Plugging some oil galleries up which are not now used,
Making temporary nylon bearings to test fit the crank so I can judge the next steps.

Yeah…… I really enjoyed these videos. Nice when a plan comes together with good results. Cheers

Thanks for following, this might be a bit longer term project than first envisaged, it's kind of 'evolving'

Great idea with the nylon bearings, I'm sure I'll be borrowing that idea in the future. I was hoping I might have BSA service sheets for A group but I only have M,B and some D. Really appreciate you taking the time to post videos. Best wishes, Dean in Oxfordshire.

Google Dutch BSA service sheets. I do have an original comb bound book version.

@@AGEngineering I inherited mine from my Grandad. They still have his oily fingerprints all over them! They are the comb bound versions. Also a Triumph 650 twin manual from when he had his Trophy TR6.

That's great, thanks for watching! We get to the real issue with centering a crank, not this namby pamby 30 thou stuff, 5/16" of an inch! Regards, Ade

Great stuff. A good trial assembly with the dummy bearings. You really know your subject, and what's more you can talk about it eloquently too. If I was talking about somuething, even things I know about, I'd be all uhms and ahs. You aren't and that's s real skill.

Just discovered your conversation series, and I am thoroughly enjoying watching them. But as an ex mechanic, I've been wondering how you'll set the correct end float on the timing side. Previously there was a top hat bush, but now there is only the casing with bush locators. Will you use a shortened top hat bush to sit on the circlip, or shims... I guess I'll have to watch the rest to find out. Great work so far, and nice seeing this done from an engineering perspective 👍

I liked the thread decision M7=1 M8=1.25 @ 75% depth of thread, very clever. And a practice run with plastic bearing smart move. Excellent show so far Ade nothing done twice, I hate doing things twice.

Hey Ade, really liking this series. One thought from a guy who knows nothing about these engines... what's wrong with the long stroke crank? Obviously, you show that as you have it mocked up, there's a bunch of end play, but spacers would fit that How much more stroke is this crank? Will the big ends of the rods fit inside the cases? And, will this require notches in the bottom of the cylinders? The guys building Harley Ironheads used to commonly put spacers under the barrels to allow some big increases in stroke - and those stroked engines really picked up performance over stock displacement ones with comparable heads and cam timing - makes me curious if you could build a big inch BSA that would make a fair bit more torque than standard.

Hi, yes my initial thoughts were to spacer it, however the timing side needed to be in line for the gears and oil pump drive, so if it went to the timing side, the drive side is only half in the bearing 😢. The spacer needed to be in the centre of the crank to move both shafts outward.... Next episode 😕

Did you determine that a A65 crank is very different from what you need?
@AGEngineering
@AGEngineering 4 года назад
Apparently A10 cranks can fit into A65 cases to increase the stroke, not sure about the other way round, probably not done because it isn't the 'right' way to go. Main journal size is also 1.5" (38mm)so it would need reducing to 30mm, possibly too much effect on strength?

I was unaware of that there even was a long stroke crank in these.Where and why were they even used?

1947 to 51 A7 with the gearbox that bolted to the back of the crankcases, this is also the version that had the white metal timing side bush that the bolt on plate service tool with reamer was made for. Thanks for the comments, Ade
