I love this song…with all the madness in my soul. I was at this show. 65K people silent, listening, feeling, crying. Minutes later, dancing, singing, laughing, rejoicing. Spirituality, humanity, love.💕❤️💕❤️💕❤️
I’ve not been a true fan, but I respect the music and performances of Bruce. His autobiography was a great read also. I heard this song last night while watching Cop Land, perfect song for the scene. Saw this performance now and it’s an absolute gem.
Working late to avoid going home to a failing marriage. Decide to listen some music. "In the end it was something more I guess That tore us apart and made us weep" Hits like a goddamn train.
That's why he's the worlds greatest lyricist. He hits home like no one else can. I saw him 12-8-80 the night Lennon died. At one point in the show he does- Point Blank, Stolen Car, & Wreck on the Highway..... You could hear a pin drop amongst 18.000 fans at the Philadelphia Spectrum!
Just look at his face when performing this masterpiece...this man's glorious music got under my skin and hooked me way back in 1982 my last year at school in Edinburgh, Scotland. Today, some 30 years later I am still as speechless at this man's talent as I ever was. His music has been the soundtrack of my life, and touched me like no others has.
Same for me, in Milan Italy, and for millions of people out there from all different parts of the world, that have got their lives changed by this incredible artist.
This song reflects the “spirit of Springsteen” in its truest form. You can visualize a young man sitting on the edge of his single bed with a guitar. The window is open, and it’s in the middle of the night in Freehold. The screen less window is open, and a slight breeze rustles the curtains, a storm is approaching. As his fingers find the chords, he pauses from time to time to write the lyrics in well-worn a spiral notebook. Shirtless he looks at the ceiling waiting for the magic his dreams bring
This song along with "Something in the Night" from Darkness are the two best songs he ever wrote that explore the unbelievable pain that human beings can endure in pursuit of love and happiness. I am 48 yo now and I swear both these songs still translate today to loves lost now as they did when I was 16 and thought Id surely not survive whatever latest heartbreak I was confronting. I agree though, the album version of this can never be matched, maybe the most haunting song he ever recorded.
We are the same age. You posted this 12 yrs ago, and I’d as relevant today as it was then…as it was when we were 16. I hope life.. and love, are treating you well. To Bruce 🥂
Bruce is the only rockstar with the balls who can perform un incredibly sad song and some power rock and roll song in the same concert with everyone enjoying it. A sectacle of a performer. Grazie Bruce!
Do yourself a favor...listen to this song while you're driving down a highway late at night. It'll give you chills. What a great song. What a great musician.
This always has and always will be one of my favorite songs of all time. I heard the song in Copland and I was a Spingsteen FREAK within the space of a month. This tune is simply. I prayed with everything I had that he would play it when I saw him but I new it would never happen. To hear this one live you have to be very lucky. Peace.
Best listened too in the early hours before dawn on a hot summers night with a cool breeze blowing back the curtains. That’s not the silvery moon casting shadows across the floor but the fond memories of a love lost when you were “Young and bold.”
Just heard this on watching Copland !! Watched it many times before and never picked this up .. absolutely blew me away listening to the full version .. classic
This is how i got into this song AND Bruce a bit over 20 years ago. I'd never really given him much a listen until then, i was in my mid 20s. Been in love with this song ever since. And bruce's music overall.
I discovered this song in that movie in 1997. I was two when the record came out so.... It's also how i became a Boss fan. It's still my favorite song of his i think. And this performance.....
He has never been involved in a scandal, donates his time and talent to good causes, has never sold out and works his fingers to the bone. Bruce is what a true Hero is. Thank you God for sharing him with us.
I get chills listening to Bruce's deep, haunting songs like this one. He has so many. I wish he'd play more songs like this in his shows and less of his "party"songs..not that I don't enjoy the latter though.
2am drive back to Brooklyn after work. It was beautiful every single time. Always on the Jersey side of the tunnel- every night. It was visceral and it still is... Thank you Jersey you bastard I love you
Mind-blowing that a beautiful, haunting, deep story can be conveyed with all the associated raw deep emotions in less 10 minutes...and you feel as if you are there. Humans can be amazingly clever...when they want to be! This man is truly gifted!
I heard this song for the first time today, on my drive to work. My husband is leaving to return to his homeland on another Continent, and my heart is broken. This song was spot on with my sadness, so I sent it to him. A beautiful sad song for a beautiful sad ending.
i always feel like i am been transported to the great state of new jersey when listening to bruce, finally my dream came true last year, got to visit new jersey and nyc, now i know why these great places are so celebrated in song, why americans sing about there great country so much, love yanks and america!
It was the last time he would play on this song in concert with the ESB. Next time the band performed Stolen Car was 2009, after which Danny had passed.
There are no words to adequately describe the genius of my hero but let me try anyway, one Bruce song would be a career for any other songwriter so you may like other performers , as i do, but there is and always will be only one Bruce Springsteen and we should give thanks for his commitment to great and meaningful music. Oh and before I go thank you for this wonderful post.
The show "Cold Case" "Eigth years later" (S03, E11) tells the story of this song. Whole episode is only Springsteen- soundtrack. Check it out, it is beautiful!
Clarence sax will always be the story, but his hand percussion was always a key ingredient to their live performances. Even something as simple as a tambourine.
To me the car is a metaphor for his situation, he is emotionally in a place that he is taking responsibility for , carrying guilt , seemingly endlessly.
" The soundtrack of my life" Top, ich hätte es nicht besser sagen können. Meine Frau kann nicht verstehen, wie ich mir so etwas, nach so vielen Jahren noch anhören kann. Aber das geht soooooooooooo unter die Haut es ist immer wieder unglaublich. "Long live the BOSS" from Germany
this song takes me away as it has done for many many years i may be gettin older now but when i want to go back to my innocence this and anything by bruce takes me back and im a child again...thanks bruce
Damn his vocals are just so off the normal that no one can sing like Bruce. Most of his iconic songs sound identical due to the way he sings his lyrics in order to give the mood of the lyrics their unique style. Bruce's mid 80's vocals were in my opinion his best period of singing.
Another example of ying/yang. Because Bruce may have had some personal experiences of pain and lessons it is the reason he is able to put together such soulful songs that touch us personally. He was given that gift of drawing upon personal experiences and creating masterpiece after masterpiece. The amazing thing is that he is able to expand on those emotions during his live performances. Brings u right into the experience and leave you emotional moved. A lot of people are not on that same plane but there a lot of us that are.....for me it works and I cant get enough of it. A true artist of his time. Thanks Bruce. You are truly "The Boss"
Couldn't of said it any better. I always feel sorry for the people who don't get to hear a song like this just because they think Bruce is just that guy who did Born in the USA. I usually make them listen to Nebraska or The River to try and show them the poetic range that Bruce has.
Yes, that is correct. I avoided Bruce for a very long time because of that stigma. Having said that, Born IS a great album now that I have given it a chance. Nebraska is the one that brought me fully into the fold though. So bleak and perfect.
He only played this a handful of times on the BIUSA tour; I believe this is the only performance of the tune from 1985 as well. It’s played in 84 in the Oakland Coliseum and Tempe as well. So, this was a sweet surprise all those nights ago 🎸🎷
@lp4141 :) I am so grateful to be alive during the time of Bruce! Seen him live for the first time in 1978 and 26 times since! I will never stop going to his shows as long as he keeps coming.... The man is a musical, lyrical, storytelling Genious!!!!!
Bruce at the absolute height of his powers. Amazing, powerhouse imagery and that incredible voice. I have listened to Springsteen on and off for about 20 years now and he is still a songwriter of enormous power.
When i was a kid my dad always said that Bruce before he became a singer he stole cars...I don't know if it's true, but I did some research but I never found anything. I haven't spoken to my father in four years because of his alcohol problems, but if I spoke to him again, I would ask him how he knew Bruce was stealing cars. Certain things stay in our heads and we never managed to get rid of them, my father was a musician, an excellent guitarist and a listener of good music with vast musical knowledge, I always grew up listening to stories of bands and singers, and whenever I hear Bruce Springsteen I remember this history.
Absolutely correct........your point? If it's that Bruce isn't a great guitar player.....you win. Actually Bruce isn't a great singer either. But what he is a brilliant and creative artist that writes engaging lyrics that touch real people. He leaves it all out there when he plays live. If this song doesn't get to you then you don't get Bruce.......
This song. I love it ... the passion, the pain, the pure honesty. I hate it ... forces reality upon you and makes you face your mistakes. The mistakes of you make can haunt you forever.
I had a beer few minutes ago after a long hard working week. I put a piece of wood on my fire place while I was looking for a moment full of meaning and joy in Boss songs here in my sittin room. I met your message. All the best Novacoma. Cris
I used to listen to this song every night In fact the whole river album But this song I used to play it on my cassette player lol Fall asleep listening to it Helped the break up I guess Thanks Bruce x
This takes me back what a great song, to all you youngsters get out and enjoy yourself every day for sure time moves so fast all of a sudden you are 50 and times like these are history.
You know what's funny? I really kind of like some of his stuff, but it was just kind of on the outside of what I was getting into all through the early seventies and right into the 80s. But when I dig deep, this guy really really has some Talent. It might not be that he sings like Roger Daltery or something. Please guitar like Richie Blackmore . - But there's some Talent here and I think you know what I'm getting at. The guy just has a feel and a vibe. He comes from a place where a lot of us have never wanted to be, and wish we could get out of, and we listen and maybe this kind of a song helps you deal with it. My Hometown comes on my Bluetooth sometimes at work, and I get a little tear going. I have to stop work and just I fade back into the days of being a seven-year-old and a 12-year-old right up through teenager in my hometown where I ran the streets and ruled the neighborhood with my friends. But, like everything else we get older and we leave and the old places just fall apart and people are leaving by the thousands
Magic song. it was already a rarity at that time to hear it live. this was the last time he played this since 2003, played 2 times on The rising tour and one time in 2005 during the Devils & Dust solo acoustic tour,,,,i hope to listen it in italy in july...
Whoever it was that posted this video of "Stolen Car", thank you! I'd never seen this song performed live, and it's one of my personal favorites from that time.
wonderfull, I would still love to see this song live, and would like to see a video of the tracks version.... if one exists... C'mon Bruce...release this sort of concert stuff
A song as deep and simple as this does not need multiple chords to enhance it...it would take away from the beauty and meaning. Bruce's lyrics, feeling and his live performances make him what he is. He plays well enough to be in RS top 100) rarely witnessed in shows as he has Nils and Stevie to do the "work" as he crowd surfs, goes into the audience, etc...burns an estimated 2,000 calories in 3.5 hr...I could care less how many chords he plays. Bruce Springsteen isn't a noun...it is a VERB.
