Why is BTS separable to KPOP? - they write and produce - they made their own way to the top without relying to big companies - they have unique vocal and rap line - they pionereed many things that Kpop is doing right now - they tackle many genres which makes them true artists - especially they paved the way for KPOP. (Not the 2nd gen. or themselves, but to KPOP) "BTS is the greatest artist of our time" -- President Moon Jae in

@@salutcmoa404 Yes. BTS has vocal line, there is soulful, angelic and their vocal range also varies. They ain't like other kpop groups out there just to sing and their rap line share different vibes. Additionally, what do i care about YG artist writing their own lyrics? The fact that i didn't even mention YG here and I only know Blackpink bigger than their own company.

@@salutcmoa404 and where r those yg artists now.....exactly and yes unique vocal line and rap line. you're never gonna find another group who has vocalists like Jin, Tae, Jungkook and Jimin in one group who have distinctly recognizable voices, wide range of singing, so much emotion and just overall talent and hard work put into making themselves better and better year after year. and contrary to what yall kpop stans want us to believe they r spectacular singers and one of the best in the game and no matter how much you guys brainwash each other in ur little bubble or try to start up hate trains its never not gonna be true. as for the rapline [chuckles] idk why i even have to explain it man namgiseok r the best rappers to come out of SK, have lyrics, bars, wordplay etc to back them up and r actually respected by and have worked with big names in the hiphop/rap world so i aint listening to lewsers like Jay Park for example with his one sided beef with bts to tell me is on the same level as bts/put SK on the map or that he has opened doors or any of the dumb sht he be saying. or those yg black culture vulture wannabes who think rap and hiphop is all about being cool, swaggy, rapping fast . like why would i take them seriously when we have hoseok over here having a song with J mf Cole?!?!!? like yall r nobodiesssss

I've had the discussions with so many ARMYS. I can't tell you how many times I've chatted with an ARMY in a line at a concert only for one of us to eventually say "i'm not really a pop fan. I'm actually more into Rock/Metal. BTS is different though." (The amount of little baby bats running around Vegas did my heart good.) The last two concerts that I flew to see were Agust D and BTS. The two before that was for Rammstein and to attend Wave Gotik Fest in Treffen. There is some obvious pipe line between rock fans and BTS' music. The frustrating thing is how, despite spending my entire twenties at rock/metal concerts, somehow getting into BTS took away my "metal/rock/goth" card. Like... what? Are you serious? Counter culture is telling me that I can't sit with them because of what I'm into? REALLY? I think that's the core of it too. The people that get into BTS are music fans. They want to hear a message. THey want to feel an emotion. They want real music. They want art. WHen they don't get it in their genres they'll go looking elsewhere for it. I'm not afraid to embrace something that doesnt "look the part" other wise I would have never gotten into rock or goth in the first place. So why would i let aesthetic and assumptions stop me just because the "look" is handsome korean men? THe art is still there. If you listen without prejudice, you'll like BTS' music.

Agree. I'm a lover of a ton of different music from metal, rock and punk to soul, blues and jazz to opera and classical music. What is the same with all the music i listen to, is the emotion that it invokes in you. I don't care about technique or the technical sides of it, I care of you can get an emotion out of me. Art has to do this for me. Years ago, I thought BTS was just another type of boyband, superficial and I'd get nothing out of it. I'm so glad I gave them a chance, because they're almost all I listen to now. I find it hard to get into other music and performances now. I'm always a little disappointed.

Lol, I also saw a video in TikTok claiming BTS as Punk not because of their genre but their mentality 🤣 And I couldn't agree more! When I first got into BTS music, I presumed that their songs will be all bumble gum pop with just catchy beats and shallow lyrics but the more I listen to their songs the more I realized they are like the opposite of what I imagined. Their songs are actually quite sarcastic and rebellious and I must say they are very bold and most daring artist I've ever encountered. I got into BTS because of their diss tracks, the way they're not afraid to criticize the society, education system, capitalism, government, hip-hop scene, elders, haters, the industry, their fans and even including themselves. There's just a lot in BTS than what meets the eye.

I came here to say this. I worked for an Indie/Punk /Alt music radio station in my city, and BTS definitely fit the description of punks wrapped in glam pop packaging. I recently had a conversation with a punk band front-man and lyricist, and I was describing BTS without using their name or any song titles. When I was done describing them, he asked who they were so he could check them out. When I said "the Korean Boy Band known as BTS!" He choked on his coffee and asked me to send him some links to check out. I am sharing this video as well.

The only ways bts arent similar to conventional rockstars are the lack of sexual harassment, drug and alcohol abuse, and faux ‘we’re rebels so fuck authority’ personas, and for that I’m thankful. @belaytriks Год назад
I think it has a lot to do with time. I am fan of 80's rock and some around 90's after that I went in other things untill K-Pop. Culture and idol image are the main factors that I belive that BTS keep the professional facade. They were conditioned (truly conditioned) to be and behave as idols. That does not mean they were not since the begining nice people only that in their content I can not unsee many tactics used to condition a person masked as "jokes" and the ever present camera there to remember them the desired response for it. For rock stars it was at that time transgresive to be rude, to lose control. Now the really trangresive is the opposite, it is to be nice, to educate ourselves, to be humble, ro be proffessional, to work hard and let the world know you worked hard but still do not take all granted by only your work. Today to have the courage to be polite is to be transgresive. And about the boze, sex, drugs and what not, they have a whole team to make sure we do not know and again, we live in an excess society, to be transgresive is the opposite. They have the boze and have talked about it but they talk about moderation. Their culture ban the drugs so they have that on their favour. And the sex... I bet we just do not about that part of their lives but still property is so revolutionary in this time and age. Right now to be moderate, to be modest, to be humble, sincere and honest withou pretentions is revolutionary, maybe twenty years ago the excess was a way to broke chains, now excess is the chain and modesty is freedom. Funny times we live now.

I get you; I was a 70s kid who grew up on the 'American Graffiti' soundtrack (among others) and an 80s teen who got to watch rock expand from 'rock and roll' in every possible direction. And as much as I enjoyed the bands that emerged, my favorites are those few who cross-genre, mix-and-match. Like, I loved Def Leppard when they suddenly burst into the mainstream...but you can always tell a Def song, or rather, a Mutt Lange production, because of his signature sound. Pre-pandemic, I was getting into Imagine Dragons... until I identified their newest song as 'Oh, that's ID, isn't it?' about two bars in...he hadn't even started singing yet... and I kinda lost interest. So for me, it's the legendary Simon & Garfunkel, One Republic (really, check them out, frontman Ryan Tedder is a fantastic lyricist and has an awesome voice, and they'll give you that 'Wait- this is the same group-?!' reaction. Start with 'Till the Love Runs Out', it's a massive high-energy banger.) and the absolute kings of versatility and variety, BTS.

I was a pure Alternative/Modern Rock fan, who actually refused to listen to BTS when I first heard of them because they were described as a "boy band" and that just wasn't my thing, in any way, shape or form. Finally after months of the algorithm trying to show me videos, I relented, and watched MicDrop... and I was a goner within the first 30-45 seconds. I started to instantly inhale songs, and I found myself crying at a rap love song to a childhood piano, and I paused the song thinking to myself, "What even is this?" I figured I was alone but months later I started to see other rock fans also fall down the proverbial rabbit hole as well. I can't say exactly what it was for me, but something about their genuineness to wanting to make music with messages and putting their heart and soul into every performance is a definitely a big draw, as was highlighted.

And there are many other artists that I casually listen to that I notice all tend to speak a lot about the world we live in and the systems we have to prescribe to. Suddenly one day it was BTS. The musicality of their songs, the stories, the meaning in their lyrics, the sense that I am not alone in the emotions I am feeling, they are definitely parallels I see.

This is a fantastic analysis! I have to add one more key point: independant organic grassroots success built by the fans. That's extremely rock n' roll. I've been following BTS since 2014, so I was there through most of their rise to fame, from a barely-known group coming from an independant label, growing into global superstars. Even back then there were a surprising amount of fans coming from rock, hip hop and alternative music rather than kpop. We bonded over the lyrics, the message and the energy in the same way we did for our other faves. And because of our experience following other small independent artists, we conspired on ways to help this 'hidden gem' of a group get more attention. I literally remember ARMYs having meetings saying "we're a small fandom, but we know BTS deserves to be huge. Big Hit doesn't have money or influence so BTS is never going to get opportunities in the industry... how can we help them get attention?" And then the rock and hip hop fans among us said "well why don't we approach it like an indie rock or hip hop artist, you know, like handing out flyers, putting up posters, calling radio stations, using word of mouth marketing?" And that's what we did. All of it was organised organically by fans with no input or encouragement from Big Hit. We just did it because of how passionate we were about the message BTS were putting out with their lyrics, and how hard they worked to reach a world-class level of skill. There were several ARMY campaigns throughout 2015-2018 where we literally used all those indie rock techniques we knew, hand-printing flyers with BTS lyrics and the title 'Do You Know BTS?' and putting them up in cities around the world just to get people curious. We made other flyers with these 'testimonials' from fans talking about how BTS' music changed their lives, again to show how special their message was and get people curious, showing this wasn't "just a boyband." We made teams to contact radio stations, magazines, tv shows etc. to demonstrate how much public interest there was, and we encouraged each other to have conversations with people in our lives basically 'preaching' the message of BTS, convincing people to overcome their prejudices and give it a try. All that hard work created the situation where BTS were eventually invited to the West organically, because of the number of fans demanding it. Big Hit never paid for them to have appearances, they never tried to force anything to happen. And the industry was very reluctant to accept BTS, but in the end their hands were forced by the power of ARMY.

OMG!!! THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! As a jazz and hip hop fan at core, the more you dig the more crossover and synergy you find with rock! The intricacies in time signature, beat switches, shredding on the instrument are things that jazz fans can really appreciate in some rock performances. Rock performers can take inspiration from jazz musicians and jazz fusion has been growing a lot! The birth of hip hop/rnb and rock was under similar social feelings of power dynamics and both more or less also sonically can be traced down to and/or drew from the blues or funk! So it's not a coincidence that rock elements have been incorporated into hip hop early on (LL Cool J, Eminem, Public Enemy...) or that one of the evolution of hip hop is rap emo (Juice Wrld) or that acts like Linkin Park capture a bit like BTS a lot of rock and hip hop fans! Point is BTS are some of THE BEST LYRICISTS and performers out there!! Their ability to make something sound deceptively innocent and catchy but hiding a big social or political stance like GoGo perfect example or Baepsae or even Paldogangsan maybe hinting at reunification with North Korea! THEY ARE SO OVERLOOKED it's sick!! And they are not afraid to bend genres!!! Their whole discography is sonically so impressive!!!! D-Day or songs like All Day are big social commentaries and Agust D's tour (Yoongi loves making rock productions The Last, Burn it, Tomorrow, Let me know, AMYGDALA...), the Busan concert, Hobi's JACK IN THE MF BOX and his crazy Lollapalooza set🤯they are rapstars, rockstars, they are the top!!! For me BTS is not kpop, they came from that industry but they are beyond that: the songs, the lyrics, the complexity in their music, the concepts on their albums (the MOTS 7 concept is just mind blowing) are far far away from other bands of this industry (kpop). They do, produce, write..they are today the biggest band ever in music history, even bigger than Beatles and I am a Beatles fan. I am army and I will be till I die. Just hope to be able to see them perform live one day. Cheers

Bruh, the extreme performance thing. I totally agree with it. I got into BTS through A-code while looking for a kpop choreo to dance to in 2020 because I was bored. Saw A-code's public challenge of ON and I was like, "Holy f*ck! If this is a cover, I gotta see the real thing." And I watched the Come Prima vid and I was blown away. I always thought kpop is a mass produced music. I actually hated 96% of the kpop music recommended to me. But BTS is just different. It didn't feel fake and I feel the intensity and emotion in their works. Also they're hella funny and relatable. 😂 I know other groups are hella funny and relatable too but I still couldn't get into their music. Trust me I tried. BTS is just different. I'm not saying I like all of BTS songs either. I have removed a lot of their songs from my playlist over time but there's still 100+ BTS songs in my playlist.

Thank you so much for you amazing videos. If I haven't learned something new in one of your videos, I have definitely felt justified in my feelings after listening to your explanations. As a older, rock fan ARMY, I agree with everything you have to say. There is music that I loved during a particular point in my life, but I always say that I have lifetime music, which I will never stop listening to or finding meaning in. Pink Floyd, David Bowie, The Clash, The Beastie Boys, Green Day, Radiohead, Muse, Rage Against the Machine are some of my favorite lifetime bands. When my daughter asked me if I had ever listened to BTS, I knew they would be worth listening to, because I raised her right, LOL. I feel like being ARMY is a logical evolution to being a fan of the music I've loved since I was a kid. BTS is everything I have always loved about music that matters, with the added bonus that I could just die from their kindness, compassion and physical beauty.

I'm a hardcore heavy-metal head, who also loves Hip-Hop and an ARMY for life. I've already realized this of BTS being similar to rock bands or songs on my first year of being an ARMY...and that similarity is how meaningful and powerful both of their lyrics are. I've never been into K-Pop and even after discovering BTS, I'm still not into K-Pop. (which a lot of people don't understand me). First I got into BTS because of their amazing dances and this is just the dance practice videos. And then, their type of music which they have conquered me right away. (Started with their No More Dream era). I have been into lots of concerts and almost all the Top A-Lister Artists...I've seen it performed live, and each Artists got different vibes and energy on each live performances.... But the kind of adrenalin I get from watching rock bands on live is the same adrenalin I get when I watched BTS' live performances. Their meaningful lyrics are each song was played so well by each member and performed with so much emotions are just one of many things why I love BTS so much. And from these experiences, I know why I'm so into BTS. And I'm staying in this freaking rabbit hole for life. I already put a ring on it. 🤘💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

thank you for the video. I have been thinking of suggesting a video on how BTS solo music videos are so different from normal k-pop music videos even their old popular music videos with trendy outfits and crazy CGI with lots of sets and styling? And how personal and freeing it feels with them trying more open spaces and larger performance aspects according to the members than dancing to the hook and whatnot. The astronaut was a masterpiece shot in the open . It still gives me goosebumps when i get to the i love you part . No crazy chores no nothing just his i love you and good bye to his fans. Hobi with arson felt so different seeing this rougher more closed off side of him. It had no crazy choreo too in the MV just him getting his thoughts out. More was creative as fk . The rock elements are my banger to play during my workout. His Collab with j-cole is nostalgic and peaceful showing his dancing roots and how he danced from the streets to the stage RM's wild flower is my personal most pleasurable video to watch because of the open fields and aesthetic, it gives me so much peace. Still life had such a creative curve with the freeze frames and all that ,it was so cool . His collabs also have been very him . Jimin is a performer first so set me free 2 in a performance aspect makes sense. He although is dancing but somehow it doesn't feel like a typical MV, it feel more like an intense representation of him finally trying to be set free of molds he's put in and the constant hate he recieves. Like crazy has been my personal favourite release of the year. The hypnotic sound , the girl the club him enjoying himself the kissing scenes etc were all so different from the Jimin we know of and it felt even better knowing that this is what Jimin wanted us to know about him that he has these sides too. We know that they're grown men but seeing this somehow felt freeing. Again no choreo because he's telling his story. Yoongi made me screem with the cigarette honestly because we all know how controversial that is and how much balls he has to include that scene in his MV. The stabbing the cigar his personas everything gave me a breathing issue and I'm not complaining. His pre-release was so comforting and so him in a sense? The kinda so g you listen in the evening while making tea or doing some work. Again no choreo, no crazy set design no trendy outfits. None of the members did that actually. Jimin was shirtless 👀 but it wasn't something we haven't ever seen before in k-pop . It's also to represent his sexy side . It only feels what we Armys have been telling. as BTS is growing larger even they individually feel more out of k-pop spehere and more them. A long ass para but it's just been in my head so i wrote all of it 😅.

I do have a k-pop playlist on spotify that I listen to, but there are more songs on there by BTS than any other band. There is just something about them and their music that no other band can really match. I know that there are more bands out ther that do write their own music, but it just doesn't resonate the way that BTS's music does. There's more of a spark there that no other band can really replicate.

Great video. There are two other things which add to the rock metal sound. BTS has baritone voices as well as tenor voices, and individual members drop into deeper ranges especially live. Pop favors certain types of tenors. The music instruments also have a wider range of sound, both higher and lower tones. D-Day on Cd has the range and musical complexity of metal or orchestra music. Much of Pop stays in the middle range of sounds.

I think it would strengthen this topic to start with the biggest things they have in common with most rock stars - fundamentally counterculture ethos and high fan loyalty and engagement. Rock and roll was often at the forefront of counterculture ideals within the music scene, challenging the political, social and economic status quo of its times. Many rock, metal, alternative, punk, etc acts have famously dedicated fanbases as well - think KISS, The Grateful Dead, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica to name a few. Many of these fandoms are known for following tours, collecting merch and artifacts, and having an extensive knowledge of the band (sound familiar?). While BTS do use rock & roll inspired instrumentation and vibes in some of their tracks, I think this is less important to their rockstardom, since I don't think their rockstardom is fundamentally about them creating rock genre music. I think it's more about what a rock star is - a self-made cultural enigma, or an artist with counterculture ethos and intense fan relationship, or an artist who renowned as being at the top of their field

I’m not into Pop music, I don’t speak Korean, and I just didn’t think they’d be for me. Then one day, I heard a clip of a spng that had a distinct whistle in the background, and it stuck with me. I found out it was DNA by BTS, and I couldn’t stop listening to it. I watched the video, heard more music, and before I knew it, I was hooked! I surprised myself, a 69-year-old folk musician, when I saw BTS on "Carpool Karaoke" and enjoyed them so much. After a year of being a fan I think they appealed to me with their ability to tell a story and by writing with such clarity about their lives. Their commitment to each other and their fans, dedicating so much effort to perfecting their performances, and somehow keeping their balance in a crazy time, all speak to what remarkable individuals they all are.

My musical tastes are eclectic, always have been. I feel like I can get every kind of music I like listening to BTS. And, even genres that aren't (normally) my favorite can win me over when BTS sing them. It's magic.

Same… Boy with Luv got me into BTS in 2021. For me it is their live performance at BMA 2019 with Halsey. I’m surprised that I got hooked too. I was 51yo lady then who has never got into any kpop and not into poppy genre either. I think for me it was their uniqueness and massive fan support at that venue which shocked even the other celebrities in attendance. Into the rabbit hole i fall… im a big fan now and managed to get all their albums to show support for their artistry. Love your video essays. 💜

I love this so much! Boracity stay's pointing out the things that be in my head! Actually, this idea first occurred to me when I realized that certain rock band performances (thinking ONE OK ROCK, Paramore, etc.) were some of the only performances I enjoyed watching almost as much as BTS performance. The epicness (even if that means approaching the line of cheesiness) and "getting character" and just going absolutely all out is EXACTLY what connects their performances styles. Beautifully said as always, bora!

Oh. My. God. I can't explain how much I agree with every single word in this video. As a rock/metal fan and army I absolutely agree with you! I tend to love bts songs' live versions more just like I prefer the live version of my favourite metal bands' songs. And when on tour there's the live band I'm always so excited because I know I will love those songs' versions even more!

Their lyrics are what made me an ARMY. I mean beautiful men dancing is nice and impressive but I love that they keep me thinking about the big questions and help me with my personal issues. For example, right now they are helping me to grapple with the fact that I will turn 30 soon and what it means to be an adult. BTW: I love your video essays! 💜 Keep them coming ^.^

I used to be into K-Pop during 2nd Gen then drop the whole thing because I start noticing how similar each group are and how empty it feel to consume this genre. This made me lowkey anti K-Pop for a while till I got fascinated by many classical art reference in Blood Sweat&Tear MV. When I look deeper especially into their lyrics (as I do with many artists) I was hooked. One of the main reason I became ARMY is because the substance I found in their music.

Yes. Im a fan of rock/punk bands like 15-17yrs ago! Over d yrs after high school I've developed my liking to other music too until i found bts. I was even listening to motorheas, mudvayne & chiodos at one point. Lol eventho my music taste is kinda diff now im still in love with the rock elements bts has in their music. It's different, nostalgic & lyrics r very relatable. So happy yo see other rocker armys loving bts ❤❤❤

This video is sooo good and sooo true! I'm so happy you made this. And actually I think I like them for their unique blend of all the elements you mentioned and their ability to bend genres. They take elements of different music and performance and make it their own. Bts truly is their own genre.

This is it. You’ve articulated everything I love about their music as a rock fan. It’s a throwback for me-to the music I loved in the 80’s and 90’s, and why I went to Lollapalooza to see J-Hope after not having gone since 1994. Their music speaks to me on so many levels. 🙏💜

I'm so gratified to hear that "Boy with Luv" was your entry point, as it was mine as well. Something so fresh, charming, clean but sexy, clever and engaging that I had to know more about them. I had no idea of the many kinds of content being created to share an artist with such fullness and transparency. I truly love them because they have given themselves so generously to the fandom.

The main difference between BTS and other artists is their love songs, love songs are something that is so much used and sang about that lyrics and mood are very expected, but with BTS, each love song gives a different vibe, lyrically beautiful and deep rather than blame, revenge, cheating and lust, it is lyrically heavy with beautiful words, deeply into stages of emotions and reactions rather than moments and generality, a song like pluto (I'm still orbiting you), love maze (Even in this wandering maze Even on this mysterious path We're taking care of each other), DNA (From the day of the universe's creation and beyond we were made for each other) it's more than a love song, it's a heart song, clean and sweet and meaningful. Of course BTS do much more with concepts but I've wanted to pin point this side as to see that love songs that are 99 per cent of what the music industry do but still BTS can do smth much beautiful with the same concept

This is so true! Growing up I was always mostly into rock, metal and alternative. Then I found BTS and fell in love with them. I’ve always found their lyrics and music match the social issues in a lot of my fave rock music. I also agree the live performances are communal and sound amazing. I love this connection as a fellow rock ARMY. Thank you for making this video!

Wooow it's like you made this video for me 😂 In all seriousness though, I feel like there's a lot of us: metal, punk, hardcore and rock fans whose favourite artist is bts. What made me fall in love with bts were their live performances, more than their recorded music, and second their message and lyrics. No matter how many genres they explore, the rawness of their vocals and performances, their stage presence, and their anti-establishment message will always resonate with me - and with all of us who love that type of energy. With that said, I'm still waiting for them to pull out a full-on heavy song 😂 the first half of hobipalooza and their latest busan gig are my favourite from them, and I can't wait to see what they're gonna do next!
