This video is a fun video I shot this week to help celebrate our Cincinnati Bengals doing so well this season. It is the best season they have had since 1991! On Friday morning at my school we had a “Show Your Stripes” celebration before school in the lobby, and I decided to glaze a few mugs I had with Bengal Tiger stripes! I even was able to present one to David Fulcher, as you will see at the end of the video. (He is a Bengals LEGEND from the 1991 team who now works at our building! Great guy!
The process of glazing these mugs is shown-
The first step (not shown but explained) was to apply three BRUSH coats of glaze to make the stripes
The second step was to apply one coat of Forbes wax to the glazed stripes, but not all the way to the edge. I left a border of a bit over ⅛” to make sure the wax never hit the bare clay.
Step three: When wax is fully dried, I wipe the excess orange brushed glaze away from outside the wax area.
Step four: when fully wiped, I then waxed the feet, then dipped in the black background glaze
Step five: after dipping, I then wiped all wax areas, to make sure there was NO GLAZE still sitting on top of the wax. Failure to remove all glaze from wax can lead to a mess when firing.
The link to the FORBES wax from Cornell is: cornellstudiosupply.com/produ...
NOTE: This should not freeze, and they have on their website they do not recommend shipping in freezing temperatures!
The stoneware in the video is Standard 153, cone 6, and we are using Coyote Glazes cone 6 orange and black. At home I prefer to use Standard B-mix, cone 5-6 no grog
For the great tools I used in the video (including the mudtools shedders, ribs, and kemper mini ribbon tools) check out this link to a live Googledoc I continually update with lots of my favorite tools on Amazon using my associate links! (also some non-amazon suggestions on here!)

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 30 years, the past 20 + have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my RU-vid channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

I have heard you mention in previous videos that we can find a list of your favorite items in the Google Document listed on the video. Can you tell me where and how to find that? Thanks....I'm a rookie !

There is a link to the googledoc in the video description. If you are on a DESKTOP- you will find the video description underneath the video and title. If you are on a MOBILE DEVICE, you will see the title below the video, then look to the right for a little ‘arrow’ which becomes a drop-down menu. Open that drop down menu, and the video description will be visible. In both cases, your video cannot be playing full screen while viewing the video description. Here is the link, but you can always find it in all the video descriptions!! docs.google.com/document/d/1XbYPQjjJnHrQG5xyWGMHZkEcZj5N8VnUAbFZdJRrRmU/edit?usp=sharing

A bit of food coloring in the wax enables you to see where the wax is and where the wax is not
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 2 года назад
Yes- I’ve done that! In this particular case the issue is not being able to tell the difference in the color of the orange glaze and the bisque pot- as they’re so close! :)
