The Iron Brain - thinks about math so you don't have to! ...or do you?
Today we'll be looking at a small, lightweight electromechanical. This one is actually so neat that it wouldn't at all be impossible to bring it to work/class, depending on your circumstances!
Hope you enjoy, please leave your feedback in the comments and if you'd like more of this sort of thing, or me showing off any other curiosities I come across, don't forget to subscribe.

Maybe I will! Honestly, I had a stupid amount of fun putting this together. Learned a lot, too.

Holy Cow! I've bought exactly the same machine the same day you've posted this wideo. It produced nice sizzling sound and emited smal plume of smoke afer five minutes of playing with it. I've replaced blown paper capacitor with modern foil one and everything works well. I really enjoy indicator on the revolution counter as well. Cheers from Poland!

Csesc! I've certainly had the smokeplume of death before. Always a pain, but usually fixable, fortunately. =) Glad to hear you got yours working again!

I like a lot the mechanical calculators but your voice is so calming! Could you make a podcast or audiobook of something?

Your voice is very relaxing. I enjoy learning about the different calculators that you posses. Keep up the good work! 😊

Great review, thanks for sharing! Wonder what the professor would say if you ended up bringing it to class instead of your traditional calculator... lol

If the professor was cool enough they'd want to play with it, no doubt!

Interesting machine. I generally like hand cranked machines more, but this one has a charm of it's own. Very compact design.

I just love your youtube channel. Your vids never run long enough. Minus 6 outside! Here in Queensland Australia it was a beautiful 33 degrees Celsius today!

Oh goodness! I don't know if I should feel jealous or lucky! I'll have to work out some way to fill up a longer video, then! Suggestions are always welcome. No promises, but one can't have enough inspiration! =)
@jameskwaka
@jameskwaka 6 лет назад
Suggestions? Just speak more. You have a wonderful voice, so melodic and unassuming. Perhaps you could do comparisons of different calculators from the same era, pointing out the differing ways two machines arrive at the same answer. Now that would be cool.

I think Grimme, Natalis & Co. was trying to avoid infringing Facit's patent on fully automatic pinwheel machines, even though this calculator works via an entirely different method.

I'm, surprisingly enough, also not really a math guy. I like the mechanics and the practical application thereof.

Ah yes another great video of a fascinating machine. In your videos I learned to say ‘arithmometer’ instead of calculator, not to mention a lot about calculation devices!

Thank you for nice video, sir. I have mine 13RK, but I'm not able to recognize year of construction. My serial number is 266737. May you help me to find production year? Thank you!

Apparently numbers 257522 to 271579 were made in 1952, according to an article from Historische Bürowelt, issue 61.

a bit offtopic, but how is the steam controller? i've never used one, but all of the controllers i've used have unsatisfactory d-pads for 2D games.
@1stSpyGuy
@1stSpyGuy 6 лет назад
I'm not sure the Steam controller is what you're after, then. The D-pad on it is rather quite big, so you'd be moving your thumb a lot to control the game. I'd say it's greatest strength is versatility. It can pretend to be a mouse+keyboard or any kind of controller, really. This makes it very useful for doing computer stuff on a TV. Still not 100% sold on touchpad over right analogue stick, however, but I'm getting used to it.

Hehe, I wish. I have a nice sampler platter of different incarnations of the technology at different stages along its evolution. If I were to give my collection a theme I would call it a "mechanical calculator timeline".
