Well, bought the Bryton Rider 420 about 6-7 months ago and these are a few issues I have had with the device. Generally speaking it works great, but there's a few things that I will point out. #bryton #rider #brytonrider420
@@scottrider7271 Sorry for any confusion. I meant that I appreciate honest reviews and appreciate yours. I am suspicious of most YT reviews because the reviewer usually received a product from the manufacturer in lieu a positive review.
Yeah I kind of figured that... just wasn't really too sure.... But I know what you mean... it's like RU-vid will pump up everybody's videos if they are certain way... it's almost like politics.
It works fine without the speed sensor you can just use GPS. the only time you need a speed sensor is if you're in tunnels or areas where there's almost no GPS. If you're recording a ride and it loses signal it'll just pick up the signal later and still continue mapping the ride so you can start using it now.
I've had one for 6 months and it's been great, i would definitely recommend it. The memory getting full was also an issue for me, it slowed everything up. First time i did a factory reset and it was back to being fast, since then i instead manually delete all the ride history, this seems to prevent the problem occuring. I'm in Thailand, i use follow track a lot, the breadcrumbs work really well but the navigation instructions are garbage, this may be Thailand or the country roads i go on i don't know. I ignore the directions and just follow the breadcrumbs. I give it 4 out of 5, only 4 because of the 2 problems mentioned
Hello Scott... I got a question on this device charging. Does it have indicator that shows it is fully charge? What i saw here is only battery icon with lighting in it..
Ya I know... Funny you sent this I just pulled my unit off the charger now. Basically what I do is I turn the unit off while I'm charging and it tends to turn on when it's full. it only takes about an hour I find to get a full charge from half so I usually just plug it in before right but yeah I know what you mean you can't tell how full it is until you turn it on
Ah, ok.. thanks for your explanation. I wish that it has an indicator when it is fully charge so can be unplugged at s right time.. But yeah, agree with you, one hour i think is enough to charge this from half to full. Im doing the same. Thanks man, happy riding!
Hey Scott. Good videos. I have one of these being delivered Monday and I have a question I can't seem to find an answer for. Does the unit give you speed or do I need to buy a sensor? Thanks for the help.
No sensor needed. It will give you speed via gps after it locks onto satellites. In the settings make sure to have it update speed quick... I think every second. If you are riding through a tunnel or something like that the speed won't display, but this doesn't effect the ride even if you are recording. It simply starts again when out of tunnel and the recording will continue.
it'll take you a while to get used to how the buttons work but once you got it, you got it. It's simple, long battery, easy to see, highly configurable, you'll love it
Hello again Scott. It's been a few weeks since I got the 420 and let say that I love it! Why would anyone pay more for less? Thanks for the review to help me decide.
You're probably bored of answering the same thing over and over again. I'm really loving the feature of seeing the elevation that's 2 Km ahead. I'm going to several Gran Fondos the coming year and knowing what hills are coming are a boon, specially when you don't know the terrain. It's all mountains so I will always know where to go, because you know, mountain road, only one way to go, so the breadcrumb features will be wasted on me. I am however curious to know if I can record the route, while I'm using follow route? Are those mutually exclusive? Thank you in advance.
I think any saved ride will still be on the gps unit. After you finish just oepn the gps on a PC and find the .gpx file. This .gpx file (maybe another format), can be put into most mapping apps (openstreet, mapmyride, etc)...
i had some issues the activity history is not getting uploaded, I can view from device, but its not there on the app ?!?! anyway, last night just got updated firmware, now we have workout mode!
does the navigation work good? How it gives directions? I'm only looking for a device that gives basic directions and basic stats so i think i might pick this up, only cycle on tarmac
breadcrumb navigation works fine it's just you got to fumble around with it a bit to get the map loaded... it's a little time consuming, but it does work... once you get it going. I only used it a few times cuz I find that I'm always with my phone but I wouldn't buy the unit thinking that that's a really good feature. I'm currently using the Brighton 750 and it's got a lot better mapping thing... and I don't even use it much. I guess if you need maps you probably are in an area you're not used to being in and you're probably with your phone that's what I find...
Apparently you need a premium Strava account to use live segments.I don't have that so I haven't been able to try it. From a quick search on the net it doesn't look like it does...
Well... Took it out for one ride way back... With everything turned up it drained like a smartphone... Took it back. didn't really need the maps so it's just something I wasn't going to use...and with the atrocious battery life it was just not a go for me
Pretty sure it works with most as long as they're non-proprietary. Have you tried the exact sensor and googled it at all? Try googling Bryton 450... That's an older unit but it'll work on the same technology
You're talking about the Bryton 420 right.. if so it's fine but you have to pre-program the route before you start the unit. This can also be done on a phone but it takes a few minutes to get the hang of it and takes time. Once you have a track loaded up it works pretty good you're just sort of following a line you can probably see it one of my old really bad videos, but when you're following the line that's actually pretty good. I mean it's a little simpler than a map but you shouldn't be really looking at the GPS while you're riding anyway. I call it good enough. I thought I'd use the maps, but honestly if I'm in an area where I need a map I have my phone. it's quicker... that's how it falls for me.
Hi Scott, I am in the quest of replacing my broken (simple) bike computer. Does the device offer follow track based on RiderWithGPS routes? What about elevation screen when climbing up mountains?
The 420 has a follow track function but you need to load on the route prior to starting the ride. It is a basic follow line with turn by turn... Works ok. You can load it from the phone app. If you are doing this a secondary screen also starts that will show elevation for the next 2km or so with a line type thing that moves as you move.
@@scottrider7271 Thanks, that would be helpfull. I am used to breadcrumb navigation as I now use my watch for long rides, brevets and so on. What I miss sometimes is a turn-by-turn navigation and I see the device is capable of display street names (cue sheet). Can you check if foreign street names (not latin) are displayed, I live in Greece. Also when climbing uphill, the rest elevation/distance to the top of the hill would be good to have. I saw a video with 420 where the user created a route and added POI/PEAKS and the device showed the distance to next POI. Wasn't very clear what PEAK but there was a short video showing elevation to next PEAK???? I am not quite sure how this works, and haven't find any info on Bryton's site.
It's a pretty basic map thing... Lines basically... I am I. Taiwan and the street names come up in chinese... Lol...or sometimes an English version thereof. If you think you will be using maps alot... Look at the 750 model that just came out... it's a bit cumbersome having to load a map every time that you want a map
@@scottrider7271 Maps not sure... I'd just use basic navigation when going out on pre-planned route longer rides. I saw 750 as well but at that price tag I'd consider Garmin 520+ or 530 as well. But the battery performance is better on 420 as I can see.
Looks to be the same as 420 less the maps doesn't it... I honestly never use the map function. I had the 860 and I just never use the map function on that either so I like I like the 420. that 320 looks like it's the same screen and it's super easy to see no matter what and you can leave it on all the time and the battery life is great. What's the difference in price between the 420 and 320?
@@scottrider7271 Price difference is around 20usd. I just wondered if the workout mode in 420 is really useful when I don't have a power meter at the moment.
@@scottrider7271 I too think that's not much of a price difference. I just think Bryton might position the 320 as an entry level product and will not provide as many feature updates as the mid-level 420 which the sponsored riders are using. Although both 320 and 420 already have the features I would ever needed. I live in Hong Kong.😉
How about mobile data usage of this bike GPS? I’m kind of surprised to use up 4-6Gb for a 100-130km ride…or I may have some wrong setting in my unit or phone (using this here in China)
Definitely want to check your settings because it's not going to pull more data than actually just quick kilobytes for location. I used 23 megabytes last month on the Brighton 750... If you use a follow track function then you don't even need to be connected to the phone you just need to upload the map
Hi Scott, with incoming call notifications enabled when my Android Samsung phone rings I only get a pop-up on 420 with PHONE label, no contact name or caller ID. After a missing phone call I get a missed call notification with contact name. Permissions to contacts and phone are given. Have you got this issue as well? Android phone...
I enabled the call option once I think... Then I decided not to use it. I just found that the notifications are too small. Also, I check my phone quite a bit so I'm not the guy to ask... sorry man... If you find a solution just reply maybe it can help other people.
@@omrothmn i have speed sensors but the problem is that on my trainer, you have to remove the rear wheel. it has a fly wheel and no place to put the speed sensor
Never do the mountain biking here because ...well ...off-road is jungle... It uses the osm (open street maps) so you'll have to check maybe with other people who have done mountain biking or other GPS that use the osm
@@scottrider7271 🤭🤭literally did that. Well google translate obviously. Now everything is in order. So far quite good device for the price tag. Only sometimes the recording uploaded fast. Sometimes not
@@scottrider7271 yep. And how do i sync to my strava? It became strava athlete. When im not recording with strava, it does not recorded to my strava profile. Seems like the bryton has its own profile
I just synced to my Strava app (free acct) from the settings in the bryton app... You need to be connected to the bryton with the phone to sync. You can force the sync by pressing the brighten icon in the app. I've only used the free Strava so I'm not sure if it's different than the others
Thanks for the helpful review. I have an old Garmin Edge that stopped working and thinking of getting this. I read the display is glossy and can have reflections, have you found that to be a problem as far ad readability?
using the 420 now... can read it easily anytime... not an issue as far as i am concerned. the display on the 420 is not set back like the other models.
