Korean pop-group BTS visits the United Nations to launch the new #GenUnlimited Youth Strategy.
----------------
A world in which the human rights of every young person are realized; that ensures every young person is empowered to achieve their full potential; and that recognizes young people’s agency, resilience and their positive contributions as agents of change.
The Secretary-General tasked his Envoy on Youth, in conjunction with the UN system and youth themselves, to lead development of a UN Youth Strategy. Its aim: scale up global, regional and national actions to meet young people’s needs, realize their rights and tap their possibilities as agents of change.
The strategy is ambitious. It will guide the UN system in stepping up support for the empowerment of young people, while ensuring that the Organization’s work fully benefits from their insights and ideas.
Investment in four areas will consolidate the position of the United Nations as a global leader in engaging with youth. It will become a pioneer of knowledge, a dynamic source of innovation, a catalyst for solutions and a champion of accountability. The strategy’s thematic priority areas reflect all three pillars of the UN system: sustainable development, peace and security, and human rights.
Young people today want the sustainable, peaceful world envisioned in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Realizing their aspirations depends on realizing their rights-to empowerment and development, participation and choice. They offer 1.8 billion reasons for the United Nations to stand by their side.

Hi Im 26y.o army. By the end of 2016 my parents forced me to leave a city, a country that I was happy to be at, to be back at my home country with them. I left my boyfriend there. For the first 3 months back in my home country I started to show symptoms of depression. And when I broke up with my bf I fell really hard into depression and blame myself for failing my life. On June 2017 I decide to seek help to a psychiatrist and around the same time I found BTS and listened to No More Dream and other songs. I collected my life again, started to trust myself that I can do what I wanna become in life. And few months later Love Yourself series started, I fell deeper for these men. I dont care that people around me never understand why I love BTS, Thank you for getting my life back. "Dont be trapped in someone else's dream" - BTS N.O.

I will make this speech as my turning point in life. I'm 30 yo girl with painful past and a lot of mistakes but I'm ready to love myself even more and accept me for who I am. This was such a beautiful speech. Knowing that Namjoon's first language isn't English and yet he spoke so eloquently. Even though I am a fan of the group, their overall message is so motivating and I just had to comment about it. I really appreciate their impact not only on their fans but internationally. They are really changing the game and I'm proud. Thank U.N. and UNICEF for giving them this opportunity to prove that they are more than a "boy band".

Also, about the part where English isn't his first language: I was so impressed because not only did he speak so eloquently; he was able to deliver such an effective speech that really reaches out and relates to his audience. All of his pauses were really meaningful. His sincerity. Just everything. I loved everything about this speech.

I am so INCREDIBLY proud of them! Namjoon's speech has really reached me. I was on my bed, just woken up, tearing up at how beautiful and true Namjoon's words have touched my heart. These 7 men. These 7 talented, courageous and intelligent men, have made my days so much brighter and have brought a sense of self love that hasn't been very present within myself. I an not yet at the stage of loving everything about myself or think of myself as someone special, but I am willing to try to change my mentality of that and to appreciate who I am as a person. So thank you BTS. Thank you Namjoon, for helping everyone to not look down on themselves and to appreciate life as unique special individuals to exist and breathe into this world.

You see,Namjoon doesnt have to prepare new idea for his speech. He took a bit from their song and that will be the essence of his speech. And his entire speech does not sound like a speech at all. It's a poem. A song. A story. BTS has been telling the same story since debut.

RM perfectly incorporated Unicef's new campaign GENERATION UNLIMITED on this speech. I am in awe of how he wanted to leave each of us a question and a task. I was also teary-eyed as he bravely shared a vulnerable part of his life in this. How he became like a ghost stuck under society's norms and expectations, but finding his own voice with music as his sanctuary. It took him time, almost gave up but stood still and now living with a bigger and positive perspective in life and humble heart. Acknowledging every part of his life, his past mistakes and failures, his current and work-in-progress future self. He embraced it and shared it as an example, with BTS and Army He became a SANCTUARY Himself to some other people too, and this was it. This is his VOICE. I'm sure he was nervous because he had to talk in a foreign language but he did it so well, I'm so proud of him ! And the rest of BTS too of course. When RM said "All lost our names. We became like ghosts." It hit me. Though I was trying my best to come into the love myself aspect, I always looked at myself from other people's perspective. 'Will this be okay?' 'I hope I don't get hated'. I never truly tried myself, I always kept bending. I never made a line saying "This is me. I'm unique" It wasn't like accepting criticism. It was accepting a mould, a mask that wasn't me. I became someone who was just in namesake, just existing but not living. Namjoon, your voice today made me rethink many things. In this battle of loving myself, the path where true love begins, thanks for lighting up a torch which helped me understand the way. Thank you so much BTS. Thank you for calling us the best fans, we will always be your, your special refuge, your special people who will always support you.

We need influential people to speak about important issues to young people. BTS's lyrics about anxiety, peer pressure, financial struggle, and faraway dreams are parts of every person's life. Their music truly speaks to people, young and old. For them to build up a platform so expansive and to use that platform as a means of spreading awareness truly proves them to be more than just performers; they are artists, activists, philanthropists, leaders of our generation.

BTS are a force of this generation and have been and continue to be the catalysts for so much good and love and healing. I am unbelievably proud and inexplicably moved. I can't even begin to imagine how nervous Namjoon must've been throughout his whole speech. He did extremely extremely well and I'm so proud to say such a well spoken man is my biggest inspiration and bias. He truly is a rare star amongst the dark blue skies and a hidden gem beneath the earth. Thank you for showing us the beauty in our gravest mistakes, reminding us to not be ashamed of our past selves, and to continue to have a voice for ourself and to love us for who we are as a person regardless of our skin, gender, occupation. The most important thing about namjoons speech is that we all...im 22..we all resonate with his words..each and everyone of us have tried to mould ourselves into societys box. And coming from a really conservative country and as a woman his words mean a lot to me. I have changed a lot from a self loathing mess to talking up for me but i still have a long way to go...we all have lost ourselves at times..some of us are still lost. Lets all find ourselves nurture our hearts and soul because after all LOVING OURSELVES comes first. It is more emotional it is not just for this speech but it is all the more telling stories they have been telling over the years through their music. Express their fears, weaknesses, and mistakes. The common person wants to hide it though. But as you know, the truly strong and wise person doesn't hide their weaknesses. Even the rather nervous voice of Namjoon is more authentic.

I think it's high time for the general public to stop viewing BTS as just mindless robots who entertain just because a company tells them to. This speech has caused a shift in so many young and old people alike that they're starting to actively change themselves for the better; to love themselves in a genuine and healthy way. BTS have always spoken about the struggles and anxieties of the youth through their music, showing their listeners all over the world that it's okay to be a certain way and that you're not alone, but there should be room for growth. Really interesting how BTS didn't just stop at the "Love Yourself" narrative. To follow it with the movement to "Speak Yourself" is just mind-blowing. I myself didn't realise how important it was for us as human beings to start speaking up about ourselves. It's important to get our story out there to achieve the growth that we've been aiming for. I am flawed and I am made up of my past mistakes, and this campaign is telling me that I am valid and that I can demand for a better life; a life I deserve. This was extremely inspiring. He was so eloquent with his words and it was related on many levels. He has a way ..idk he commands attentions when he speaks. It was like a sonnet, I shed a tear. The message of speaking up and owning who you are is powerful and positive! Youth needs that in today’s world. Be brave and bold and take your future. Love Yourself and forgive yourself and speak for yourself. What an amazing group!

Proud of BTS, they have really inspired millions of young people around the world to have dreams, to have hopes and to have their own voices. They are really an inspiration, real role models. Kim Namjun speaks well, his words are beautiful, intelligent and eloquent. More power BTS, and keep on inspiring and giving hopes! They will never go to waste.

I just love his inspiring speech. The message is for young people to hear his/her inner voice n speak it up. After that working hard towards their voice. For me who is 30 y/o ARMY this speech inspiring me to find my own voice. It doesn't matter how old are you. It never too late to hear our voice n speak it up. His speech really suit the Generation Unlimited campaign 👏👏👏

This was truly inspiring. In today’s world, it does in fact feel like youth learn to bury their voices. They mold themselves into what society pressures into them. But it is Youth that will have to live in this future and they do need their voices heard. It’s time to listen to them so they are no longner just an echo in empty space, instead their voices need to echo in our minds and hearts. These boys have hidden to use their social platform to reach these young people. They use broad terms so everyone is included. They teach possible messages with music, which is hard to find these days. You turn on the radio and hear songns about drug use and sex and money...and these boys sing about self love, dreams, and finding confidence. They promote reading with all of their literary references in their songs. Rave about museums and challenging yourselves. They donate to charity and their recent work with UNICEF raised a huge amount of money, which promoted Army to donate to many charities as well. These are the things young people need to see highlighted. This speech was beautiful and relatable. I’m so glad I was able to watch this today.

Really proud of what bts is doing. I am older than all bts members but age can't stop me from loving them and i can't deny that Their meaningful messages have helped me overcome my insecurities and depression. They have inspired me to live my life positively and now,as a teacher, i try my best to help my teenage students to speak love and embrace themselves. Bts saved me and still help me with my depression and i will always support and love.

A very powerful and impactful speech by non other then Kim Nam Joon, but I know that his words and story is no different from the other BTS members own. Their words, music, stories and most importantly their sincerity in all that they do is the reason that so many people and fans of all ages believe, trust, follow and are inspired by them. They are an inspiration for youth, yes, but also for anyone at any age who feels lost, misunderstood, alone, unappreciated, trapped, are struggling, wandering through life still and/or unsure of their future. They give hope for tomorrow, and in this worlds present situation, it is the greatest gift of all because with hope, you can dream for better days.
