bit. Also they work anywhere from 750 to 5,000 FPS!!! There just no way to go wrong with those Lehigh bullets (assuming you choose the right one for the task).

Thanks for subscribing. Wasn't familiar with the book, so googled it. The reviews of a couple of historians differed seriously with the author's contentions. His last run for the presidency certainly lowered my opinion a bit. TR certainly wasn't perfect, but his leadership style and history of "getting dirty" in his adventures make him completely different from most other presidents. And I was trained to always salute anyone with a Medal of Honor. Any gun/hunting topics of interest?

The Lehigh defense are EXCELLENT rounds. I would agree that it should be your bear cartridge. For a handgun, I've heard everything from 44 mag to 500 S&W. Randy Selby recommends a Ruger 480 for bear backup. The biggest surprise for me was when I found out that a whole lot of Alaskans carried a 10mm mag for bear defense. Apparently the full power loads (1250 fps) with 200 to 220 fmj's or hard cast bullets have an impressive amount of penetration - which, as you said is a very important factor for bear defense. Something to think about. Oh, and before I forget, I haven't read the applicable law personally, but quite a few people have said that the 45-70 is "too long" to fit the new straight walled case laws for deer hunting.

The most *POTENT* 45-70 rounds available, in my opinion, are Garrett ammunition. Just make sure that your rifle can accommodate these very high pressures.
@lockloadwithdickfairburn-cr1jb
The top 10mm loads are equivalent to a 4 ich .41 Magnum revolver - 220@1250 fps. I think the .45-70 is too long for some of the straight wall states, but it is specifically allowed on the DNR list in Illinois.
@lockloadwithdickfairburn-cr1jb

Got a similar version of the 1886. Mine is a 1886 Winchester (Miroku) version also in 45/70 Govt. I also added the Williams peep sight. Mine is the “deluxe “ version with a 24 inch octagon barrel and fancy wood. It goes with me up north (Saskatchewan) when I head to my cabin for hunting and bear defence as well. Yep … it’s heavy but that at least helps with recoil. With my hand loads and the Remington Cor-lok 405 gr ammo it does pretty well and is pretty bang on out to 300 yards. After that …. Not so much. Lots of hold over needed. Thanks for the video.

If you read Roosevelt's story of his African adventures you will be disgusted by the slaughter of animals. Roosevelt was a terrible shot by his own admission which is why he said, "I don't shoot well but I shoot often". He took lever actions because at the time there were few bolt actions. Many are in love with their 45-70 firearms but we all must remember the cartridge almost disappeared because superior cartridges were developed and still remain to be superior.
@lockloadwithdickfairburn-cr1jb
TR had a Springfield bolt-action (.30-06) along on the safari. With modern powders and strong actions, the .45-70 is an entirely different animal than its original form. Yes, they killed LOTS of game, which was accepted at that time. Most of TR's kills ended up in museums which had no examples of that particular species.

He left me the .44 caliber twin to the .357 Browning Carbine in my home defense video. He also left me all the tools from his leather shop. I've made some custom knives (mostly Sgian Dubhs for myself and Scottish buddies) and will use the leather shop to turn out nice scabbards for several Damascus hunting blades I have.

The XS front blade was a limited run for the Browning 1886 carbine. The sight base on a carbine is a square base with a thin slot (running parallel to the bore) for a simple, pinned blade. It was the same height as the factory blade.

With standard pressure loads I don't see much difference between 45/70 & my 54 cal flintlock carbine(24" barrel) with the Lyman plains bullets. A hole about bore size & meat damage an inch or two around the hole but very little more. I leave the hotter stuff for hogs where making sure it & its buddies don't come come see me is more important than saving meat. Besides, the hotter stuff tends to be a bit more exciting in my guide gun.

Baiting is not hunting, don't care what your opinion is. I was born and raised in Alaska and hunted many animals and never once baited, Who does that? Some lazy rich people that want to fake are hunters. Baiting is for the weak IMHO. The entire reason why hunters like my dad, who has books written about him for his hunting, are so looked up to by real men, is the fact every record animal he harvested he hunted, no baiting no tricking no fences. You go out and find your target and have to track it and get into range without giving yourself away these are real hunters. I can not stand that people bait in animals while sitting in a tree and then claim they are hunters. A person that has never hunted a day in their life can do that and get the animal every time. For me, it is just as bad as shining for deer and calling yourself a hunter. Out of all the moose, caribou, Deer, elk, Bear, goat, sheep, gator, and boar that I have hunted, I have never once been in a tree or baited an animal. When I hunt I have to know clue if it will end with me getting an animal. Don't get me wrong if you live off the land and want to shoot moose or dear out your back window that is fine. You not hunting you harvesting for food. Almost every hunting video on RU-vid today not all most 90% are farm hunts they just don't tell you, What is a farm hunt, the animals are bred by humans in a large fenced-in area and bait machines are put out by the stands, then people come and film there hunt like they are out in the wilderness hunting a wild animal. Your favorite YT hunter does this I bet everything on it. Some don't have fences but they feed so much that all the animals stay on the hunted property same thing, Then so-called rich hunters go out, and pay to "hunt" with means sitting in stand-by feeders and shooting the animals that just walk up to them, but this is not mentioned in the video now do you see the feeder.

Hate to tell you but from what I have seen, grissly bear 🐻 take that 45-70 will kill him but he won't die until after he kills you. Especially y'all in a ground blind and that close when he passes. I don't believe you could stop him from 50 yards out. You realize he can be 50 yards out and reach you within 5 seconds or less. You won't stop him in time. If he sneaks up behind y'all y'all could have your pistol, your rifle and your buddy's pistol and rifle and y'all won't make it. You can blow a Grizzly bears heart ❤ out of his body and he's gonna stay alive long enough to kill you both. I'm not trying to scare y'all and y'all can laugh at me if you want to but I've seen so many people attacked and so many people killed even though they were well armed and the bear 🐻 was found dead but so were the hunters. I hear you saying you could drop a cape Buffalo 🐃 I've seen cape Buffalo 🐃 take 12 to 14 shots to kill and were hit very well. If they charge you you better pray to God that he falls dead while you working that lever. All I can say Sir, please be safe and I'll keep y'all in my thoughts and prayers 🙏.
