BSR C123R Record Changer Video #1- Stuck Platter

In order to restore this player back to good operation, I have to remove the platter to access parts that need attention. The problem is that this platter stuck tight but is made entirely of plastic and could be easily ruined by heat or force. I take a cautious approach to avoid damaging something and inadvertently wrecking the player.

Thank you for sharing this! After watching this a couple times I was able to get my grandfather's old Montgomery Ward combo record/cassette /8track up and spinning smooth again. So happy I can do it myself in the future if need be, as opposed to taking it to a service shop over an hour away. Folks rarely service these models anymore. Thanks so much again!

I've got 16 rpm records but looking at them you'd think they were 45's as they have the large hole and are 7". I broke the old BSR platter free on the one I picked up by taking an old soldering iron and applying heat by sticking the tip down into the spindle's hole after pulling the spindle out of course. Got rid of all the old hardened grease using lacquer thinner and just re-lubed everything that needed lubrication with some Singer sewing machine oil used sparingly. My BSR is part of an old 1968 "The Fisher 125" system. Has a metal platter. Idler wheel is still flexible. Has 4 speeds and uses a Pickering V-15 moving magnet cartridge. Someone had put the singles spindle on it at some point, but I bought a changer spindle and replaced it with it. Bought two NOS Pickering styli for it, one for modern microgroove albums and a wider one for 78's, adjusted the screw under the tone arm so it would drop the needle in the proper spot and it's worked great ever since. :)

The center spindle is designed to be removed by pulling up on it and a soldering iron can be placed where the spindle has been. That should be enough to free up the platter.

Anything is better than taking a propane gas torch to it like he did at 11:00.

I believe those 16 speed records were for "Piped In" music in the 50's and 60's.

I had one of these in my shop and had trouble removing the platter and came here and found out that if you pull up on it quite hard and spin in counter clockwise after removing the C clip it spins right off..it is finely threaded on it appears.

I have a BSR record changer that looks very much like this model. At least I know what NOT to do to it to get it working again! I better go to radiotvphononut's site to see how to do it right.

I have one possible solution on how to remove the seized spindle: apply a couple of drops of 3-in-1 oil between the spindle and spindle hole. Place a cork turntable mat over the platter in order to protect the platter from a heat source (e.g. heat gun). As you apply heat to the spindle using the heat gun, hold the heat gun sideways and slowly move it up and down. Hopefully you can remove the spindle that way (do a little twisting left and right as you pull the spindle out). Once done, you can now drop a soldering iron down the spindle hole to free up the seized platter (let it sit for approx 4-5 mins while the heat softens and melts the old dried grease)

@Jordan Pier : how to get the gear back on the spindle enough so I can get the retention clip back on? I got it clean and lightly oiled(with a tiny bit of tri-flow). Just don't know how to get the gear on the spindle far enough for the clip to snap on

Before re-installing the deck into the wood base you are using, simply pull a little lever under the cycle cam gear assembly where the mini-roller is slightly towards you and it should align with the underside track of the cycle cam gear

I just got one of these with no base, do you happen to know how the Ac Power connects and to which color wire? Thank you!

That split in the ring looks like it's for that notch to sit in on the changer spindle so the spindle itself doesn't turn.

400 grit sandpaper the shaft...i wonder if that was rust, why the platter was jammed ?? could it have gotten wet at one point.

Some Wd40 and slight pressure from below and a lite tap on the spindle with rubber mallet the shock will break it free

Ronsonol lighter fluid did the trick for me to get the platter off.

These BSR TT from early 70s on were shocking on rumble, S/N 35 dB not good, The LP120 DD TT has a noisy motor known for cogging, vinyl rescue channel hated his for that, I own a 1200 MK4, the transformer in that vibrates, causing hum to be heard between tracks, much lower level than what a BSR does

7:56 He uses WD40 instead of a proper deoxit contact cleaner whenever he gets the chance. But on the one thing WD40 does a half way decent job; softening up gooey and dried up grease, he does not use it but pours alcohol on half of the platter which runs the risk of damaging rubber and plastic. Fortunately for the owner of this record player the alcohol had evaporated by the time he put the torch to the platter at 10:50

Most old school folks use WD-40 for contact cleaning and contrary to popular belief it works just fine and is a lot less expensive than de-oxit. I've used both as well as CRC contact cleaner and they all do a fine job of cleaning contact points. The only advantage deoxit has is leaving a film behind on the contacts to help keep them from corroding again in the future, but if you don't mind cleaning them again in the future either of the other ones are perfectly fine to use. He just needs to pull out the changer spindle and apply heat down inside the spindle hole with an old soldering iron for a few seconds.

So... I guess we'll never know what happened to the other turntable, the one with one channel busted... ... And by the way, what happened to the signal generator? We'll never know...

Buy an Ultrasonic Cleaner; and through the parts all in. Use Simply Green.
