This song is an anti war song and a critique of our corrupt Government. A Government that is still pushing false flags to sell more war. This is why it’s so obvious to me why the concept of “We The People” needs to be separated from The American Gov. Majority of Americans want Freedom, peace and prosperity, NOT war, division and fear. Criticizing our corrupt gov is actually pretty patriotic. To wrap this thought, I know I probably don’t see eye to eye with Bruce’s politics or even yours. Doesn’t change the fact that this song is a banger and I still value your right to your own thoughts and opinions. MERICA 🇺🇸
South park deal with that issue in the 100 episode S7E1. Separating the people and the goverment, I`m a little Bit Country and I´m a little bit Rock and Roll. I'm a Little Bit Country-South Park (Lyrics) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PBcWWT39aJU.html
BP, I knew this song would hit you differently if you knew the words. Vietnam tore a rip in that generation and Bruce witnessed it first hand on the streets. My older cousin just passed away from Agent Orange related illness. Our mental health, addiction, and homeless agencies were flooded. It still is affecting our brave men and women who went to VC. We need to remember them today.
Yes, It's an Anti-War song, but the song is about a Vietnam vet returning home from the war and being denied work, Vietnam vets were treated awful when they returned home
@@markperry222 Maybe not, but the Vietnam vets got shafted harder than any other generation's soldiers. Their fathers came back as heroes from WW2, and their sons went to Vietnam. The vast majority fought honorably and did what their country asked of them, and then came home to be shunned and neglected by the American people (not all Americans, obviously, but many). The Vietnam War was a stain on our nation's history, and part of that stain is how we treated the guys who stood up and did what their country asked of them, whether they volunteered or were drafted. it wasn't their fault the war was bullshit and built upon lies... Americans voted for the politicians that orchestrated that war, and those Americans are far more to blame for that travesty than the young men fresh out of high school who were sent over. All they did was what their country asked of them. and 58,000 of them didn't come home.
Sadly popular songs during the Vietnam War were protest songs. Our soldiers were treated like the plague when it was over. There was no fan fare for those caskets being unloaded from the back of the transport. There were no one officially greeting them.. There were some official's in the hanger giving speeches but the plane was not visible to them. Happy 4th of July Nana❤🇺🇲
and not only that, SO MANY of the young boys were drafted and had no say in the matter, yet they came back after all that trauma, just to be yelled at and spat on. Horrible.
As a wife of a deceased Vietnam Vet, this song means a lot to me. My husband served volunteering before beginning drafted. He was with the Army 175th Maintenance, a Hanger Rat in VinLong Vietnam. He passed away June 17th, 2023, the evening before Father's Day. My sons lost their Dad, Montana, and the USA lost a soldier. The way some in this country now think it is okay to call the military losers can kiss my ass!
My father served in vin long in 64 he was a Huey crew chief don’t remember the unit but they were called the roadrunners. If your husband was there in 64.I bet he and my father crossed paths!
My cousin was killed in Vietnam. My 2nd cousin (his son) was raised without his dad. A war that was kept going by Republicans that made a lot of money! John Kennedy was going to pull our service people out of the war but was assassinated first! Johnson didn't run for another term and Nixon escalated it!
And we are experiencing that Dark side right NOW! Thanks to TRUMP, MAGA SCOTUS, MAGA GOP, servers of the Darkest Elites, aka:The Heritage Society, we are going to lose our Democracy for a Dictatorship, PROJECT 2025 (google it). We must fight for our freedom, please understand and Vote Blue or we're screwed!💙👍🇺🇸
Many Americans think that free speech only applies to opinions that align with their own. There is too much anger and violence due to intolerance. I love the opportunity to have a conversation instead of an argument. Peace to you, your family and audience! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
You can love your country and support our troops while still being critical of our government. America is awesome in many ways but we have a long way to go to live up to the ideals of our Founders. They had to start imperfectly, but had faith in the future generations to make it better.
This is a protest song and is patriotic for that reason. It's a song in which the main character wonders what the hell happened to the America he thought he knew. In some ways, it's perfect for July 4th, 2024!
America gives us all wonderful opportunities. How you get from where you are to where you want to be depends on what your willing to do to get there. It's much harder for some than others, but possible. Rock on dude, Grandma Shirley out.❤
Exactly!! What is so especially cool about the Constitution of the U.S.A. is that it unifies 50+ other geo-political "states" by agreement AND it provides a means for amending it - a built in mechanism to keep up with the times and/or correct errors along the way.
Was fortunate enough to see him perform this live when the song was new. He started the song with the reminder "Blind faith in your leaders, or in anything, will get you killed."
This song is very anti government and how they treated the Vietnam vets. This song basically tells the story of a young man who gets into trouble in his hometown and instead of jail is sent to the military and ends up in Vietnam. His loses his brother and comes home to a country that no longer has a place for him. No job, no future security. Bruce has done a lot for Vets. He held two concerts back in 1981 in LA to highlight the plight of the Vietnam Veteran's Association which was running out of funds. He donated and worked with them to raise awareness. His is friends with Ron Kovic, a returning vet who wrote the book, Born on the 4th of July (which became a movie with Tom Cruise). Bruce was drafted but failed the physical due to a motorbike accident he had a couple of years earlier. Bart Haynes, the drummer in his first band (The Castiles) went to Vietnam and was killed. Likewise another New Jersey musician, Walter Cichone, went and was also killed. He wrote The Wall for Walter. Bruce has said he wondered who was sent in his place. You should listen to the acoustic version of this song. It certainly gives it a darker feel. You can't misinterpret the lyrics in that version. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5MtAxD9TE88.htmlsi=TDcaWT48UsC2em8-
It's protest song that dissects the cruel mistreatment of Vietnam veterans upon their return home after the war..I hope you react to Jimi Hendrix "Star spangled banner one time.He simulates the bombs, rockets, sirens all the chaos that was Vietnam & the 60's
There is a GIGANTIC difference between Patriotism and Nationalism. The first say "i love my country", the second say "my country is better and more worthy than yours". Try to find the bad one... *this is not meant for anyone, much less for Black Pegasus, this is just because many people seem to have a lack of understanding of the difference*
Name a country more fair & free than the USA. Where would you go if it is destroyed? There is no where else to go. That is why all the famous voting to leave never do & never will.
First off, he(the protagonist of the song)clearly got in "a hometown jam" and was offered the option of enlisting vs. incarceration. What happened when they came home is a shame. Anti-war protesters called them "baby-killers", their government let them down, cut them loose as they largely have continued to in the intervening years. Comedian and TV host Jon Stewart FINALLY was able to move forward legislation to offer help to veterans whose health and lives were destroyed by the aftermath of working over burn pits, much as he'd helped gain long overdue help and attention for 9/11 first responders suffering without significant, much-needed support. 😢💔 Happy 4th. ✌🏼😎🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
I actually did sing this song, in Germany, on the 4th of July, there for a friend's wedding. BTW, if you were born on a US Military base, anywhere in the world, you are considered to have been born in a US territory. This song demonstrates the incredible power of Springsteen's songwriting - it's the contradictions. That's why he's the boss❤🔥🎆
Protest of the Vietnam war. I felt so bad for the veterans of that war, they were drafted, sent by the government to do the job demanded, and were held responsible for the US governments choices when they came home. Respect to the Vietnam vets and all military active and veterans present and past who help keep us free.
That is a really good song. Love Neil Diamond. He's more from my parents generation but when I was around 9 or so I fell in love with his music and made darn sure I was able to see him in concert.
Another must by Bruce Springsteen is "The Rising". Bruce wrote it in remembrance of all the victims of 9/11. It is from the point of view of a firefighter as he is trying to rescue people while climbing the endless stairs in one of the Twin Towers. Twenty years later and this song still chokes me up.
may we remember our history, what we fought against in the world wars, and the mistakes of a past world as we sit on the cusp of dramatic change at this very moment. Will you continue to stand by America and fight for her democracy, or will you let the corruption rot this country from the inside out as you gladly sign away your rights under the guise of patriotism?
Bruce is very patriotic and a democrat. He loves our country. He loves it so much he points out its shortcomings so we can make it better. That is true patriotism.
This song was a protest of the Vietnam war and a protest of how Vietnam vets were treated once they got home. They didn’t get celebrated as heroes like the US soldiers did in the previous wars, there was no welcome home parade.
Thanks for the honest reaction. I've got 30 years with the federal government. It's not all bad, even the political side. It has been responsible for some very good things and some very bad, as well as a whole spectrum in between. Ultimately, it belongs to all of us and we can make it better by coming together and talking to one another and hearing each other's point of view, which your channel helps facilitate. As Bruce shows in the song, even through all the pain and frustration we feel somethings, in regards to our country or government, we are in this together and we can shout it together. We're American. This is who we are. This is where we're from. We'll remember the fallen and we won't give up on each other, even the ones who drive us crazy. 😂 Love to everyone. ❤ Happy 4th. 🎉
It's a pretty patriotic song if you think about it. Patriotic in the sense that in America, we are able to be critical of our government without fear of persecution or death, as in some other countries. You can love your country without loving the government. Love these reactions, man!
September 2001. Club Hell, Providence Rhode Island. Just a few weeks after 9/11. The club was open for an 80s dance night. The crowd was gathered and dancing and possibly a little uneasy with the recent historic events that had taken place just weeks ago. The night was coming to an end and the DJ played this song. And EVERYONE in that club was united as one, arms around each other, singing at the top of our lungs. No differences mattered at that point! We were Americans and we were all there as one. Seeing tears in perfect strangers eyes as we just let go and screamed Born in the USA. It was a shame a tragedy of that nature it took to erase any differences then and there, but man that was a beautiful memory I’ll forever have thanks to this song!!! What WHAAAAAT!!!!
The unchanged facts are if you have no economic choices and don't want to become a criminal the military is usually the only way out. The least of us fight for the rest of this. Bruce being from the industrial Northeast knew this better than anyone
Very well said. I love our our veterans without them what do we have nothing not our freedom for sure they put their lives on the line for our freedom. Hug veteran and say thank you 🙏
This song reminds me of all the rank and file grunts, both draftees and volunteers, who came back from Vietnam. i was born some years after the end of the war, but i love you guys. Welcome home.
Springsteen is such a great storyteller, pretty much unsurpassed. Listen to tracks like "Racing In The Streets" or "Jungleland" or so many of his other songs and just see how he paints a picture with his lyrics and music. Just incredible.
Most people don’t realize this song isn’t patriotic. He isn’t proudly stating he was born in the usa, he’s crying for help. “Please help me, i was born in the usa.” I cant help but cry when i listen to bruce, he puts his soul into his music. Truly a good man.
Let share with you some words that were given to a people also going thru some very dark times, these words have always been a comfort to me. "No matter what happens today, know this...... Tomorrow, the sun will rise, the wind will blow, the waters will flow, the grass will grow, and the sky will be blue." Chief Black Elk
My uncle was in college at Tulane, played defensive end. He was drafted to Vietnam and became a Green Beret. He learned fluent Vietnamese….he did some crazy things over there. He went through the whole war, didn’t wanna come back….he was gone mentally, unstable. He would have been perfect in a constant war zone after the government finished with him. He committed suicide around 20 years ago…. I still have his old boonie hat from the war. It’s a tradition with all my direct family that we went to college at Tulane University because of him. I followed in his footsteps but joined the Navy…as I got older and look back at my life I really understand how the political world 🌍 works and it’s sad and evil… Springsteen did nail this song.
One line says that he got in a jam so they put a rifle in his hands. A lot of young men (without parents with money) ended up going to Vietnam as an option to going to jail. Plus they had drafts from 1964 thru 1964-73. I was in college in 1970 when Kent State happened, and protests escalated over the entire country. I remember sitting in my dorm hallway with my dormmates and listening to a transistor radio as they called birthday's. My neighbor's boyfriend's date was 7th. He enlisted the next day so he could pick the branch of service he would be in. Thank god, my boyfriend was 260, and my brother was 329. An excellent book currently out is called The Women. It's about the female nurses in Vietnam, who few people even recognized as being there for years (even the VA), and what they endured both during and after the war.
I'm a buckeye and that's actually my first memory - my mom sitting on the coffee table crying about Kent state as we didn't live to far away. Now that I'm almost 60 myself I understand why they needed the guard to come in - the students were burning down building and terrorizing the city. Protesting is one thing - keeping a city in fear is another.
Ronald Reagan tried to coop this song and use it during his campaign rallies. He completely misunderstood the meaning of the song, and Springsteen shut that down quick and told Reagan he couldn't use it. Born in the USA is about the failure of the American Dream in the Reagan era trickle down 80s. High unemployment, factories closing down etc. Bruce was saying we should do better, for all people, not just for the rich Wall St people. This is an IRONIC song. It's NOT just a rah rah song.
@ginnys9831 You're completely wrong. The song was both about the Vietnam Vets coming back after the war and getting laid off from factory jobs and struggling to find work. The unemployment rate reached its peak under Reagan in the first half of the 80s. Reagan cut taxes drastically for the richest people but not for the struggling working man under the ridiculous theory of "trickle down economics". George Bush, his VP, called it "voodoo economics". The country was in a deep recession under Reagan. Mortgage rates were double digits. Look it up. The worst thing was Reagan completely misunderstood the song and Bruce told him "I don't give you permission to misrepresent what this song is about for your campaign." HE wrote the song during the REAGAN presidency, not the Carter presidency. You're clueless. Nice try at rewriting history. I lived it.
@@kbrewski1 bs none of what you say is true the economy was the best during Reagan following the Carter mess. Reagan never referred to it as trickle down that was invented by the liberal press.
I agree with you 💯. Sometimes it's hard to separate a singers raw talent and his or hers political affiliations or societal beliefs but I just listen to lyrics and talent. He's got fire. I love your channel and would be honored to meet you and shake your hand one day. Keep doing what you do.
VietNam vets were NOT welcomed back like they are now. They came home silently. This was during the late 60's and early 70's. So they did not get the respect they deserved. There was a resurgence of patriotism in the early 80's. This song made it ok and cool to be publicly patriotic and led to a belated welcome back to these deserved veterans. My brother was a VietNam Vet and I saw our troops come home from Iraq in the early 2000's. VERY different homecomings.
We sent our boys to fight that unwinnable war in SE Asia. And when they returned home they didn't get any parades or Thank You's. They were spat on and called Baby Killers! The VA was a true POS back then. Many died from treatable ailments while waiting forever for an appointment to see the PRIMARY CARE doctor! Thankfully things have greatly improved there. Returning servicemen, even those moving from a stateside base to another stateside base, were told to change out of their uniforms before entering an airport least they he verbally assaulted by their "fellow" Americans. Bruce covered what he could in the allotted song time. Mostly about the refinery boss saying, "Son, if it was up to me." Getting a half decent job as a Vietnam vet was was nearly impossible, especially while the war was still going on. Way too any Vietnam vets ended up in prison. Lots ended up living on the streets addicted to drugs. Luckily the (slight) majority had strong families that knew what problems awaited the return of their sons. So many networked and were able to help them find employment where the father worked or where a friend/neighbor worked. Bruce sang about the troubles of these vets. But also of the love of country they still carried, and carry still. No matter how they were (mis)treated upon their return home. Having survived one hell hole to have to step carefully in the hell hole called HOME.
man i teared up when you said you've been dissapointed by artist in the music industry the last 4 years......me too man me too....artists i really connected with and really spoke to me completely changed and became the thing i thought they were speaking against. not just the last 4 years though.....artists i really respected 22 years ago.....when i did what i thought i needed to do to protect my family and my country and went to iraq...all of a sudden those artists were calling me a shill and a pawn and a murderer......it was really hard man
You, absolutely, understood this song, from the get-go. It is NOT a celebration, it is an indictment. ...the vast majority of the increased audience who gravitated to this artist, this band, did NOT (or refused to). This is the core of what Springsteen & E Street have always done, and do BEST!
For a purely feel good patriotic song, please watch the video of Lee Greenwood and the Singing Sergeants (individual military members singing with him from separate locations). I guarantee you'll feel good.
I'm of that generation, I knew several guys that went to Vietnam, either met them when they returned, or knew them before they went over there. Still have letters from those who wrote me. Some were disrespectful to the soldier when they returned, not all. As stated in an earlier comment the governement was not exactly blame free. I recommeond you watch the movie Born On the 4th of July. It is with Tom Cruise (who is very good in it) based on the true story of Ron Kovic, who was paralyzed in Vietnam, and what happened to him when he returned. Ron Kovic wrote a book and it was turned in a movie by Oliver Stone. Ron Kovic and Bruce Springsteeen are friends.
Nice the red, white and blue on your shirt. Welcome to the Netherlands, Bruce was here just a few days ago. How coincidence. To all Americans: happy 4th of July!
If you understand and listen to the lyrics deeply, this is not an anti-war and corrupt government. It's talking about fighting a war for our freedom which was done in the American revolutionary war is how we got our freedom not fighting foreign countries.
There is this little know 1992ish movie called Dogfight starring River Phoenix and Lily Taylor that takes place over one night in San Francisco before a young marine ships out to Vietnam. It is beautiful, funny, maddening and heartbreaking. Also, there is a brief appearance by Brendan Fraser in his first movie role.
This is an anti-American song that was released in the eighties to protest against Reagan and the establishment of the Republicans at the time along with the treatment of veterans after serving in Vietnam along with being an anti- war song.
