While I have great respect for Bruno as a competition fighter, in fact, one of the best; I have little respect for his teachings an style for real life street application self defense. I mean, in real life how are you just going to sit down in front of your opponent, or scoot around on your butt, or hold onto your standing opponent's leg? He would beat you to the edge of your life and then pummel you some more. This is what the Gracie's have been talking about for the past few years (in particular Rickson) as they are seeing the ultimate street worthy art that defeated all other martial arts get watered down into a sport.
Bruno Malfacine has been doing BJJ for well over 20 years. I'm more than certain that he has trained many different take downs that work well for his height and weight, which would be more than enough if he were to get in a street altercation. However, this is not a street altercation it's sport Jiu Jitsu and it's smart to pull guard on someone that big in order to win. I'll never understand why people see a high level black belt pull guard and assume they have no take down ability after training for so long. Believe it or not, the Miyao brothers also have take down ability.
How can you train for 20 years and not know enough take-downs to at least attempt one. Even if you get taken down, then the fight is in your area of strength.
bobbie joe shmo Not sure, try asking him that. But when it comes to competition I always assume, "play it safe and win." I see Roberto Abreu Cyborg practice take downs ALL THE TIME but he pulls guard quite a bit in tournaments.
ewewt ayew pulling guard and the "booty scoot" are two VERY different things. While I'm not a fan of either, at least when you pull guard, you engage your opponent in some way.
It's effective in jiu-jitsu competiton though, just look at what marcelo garcia does, It's based on the same guard. And Bruno is the best rooster weight in history, what he does in open weight is very different from what he does at his weight
