I've watched both the videos and I'm so sorry some people are being so sensitive about tiny stuff. You truly don't deserve this and hope people understand and stop the hate because hobi himself said "anger is evil" and because of these solo stand and toxic Army's it makes all of us Army's look bad and I just truly hate solo stans also I don't understand why our fandom has become so toxic and weirdly so sensitive about everything and why do people spread hate without actually understanding the context smh

I'm sorry for the solo stans who attacked you for your observations. I hope everyone understands that the fandom is very diverse and huge that it's impossible to keep tabs on what happens outside of it. There is a huge increase in the solo fandoms and antis over the past years as the bands popularity sky rocketed. I really enjoyed your observations and would love to see more of your works. Thank you for your hard work.

I once read in twitter from an AMY, who is well equipped in both English and Korean that - RM write lyrics like he is an old soul, has been living for years and seeing the world from a perspective of a mature man. But V write lyrics like he is a new born just exploring the world for the first time. It make sense in my head.

I have a secret to reveal. I used to study BTS lyrics and storylines, and then practice essays, creative stories and analysis questions on them for my English exams. I’ve finally completed my exams. My teacher told me a few months ago that I am expected to get a C and B (we have two English grades since we have language and literature separately) but after my exams she said that I will definitely get two A or above. 🥺 Thank You Bangtan for helping me with my weakest subject and always motivating me💜 TTU and Fake Love are still my favourite poems to write about. one thing i love about yoongi's writing is his repetition of certain lines or sentiments across different songs, re-examining them each time. a great and easily identifiable example of this is the line "i want a big house, big cars, big rings" which has appeared literally since their debut until releases from last year but it takes on a different meaning every time he uses it, depending on where he is in life.
@merafromyoutube
@merafromyoutube 3 года назад
He also includes repetitions of other members’ writing (usually Namjoon) in some of his solo and rapline work! As if to say, “I finally understand what my friend was saying,” or “I look back on the words you’ve given me, and they’ve stuck with me,” which I find incredibly moving.

@vanshooky3875
@vanshooky3875 3 года назад
one of the greatest things about j-hope's lyricism is the sheer amount of literary and historical references he just stuffs into each verse, to the point where it takes someone three, four listens to fully grasp the meaning of it, and even then, it's difficult to understand, like in Ma city and in Outro: tear. its really interesting to see how he takes his background in dancing and literature (his dad is a literature teacher, and he has mentioned that he liked reading literature) and weaves them into poetry thats not only complex lyrically, but also have an interesting tone to them. his assertion of being from the jeolla-do province, his background in street dancing and hip-hop, and above all, his unique, refreshing, optimistic look at life, "i'm your hope, youre my hope, i'm j-hope" makes him one of the most dynamic songwriters ive ever heard (and yes, there's something about his lyrics and poetry reminding me of the oral poetic traditions, but ive forgotten).

jimin's song always feel so ... off. "sinister" is the best way to describe it. there's a front, either upbeat (filter) or tragic (lie), and beneath that, there's something dark and personal and almost repulsive; the kind of thing you want to overlook but can't, once you've noticed it because it's so glaringly THERE. I love him.

It feels like an early introduction to the Jungian concept of the Shadow, to me at least. Like the things in those songs are all the things he feels or felt he couldn't say and through these songs they rear their heads, a lot like Yoongi's Agust D and Shadow tracks.

Yes, I honestly don’t think enough ppl acknowledge or understand this about BTS. That RM is the main voice and creative direction of the group. Any time you come across a particularly striking or interesting piece of lyricism that jumps out at you, you can bet it came from the genius mind of their leader. He just writes that well. Their well written, witty lyrics and wordplay are why they got so big. Why they’re international and not just a famous kpop group in SK. They couldn’t have done it without him. The other members have added onto his genius to make them skyrocket into even greater territory from there

The thing that I always remember as the interesting difference between RM and Suga’s writing styles is when Namjoon was talking about how originally he was going to write Seesaw. He was going to separate the word into “see” and “saw” to explore the changing of a relationship over time, while Yoongi ended up writing the seesaw as a metaphor for the unproductive ups and downs of a stale relationship that doesn’t work anymore.

After hearing this I have made two conclusions. 1. BTS members are still underrated as artists, be it by the general public, by the kpop fans, or even their own fandom at times. They are such different people, with such different backgrounds and personalities. And it reflects in their songs and lyrics. Each of them has their own crucial thing that they would rather talk about, it could be relationships, hardships, introspection, friendships, helplessness and so much more. Their group songs are what they represent, and their solo songs are what they are. I really want each vocal line member to have atleast one mixtape, so they can have their own personal style and identity. 2. Most of them need a hug. Like seriously, who hurt them? Edit - I think Jungkook has my favourite writing style. Little details and imagery really speak to me. When he dropped Still with you, I was sad, sitting in the back of my car, and it was raining heavily. Talk about perfect timing. That moment of my life is a very vivid memory in my head. But RM is also a very close second. Mono is to this day my comfort album, along with Folklore and Punisher, now. uhgood and everythinggoes make me cry everytime, and Seoul somehow perfectly encapsulates how I feel about my own city and life. Also, 59:04 - Did you just apologize for dropping an hour-long video? Ma'am please, this a gift bestowed upon us. Never apologize.

Absolutely, the lyricism is so deep sometimes that it is normal to skip through it, especially when it is not your own language. and second, yes jungkook's songs , personally feel like open letters, to us. even though they are addressed to everyone, its so hard hitting sometimes. Personally, i like namjoon and yoongi's lyricism, and then jimin, like its an amalgamation of both their styles, and yet jimin is able to separate himself and create something fresh and new, like LIE, like the song is an absolute masterpiece.

I remember one time I was soooo immersed in Outro: Tear that I actually spammed my friend a whole essay about how this song is a perfect example of the writing styles of all three members (yes, I love this song so much, it's brilliant). They all talking about complicated and painful relationships and from the same perspective - someone who sees that their love is coming to end and in the most painful way, when no one does anything globally wrong, but it's crushing and crumbling and they're just hurting each other. Namjoon says a lot about the reasons for this, about his lies and unsaid words, and lack of sincerity from his side. How he loved but became indifferent to her because tried too hard to hide his dark side, swallowed all grievances and insults. And at the end, it leads to burnout and catharsis. She tells all these too correct words of comfort and about the inevitable end, and he doesn't want to listen to that, because when another person tells you that, you feel like you're full of ugly and wrong emotions, and the other person is right all the way. It's all about introspection and his faults and reasons for happening. Suga at the same time talks more not about what led to this but more about his emotions right now. He gives up, he's tired and just wants to end this but you know he's hurting really bad, it's a laugh from exhausting and shout from total helplessness, his heart is burning, and all he wants is to burn it to ash so there's no pain anymore. He's introspective too, but he's all about emotions and the present moment, there's no "if" and "why". There's only them right now. Hoseok on the other hand gives more attention to the structure of his verse. There's a lot of repetitive words, his verse is built around rhythm and his specific flow. There're flashes of memories of how this all went downhill as footage of the past. His verse more about feeling this than understanding like in Suga and RM's verses. That's why he shines here - he perfectly embodies inner chaos and complete disaster that comes with a bad breakup. Bangtan are really great examples of idols who are artists at the same time and this is one of the main reasons for their success - they're telling their own stories in their own honest and complicated way. They're not picture-perfect, they're people before anything else, and that's why we love them so much.

How BigHit handles songwriting and producing in their company should literally be a guide for other entertainment companies because the work all ppl there do as a team is amazing. But of course, you need your band to have talent and passion to do this, and BTS are not the norm in any way.

I wished people who aren't ARMY would talk more about their writing. Of course non-ARMY opinions on BTS don't matter and we really don't need their approval to know BTS's worth, hard work and talent. Mera I really hope you read this. I fucking love these types of videos because while production and beats and melody in kpop is something that is discussed more often by more critical kpoppies something that rarely is discussed is LYRICISM. As an aspiring writer myself who enjoys songwriting and storytelling and emotional depth in music more than any other part I find these videos so refreshing. Plus you have a very descriptive and eloquent way of speaking. I find myself having to rewind your videos often because I get lost in your beautiful use of imagery and adjectives. I notice as well that you speak of emotional potency in self written songs and how that leads to a deeper connection with the art. I think this is so important and it’s something I want to see a lot more of in ktube.

my favorite writer is Yoongi. Whether it's Suga or Agust D I can look up his verse in a song and I will always find a lyric that I can connect to or express myself through. I really love how Yoongi uses his real-life experiences, thoughts, and troubles to write lyrics that express him fully but also clearly deliver emotion and comfort to the listener. There is a song by Yoongi for every mental state I'm in or emotion I feel and when I turn it on that emotion is amplified and backed just the right way. For example, I listen to Honsool to slow down my thoughts or Give it to me when I want to punch people but unfortunately can't. Yoongi manages to establish a connection with his listeners even if their struggles are different than his by just setting the perfect atmosphere and tone through his voice and performance. I'll never go through his experiences of fighting against judgment and hate of industry peers or going number 1 on billboard, but Yoongi has this talent of narrating his out of the ordinary life while being next to his listener looking right at them. He doesn't feel untouchable when he raps about being the King of the world and I think he manages that because he built his character so well. He makes me see through his perspective even though I'll never actually experience it and it's all so effortless I can't not admire him the most. Also, I might be a bit biased, but the references to oral sex and bisexuality really give him those extra brownie points.

His work is like a journey through the entire human experience, and it blows my mind that he’s experienced so much at such an early part of his life. While a part of me regrets the hardships he’s been through, another part of me is so so grateful that there’s an artist out there who’s words and feelings reflect my own so closely. I always feel very seen and understood by his lyrics. (Also those are some good brownie points)

I also love how the writing reflects their personalities. Namjoon is naturally an overthinker, hence the way he uses metaphors and more complex concepts to explain simple situations. As for Jin, himself and the members have said that he always had a straight-foward, not complicated way of thinking, so in the BE-hind interview he even said he always writes from an objective point of view, based on his personal experiences. We also have JK, who said he can relate to Jin's way of writing, but wants to be able to write about and for differents characters and it makes sense seeing how introspective and observant he is. I'm crossing my fingers for a group album completely written, composed and produced by the members!

I've always been impressed by the sheer amount of songs with lyrical complexity about different themes and subjects that RM has written over time. He is heavily involved in 90% of BTS songs, has his own songs, often writes songs for his members and has written for other artists as well. And he isn't 30 yet. No idea how he can still find the inspiration tbh. Writing is a lot more challenging than producing music, because you normally can only write about what you've experienced or maybe read. Music and melodies are a lot more versatile and can really change with the genre, which allows for much more freedom.

Taehyung really makes me transported to a different world, he is a master ( in my openion) of creating fleeting moment, vivid, intense but feather like soft. You can stay there as long as you want, but if you move or speak, the spell might break. I turn to him for a escape, a moment of pure unadulterated beauty which this world fail to offer sometime. I see beauty in his lyrics, unapologetic, romantic beauty with no inhibition to be rational or logical. 4 O' clock remind me of Ode to a Nightingale... probably the setting or powerful presense of nature or a desparate longing to hold onto something which is temporary. And it does not help that Tae has velvet, soulful baritone and loves to sing slow jazz, ballad, lullaby type song. It's atmospheric.

About J-Hope: Yes! And... There's a type of performance he does that is vulnerable, romantic, and usually melodic -- he sings a bit in this kind of delivery. Some sections that come to mind are below, eg, Make it Right, and On, and others. Although his vivid colors are so dazzling, J-Hope is also capable of tender intimacy, old-soul wisdom, and, well, poetry. He can let you come close -- he can be candid and often very hard on himself -- yet his intelligence and unique sensibilities still shine. Btw, thank you for sharing this piece, your thoughts, your language for understanding it all... Thank you! Make It Right: [Verse 3: J-Hope] I became a hero in this world, The loud screams that seek me out, My hand, trophy, and a gold microphone, All day, everywhere. But all of this is about reaching you, It's the answer to my journey. I'm singing to find you, Baby, to you. On: [Verse 3: J-Hope] Bring the pain, It'll become my blood and flesh. Bring the pain, No fear, now that I know the way. To the small things, Breathe. In the darkness, they are my oxygen and light, The power of those that make me "me." Even if I fall, I come right up, scream. Paradise: [Verse 4: J-Hope] Yeah The world doesn't have the right to swear. What is the way to dream a dream? Since they never taught us that, In the made-up dream, sleep-talk of tears, I wake you up from the nightmare for you. Now let's try to smile every day in that paradise. Love Maze: [Verse 5, J-Hope] What can we do? We did the official thing, So we need to follow the rules. Even in this wandering maze, Even on this mysterious path, We're taking care of each other. I always think, even if eternity is hard, I wanna try it. Let's be forever, Our own mountain, our own climb, Our own world, our own heart. Travel toward the exit; Held together, our hands become a map. Jamais Vu: [Verse 5: J-Hope] My song lyrics, each gesture, I become afraid of every word. My jamais vu. Again, I try to escape as always, But still, you grab me, Even as my shadow grows. My life and yours are an equal sign, So my remedy is your remedy.

I Stan bts only because I can relate to their songs. It feels like they know what I am feeling. Personally taehyung and Yoongi's lyrics are favorite and I feel so connected. Kpop fans always tell me that their are other groups who are really good. You should check out. But I never connected to them. Bts is really different, better then others as much as some people don't accept it. Just like when I was a new army and I listened to save me. I don't know why I just feel so connected. I was craving for my loved ones to give me attention that time. After that taehyung's stigma is like a medicine which gives me pain but it's so important. It's one of my favorite taehyung's song and those lyrics are my favorite because of some personal reasons. Bts give me strength, they gave me a hope which I really needed in my life in 2019. as a literature student i adored this! you put into words a lot of observations i've also made about bts' writing styles over the years. but the way you presented it all - with perfect examples, attention to detail and conciseness - was stunning, and it reminded me of why i fell in love with bts' music. i can only imagine how much time and effort went into the making of this video, props to you. to add to your astute analysis of the rapline's writing styles: while namjoon often writes in an introspective, intellectual vein, yoongi's writing feels like raw expression of emotion, even when his lines are incredibly intelligent and calculated. j-hope focusses on the dimension of the body, not just the body of the music as in the soundscape, but also the body of the performer and the listener. his music is aimed at creating physical sensations and reactions, and somewhat in contrast with the other two rappers, he frequently explores the spontaneity of music. if i had to sum up their styles in a metaphor, it would be this: namjoon's songs are like sculptures carved from stone, carefully sharpened and perfected. yoongi's are paintings, showing delicate brushstrokes next to rough ones, material manifestations of different personas. j-hope's are like performance art - they are spaces to be explored and experimented in, to be filled with sounds and movement to create a unique experience within time.

my favorite part about j-hope's songs is the fact that the lyrics itself sound like music. you explained it much better than i ever could, but just the cadence of his voice and his choice of sounds makes it seem like as if you're listening to two different songs at once: one being the rhythm and sound of the words while the second is the actual lyrics. to my non-korean ears, hearing him rap sounds a lot like scat singing which makes all his verses SO satisfying. the part where you said it sounds like he came from out of this world describes his style perfectly.

I could never put a finger on why his art just.. felt like a fucking shot of adrenaline and electrified me so much. you put it in words. "high-wire" is the perfect phrase for him.

And whatever she said in this video about hobi, specially the unhinged part was personified in his album Jack in the Box. Like he didn't just go unhinged, he went absolutely crazy and it was epic.

Jungkook's writing style is definitely the most appealing to me, maybe because I'm a hopeless romantic and watching my bias write songs like this just makes me melt 😂

Someone on twt said Namjoon writes as if the whole world is listening to him and Yoongi writes as if no one is listening to him. They are my favorite songwriters in bts. Thank you for this hour long video ❤️

Didn't have the time to leave a comment when this video was first posted but after seeing your follow-up video I think I have to spread some positivity. To be honest, I'm not an Army and was never really interested in BTS beyond liking some of their tracks and saving them in my playlist (not that I hated them, either! Just didn't give them enough thought as I would some other groups that I love). Originally I just put this video in the background to listen to while doing some work because I love the way you express your thoughts regardless of what the topic is. However, I ended up watching and listening intently the whole hour the video was playing. You really helped me understand just how much thought and effort BTS members put into their lyrics and I appreciate it much more now. The way you talked about the members never suggested that you disliked any of them, I don't even think anyone would have gone out of their way to make such a high-quality analysis of a work of someone they dislike. I definitely started looking at BTS in a new light after watching this video and I'm listening to both their group and solo music more now. Thank you so much for this video.

Mera, I'll be honest with you, I love your videos so much, I am a person who's still in her mid-teens who just loves music but never pays much mind to what she listens to. But hearing the way you talk so passionately about music I get inspired to dig deeper and I'd like to thank you for inspiring me to do so I wish you a good day and also stay healthy! ❤

I think there is nothing wrong in what u have said abt j-hope. I think u truly understand how j-hope is unique. Its his understanding of form, his humour in writing, and his impeccable flows, rhythm and expressions that make him who he is. I think that the fact that everyone thinks message is only through lyrics is wrong, message can be conveyed through sound as well. And message through sound is a very important part of j-hope's music and in fact, music in general. The message conveyed through the flow, the rhythms, the melodies, the vocal expressions are extremely important in my opinion. However, the only word that i would disagree with is less message-driven, more sound-driven is a much better wording. And to all the people who were unhappy, i don't think that more sound-driven is a bad thing, don't try to pretend that jhope doesn't care about sound, that doesn't make sense. HE IS A MUSICIAN OFC HE CARES ABT HOW THE MUSIC IS GONNA SOUND. P.S. I am so sorry mera for all the tainted souls who sent death threats and what not to you. U deserve much more than this. I AM here to tell u that u deserve everything in this world. Thank you for this video it was so informative and i humbly apologize to you for what those insensitive creatures did to you. Just remember u r the best ever and u deserve the entire universe for the amount of effort u put into each of ur videos. I love ur content sm

even tho picking a favourite joon lyrics feels like picking a favourite child i distinctly remember one stroll through the park at dusk where i could physically feel these moonchild lyrics hit me in the gut: In the moon’s hours, look at the night sky through the eyes of your soul It will show you your window and your time Did you know? That street lamp also has many thorns Take a close look at that flickering light Isn’t a night scenery such a cruel thing A splendid view unfolded before us that is made up of someone’s thorns Someone else will surely be comforted by looking at your thorns We are each other’s night scenery, each other’s moon

i was thinking about yoongi's writing style the other day and how uniquely him it is. i notice a lot of people have a hard time describing it because it doesn't use the same devices as someone like namjoon does but you did a really amazing job in this video. it just perfectly articulates each member's unique approach to lyricism.

omg ok one thing i wanted to say about jimin's lie is if you also look at it with respect of music theory, i think its genius!! the entire song is in 3/4 time which always gives a song a never-ending feel like the lie he's talking about. Secondly the song is in a minor key but switches to a major key around when he says "lie" in the chorus. That is one thing that really impacted me when i listen to the song. I think its a reason why it hits so hard. Its clearly defining the lie

I came here after listening to Face because I rememberd you talking about how he uses "you" to talk about a different persona or a shadow of himself, I got that feeling a lot in Face but I can't really put it into words the way you do. It would be so cool if you did a video on his album

"J-Hope is Meowth" 😭 Love the long videos, don't apologize for that :) Long form appreciative video essays like this make me fall in love with the subject matter more and more. But I must say, I was fine for an hour, then you put Magic shop on. It makes me cry every single time I hear it or read its lyrics, no exception. J-Hope and V are probably the writers I'm most drawn towards, the visuals they paint are so vivid I live for that, I enjoy that a lot. Jungkook's lyrics are so lovely and pulls at the heartstrings.
