They put EVERYTHING in this MV that they (as IDOLS) had been ridiculed for, and stereotyped as in the past. Like people would always stereotype and criticize by saying their MVs were too brightly colored, too edited, too many special effects, too much green screen, etc. So they threw all this back at em while singing the famous IDOL line: "You can't stop me loving myself!!!!!" 😁💜
Yeah it's everywhere lol, RM been criticized for playing with filter, Suga been criticized for been too pale like snow white (he wear snow white in this MV), J-Hope was judged for been too thin like bugs bunny (hense his outfit&what you described as car-dealer inflatable thing). I'm sure there is more but funniest thing is this MV was a huge success (now have over billion view) and showed hater they did everything they hated and still won 🤣

I was trying to describe some of their reasoning without getting too deep into the real personal attacks but you did a good job of explaining it without validating the hate they received. And also describing how this vid is a prime example of BTS building raging success (not just in spite of, but) off the back of unnecessary hate. 💜 They use it as fuel and that's inspirational.
@@alis6259 yeah even more amazingly is they don't just shut all criticism out, when they do think criticism is actually valid they do make the change when it fits (like the criticism of not promoting Korean culture enough) which is obvious in this MV and later works they did.

This song goes so hard live. They dance so hard and it goes on for several more choruses. But BTS and ARMY are exhausted at the end. It's my favorite concert song. Nothing like 50,000+ people singing "You can't stop me loving myself."!!!!!

You can watch it in your own time... But one of the first things I obsessed about as new army was watching every live performance of this. Because it hits so hard. There's even a fan-made 8D concert version of this that I couldn't get over at the time, because I couldn't stop feeling heartbroken over the fact that I've never heard this song in a concert. The mix that they use for the live is crazy good!
There's a couple of explanation videos for this that are pretty helpful. I'm just going to add one thought which I have not seen anybody else say so far. You know how the scene starts out with Africa? And we are told by one of the explanation videos that the cloth used for the suits is African? And everything else seems to be Asian, especially with references to Buddhism? Well going back centuries, the old silk and spice trade routes, which had branches both over land and at sea skirting the continents, started in Africa and ended in Asia over by Korea (known in those times as Goryeo, then as Joseon). Money, goods, ideas, and culture, including music, flowed bidirectionally. That is early globalization, early internationalization. And I think that's kind of why that setup is there. In other words, we are all connected going back thousands of years. Just my personal opinion.

There's an explanation video for this by the channel DKDKTV. They do a lot of explanation videos that are really good, because they answer that question of "What am I looking at?" They explain the history and cultural references in the video that only a Korean would understand. They break it down really well, so it's not too difficult to understand but there's still a hell of a lot of stuff packed into an MV.
