This is rip-roaringly fast, intense, electrifying and dynamic. No other conductor comes close to these tempi and levels of drama. And yet all the rural charm and lyricism is there as well. It should not be possible. Unrepeatable Bruckner magnificence.

This is an astonishingly good performance and recording of Bruckner 5. The pizzicato passages are pungently alive and audible. The detail is wonderful. A full-bodied orchestral sonority throughout. This is one of those performances that demonstrate Furtwangler's brilliance as a conductor. In spite of the rigorous tempos the lyrical sections are magically brought across. They are stunningly beautiful and seamlessly shape the whole of the work. Masterful, would be an understatement. This is magnificent! Thank you!

The Bruckner 5th seem sto have a Parsifal kind of sonority to me. Klemperer's recording is 79 minutes long as compared to Furtwangler's 67. Amazing, both are good. This one is my favorite. Great sound for 1942. I think Furtwangler's own composing gave him great insight into other composers. Klemperer was a composer, too. The great thing now is so many versions on RU-vid.. I heard Sawallisch perform it with the Philadelphia Orchestra and bought a download of it from the Orchestra's website. Wonderful performance.

This is music that speaks to the heart. For anyone who ever had the experience of one’s life being swept away by catastrophic events, the emotions are unmistakable. In Bruckner’s as well as Furtwängler’s times, the common experience was war. But the emotions in Bruckner’s music are universal and not confined to one or another particular episode in history. It speaks about the pain one experiences when one’s life is being swept away by inexorable external circumstances and one’s other emotional reactions to it. Like Beethoven’s 5th, Bruckner’s 5th was also a “fate” symphony. Furtwängler’s 1942 interpretation of the finale was grim, shadow-possessed, militant, and reeking of the terror of fighting evil with evil. No doubt it fitted perfectly with the public mood in Berlin right in the midst of WWII. However, the music didn’t necessarily have to be interpreted this way, as it could also be interpreted less stridently in the mood of “let’s get one’s hands dirty and dig oneself out of a hole.” Furtwängler’s recording in 1942 was certainly one of the most electrifying and interesting. Its documentary status in history made it uniquely special. I also love the other benchmark recordings (e.g. Jochum, Celibidache), but they did not possess the quality of music made in wartime that this one had.

This is the most supreme playing of Bruckner's No5. Only Furtwanger who can understands the essence of Bruckner ,can conduct the original feeling of mixture of sublime and strong earthy feeling of Bruckner as he mentioned in his great essay of "On Bruckner" in his immortal " Tone and Wort" essay! He recreated the composer's original feeling by going to the score!! if you have some doubt, pls read Furt's essay in German or English or Japanese(音と言葉)。 Sampei Takayama

Agreed. Some comments mention 'liberties' with tempi but Bruckner's enigmatic 5th is open to this in the hands of a master. Bruckner was playful, teasing, lyrical, strict and profound all at once in this work. Mahler would have likely conducted it as WF did here. The so-called 'cathedral of sound' often associated with Bruckner is certainly here -- but we get to play in the gardens too.

While my go to recording remains Haitink/Cocertgebouw, I hear subtle things In this recording I don't hear otherwise. And there is, of course a difference in stereophonic quality. But all things considered, this remastering is impressive. Not impressive is the sinful advertising in the middle of the symphony. RU-vid must understand the need to hear a symphony without interruptions. I do understand the need for RU-vid to make money. But not like that!

1. Fabulous playing from the Berlin Philharmonic, who obviously knew and respected Furtwängler. 2. By today's standards, Furtwängler's conducting is hopelessly wayward and inconstant in tempo. I myself tend to prefer a greater uniformity in tempo, more like Klemperer or Celibidache or Karajan at his best. But Furtwängler's approach may well be closer to how these symphonies were played originally. And with all its variability, the performance still works beautifully.
@jochanaan58
@jochanaan58 8 лет назад
So Bruckner also wanted a strict approach here. Okay, that makes sense. And a performance can be beautifully played and still wrong by composers' wishes.

I feel for the string players, it is difficult enough to play at more moderate tempo. I don't know what Bruckner's markings were, however this is far too fast for me to bring out the dignity and religious grandeur of the symphony. Not for me I'm afraid.

Furtwanger, always the individualist, unlike Karajan whose individualism centered primarily on his fashion sense. You don't come to Furtwangler to hear what you've already heard you come to hear something new, that's why it is not recommended to go to him if you want to hear a classical work for the first time.

Bruckner was born near Linz where Hitler himself was born. Bruckner was from sturdy Upper Austrian 'peasant' stock. His monumental music fitted the Nazi ideology. For once the Devilish embraced the Godly. Absurdly, there are some who still hold this association as a reason to hate the already long-dead 19th century Bruckner and his music. Poor, poor Bruckner, life was so unfair to him even in death.

I never say to myself: ''now I want to listen to a bit of Sarasate", rather ''I now feel like listening to Prihoda or Heifetz play sth with which they can show their musical thought and infinite details of sound.''

I love Mahler 7. Nice handle! I suppose you prefer Celibidache for your Bruckner experience. What I love about Furtwangler is that his tempos fluctuate and go in accordance with the dramatic sweep of the score. He built such wonderful tension and release by doing it. The final movements' great fugue has never sounded more exciting nor noble. It is the beauty of interpretation that makes this music vital. I like slower readings too. But, this is thrillingly well-played and conducted in my humble opinion. Bruckner was a huge Schubert admirer. Somehow, this Bruckner 5 sings and dances like a great Schubertian bird.
