Interesting with regards to Nishioka saying Bruce was too fast for the point scoring champions of his day., Mike Stone described Bruce Lee as being far too quick for competition & Joe Lewis reiterated by saying Lee was the fastest man to have stood in front of him, so what Nishioka said regarding the speed of Bruce Lee being too fast for those point scoring champions reads true in every sense of the word.

Very educational, excellent video. Thanks for giving truthful insight into Bruce Lee's grappling experience. Maybe you can do a video on the relationship between Bruce Lee and his karate students: Chuck Norris, Mike Stone and Joe Lewis. All 3 of them were point karate champions before they met Bruce. But only Joe Lewis out of the 3 will admit that he was a Bruce Lee student. Joe Lewis also went on into fight full contact Karate (kick boxing). Norris and Stone stayed with point fighting (which we all know is a game of tag). Norris and Stone never admitted they were taking JKD lessons from Bruce Lee.

Love this channel, brings so much truth and things I didn't know about Bruce Lee. Bruce was born with this gift of martial arts on a heightened level plus he applied hard and rigorous work on a daily basis. I've said the same thing about people who was doing what Bruce lee accomplished in his short life, way before him, but Bruce was a strong influencer and popularized what he practiced. It's something how like, a sponge Bruce could spar with others that new more in their expertise of martial arts, learn it quickly and effectively, in so little time and then be proficient by mixing the martial arts together that worked best for him. Pure genius and Ingenius. Another thing I must say, is don't get caught up with martial arts belts, martial arts are a way of life not the way of belts. Knowing what works best for you, hard work, dedication and sparring are key, to being a good martial artist.

Brings to mind how Karate guys trained in the sixties in chicago. The YMCAs often had karate and judo classes on the same floor minutes apart so when the karate class was over, they would go right over to judo to learns sweeps, chokes, and throws. my instructor at the time incorporated punching and kicking as "entry" to sweeping , choking, and throws until there was a flow. The judo guys would do the same thing but karate did answer to judo providing he got his hands on you. Its definitely a cornerstone art other styles could build on. Hollywood certainly knew with their "judo chop" which later became the "Karate chop" and don't forget those techniques Spencer Tracy did in the 1955 movie "Bad Day at Black Rock" . It was definitely around then so it makes sense Lee trained in it.

Thank you for your work. What we know from all the information since Bruce’s death to this day is that Bruce had only one thing on his mind and that was to become the best fighter in the world. So to me the drug letters and whatever else he did has nothing to do with diminishing the idea that he was a great fighter. So that’s saying to all of us to diminish any idea that you cannot achieve success in life because of what you intake, what your personality is, do you smoke or not smoke ect. If you wish to accomplish something no matter what it is just focus concentration and commitment. And you can eat and smoke whatever you want and it won’t matter. I’m not encouraging it but I’m encouraging belief in oneself no matter what.

The question is - would Bruce Lee have been able to defend against Royce Gracie’s takedowns? It seemed to me that the hardcore wrestlers could avoid getting taken down by Royce. The good wrestlers could take down Royce. When Severn and Kimo took down Royce, they tried to fight him on the ground and lost. There is no evidence that Bruce Lee trained in wrestling. When Remco Pardoel tried to throw Royce with his uchi-mata, Royce nullified it and ended up in a controlling position when they went to the ground. And Pardoel was a multiple time national judo champion. Hayward Nishioka said that Bruce would lose to a good groundfighter if the fight went to the ground. Shortly after UFC II when Royce was dominant, many people were saying, “What if Bruce Lee was still alive?” It is a hypothetical question that can never be answered.

In Addition to Bruce Lee learning Judo from his first American student Jesse Glover, Glover's sensei Fred Sato, Judo Gene LeBell and LeBell's top student Pan-Am gold medalist Hayward Nishioka (all mentioned in this video). He also learned Aikido from Black Belt magazine founder, Mito Ueahara who was a shodan in that art and Bill Ryusaki, a stuntman/actor who also held a black belt in that art. Another art that has grappling in it that Bruce Lee studied was Hapkido. He learned this martial art from both Wang Ing Sik, and the style's Grandmaster Ji Han Jae . Lastly Gene LeBell also taught Bruce Catch-Wrestling. And Wally Jay trained him in Jujuitsu

Correct Golden bell Training, Lee was not the first to mix grappling with Kung Fu or anything else, BUT he was the most popular person to do it due to his movie fame where it got seen by millions. He may also have been the first to really organize such a mixture and write it down, marking his principles about the topic. That is saying something and he was a pioneering figure in that respect. However, as Dan Inosanto told us in a class back in 1995 in Princeton New Jersey, " You might in your training mix this together with that and you'll think you are a genius and created something new. Well, you're not. Rest assured it has been done before a thousand times by people around the world long before you put them together. Maybe a hundred years ago, maybe a thousand, but it's not unique to you.". Among many things Inosanto taught over twenty seven years that I've learned from him, that stuck in my mind like a glowing ember. Humanity has done it before, for centuries.

We would have to ask Bruce who influenced him the most in judo or jiu jitsu but I'm sure everyone gave him some interesting things to add to his knowledge or repertoire. It isn't some blank statement like LeBell taught Lee everything he knew about judo or such. it makes for great headlines and notoriety to say such which is why it is done just as Seagal falsely claimed Lee told him he was very impressed with his aikido. We know that never happened but it fed Seagal's ego to say so. Keep up the great work.

A very balanced account of a very controversial topic. Had Bruce lived on, there's no way he _wouldn't_ have developed a legitimate ground game to complement the stand-up grappling he'd learned in judo. In an alternative universe, shortly after the release of Enter The Dragon, Bruce hears about a mysterious fighting family called the Gracies, whose expertise is in groundfighting. Intrigued, he travels to Brazil, spars with Master Helio Gracie in order to test his skills, and promptly wakes up disoriented from a choke he never even knew existed. Immediately, he begins training in BJJ and combines his newfound ground techniques with his stand-up fighting to become the most accomplished martial artist to have ever lived.

I was brought up in a violent environment and between the ages of 12 and 40 I must have been in approximately 30 or more street fights, yes it's a lot. Of all those fights I must have won possibly half maybe 60% but I doubt it. What I can tell you is that every fight that I won I did it without going to the ground. I even once took on 4 guys on a bus and I hit the first guy when he started to move toward me and must've broken his nose, then the other three busted me up pretty badly. I'm a guitarist and a teacher and have been for 36 years. Today I feel ashamed of so much of that but I was foolish. This is just to say that in most fights when you know how to hit and hit hard, the fight is over quickly.

What Gene LeBell taught Bruce Lee was a combination of Catch Wrestling and Judo. Actually the Machado brothers black belts in Brazilian Jui-Jitsu said Gene LeBell already knew BJJ before he trained with them for 12 years.

His arm bar against sammu hung is improperly held. The standing guillotine on chuck norris has no hip control. And even his bulldog choke is ridiculously wrong. So where is this skilled grappler you are referring to because all i see is a bruce lee ignorant of proper grappling holds and position.

Very interesting. I read Jessie Glover's book that he put out in 1976 (or'77). He talked about "stalking" Lee, and getting in front of Bruce walking down the street and striking out at phone poles trying to elicit a response from Bruce as an introduction. Lots of cool stories from the Seattle days. I agree, Jessie Glover should rate a stand alone video.

I met that actor who played the husky Samurai in Fist of Fury/Chinese Connection on a subway train in New York, he said "My name is Fong, I taught Bruce Lee Judo!" When we got off the train and I threw a couple of kicks, he chuckled a little like in the movie haha. Anyway, I knew about Judo Gene Labell from seeing him on Pro Wrestling back in the late 60's. Even today there is a move in Wrestling called the Labell-Lock.

It's a damn shame people today don't understand how skilled Jesse really was. He would mop the floor with a lot of pro fighters, even in his older years he was dangerous, but he and Ed Hart were always very low key and didn't really openly promote or market their training.

Exactly, been telling people for years, soft styles like tai chi are grappling arts. People tend to forget jiu-jitsu means soft art. Tai chi focuses more on throwing and clinch boxing (da shou), a full force ward off to the throat will do some serious damage. Connor used a kao jin or shoulder strike in a few of his fights.

Seems like this Bruce Lee guy’s approach was simply taking whatever worked quickest and most effective for the individual and the individual’s body type. Always looking for the best techniques to train and just rejecting the rest. It’s cutting edge, really. Seems like the same base from which MMA has grown.
