This is when this band is at it's best. Playing on a small stage, in a small, crowed bar, and they are all close together on stage. Just like the 70's.
"So you keep a little secret down deep inside your dresser drawer For dealing with the heat you're feelin'- out on the killin' floor No matter where you step you feel you're never out of danger So, the comfort that you keep's a gold-plated-snub-nose-thirty-two WELL, I heard you got a job downtown, man that leaves your head cold !" This is JUST SCREAMING purgatory, doom, and destruction..... He fucking kills it.
Bruce tends to write a LOT of songs, polish them THEN select songs that best fit his album's theme. I think this song was written around the time of Born in the USA album. It would have fit in with its hometown life theme. Also not sure why he didn't put it out as a B-side to one of the singles.
There was only so much room on Born in The USA. When pressing a vinyl record, too much audio on one side causes the overall sound to suffer. And this song wouldn't have fit on Tunnel of Love.
agree it's a great tune especially live, of course, which is why its live versions are better known than any studio version. My guess he didn't include it is that the song is too long (it would have been the longest song on Born in the USA, from whose sessions the song came about) with lots of rocking out that's more appealing in a live setting. It's also somewhat monotonous and the era's production techniques don't in my mind mesh well with the song; the gated drums and synthesizers characterizing many of the songs on Born in the USA have no place in this raw tune.
I play this song everyday to warm up ..first thing. It kicks ass. Fun as hell and easy. Neighbors aren't all digging it but they need to get out of bed...it's 5 am for God's sake 😅
Steven Hodgson I caught Bruce at the stone pony one night ....was sitting at the end of the bar with his hat tucked low when all of a sudden he stood up grabbed a guitar and played a hour and 45 minute set Best 2 hours of my life
I don't know why this wasn't on Born In The USA. It's a great album, make no mistake, but if this had made the cut, it would have been his first #1 single. Guarantee that. It's beyond ass-kicking. I am glad we got to hear it, though. He could have just as easily kept this gem in the vaults forever. Makes me wonder what else from those sessions that didn't make the cut. Let's hear 'em, Bruce!
this song kills coming from a guy who's played metal all of his life and love's all music from Hagard to steely Dan and not particularly a boss fan but when a song is strong you just have to tip your hat!!!
What was wrong with the opening theme to 'Sopranos'? It seemed perfect and so well threaded to the landscape being passed through, providing so much information and context for what viewers were about to see. The series included murders but was about corruption, arrogance, cynicism, greed and criminality as joint causes at work.
"The comfort that you keep's a gold-plated snub nose .32" is one of my favourite Springsteen lines. Along with almost every line in "Badlands". This is a great, GREAT song, really underrated
Both Bruce and Elvis are Kings of Music; each in their own very unique and fabulous ways. How can you compare one human being to another or one great musican to another? Just enjoy them.😊
I had to wait 25 years to finally see and hear the song "Murder Incorporated". it to me is some of his most passionate work. The beat, guitar licks/ solo and drumwork in conjunction with everything else-makes it a monster driving and action song.
To make such a powerful rock and at low revolutions is one of the virtues of bruce. He did it also in the lp of darkness and in many other great songs. He is the best !!
Bobby's got a gun that he keeps beneath his pillow Out on the street your chances are zero Take a look around you (come on now) It ain't too complicated You're messin' with Murder Incorporated Now you check over your shoulder everywhere that you go (oh yeah) Walkin' down the street there's eyes in every shadow (oh yeah) You better take a look around you (come on now) That equipment you got's so outdated (come on now) You can't compete with Murder Incorporated Everywhere you look now, Murder Incorporated So you keep a little secret down deep inside your dresser drawer For dealing with the heat you're feelin' out on the killin' floor No matter where you step you feel you're never out of danger So the comfort that you keep's a gold-plated snub-nose thirty-two I heard that you You got a job downtown, man, that leaves your head cold (oh yeah) Everywhere you look life ain't got no soul (oh yeah) That apartment you live in feels like it's just a place to hide When you're walkin' down the street you won't meet no one eye to eye Now, the cops reported you as just another homicide But I can tell that you were just frustrated From living with Murder Incorporated (Murder) Incorporated Everywhere you look now, Murder Incorporated Come on now, baby Murder Incorporated Everywhere you turn, it's Murder Incorporated Come on now, darling
On this day in 1995 {February 21th} for the first time in seven years, Bruce Springsteen performed live with the E Street Band, the venue was the Tramps Nightclub in New York City... "Murder Incorporated" would be the first song performed in a thirteen song set... Thirty-five years earlier in 1960 Peter Falk would receive a 'Best Supporting Actor'* nomination for the movie 'Murder, Inc.'... * Lost to another Peter; Peter Ustinov for 'Spartacus'...
If like this song then check out "Further on down the road" from "The Rising" album - it's this song on Meth. And there is a brilliant live version of "Further on Down the Road" recorded in Dublin (2006) that's more Folkey, but just as good. Various postings on RU-vid.
That goes to show that a) it's still very much a matter of taste (I feel like all of the bands you listed kind of lean one way musically and it's not a way I personally enjoy longterm); and b) "of our time" can be pretty relative - how long ago did Led Zeppelin break up again? :P As much as I like Springsteen, my pick for the honour is Mark Knopfler. :-) (Basically I tried to do a list of examples of Knopfler's eclectic output here, and failed on account of it getting too long to work as a punchline...) But more than that, I think as much as I like either musician, picking one over another is kind of silly. The best ones - and both Springsteen and Knopfler fall into that category - have a lot of influences and musicians they admire themselves, and isn't life much richer that way?
Murder Incorporated Is A Killer Kick-Ass Song By Bruce Springsteen And The East Street Band It Totally Rocks Needs To Be Fully Cranked Up All The Way Up To Full Maximum Volume.
This video (which I know MTV played on their Top 20 Video Countdown show) version of “Murder Incorporated” is better to my ears than the original on Bruce’s Greatest Hits album.
YES! Thank you. It's so frustrating to look up a video and peruse the comments, only to find every last one is about how much the author hates someone else rather than what they think of the song you're listening to. I am quite fond of this song, but I wish there was a more cinematic video to the studio version. Someone should at least throw an amv together. Maybe with clips from The Outsiders.
