C'est et de loin le meilleur Iago que j'ai entendu et de loin !!!!! et aussi le meilleur comédien !! Et, je suis une vieille dame qui a appris l'art lyrique et dramatique dans sa jeunesse
Iago is the evilest caracter ever created i hope play it someday in theater it will be a dream come true, thank you Shakespeare, thank you Verdi, and thank you Terfel for this awsome performance
@@xxsaruman82xx87 To be fair, that's like saying you're not a good baseball player if you don't play as well as Babe Ruth. Obviously, he's no Ruffo, and I'd say Tibbett, who in my opinion was unparalleled in this aria, because of the way he modulated his voice and portrayed Iago as a sly and sinister devil, rather than the typical baritone who, like Terfel, shouts and sells Iago as more of a mafia hood.
@@lsmart This isn’t what a ‘typical baritone’ should sound like. Even C-list singers 50 years ago sounded way better than Terfel. Nikoloz Lagvilava, a baritone singing today, sounds way better than Terfel. Terfel’s technique is deficient.
Indeed he does a splendid job. Terfel is a very worthy bass baritone; the voice is rich and clear, expressive. Now if only we could find a Juicy tenor, as in another Björling.
Evidently Bryn sees this aria differently to Battistini. Is allthis power really necessary? I've heard bryn live several times & greatly admire him, But I prefer Battistini's version. Henry Webb Pontypool Wales
Like Gwyneth Jones (an extraordinary passionate performer), Bryn has a very powerful voice, but Margaret Price had the finest Welsh voice, i.m.o. And Stuart Burrows was superb, e.g Il Mio Tesoro, Geraint Evans fine too
I have been looking for a performance of Nabucco, c'mon bach, you can do it like Tito Gobbi did. Your Iago is nothing less than I would hope for. Come and sing in our Plygain next Christmas if you're not busy x lol
@pudercukurs Because he wouldn't survive the performances. Jago is a very, very heavy sing and not really his repertoire, even though he sings this aria quite well.
Antonio Sommese Non io , tu stai dicendo cito : - Grande voce fine citazione . 🤣
But Bass-Baritones have done it before, for example James Morris was a interpreter of the role. Hans Hotters another prime example, and he was stronger on the bass end of his voice.
Too light! I LOVE Terfel's artistry, but I want real meat here! Give me Ettore or Sherril... The role is one of the true litmus tests of the literature (act II especially).
How about Scarpia in "Tosca" singing IN THE CHURCH NEXT TO THE CHOIR BOYS how is plans to kill Mario, Rape Tosca until she screams and then drops her for a new babe? This evil enough for ye?
I do not understand why Bryn Terfel is so famous. Definitely it is not a bass, neither a bass-baritone (not only he can't reach high notes and his voice sounds very "tenorino"; nothing dark in its color; Kauffmann sounds much more "baritone" than him). The only thing which is good is his way of acting - would be a fantastic actor. It is the same situation as in the case of Luca Pisaroni - a "bass-baritone" with a tenor-like voice!
His lieder recordings are great, but when he sings opera it's just too shouty, blatty and open. As you say, sings in the bass-baritone range but doesn't have half the color of singers such as George London, Hans Hotter etc.
Well, for one, I can easily understand what vowels and consonants he is singing; his diction is literally just as good as any great broadway singers. Second, I can hear the intended pitch very clearly even with variations of color in his voice. Third, his phrasing is immensely musical and full of intelligent and intention. I know that the richer and darker the voice is, the more impressive the singer will sound. But Bryn Terfel’s beauty has never lie in the darkness of the voice. Rather, it’s how crystal clear his voice is compare to other bass-baritones
This piece is too dramatic for him-- he is pushing, and the whole performance sounds like a struggle. It's all rather lethargic. There is also no squillo in his voice, no bite in the sound. That explains why this is performed in a concert setting. He is also either tired or simply getting older? His lower notes were once much stronger as well. One can hear the widening of the vibrato versus his earlier performances of Mozart. I'll refrain from any commentary for his standing up as though he were in a lieder recital.
And yet you've seemingly come back to the video on at least 3 separate ocassions judging by all the comments you've left...seems to be living rent free in your head lol
