It’s a happy day when a compressor gets resurrected with new life! I bought this BSS-DPR 402 VCA styled compressor on eBay a few years ago for cheap because it wasn’t working and I’ve finally nursed it back to full health. Robin Wienands was a big help in re-caping this beast - we replaced 10 electrolytic capacitors in the power section to cure the terrible distortion this unit was outputting. Then I waited patiently for 3 months for a potentiometer and 2 indicator bulbs that were delivered from the U.K. Apparently 1980’s electronic parts are plentiful on that side of the water.
Hear this sample of Garrit Tillman playing a groove for a Gold Coast Strummer song that was recorded at Pique Recording recently 🔥 Heavy compression is just one of its features - there’s also narrow and wide band de-essing, peak limiting and a few different side chain dependent compression/expansion options. It’s no wonder that Waves Audio has a plug-in version of this classic.
I’m stoked to put this into the audio path for future recordings. I think it would fit nicely as a gentle drum overhead compressor. My favorite sound here is at the very end of this clip, using a fast attack and lower ratio. It cradles the snare pleasantly, pushing it to the front of the soundstage without the cymbals becoming overly aggressive like during the heavy pumping parts heard on the early part of this sample. I’m gonna keep exploring 🤠 🎙

I used to have one back in the days when I did my music studies at the Rockacademy. Got it also as a bargain on Ebay, because I was constantly trading 2nd hand music hardware in those days. Excellent hardware compressor with multiple ways to use;... I remember using it to master a couple of other artist's recordings, because VST-plugins back then where far from as good as they are nowadays.

Would you say this is better then a ART PRO VLA for mixbus glue purposes only?

Hello Jack and thanks for the video. Do you think this would be nice as a first compressor to purchase? I'm after versatility, as in soft and invisible compression in jazz music and more forward push in songwriter stuff. any help would be appreciated, thanks!

That's a great demo. Have you tried doing an a/b test with the waves plugin? I'm asking because I use it often on my mix and I was wondering if the hardware unit was even better than the digital counterpart.

Hi Antonio, thanks for watching. I do have the waves plugin and use it regularly. I haven't done a side by side comparison but I can confidently say that the hardware has more mojo. It can go both more extreme and more subtle, and has a musical tonal quality to it. That being said...I pretty much stay in the box after tracking and still use the plugin regularly. I use the hardware on the front end with room mics or overheads. It's nice to have around and it's not going anywhere! I hope that helps, good luck! -James Meder

Hi James. Just picked one up myself. Don't suppose you have any further details of the cap replacement and stuff? Would like to do the same to mine. Many thanks

Hi Joe, I only did the recap because I could audibly hear the distortion from the unit and didn't think it was supposed to sound that way. My tech friend Robin helped me use an oscilloscope to see a square wave being produced so we moved forward with the recapping. I ended up replacing 10 caps, though we heard (and saw on the oscilloscope) a big difference after replacing the 2 large caps (1000uF 40v). The issue was probably fixed after those 2...but I did some others while I was at it. The other 8 electrolytic caps I replaced were closeby on the PCB to these 2 and their values are: 100uF 25v x4 and 22uF 63v x4. Luckily I held on to the old caps. Good luck! - James Meder

@@JamesMeder I get distortion if the attack and release are too low (meaning short time). I wonder if that means I got to do some servicing. It probably shouldnt distort regardless of the settings.

@@ruthlesscutthroat4030 Interesting, I don't think mine does that. You can see that it works well at the fastest attack setting. When mine was broken, I heard distortion on the whole signal - didn't matter the settings. If you want a tech to check it out, Robin Wienands does great work for me. You can reach him at robinmw@gmail.com Good luck!
