In this video D tastes 3 different Brunello di Montalcino from 2012. This year was rated by Wine Spectator with 96 points. The 3 Brunellos are: 1. Barbi, 2. San Felippo and 3. Antinori Pian Delle Vigne. The Antinori wins. Antinori's Pian Delle Vigne 2012 scores 4.3 on Vivino. D thinks this is underrated! When it first came out 3 years ago it sold for $65. If you can still get the 2012, it is easily worth $100. The 2016 is available on Vivino for $70.

My favorite Brunello has been the Il Cocco so far, organic small producer that you can only buy ordering directly from them, but that Antinori sounds really promising, just added it to my wish list, starting at around 40 Euro here in Europe :)

I had it recently, Andrew. The 2010 drinks well. However, if properly stored, you have another 10 years to drink it.

Lambrusco did not come Veneto, It comes from Emilia Romagna and a small portion over the border to Lombardia

Few things have changed in Montalcino since your notes were written. Since 1998 the total compulsory aging is still 4 years before the wine is put on the market but the time spent in wood has been reduced from 3 years to 2 and the use of barrels other than the traditional 120 hl Slavonian ones, so some have started using French oak barrels. By changing the timing and size of the barrels, it is possible to have wines ready to drink in less time. Most modern Brunellos can also be drunk immediately and it is no longer necessary to wait ten years for the canons. However, this also affects the longevity of modern Brunellos, in fact I find many already tired after 10/15 years. Fortunately, not all producers of Montalcino are in a hurry to make their wines ready, people like Soldera, Costanti or Poggione work in the traditional way without using shortcuts and their wines, if the climate allows it last for decades. I believe instead that the wines of Antinori or Casanova di Neri are best checked every 5/6 years. 🤔

I had the Antinori brunello di montalcino 2015 and it was superb. Now I am looking at $20.00 more for a bottle. I wish Antinori was more open to the consumer getting to know great wine. Cheap wines not necessarily the best, but some quality wines not approachable to beginners looking for affordable wines.

The 2015 Brunellos are so good, prices will rise quickly. Get a few bottles and put them away. Carpazzo is another good recommendation for $40/ bottle.
