Glad you touched on this in detail, he was a big influence in eastern philosophy and metaphysics being introduced to the world through his martial arts approach. In many competitive arenas getting into flow state is a necessary skill, and in the case of hand to hand combat on the battle field, racing or fighter jet dog fights, it can literally be the difference between life and death. The methodology of an empty mind feeling the moment and being in the moment and interacting live with it is a peak state of expressing mastery, which he was conveying.

his mind and philosophy is generic eastern delivered in his own unique style... his physical prowess, however, is something that has started alot physical things..like his playing with electric shock..there is an exercise too called dragon flag that's coined after him..not to mention that he formed a martial arts in its own rights....so, i don't think his physical prowess is his bonus .. which martial arts do you practice??

Me and 2 of my friends used to do a bit of training in the garden and one of my mates was obsessed with Bruce Lee and Tony Jaa (not sure on the spelling lol)... We used to laugh at him and think he was daft for trying spinning elbows and kicks, saying "it only works in the movies"... Now you see people getting flatlined by the same "spinning shit" every other week, little did we now 😂

This man was ahead of his time, he showed the traditional martial artists that they should not remain alone in the tradition, if not they should put it to the test and adapt. This is the beauty of combat martial arts, boxing, mma, muay thai, jiu jitsu, wrestling, etc, martial arts will only change because people change.

Finally, the GOAT has arrived. I began with martial arts training with a guy who always preached the same principles after whipping our butts every session, since we would constantly be in street fights or brawls...once we learned the discipline, we didn't thirst for blood like before, we seeked tests of skill and experienced fighters, bouncers didn't do it after a couple months anyway ...

Something worth mentioning is that though Bruce Lee did not have a professional ring record, he spent time with and around plenty of people who did, and they were able to recognize that he was the real deal. Judge me not by the color of my actions, but by my content of character, and the company I keep :)

He certainly did associate with the top US point karate fighters of his era. I think he would have had been more validated if he had interacted more with the top boxers from the same time frame. Outside of Joe Lewis I don't recall him really training with that many 'contact' oriented fighters.

Machiavelli's art of war was that a soldier must know: when turn anywhere, to retreat, to stand guard, to advance. Bruce lee's respinse was: when to flow, to creep, to drip, to crash. Rumelt's responce was: when to broaden advantages, to increase demand for advantage, to isolate advantage, to deppening advantage. My response is: when to run, to ambush, to block, to hunt. It is the same principle throughout humankind history. My humble opinion.

I consider chess the ultimate martial art. I am amazed that computers can play chess without emotions. Pure thought without emotions. We have created a fighter without emotions. Let me tell you a story. Newsies is a movie and a musical about the News Boys Strike. Very emotional stuff, very inspiring. One year after the News Boys Strike, they invented the newspaper vending machine. You drop in a quarter, the metal box opens up. That metal newspaper vending machines put a whole bunch of News Boys out of business. A metal box put an end to all that Newsies bullshit. Man I wish Bruce never died. Why are so many people compelled to give him titles? He was a great callisthenics athlete and a pioneer. That's it! He wasn't a fighter as he never fought and as a martial artist he was just a beginner as he only finished Wing Chub school and then never had a chance to attend many other schools anymore. He was too busy with an actor career and then never had a chance to develop further due to his sudden death. I personally would not dare call him a martial artist or a martial arts philosopher second to NONE! Most of his ideas come from old texts written hundreds of years ago. He might have been a prodigy who came up with everything on his own without studying old knowledge from books or by ear from a teacher but there is no way to confirm now.

I can see from reading the comments that Bruce Lee's fighting technique, philosophy of life and martial arts mean so much and have resonated with so many. Allow me to share my thoughts and philosophy for a moment? While Bruce had no ring fights or any form of competitive professional fights. He was a master of Wing Chun and of course his own iteration of it, namely, Jeet Kune Do. For those uninitiated with the martial art, was directly translated to way of the intercepting fist. Jeet Kune Do allowed Bruce to develop and use incredibly painful and deadly techniques which, in no way shape or form could be used effectively in a competitive scenario. Bruce's ideology of combat was life or death, it was not designed for an arena where rules are involved. Jeet Kune Do is purely a form of martial arts used in life or death scenarios and therefore could never be tested in a competitive environment.

I think its more than just taking what's useful from each style. What's useful for some might not be for others. He wanted people to train in a way that would transcend style and make the concept of style irrelevant. 'Style' is nothing but a social construct like race and borders.

He did have a documented boxing match & quite a bit of street fights under his belt in hong kong as a youth on the junction street tigers street gang as a youth tho. That was his base and reason 4 picking up wing chun. Did a ton of sparring & had some scuffles in adult years too.

Bruce Lee is a fighter... just not a modern professional fighter. He fought streets fights and trained in martial arts. 2) Random: Taking a 1960s basketball player and putting him against someone from 2020s, it's a completely different game. Better science, training, diet, etc should benefit the modern player bc his game is built on the history of others. Bruce isn't a professional fighter b/c he was promoting martial arts and making movies. He was dealing with racism as an Asian man in 1960s Hollywood while also battling Chinese culture in the states. The fact that we still discuss him 50 years after his death shows how great he truly is.

No doubt Bruce Lee was a legend, but considering his lack of ring experience it's safe to say that he may not have been as great as cinema portrayed him to be. After all, film and acting is about dramatization. It's interesting to hear people call Bruce "a master of martial arts" when he never truly mastered a discipline, not even Wing Chun (which he only studied for a few years during his youth). A "combat philosopher" yes, but a "master" I'm not so sure. A true master of martial arts who also made his way to the big screen would be Jet Li...and yes, he would send Bruce to school. No disrespect to the great BL, just stating facts. Check out Li's impressive martial arts repertoire.

Fighting as a sport in a ring. Thats not a real fight. Real is no gloves no protection, no weight limit. Like 1995 vale tudo ie not Sean o mally doubting if hè could even go 25 min. Nowadays people who barely get injured are in fights? Lets call that entertainment-fighting.

I don't understand this fascination for Bruce Lee. Lee was foremost a martial arts practitioner, but most important, he was an actor and made a living as such. He never actually fought in martial arts tournaments. He was an amazing athlete, there is no question about it, but his combat efficiency has yet to be demonstrated.

Lee wouldn't last two minutes, facing any 16 yr, who train at the Tiger Gym in Thailand.

@@LawrenceKenshin I once pointed out to a Bruce Lee hater that he actually did win an amateur boxing match and instead of conceding that he was wrong, he straw manned me as claiming I said he was an unbeatable superhuman fighter when I never implied anything of the sort. Then it just turned into a personal flame war because he was butthurt. Last I heard from this fool, he sent me a video of some Kata claiming it was the only martial arts I cared about or some nonsense like that.. Ironically, although I haven't trained in a while as much as I'd like to, the primary discipline I've trained is shoot wrestling... There is obviously no Kata in shoot wrestling. Don't get me wrong, there's definitely an issue with some of the Bruce Lee cultists who blindly spread anything they hear and I tend to be anti-BS in general due to the harm it can cause but the Bruce Lee haters in my experience are even more irrational and dishonest at this point from what I've seen.

He would get destroyed by anyone in UFC, anyone in Bellator, most people in sub-tier leagues. Lee had no ground game, few movies he used grappling, he would not pass more as blue belt... This isnt western 70s anymore when no full-contact stand-up was practiced, fighting styles have advanced significantly. Better fighting styles from other parts of world have come into play that Lee and other western MA's had 0 knowledge about - Sambo, BJJ, Vale Tudo, Muay Thai etc.

No, far from it. He Trained to an extremely high level but he competed in pretty basic comps. compare his skills to a top tier K1 or MMA fighter he wouldn’t be much use. Bruce Lee is an icon but that’s pretty much it. If his fighting was actually that good people in MMA would be training it. All these people who spend their hole lives training in a martial art but not actually getting punched in the face for a living will never be good fighters.

I don't get you guys. I don't. BL never fought. He was an actor. He wrote books and by his own accounts hated tradition. He thought biting was an answer to grapplers. You all make him into a martial arts god when he never proved anything. Move on. The pioneers were Kano, the Gracies, etcv etc. Not this fool.

this is perhaps the worst video of this channel and ironically andvery sadly, it's about one of the god level martial artist of all time.. ..lack of ring experience, so you can't tell if he is a good fighter or whatever.. what lazy shiz was that? edit: by the way does anybody know what martial arts lawrence kenshin practices??
