Just imagine the rise in airshow attendances if you had the Lightning back flying on the airshow circuit.

I always thought as a kid Thunderbird 1 was a re imagined Lightning. My earliest memory of an aircraft, that got me into aviation when about 8 years old was Shropshire aero club annual airshow, was the Lightning. Came in from the north totally silent, pulled vertical so you could see straight up the jet pipes then the sound caught up.

I saw the Lightning at RAF Finningley air show in the 60s when it was still in service, awesome aircraft and really good to see

Nigel Knott yeah I think I went to an airshow at Finningley and saw one take off and display in the 70's, fantastic aircraft

I don't care who you are the lightning is a beautiful looking playing it has that design aesthetic that Cold War aircraft all have much like the mig-21 it will always have a special place in my heart and on my wall

Hardest thing in the world must be to hear the Avons and feel the unending push see the speed building and think, all I need to do is pull back... but instead I have to close the throttles.

I remember the last Lightning flight into Binbrook long after the base had closed. The Lightning Association had to get special CAA permission for that single flight.
@ArcturanMegadonkey
@ArcturanMegadonkey 7 лет назад
that's interesting, must research it as i never knew
@Bournethorpe
@Bournethorpe 7 лет назад
It was XR724, and you can read all about it at www.lightning.org.uk/story.html I hope the Lightning Association won't mind me pasting just one paragraph here: "On 23 July 1992, XR724 took off from RAF Shawbury and was flown back to Binbrook by Peter Gordon-Johnson, Deputy Chief Test pilot of BAe and the same pilot who had flown '724 into Shawbury on its previous 'final flight'. At our request, RAF Scampton temporarily reinstalled the RHAG (which had been removed) in case of chute failure and provided a mobile Air Traffic unit and fire and ambulance cover, yet another decision by an enlightened RAF base commander which gained the Service enormous public support and approval."

A cross between a MIG -21 and F-105. Was this an attack aircraft, fighter, or interceptor.

Are they just not capable of flying then Paul or is it a lack of airworthiness etc?
@ArcturanMegadonkey
@ArcturanMegadonkey 9 лет назад
3enjoy3 they are flight ready as far as I know although the CAA won't allow due to engine life being 'flight expired' and other reasons, real shame as I'd love to see a lightning in the air. this is the same problem they have with the Vulcan, although it's airframe is perfect the engine flight times are expired in other words jet engines can only be flown for a certain number of hours

They don't make jets like this anymore, used to watch these take off at RAF Binbrook when I was a kid, the last squadrons of Lightning's in RAF service. Shame. The climb rate on these was insane.

2 Rolls Royce Avon turbojets stacked and the only RAF aircraft capable of mach 2.

How much work/money would it take to get this beast flying again?
@ArcturanMegadonkey
@ArcturanMegadonkey 8 лет назад
+John Benton some are as good as in flying condition but the CAA won't allow it without external certification as they're known as 'exotics' and are more complex than propeller aircraft
@johnbenton4488
@johnbenton4488 8 лет назад
I see. Thanks for that. So its an admin thing rather than a technical thing! Same old same old!
@ArcturanMegadonkey
@ArcturanMegadonkey 8 лет назад
+John Benton yeah pretty much so, each technical part needs to be certified airworthy, when you look at how complex a machine this is then it's understandable...but a real shame

Interesting, but why could we not hear the unique sound of Lightning afterburners instead of that monotonous so-called music?
@ArcturanMegadonkey

it's the same at any airshow, the commentator should shut it when things are going on
@johnbenton4488

Did this no end of times on Phantoms at Coningsby. Fully anchored to the deck, of course. The noise was terrible. Early on, before they realised the damage it could do, two engine blokes -a Cpl and an a Ct were killed by exposure to the noise. It crystallised the marrow in their bones! Not nice!
@ArcturanMegadonkey
@ArcturanMegadonkey 8 лет назад
+John Benton geeezus! I never knew that!
@johnbenton4488
@johnbenton4488 8 лет назад
It's not common knowledge, but anyone who is ex-Phantom knows about it.We were limited (by MoD)to two minute's direct exposure per month afterwards.
@ArcturanMegadonkey
@ArcturanMegadonkey 8 лет назад
+John Benton I guess 25,000lbs thrust from a spey engine is probably enough for anyone after some static reheat! cannot imagine what the noise and vibration was like....obviously very bad! thanks again Paul

This Aircraft has Authority. Could see the Pope Organising a Vatican Air force to defend the faith and using a few squadrons of English Lightning's as the Spearhead.
