Pardon my ignorance, but why are individual patties made instead of making a single patty that covers the entire ceramic tray, that way everything is covered and safe from drips and you save time?
I apologize for the delay- just saw this. Individual patties were made as it is easier to load the kiln with individual ones, and large ones are harder to store without breaking.
hi!! first of all thank you for your videos, they are very informative and helpful. i have a question, at 9:10 on this video you have used multiple layers on the bowls... i love the outcome, and i wonder if i wanted to have the white piece (only) with the black dots, i should go for marshmallow over licorice? would that give me a result of a pure white and black spots on the whole piece?
It won't be a pure or crisp black and white- but that combo is lovely. If you want true black with white dots, you may consider application of dots of contrast color with a syringe. I have done that before with coyote white, and coyote black dots, and it works well!
I really liked your glazing videos. I'm 63 and getting back into pottery after a 15 year hiatus. It was a late in life start to a hobby but I loved doing it with my late wife. She had taken pottery in college and I got her back into it after some medical stuff as a diversion. I asked her to show me how to throw and it was Katy bar the door after that. I still have the recipes I got from my instructor in Northern Virginia in the early 2000's but would like to expand a little and some of your glazes looked great. I'm looking for sources for recipes (books, subscription etc.) Thanks again for the great videos.
Love your work! Very inspiring! Wondering about the pottery "caddies" for placing pots on during the glaze firing..... Are they just thin slabs of bisqued clay? Thanks! Pat
Yes- Stoneware is what I use for my patties! Here's a link to my patty video! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qGUOMXLlCQE.html or this one which starts partway through a video! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iYiOJRFzyYY.html
Do you have an email? I was able to throw the miniature teapot by just watching your video and I would like to show you pictures to show how impactful you are to the ceramics community. Keep crushing it!
I do... but based on your channel name, I am reluctant to give it out in comments! ;) I'm concerned what kind of email I may receive... give me yours, and I can reach out!! :)
Yes it is possible. But, I would highly recommend testing on a piece before doing it on something you like. That being said, all sorts of glazes have different characteristics. Some may not do well layered. Some may. You just have to get to know your glazes- and perhaps trust the people who do know them! I'm sure some studios may say not to layer- but that may be due to the characteristics of their particular glazes that they use!
Right- the Archie’s series moves when firing over another glaze. (I apply it with a straight line, and the fluxes in it will make it run) If you put it on too thickly, it moves more. The hold time is normal to get the cone 5 temp to the cone 6. With application of less glaze, it may have been better.
@@KaransPotsAndGlass Thanks! As a possible idea for your Robin's Egg glaze issue . . . I have used Robin's Egg over glazes (Amaco Ironstone is amazing under it) and found that only taking it down 1/6 from the top, or less, works well. I really enjoy your videos!
Hi! I need some help. I want to switch to once firing. Do you have any tips how I can limit risks on having damage on my work? I hope to hear from you soon! Thanks
I don’t ever do that with my students due to the shivering nature of glass on clay. It’s a safety concern as sometimes glass can spontaneously shiver and splinter off! As pretty as it is, I just encourage my kids to try other avenues!

Great idea! Saw an amazing bonsai exhibit at the Asheville arboretum this summer and I was inspired!!! Only problem is I don't want to have the work of actually growing them! I can barely keep my existing potted plants alive! LOL!!
Hi Karan...your work is beautiful! I recently glazed a noodle bowl for a gift, and discovered that layering certain glazes can compromise the chemistry of the glazes, and subsequently affect the food safety of the bowl. I was told that I can layer celadons made by amaco without any issues, but am looking for other alternatives to line my bowls with. Any suggestions/advise would be greatly appreciated. Have been looking on line but haven’t found any specific information regarding safe combos. Thank you again!!
Hi Mary- I apologize for the delay, I just noticed this comment! I can't speak to the testing of specific glazes- you could reach out to Cara at Amaco- she is really helpful an knowledgable! I often experiment with food safe glazes together in layering.
Some very nice combos, love that robin’s egg glaze. I think you have a thing with the black ( what does that say about you? Ha ha) what are the patties made of? I thought they were just biscuit fired plates, but not sure, but I do like the way you use them. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧
Thank you Karen for your reply. I was delighted last night to come across your video. Your work is very nice and educational and I love it. It was fun to see how you summarized and put everything together that was perfect. I fire ^5,6 electric and also I do ^10, gas reduction in my garage studio. I love learning from other potters. It’s a real treat thank you very much. I like that Texas two-step I’ve never seen that before. keep up the good work you are a great teacher.😘

Hi Cheryl- I don't believe I used tape in this video? I do have another video on taping... and I have links in the video description to tapes available on Amazon! Electrical or vinly tape, white board tape, pin striping tape. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_p5Rxh-ymtY.html
Hello Karen, and thanks for your wonderful videos!! In your main channel page at the top you have a picture of what looks like coffee Mugs that are orange and yellowish. What glaze combinations did you use and on what clay body? Also what cone were they fired at? Thanks in advance for your reply! Keep up the great work ku'u ipo!! (Ku-u, epO), Hawaiian for sweet heart)
Hello! The glaze you can see in the photo is Coyote Shino- probably a little thick in application, as it often doesn't have the lighter cream spots when I apply. Fired to cone 6 (cone 5 actually with a 25 min hold)
I currently don't sell any - but many of my slab videos do have LINKS in the video description to some of my patterns I have to share on my Googledrive!
Hi Rosie- I typically use cone 5 bmix for my personal stuff. This video was a school clay, which is very forgiving for the kids, it's standard 259- which is a cone 6-10, and has an absorption a bit higher than I really want, so I am planning on making a switch to just a cone 6 clay for classes. The thing I like about that, is it is forgiving for students, and takes refiring to cone 6 multiple times without issues of bloating. I am contemplating switching to Standard 553 - warm buff as a cone 6.
This is the video where I glazed them... and although I don't show the waxing process, I do mention that I had waxed the feet. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Y2dXWwaHs8.html Maybe you are wondering about the areas which stuck?? That isn't because of the wax, that was the glaze application being too heavy, and it ran. Wax doesn't keep glaze from running, it just makes the bottom easier to clean before firing. :)
I’ve been seeing ‘peacock’ glazed bowls and there is a video on glazing one - but I can’t find one on how to make the bowl, please can you do one while we are in quarantine? Thank you 😊
Hi Lynne- sure! Do you have a specific type of bowl you are looking to make? Wheel/handbuilt/slab/coil, etc? Here is a basic playlist of many of my videos which show bowls just in case that may help! But, I can always do a new version! ru-vid.com/group/PLj0pNzEmvM_ozrqx7u9cpfBpvkO2Hae7j
KaransPotsAndGlass Thank you! You did a video on a wheel thrown ‘simple’ bowl which would be perfect. I so appreciate all the quarantine videos you are putting out as I’m not allowed out any further than the garden so potting is keeping me sane!

Just wonderd if the Shino glazes are goods are.. they are so beautiful and the black is stunning does that seal the glaze more.. wondered about your thoughts on that
