Bruce Dern on Hitchcock, Tarantino, & ‘Chappaquiddick’

He should have won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2014 for “ Nebraska “ by a landslide . And when he was cast as a bad guy he was incredible. He stole the show in “The Cowboys “ . Yes they should honor him with a special Academy Award!

@zorrpop Most definitely! I thought he was going to get it for Nebraska. I can't remember who won it, but Dern was terrific in that film. Also, he was as good as Jon Voight and Jane Fonda in Coming Home, yet he went home empty-handed. The fact that Dern, Annette Benning, and Michelle Pfeiffer don't have Oscar's is mind-boggling. Great interview.

And his daughter is a great talent as well. If I see her in a cast..I watch it.

I love Bruce, he is an iconic actor & was super in the role. But I was so looking forward to seeing Burt Reynolds play the part. He would've been fantastic & equally iconic! The movie also had so much personal significance for Burt. He had filmed westerns at that very ranch, back in the day. The lead roles of Pitt & DeCaprio were loosley based on Burt & his relationship w/his stuntman, Hal Needham. And Tarrantino is actually named after Burt's character in Gunsmoke. Per Tarrantino, his mom had a huge crush on Burt at the time of his birth. Burt had done all the table readings for the film & was actually rehearsing his lines for the role when he had his heart attack. He was due up to film the following month...It's So Sad...But Bruce was a good friend of Burts. They had also worked together in the past. I'm sure he's very pleased Quentin chose Bruce as his replacement. RIP BR

@@jubalcalif9100 Burt & Bruce go way back. Burt also worked with Bruce's 1st wife, Dianne Ladd, in White Lightening in 1973.

well he did get nominated for Nebraska and sadly lost but i hope he one day wins one and does a film with his daughter and Ex wife too i mean all 3 of them

Good one with Jack Nicholson. Dern was also fantastic in another 'undervalued' gem from the 70s, called Smile. It's an amazing edgy satire on America's fixation on beauty pageants. Barbara Feldon from Get Smart delivered an impressive performance, along with Dern.

I loved Silent Running. I think it's the first film that made me cry. And that's when I thought it was fiction.

Oh man, I forgot about that one. Great film. What a cast. High-level performances from Dern, Jane Fonda, Bonnie Bedilla, Susanah York, Gig Young, and Red Buttons. Michael Sarrazin was adequate, but hasn't he always been.

Back in the early 90's (a la VHS) I used to rewind the part where he fell off the roof *over and over again* . That movie is a classic and Feldman really was a meatball.

Yes! Ashby was a very good director in his days. He definitely had his run ins with the studios and, well, everybody else. Hal was featured quite heavily in Biskind's book "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls".

@@erichaynes7502 Ashby was a brilliant editor & a brilliant director. Have you seen The Landlord lately? The studios ruined his cuts of Lookin' To Get Out & Second-Hand Hearts, which are now restored to Ashby's original versions on DVD & are terrific & hilarious. Biskind's book is rather a salacious negative gossip tome on great directors, all of whom Biskind apparently wants to cut down to size with pejorative personality stories. Discussing Robert Altman, Biskind doesn't even mention Robert Altman's magnificent The Long Goodbye, for example. Nick Dawson's biography of Hal Ashby is the best source of information on him.

Hal Ashby directed The Last Detail and many others. His work is superb.

I think Ted was drunk a lot, he really liked the parties and young women. Kopechne had had 4 or 5 drinks the hour before she died so it looks like they both were smashed. All the Kennedy's would have been better off if they would have been more discrete.
