@@christiancung Bruce lee always talked about “The art of dying” . Not dying in the literal sense but just letting go of anything that’s holding you back and keeping you in a certain state of mind. So in this instance “Like everyone else, you want to learn the way to win, but never accept the way to lose” ;of course we all want to win at everything but reality is you just can’t . The answer isn’t to let that fact keep you rigid, but to keep improving and learning in spite of it.
@@marcoaurelio-ql8os it depends, in history you can´t change the way to teach because history is history, maths are there because it´s is seen as the most effective way of calculating, so you could call math in the schools kung fu or karate because it´s already a system, but honestly how many how a desire to learn a jeet kune do version of math for themselves? would be the most boring thing ever
If you don't feel the energy that Bruce exudes even in this video clip then you're missing the tenacity of his glorious spirit. He definitely inspired and changed many lives.
did you know that bruce actually bulked up from 140 to around 165 later on? but then he slimmed down again cause supposedly he felt the weight was slowing him down. i just learn this 😬
@@realamericannegro977 that's not true literally every piece of information about this man describes how fitness and discipline were always a top priority for him
To accept failure is one of the best ways to be free of living the lies we create for ourselves. And to realize why we failed is the foundation of avoiding the same mistake twice and to solve our problems so we don't fail again.
TheLuconic I no longer focus on any ones self development but myself. I to wasted too many years focusing others who did not deserve it and l now I just focus on myself, or those who really deserve to be helped.
Now this my friends...this is absolutely priceless this clip. This is the closest we will all ever be to having a private training session with the man. Because he is actually teaching real JKD here..even if the premise is fake, the teaching is absolutely for real. Awesome I love it!
@Kevin Alvarado You say JKD IS FAKE,MAYBE IT'S YOU THAT'S FAKE.WHATS YOUR VERSION OF FAKE,FAKE IN WHAT WAY,ARE STYLES FAKE,IF THEY ARE THEN THERE WOULDN'T BE ANY MARTIAL ARTS OF ANY KIND.
It’s amazing listening to his lines in these movies and his actual philosophy in interviews being the same. “I cannot teach you, I can only help you explore yourself.” His belief on martial arts was the purest expression of oneself I got to the end of the video and it’s a legit line from his interview. Love it
Just amazes me that people can actually take a merit to all the goofy shit that came out of Lee's mouth, he was (just an actor) and (nothing more or nothing less)!! The water becomes the glass or glass becomes the water, Jesus are we losing our minds!! Another example you could compare Bruce to, well he was actually a well respected teacher is Steven Seagal. Now Seagal was an excellent actor but where he went wrong is his reality with life, always bragging about himself.....could Steven beat Lee? Absolutely Lee would not have a chance against Seagal!👀👀😎😎😎😎😎😎💪💪💪💪= Seagal!
He was just an actor ? are you sure is that why every credible martial artist looks up to him including alot of guys in ufc. it shocks me how blind people are simple research is all you need to do and you'd know this. it's amazing how ignorant people are on nowadays. if not for bruce lee mma wouldn't be where it is. in fact it wouldn't be in the us. @@jeffeverett1599
Bruce Lee should be remembered not just for the obvious but also one of the greatest philosophers ever. He studied Eastern and Western Philosophy and then there's his own philosophy of The Art Of The Intercepting Fist aka JKD. His interlect was on another level. RiP Brucey Boy ❤
I have never heard one man speak so much sense within 7 minutes. My birthday is on the 24th and I'm getting Bruce Lee's book "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do." So looking forward to it.
I read the book. If you're expecting to simply know all Bruce's moves, prepare to be disappointed, then afterwards relieved, because you'll get something better. For starters, Bruce much like in his movies and TV spots, stressed that physical fitness is more important than skill. The opening chapters of the book are the lists of various exercises one has to undergo to get fit.
TheRealJamDawg that was his goal as an actor...so he can be himself and spread his wisdom to the world. This is according to a recent interview with his daughter.
I’ve come back to this video over and over to try and understand what Bruce meant by “Learning the Art of Dying” … clinging to life inhibits one from taking risks for fear of death.. accepting one’s eventual death frees us of it and empowers us to make the most of every opportunity that life affords us today, thereby taking risks without restraint
I've trained in martial arts my whole life im 40 yrs and no master or sensi or coach ever spoke this way dam bruce why did u have go so early u are and will always be my idol and teacher
@@Hadleyno1 He then made it become "true" to himself by adding "emotional content", like with Goku's True Ultra Instinct accepting his saiyan side and emotions while in UI.
God I wish I had delved into Bruce Lee way more when I was younger I perhaps watched like a few of his movies on old tv. I had a feeling he wasn’t alive then (I was just a kid) now I’m 34. He is definitely super philosophical and such a charismatic man. Powerful!
That you have Lee's philosophy in you now, even at 34, you have the rest of your life to find your own way, your own liberation. *The Tao of Jeet Kune Do* by Lee and Joe Hyams's *Zen in the Martial Arts* are two books that, by themselves, provide as much philosophy as practical approach. Hyams studied under Lee for a time and there are nuggets of wisdom in his small-sized book that I am willing to bet a philosophical human being like yourself will find useful. =) "May it be well with you." - Bruce Lee
Philosophically speaking this was the "Karate Kid" 15 years before the movie was even a fleeting thought in anyone's mind. Bruce Lee was a maverick and one of a kind. His philosophy reigns true to this very day if a person is intelligent enough to seek it, understand it and willing to grow into their fullest potential.
I wish you was still here cuz he would give a lot of us good Taste of understanding of what it is to be human and let us know that there is something beyond the physical perception of what we think of being human but to combined both body and spirit and focus to achieve what we desire
@@robertburnett2982 you’ve also perceived it well and I agree I wish I could get more of his teachings to be able to achieve what I desire cause there’s more to life than Just social fame or materialistic value something I have not yet mastered myself I admit but I want the wisdom he shared so I can my own philosophy and share it with others my own wisdom so can manifest and be just like water as he quoted Ik my words feel like they come from raw emotion but I truly feel to really be at peace with life and ur situation urself have to be free before you can fix the things around you
Learn the art of dying....no truer words have ever been spoken, I love Bruce Lee for all my life and will for the remainder of it! Even decades later I still am learning from this beautiful human being
@@dar6095 No worries, it happens to everyone, lol including me. We can just hope the powers that be see that many Bruce Lee fans will buy videos of him. He was simply amazing, his was a work if art in motion.
He wasn't a regular. Plus, this was 1971. The amount of time he got here, with the level of freedom he was given to share his Asian rooted philosophy, on a brand new show that was fighting for its own survival, was extraordinary.
After all these years, I finally get the Johnny Carson joke. Ed McMahon came back from vacation with home movies of the Grand Canyon. The movie was very badly done and you could hardly make out any of the principals in it. McMahon was delighted to show this to Johnny, but Johnny with the frustration of the poor movie presentation asked Ed, "Who took these movies? Longstreet?
It felt like I was his student for seven minutes just listen to him talk and feed off his wisdom is something that could never happen in real life Bruce will always be my favorite
Bruce teaching peoples to relax too, & so to feel good, to be happy & healthy, and to survive. With less stress and a good way to relieve our normal daily stress through training & exercise and the excellent martial art of Jeet Kune Do that he teaches. Bruces students do great to help him with his teaching, always. It was a great training session.
I have the book "Bruce Lee: Wisdom for the Way". One day, while I was sparring in Taekwondo class (I was a white belt at the time), I decided to take a look at that book before I went into class. Before stepping onto the mat, I kept repeating the first page over and over to myself "Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water... be water, my friend". Somehow, and I still don't understand how to this very day, I slipped into this state of mind where I just lost all of my concern for winning and losing, all of my ego. I simply made the decision to truly empty my mind of all ambition concerning victory, defeat, improvement, etc. That day, I literally dominated everyone I fought. The black belts, the red belts, the blue belts, the yellow belts. I was somehow able to simply RESPOND to my opponent without being defensive. It was like I was just BEING. As Bruce Lee said, I was "listening timelessly to everything". I no longer concerned myself with victory, with ambition. I want to find that emptiness again, but to truly be empty, you have to refrain from wanting, and just remember to "EMPTY YOUR MIND" :)
So Forlorn it’s true...think of a your mind like a cpu. If you close out all the tabs that are open (your skill) (your speed) (there skill) (there speed) (who’s watching) (what will they think) and just FIGHT, don’t think points don’t think about time, don’t think about anything else but there movement and reaction to it. You’ll be unstoppable

thats exactly why it was so disrespectful for quentin tarintino to dipict him how he did in his movie.. He could have made the character beat bruce lee but not make him out to be a buffoon the way he did.

I have NEVERRRR seen so much Enthusiam and Enspiration in an actor in ANY tv show ever till this date that put as much heart and energy as this memorable episode by Bruce Lee. I'm spellbound just by the way he talks and says it as it is...no B/S...just straight up....take as it is talk!!!!
he(the persona) lived in better time for him i personally think. he would love the opportunities im sure but look how many cocky people are nowadays - random fattys and nerds can comment on him without nothing happening to them at same time any similar commentator punk would even be punched out by random average guy. its sad that he died but this is just physical body that that died that and that happens to everyone if memory lives we live on hes teaching lives on. look how he is alive in video games and movies(ignore tarantino - i mean respectful movie portraials). i dont know but i assume he would be happy if people would aim high and walk on their own way. we all live and give he gave allot inspiration now all we can do is sculpt our own way. is someone really gone if their words, and effects live on? no
I just ordered the book "be water my friend". Really excited about it! Besides his martial arts background, his background in philosophy was ahead of of its time and still is. If he was still alive, I think he would have an even bigger impact to people. Not just martial artists
The force in Bruce Lee's kick is incredible. And it's amazing how much Bruce Lee knew about philosophy, physiology and various martial arts, at such young age. Also, his pushups with one finger or thumb in each hand are pretty cool.
Well you can learn a lot being in an orphanage as he did... It's like do/learn or die.. he refuses to be a victim that's why he lives this philosophy or natural instinct he has. In movies like this he doesn't need lines to be an actor. He can spout things that are beyond our knowledge comprehension we really need to think about what he's saying. His philosophy and martial arts philosophies pretty ahead of its time. Bless his soul his mine is so sharp is it all discipline or the will to survive

I wonder what the world of martial arts and cinema would have been like if Bruce had lived many more years. He would turn 83 this November. Imagine the amazing movies he would have made over the years.
Damn good. One of the best TV series episodes. Beautifully written by Stirling Silliphant. Powerfully acted by all hands, but especially by Lee. His charisma surges through every scene like a spiritual flood.
There's something about old school movies and shows that absorb you. The timing and feel of the music they use, everything they do enhances Bruce Lee's words and hammer home the lesson he's teaching. In a modern movie, he'd just say the words, the person would understand what he's saying and just go kick butt.
Everytime I listen to Giant Master Bruce Lee, I feel I am one of his students in front of him. His concept , his method, his ways of martial art , (even his style in teaching or in exploring us) are total different to what we are knowing and learning in today , especially in Martial Art World!!!!!! Kicking as we are not kick, Punching as we are not punch. This is crazy. This means we are not pushing ourself to punch or kick, and actually the things inside us (maybe our fear) starts automatic to do it and do it well.....!!! Sensing the sound of natural, the sound of birds, sensing our opponent/s, by basic instinct, and this means we can know what will he do....(intercepting opponent 's mind). Giant Bruce Lee leaves priceless wisdom about Martial Art and real living Life for us to comprehend. Giant never leaves us through these days, as he lives in every true Martial Artist's deepest place inside the heart!!
One thing i have realized about fighting is, too much technique or trying to be too practical will make ur weak and lose your composure, a good fighter is willing to receive pain, preparation, adaption, consistency, and speed is what ive come to realize is the best way. Been studying bruce since i was 7
in a state of awarness you can feel thing's , almost telepaticaly ..i call it the zone , where the eye lock and you feel time has stopped , and your just here , very present and conscious , in that state you can do miracles (if its with good intentions or to defend)
Sylvain descôteaux thats what we all have but it has to be for good intentions. another set of wise intelligent people like yourselves. thank you. truly.
Not to contradict what you say , but didn't Bruce also say " I do not fear a man who practiced one thousand kicks but a man who practiced one kick one thousand times". Would that be technique or something that becomes natural?
I remember this show as a little kid with the late James Franciscus this was a special episode this is the begining where the world would soon find out who and how special Bruce was.
Of all the videos we have of Bruce this may very well be the most valuable, as it gives us the greatest insight into what it might be like in order to train under him.
chapinero017 Depends on what your defenition of death is mine is the traditional 6 ft under method. and if you're beaten to a point ya can't fight anymore but can run then run.
chapinero017 I don't have that so that situation doesn't apply to me as of right now. I could have gotten revenge later if it did and who said I had to watch?
"Longstreet" aired between 1971 and 1972. James Franciscus was the blind insurance investigator. Bruce Lee appeared in 4 episodes. James Franciscus died in 1991, aged 57, from emphysema, due to cigarette smoking.
These clips are popping up on RU-vid and I’ve never seen them before. Been watching Bruce for 40 plus years and a serious fan of his. Bruce did a lot in his short time on this earth.
Bruce has a point on the finger jab. Even if one is blind, there are still nerves in the eyes, meaning that in a fight someone could still hurt him there.
How in my 45yrs of living have I only ever seen this video now ????? Been watching BRUCE since I was 5 yrs young and thought I'd seen every single movie and clip of the MASTER 🤣🤣 THANKYOU for the upload 🙏🙏
"Like everyone else, you want to learn the way to win, but never to accept the way to lose. To accept defeat - to learn to die - is to be liberated from it." [7:20]
Greatest and most dangerous warriors go into battle with that mindset. Fear is drained. Only the purest execution of the art of warfare walks in lockstep with them!
@@jerichopaolokingdom9488 This appears to be a particular episode of a 1970s TV show called LONGSTREET. It starred JANES FRANCISCUS as the blind attorney (this way you can look up the show by title or the actor). When it comes to industry "war stories", almost EVERYBODY has one about their association with Bruce. I've got a sensi who casually mentions he trained with Bruce, and has a pair of old-design sparring gloves from his school. Before you laugh, know that this same guy lugs a "trident " around on his keychain (it's murder on his cars' ignition assembly), and when he's challenged by those not in the know, he also casually replies "they gave it to me with the full ritual. No, I'm not a SEAL, I just train them in personal combat (think Shaq minus about 7 inches).
That's exactly what he said! He was being himself to the fullest and teaching people to be themselves, to do what they intend without a thought otherwise, particularly in combat, is what he loved.
bruce lee is so smooth as always. full of knowledges and wisdoms. very smooth in the way he talk, walk and preach. he was a gift to us from above but for only a short time. missed you Bruce. there will never be another Bruce Lee.
Bruce was decades ahead of anyone else who appeared on TV. This short clip embodies so much of the true martial spirit. Debates will fly for years about whether he was the best this or the best that. I wish not to go there. I just wish we had a hundred times as much of this thought on TV, then and now.
Bruce Lee's approach was practical and efficient. I like the way he incorporated eye-gouging and biting as natural responses of self-defense. Forget all those fancy moves. You do what it takes to survive. I remember when I was a kid and our class bully, who was large than I, charged me and knocked me to the ground. He laid on top of me, so I sunk my teeth into his chest. He belched out a blood-curdling scream and immediately got off me. He never messed with me again.
"If you try to remember, you will lose." As a student of Jeet Kune Do, I understand what he meant. It means that in a fight, you WANT to win. Animals don't think about HOW to fight, they do whatever it takes to win. We aren't animals, we are better than animals. Which means we should have more tricks up our sleeve than animals, which means we go into a fight without thinking we might lose. We go in knowing we will use everything at our disposal to win. Of course, if we have not practiced over and over the moves it takes, our muscle memory won't kick in when needed.
" I can't teach you, only help you to explore " genius. I have heard that before from old grizzled masters. That is a true teacher right there because no two people will ever really nove the same

Hi gang from my research of Sifu Lee and taking JKD he had no problem with teaching anyone who was willing to learn and understand what he had to offer. His philosophy, technical skills, and his understanding of the balance of life is what he offered. I had only wished that I would have been able to train and talk with him. The closest was talking and training with a student of James De Mile who was bruce Lee student, Sifu Kim Wong. But all in all thank you Master Lee for allowing us to be able to learn an art form from a different culture.
