I don’t listen to kpop either, only BTS as well. I got into BTS because of dynamite. And it’s not because dynamite is their best song or anything, but it’s the only song I Heard on the radio from them otherwise I wouldn’t have even discovered them. So in that sense, dynamite did it’s job. I ended up diving into their music, and especially love their B sides, the songs that mainstream radio will probably never play and are missing out on. But back to kpop, the only other group I’ve been listening to is new jeans. They do have some good songs I must say, where it has melody and not using random gibberish words

K-pop fans desperately want K-pop to stop growing. They prefer to stay within the realm of the craziness, bubblegum pop, and nonsensical lyrics kind of songs. By watching BTS, who keep evolving and experimenting with new sounds, they believe that BTS's achievements arise not from their crave of creation, but from their greediness. BTS's uniqueness has led to people hating on them. This proves that when you try to grow beyond the norm, there are those who will try to bring you down.

However the frog in the well is more akin to the Big fish an a small pond. The fish and the frog see themselves as the big thing yet are not really and need to get out of their small pond/well in order to see how small they are and how big the world is. While the crabs in the bucket don't care for each other they are only out for themselves so instead of helping each other out of the bucket they bascially pull each other back down and none of them escape so the crab catcher gets to eat them all.

I wouldn't call all of kpop nonsensical. There are great korean artists who shouldn't be stereotyped because of weird quirky title tracks in kpop. There are excellent b sides lyrics production and composition in kpop - take it from a classical musician of 13 years. Just like bts music shouldn't be stereotyped as mainstream just because of dynamite or butter. I think bts are one of the greatest artists in the world, to make it clear. But kpop shouldn't be put down to promote bts.

There are so many issues with this podcast. First of all they completely ignored talking about any of BTS Korean songs as a group and as soloists. They made it seem like BTS transitioned to only making fully English songs when in reality they've released a lot more Korean songs since 2020 as opposed to English. And out of the 7 members only Jungkook had a fully English album and that's the only solo album they discussed completely ignoring the other member's albums that were in Korean. BTS as a group and as soloists shouldn't have to limit themselves to the type of music they want to make and should be able to make music in any language they want. Also acting like NewJeans started the trend of combining Korean and English was odd to me. Kpop songs have been doing this for decades, it didn't start with NewJeans. Also all this bs about BTS losing their popularity in South Korea after the release of their English songs. I don't know what metric they are using but didn't Dynamite and Butter (2 fully English songs) win several song of the year awards in South Korea? Also winning Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for Proof- an anthology album and having a successful sold out concert in Busan in 2022. Then they had to be cowards and not mention their names because they didn't want fans hating on them. Well geez maybe if you didn't say dumb crap fans wouldn't feel the need to defend to BTS in such a strong way. If you're going to throw out the negativity don't be shocked when the same negativity hits you back in the face. PS- Mic Drop is still a bop

I listened to this shortly after it dropped. I listened another time and took notes. It honestly made me so upset I had to visit the Magic Shop afterward. 💜 I exchanged my anger for a different version of Jungkook’s album! Perhaps they didn’t like all the songs on his album. Discuss that and tell us why. A few songs stood out to you? Explain. (That would have been much more productive.) Whether you loved Golden or hated it, some things should be acknowledged: 1- The US does not own the English language. 2- It wasn’t an “attempt”- it was a very successful accomplishment 3- JK put out a 100% English album when he is not fluent in English. His pronunciation and enunciation is amazing. 4- He wanted to become a global pop star. English is looked at as a global language. So it makes sense that he would have an album in English to reach more ARMY as well as the GP. 5- Also, the album and singles have been incredibly successful. Discuss that. Talk about how there are no boundaries in music. (You started to but..) 6-Talk about how music itself is an international language. And regarding the “bridge too far” English Trilogy. I believe far more new fans were reached than left the fandom due to those songs. I was a new fan in 2021. I saw Dynamite, PTD, and my third MV was Black Swan. That is when I went down to the ocean floor with them and ended up in the BTS rabbit hole.

Brilliant points you made about why Golden should have been discussed by them and how they could explore that the xenophobia of the industry maintains that you have sing in English to get the "mainstream" success in spite of massive actual fan engagement in other languages. They could explore the changes that BB made after Jimin got no 1 with a song not in English (it had an English version but the sales and streams were primarily for the Korean version). That would have been an amazing conversation.

Not sure how the podcaster from New York, which started as a Dutch colony, missed the language diversity. Agreeing with you about it makes sense for any pop star to try songs in English to reach the over 67 nations around the world where English is one of the official spoken languages. Like, Nigeria or Australia or Canada. Jungkook tried to learn some Portuguese too when he was touring in South America so he's trying to reach out in so many ways. Anyway, I agree with you and you made good points.

I had my attention drawn by Dynamite in 2020, and though I enjoyed it a lot, it wasn't the song that made me decide to stick around. Those were Fire, So What, and Black Swan. I can definitely assert that Dynamite, Butter and PTD drew in a huge number of new fans; when I subscribed to BangtanTV at the end of 2020, there were about 45M subscribers. By July of 2021...~7 months later... 55M subscribers. By June of 2022, there were 70M. And by Nov. of last year, there were 77M. (I took screenshots.) Things have slowed down during the solo era and the enlistment, and we're currently at 77.6M, but I expect that will soar again come 2025. Weverse subs have done something similar; it's over 25M users there now, and when I joined up they had just about reached 10M...I remember the posts by admin celebrating both the 10M and the 20M marks. So, yeah- Dynamite, Butter and PtoD served a purpose, drawing the attention of people who had not previously been interested in BTS and K-pop. And they served their other purpose very well, too, encouraging and cheering people during some incredibly difficult times. I'll always prefer the Korean songs, but I'll also always have a very soft spot for Dynamite, because without it I probably wouldn't have got to know BTS.

The difference between Backstreet Boys and N'Sync is a good example (same manager & producer/songwriter in their hype phase). BTS were shocked when their English tracks blew up. They were just trying to lift their own and others' spirits during the pandemic. Saying they did it as a craven money grab is such backwards logic. The songs were massively successful so it's labeled a cash grab retroactively. If the songs didn't do as well as they did, they would have said they were just failed attempts as a genre, not cash grabs. Your point that the guest fetishizes KPop and doesn't like BTS because they got too big is spot on. She says multiple things that are straight up racist, showing her true colors. This kind of weird rejection of popularity has been the norm for niche music genres. When an artist or group in a very niche sector manages to cross over into the mainstream, the "fans" always accuse them of selling out and going commercial. I've seen it so many times, from Bob Dylan going electric to the present with BTS and K-pop. Setting aside the fact that Kpoppers never cottoned to BTS' success in the first place, sour grapes are a direct result, imo, of "their" music not being "special" anymore. There is so much talent in kpop that shouldn't be belittled and overlooked just to promote BTS. They can both be great. Streams do not make one great. BTS were great at their debut, with good hiphop production and excellent, hard-hitting lyrics, but they got very very few streams.

@ajlee2168 Ok I get what bora means now ig. I just don't think it is right to take jabs at kpop when kpop music is objectively far superior to western music which gets billions of streams. Leaving BTS completely aside and simply comparing kpop and western music, kpop has far more complex chords (augmented, diminished, sus, 7ths, 13ths), interesting chords progressions which actually fit the emotion being described, a greater variety of melodies and instruments. Kpop songs have 10-13 melodies on average when western music has far less. A lot more love and thought is put into the production of kpop songs, which have 200 or so tracks in the mix compared to the 40-50 max in western pop. The songs often may have meaningless lyrics, but aren't most western pop songs about break ups, sex, and exes or just general teenage angst? And I think BTS is the best not just in kpop but in the entire music industry for the content of their music and artistry. I say this as ARMY who has only listened to BTS and classical music in the last week lol.

@@machinelearner108 i see your perspective, kpop songs have the potential to be more interesting, but i wouldn't say it's "objectively" superior. i appreciate when a song is more complex and tries something unconventional. there are many western songs that are very simple, but that, depending on your mood, might actually sound more pleasing than a "complex" piece, therefore i cant say one is objectively better than the other, it's still your subjective taste. it's actually the opposite for me, kpop has great ideas, but the final product will often sound messy and not enjoyable, i just keep thinking about the wasted potential. so while i appreciate trying more, it backfires for a lot of kpop songs imo. for the lyrics, pop songs in any language have some random or superficial lyrics. but since kpop isn't exclusively comparable to western pop, but can be any genre, it's definitely overwhelmingly filled with nonsense lyrics. im a big rap fan and kpop rap greatly injures my heart at times lol. western rap parts in pop songs can be meaningless, but at least they're pleasant to listen to, have good flow, revolve about a topic or are just adding to the general vibe, whereas kpop rap is 90% gibberish, repeating trendy words, no interesting flow, rhythm or instrumentals to support it, and are generally just filler parts. basic western songs might focus on sex, or love and heartbreak, but the lyrics, tho unimpressive, stay on topic or will make a few interesting word plays if you're lucky. whereas kpop generally keeps it very vague, to the point where all the emotions are felt through the instrumental, and none (or very few) are delivered through lyrics or vocal delivery. actually, a lot of kpop songs have fantastic instrumentals, but when listening to the actual song, its mostly ruined for me. i cant appreciate a great beat if they stumble over their words or just yell out 2 words repeatedly. dont get me wrong tho, im not defending western songs, my go-to songs all focus on meaning and have great lyricism, but observing kpop over the years and also being unwillingly aware of western hits, id have to say its an advantage that im not fluent in korean, bc bad kpop lyrics are way more frustrating to me than bad western lyrics.

Man hearing her explaination of why BTS have 'changed' or are 'sell outs' makes me so glad that I fell back in love with BTS about a year ago. I first became an ARMY at the end of 2015 and I was in DEEP, I watched everything listened to everything. I remember so excited when Blood, Sweat and Tears got the most views in 24 hours for a kpop MV which was 6 million views which is crazy to think about now. But after the DNA MV which wasn't so story or theory based I was a bit disappointed (still loved all the songs though) and from then on I stopped watching videos of them and only checked in on occasion to listen to their latest album and watch any major performances. I still listened to and liked a lot of the music but didn't listen to the albums more than a few times, then the english songs released. I liked the songs but for my then distant fan ears it felt like a 'change' and a 'sell out'. again I still liked the songs but I had a preconcieved idea of what they 'had become' despite knowing how dynamic they are and very much different from kpop they always have been. I hadn't even listened to a single song on BE and PROOF (new song ofc). The last year one of my flatmtes was listening to Run BTS from Proof and when I asked what song it was she showed me the dance video and holy shit I just thought to myself "that's BTS, the BTS I remember" and it was like a switch flipped and I instantly realised that I had been missing out MAJORLY. It has been a blessing and a curse to know that I missed out on so much but I've really enjoyed catching up on all the songs and content I've missed out on, I am also now a proud owner of Proof and my many other albums that had been buried at the bottom of my wardrobe for way too long.

I do like most of their bubble gum pop songs but I also understand all those "sell out" accusations (so I do have a love-hate relationship with PTD). 2021 was a turning point for me because I don't like how corporate the company has become since Big Hit Entertainment became Hybe. And yes, I do understand that there is a certain pressure for them to establish themselves as part of the "Big 4" in Kpop - but was it really necessary to work with S. Braun? That was definitely a downgrade in the ethics department & therefore also in the image department. And it's not just about T. Swift and all the smaller artists who say that he mistreated them, it's also the mental health of Justin Bieber himself who is the best example of why we shouldn't make (underage) teenagers famous - for their own good. Kpop idols are lucky that they are still expected to graduate from high school, that they are usually in a group and that it's a big taboo for them to touch illegal drugs. Whenever there are signs that some of the BTS members have an unhealthy relationship with food, alcohol or tobacco, it worries me a lot. But I also appreciate how open they sometimes are with it and how they reflect on some of their habits (I have very mixed feelings about Jungkook's drunk livestreams, lol). What I was trying to say: There are a lot of things surrounding BTS at this point that stress me out in a bad way (not comparable to ticket sale hunger games). However, all my attempts to unstan them failed miserably and the best thing I can do is to just focus on the aspects of their output that bring me joy & wisdom 😊

When kpop "journalists" correlate everything in kpop back to BigBang (or any other group, but we do see it a lot with BB interestingly) you just know that was their group and they literally know nothing more and everything else is just an enormous amount of nostalgia and butthurt about how they self-destroyed and how in fact it was BTS that ended up making it. She's not an "idol expert", she's not even a kpopie, she's just a random BB stan. I would be sad if I was a BB stan too, but she has to let it go... There's no fcking way, as a Latina, Despacito without Justin made all the sense in the world, Fonsi + Daddy Yankee worked like peanut butter and chocolate, the song was already a huge hit without Bieber, and I have no idea why he was added to the song for a remix, THAT was most definitely JUST a business decision and most definitely awkward. to be fair getting Justin on the song (regardless if it was a business decision or Justin wanted to/fonsy & daddy yankee wanted him on it) gave the push it needed to get a #1 on the hot100 it otherwise would have never reached (thats speculation from me ofc i have no way of knowing but thats the way it seemed at least) and i agree that it was a very successful song on its own without JB. That situation is similar to bts hopping on the savage love remix and getting another #1 on the hot100 for themselves, Jason Derulo and the giy who made the beat (im blanking on his name rn) which Jason Derulo finally admitted to recently giving BTS their flowers after acting like a dummy back in 2020. at least he saw the light eventually lol

When they sing in English, they are no longer true to their roots😅. The problem with the guest is that her favourite all time group is not the biggest. Some people just want their 15 seconds of fame (and I mean seconds, because more is not happening 😂) by trying to pull down others who do have and will keep their fame for decades. BTS will be around for so much longer than his podcast career and her “expert kpop fame” combined. And true ARMIES will stay by their sides. Even if they make some songs that might not be to your taste, you can still stay a fan and listen to their other music. Just like you said, you don’t have to like and listen to everything. And I am willing to bet that both of them would not recognize all BTS songs. If you would make them listen to one of the B-sides of BTS that is a little more k-pop or distinctly more A-pop without letting them know that it is BTS, they would say it just a good k-pop or a-pop song. Between the two extreme views, lies somewhere the truth. I doubt people will agree and back up claims that kpop was mainstream, but it did exist in the west irregardless if you and any regular person off the street knew. Before talent is broken into the mainstream, they all start with with a small-medium underground fandom that slowly grows. Only I n d stry plants break overnight. If you look at Lana, for example or even The XX there were people in the in at a time before the rest of the population was introduced. You can say this applied to Big Bang and SM groups, as there are literal footage of concert packed full in Europe and North America. So as a BTS fan, to deny the growing popularity of kpop is just pure bias and deceit. Apart from the fact that Kcon in LA has existed for 2 decades if not more; the fact that there is a korean cable in Cali airing kdramas and korean content as far as the 90's. And not to mention the rise of interest in kdramas and breakouts into west like Parasite and Squid Game means of Kdramas have broken into and got acknowledged by the west it was only a matter of time before kpop would breakout too, irregardless if that was gonna be BTS or some other group. But the biggest proof that you're wrong? The fine brothers reaction channel was fairly known in the yt community if you consumed yters content - this was the early 2010's, was one of the up and coming biggest yter channels among all other famous ones; and videos were getting up to a mil views, 6 digits in the minimum. And they had a segment where people reacted to multiple kpop videos - quite a few vids done. These videos amassed millions of views and introduced many western people to kpop before the introduction of BTS. In fact, Big Bang's Fantastic Baby was going viral withing the kpop community and saw a spike in views thanks to this introduction. Not to mention, as a long time yt user I can recall you from memory that around 2011-2009 (idr) one of SNSD's songs made it to the top of the front page of yt - which means it was advertised as trending video. The kpop I n d stry put in it's roots for the eventual break out of kpop into west - BTS misguided fanatics don't understand that. That even without BST, kpop would've become a conversation in the west as PSY already broke once (albeit a one hit wonder). It's not a perspective of you failed, but a perspective of Korea was getting one step closer and closer as they were cracking the code on how to break. It's why Blackpink is massively big and recognized too - and it's not bc of BTS paving the way, but bc Blackpink was growing and spreading alongside BTS parallel to their growth. You have to understand that at around 2013 there was so many groups, medias introducing kpop were created and growing in views and visibility all parallel to each other. That's why Kpop's break was eminent - bc the way the music experience in kpop is programmed was to maximize getting fans and sparking intrigue, bc kpop is very addictive in every way and format. So to say that even BTS stumbled on this global visibility is ignorance and lack of understanding the marketing strategies employed. BigHit literally flew out to every small Kcon kpop type event they could find in random countries most of the world doesn't pay attention - just like they did this with Britney Spears in Asia afaik, and that's how she became global - because they advertised her as global rather than just for the western market bubble.

I want to add that there is no point in sh***ing on "boybands", "KPop" or "pop music" in general. It's an entertaining and group-forming exercise to argue about what "good music" and "real artists" are like. But at the end of the day it's about artists finding their audience based on taste, timing and sometimes politics as well. As a European who LOVES the Eurovision Song Contest I probably have a very different perspective on that whole "singing in English to appeal to the masses" thing (than many Americans who live in their US-only bubble) because on the one hand it's just legit because it can work extremely well (ABBA) and on the other hand there is an increasing amount of people who appreciate it if you sing in your native language because it's more authentic and brings in more variety. Well, you can do both. That's why I loved the Coldplay collab so much. It brought Korean lyrics to Western mainstream radio listeners. And that's a really nice way to use your English native speaker mainstream star privileges 😊

Yes, that's true, my universe was ironic. But I think bts's engish songs work better in this language because they are mainstream pop songs. My universe is a rock song and rock genre is universal and sounds amazing in any language. But hardcore pop sound seems unfortunately limited to english speaking countries. The vibes of this songs work better in English I think. But still though their performances bts can make this songs sound uniquely their. No one can present them like they do, not even original artists who come with this type of songs and that's one thing many often forget about. Bts lookes unique and cool in every style that they are trying. I think that's because they enjoy this different styles themselves and that's the reason of their passion and enjoyment in every performance.

I remember this podcast I never listened to it, but I heard clips. I was so mad. Thanks for talking about it. BTS will never be held back by all these fucking limits, expectations and boundaries. BTS has always been real musicians with a desire to grow artistically and the "kpop box" has never stopped them and will never stop them. The 2 main things connecting BTS to K-pop are the fact that they're korean and debuted from a korean entertainment company like other K-pop groups. But BTS sound has never been defined by K-pop. I also hope in the near future BTS' music will be classified properly into the genres it deserves to be in on all streaming platforms and not just kpop because its just ridiculous that some BTS' english songs are under kpop playlists and not under playlists that they deserve to be in Even Seven was nominated as best kpop song for billboard music awards I just hope when BTS comes back they won't squeeze them into those kpop categories on award shows and rob them of main categories.. My one desire is bts will keep growing and growing and if you don't like it, stay on your fucking lane, not releasing unnecessary podcasts that are of no use, cause at the end of the day, how did that podcast help anybody, even kpop fans?.. on a serious note if you learnt something useful from that podcast I really want to know. BTS will sing in any language they like, promote in any country they like, create in any genre they like! Thanks Boracity. By the way, MAKE IT RIGHT?? I loved it the first day I heard it, its one of my favourite songs ever, even beyond BTS' discography...This just shows how inclusive music-wise BTS is I love your channel I hope it keeps growing and reaches the right audience Once again, I love this channel Boracity, well done great video🤌🙌💜

Wow! Another incredible video. As newer fan (since Chapter 2), I never experienced the hate and dismissive attitude they got in their early career. But Chapter 2 broke something in the antis. Each solo album is relevant and interesting and successful. The members support each other, celebrate each other. This is not the story the antis wanted to hear. But it’s the reality they have to choke on. Fans like me, an old rock n roller, love this amazing band and more of us are made every day.

The NYT are known to be racist and hate seeing people of color have any success, whether it be in science or in music. I remember them writing about bts a couple of times, and they’ve always been in a negative tone. A few years ago, they mocked india and its space program with a VERY racist cartoon. Also, they have used rhetoric supporting white supremacy not even a couple years ago. Also, some very harmful articles targeting Mexicans (probably others in the latine community as well). New York Times has a history of hating on people of color and this is just one of the many examples within the past DECADE.

You're Latina, but your name is Olga, which is Slavic? And your pfp looks like something a very young person would use - not a middle aged person, considering this is just a yt acc. Seems like BTS spreads lots of lies to paint their faves in a certain way - just like kpop fandoms of various have been known to fake local "interest" of a kpop Idol when they perform concerts or w/e, with posts "who's the ________&_" when we all know you're already a fan. This type of behavior needs to stop - just allow your ults. to grow organically - heaven knows BTS is 100% international and global. And most fans are young, as seen by concert footage. If you're the older fan who was in their mid 20's circa 2013-2015 no need to be ashamed, just be upfront you an old fan. Why is there to exaggerate BTS stats? They did this with NJ and I thought they were semi-viral and yet their MV views are so low? You don't wanna create false expectations like this, do you, that's only gonna end up embarrassing the fandom

One thing that really stuck out to me about this podcast episode was the obvious bitterness the guest has. It was a perfect recipe for an environment that already hates BTS' growth, but more so Jungkook's unapologetic step into mainstream pop. I don't 100% think the guest completely hates K-pop's growth (because of BTS' efforts), but rather, she seems to hate that it wasn't HER favorite group that was able to break into the mainstream audience. They had the resources, so why not, right? I won't deny her fav's impact, but it's nowhere near BTS' impact. BTS weren't meant to succeed and when they were growing, they didn't have the resources her favorites had. With the way Jungkook's album is being received widely, I can't imagine her bitterness at the sight of that. She can't go a second without mentioning who she prefers, rather than focusing on the actual topic of the episode, so nothing tangible was going to come from her side. Your videos are always a light to my days, Boracity. I'll always look forward to your next video, and take care!

As an an 58yr. old American , I absolutely am appalled at the ignorance and lack of intelligence these two so-called experts exude. Especially with the crappy attitude that shows through with bias, envy, and bigotry. My opinion has always been that BTS came out of Kpop and was not born into it. The rejection by the industry was harsh for the same reasons that these two clowns are continuing with their negative narrative on who, what, and why we love BTS.. Trying to categorize these 7 individual genius artists known globally as Bts is impossible.. Yes they happen to be born in the country of Korea and therefore are infact of that origin but that is where the similarities end with other cookie cutter kpop groups.. they are their own unique genre with their own path that no other musicians in the world today can emulate.. especially kpop.. the coattails are out of their reach as the industry tries but fails to climb to their reach.. why?? Because they are not kpop in any way shape or form from the beginning.. It is the path through the industry that they made for themselves as they had to tread through to uncharted areas to find their audience. They made their own map far beyond the borders of ROK to a worldwide global audience who can appreciate and relate to their beautiful music and message..They are also the kind of humans we can confidently call as role models who bring hope and inspiration to fans with treating us as important as they are in our lives.. No one group is so well rounded to encircle the globe in a big hug full of love than these 7 humans.. pun intended! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

@@ArmantoAlex13 that's really not the point. Jungkook is being mentioned because he was mentioned in the podcast, and the conversation pertains to him. He's my bias and I'm really proud of his accomplishments, but it doesn't need to really be talked about right now). I have to say that my blood was boiling listening some parts of that podcast, which I don't even want to know who the host and guest were. Today I was reading a little book and this sentence came out and I think is just perfect "Let's stop leveling one another and begin building one another up". Leveling behaviour is born from a feeling of incompleteness or low self-worth. it is a choice that some humans make when they feel they are not quite as grand as someone close to them. So, instead of praising the other, they seek to bring that person (BTS) down to their level. Love to BTS from Uk.

I began to listen to asian songs when little but starting my teens I always preferred English songs and then starting the pandemia with so much time during the quarantine starting to listen to BTS as a nephew talked to me about them. Since then I am a very huge fan but I would like to say that as a standard person I love music in general and music goes beyond the language. Music is music to enjoy simple. Now about the so called experts talking in the podcast are totally ignorants as they don't seem to have a minimum knowledge of music probably they couldn't even know how many notes exist. To talk about music you have to know extensively about music not just listen to a few songs here and there . Shame on them.
