(BTS DARKER SIDE MAY HAVE FINALLY WON!?) RAP FAN FIRST EVER REACTION "BTS" -BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS 

Blood Sweat and Tears video and song were built and written based on Demian, a novel by Hermann Hesse which won a nobel prize in literature back in 1946. I read this book (because of this Mv) and I'll try my best to interpret and summarize the story here. The story follows a young boy named Sinclair who had a friend named Demian. Demian acts as Sinclair's mentor during his childhood and transition to adulthood. Sinclair as a young adult experienced series of existential crisis, believing he lives in between the world of light (the world of illusion, full of goodness) and "the dark world" (the real world which is full of lust, temptation, anger and evil world). Demian, and later on Sinclair's another mentor Pistorius, believe that in order to become a full person a human needs to embrace both of their light and dark sides. This will then lead Sinclair to find out about Abraxas, the god of light and darkness. There are sooo many imageries and jaw-dropping details on the MV that represent details in the book that I cannot write here because this comment is already an essay. lol. But the point is this song is about temptation, about being a human and embracing both of your good and dark sides. The scene where Jin kissed the statue (which I believe the representation of Abraxas) means he seals the deal with the devil himself in order to fully embrace himself as a person who isn't perfect, full of flaws. The white and black doors represent the world of light and the real world. The phrase that RM read in English here was also taken from the book, page 26 (on the version that I read). It says "He too was a tempter, he too was a link to the second, the evil world with which I no longer have anything to do." "He" here refers to Demian, that Sinclair once thought as a bad influence for him, maybe it's because Sinclair tried to deny his dark sides. The book is heavily influenced by a swiss philosopher and psychiatrist Carl Jung, who was Hermann Hesse's doctor back then. Hesse learned a lot about Jung's psychoanalysis and experienced it himself so that was why Demian was heavily influenced by it. What makes it even more interesting, BTS album MOTS 7 is also based on Carl Jung theory (hence the songs Persona, Shadow, and Ego were born-- these 3 elements are important in Jung's theory Maps of the Soul). BTS are deep, my friends. They literally make a lot of armys become smarter and read on classic literature like this because of them. lol. Please note once again that this is all my own interpretation after reading the book, take it with a grain of salt. Welcome to the BTS Universe!

This album called wings First song of this album is Boy meets evil 🤯

Swings represent innocence. The balloon represents the loss of innocence.. This video came years before the Jungian inspired music of BTS. As Haura said this album was based off of Herman Hess' book "Damien". If you remember, BTS albums are in the order of human growth. The first 3 albums are about their school days. The next three are about the trials of youth and young adulthood. It's easy to get lost if you don't pay attention to the release dates of the different songs.

Blood, Sweat and Tears is from the Wings album which came out in fall 2016, 3 1/2 years, two eras, and 5 (Korean) albums (not including BTS World soundtrack) before Black Swan came out on the album Map of the Soul: 7 in Spring 2020. The Wings era (Wings & You Never Walk Alone) is based on Nietzsche and Hesse, the next 3 albums, the Love Yourself era (LY: Her, LY: Tear, & LY: Answer) are based on Erich Fromme, Joseph Magno, Chinese four-line poems*, and more**, then the most recent is the Map of the Soul: era with only 2 albums MOTS: Persona and MOTS: 7 which, as you already know, is based on Jung. I love that you mentioned that balloons represent childhood and innocence. Since you correctly theorized this video is about temptation, and the book it's based on, Demian, is the story of a boy's coming of age and finally embracing his dark and light sides, letting go of the balloon symbolizes letting go of his childhood and thus his innocence. By the way, the painting in the scene where V jumps from the balcony is "The Fall of Icarus" by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. You identified the Icarus-theme in the other paintings which I believe are also Bruegel. The painting you recognized that Jin is staring at in the beginning is "The Fall of the Rebel Angels" also by... Bruegel. The only statue I can identify is the one behind J-Hope. It's La Pieta by Michaelangelo which depicts Mary cradling Jesus' body after the crucifixion. The green drink RM imbibed is Absinthe, which used to contain a hallucinogenic, identified not just by it's color but by burning the sugar cube to make the cocktail. J-Hope's character is thought to NOT be tempted, or not be a fallen angel in this video as he is shown shooting the tempter and Fallen Angel V, (portraying Hesse's Demian) with an arrow. Did you see the German writing over the mirror? It's a quote by Nietzsche that says, "One must still have chaos within oneself to give birth to a dancing star." Also, when Jin is looking in the mirror at the end, did you notice there's a different type of flower in the reflection? Both flowers have a symbolic meaning but I no longer remember what they were and my notes from 3 years ago are long gone. 😓 Maybe someone else here will know, or one of the explanation videos (such as Xceleste) will have it. * The Chinese characters in the phrase 起承轉結, one of which is used in the title of each of the 4 main releases during Love Yourself era, make up the structure of Chinese four-line poems. Like an outline, each character indicates a different part in the progression of a story: introduction/beginning, development, twist/turn, & reconciliation/conclusion The Love Yourself series applies them this way: • Euphoria; Theme of Love Yourself: Wonder 起 (introduction) • Love Yourself: Her 承 (development) • Love Yourself: Tear 轉) (twist) • Love Yourself: Answer 結 (conclusion) They're not always used in order. For example, despite being the "intro" part of the story BTS released the Euphoria MV after Her and before Tear. ** (trying to avoid spoilers) Individual songs in the LY series, such as Serendipity (MV) and Magic Shop (song and LY:Tear trailer) are based on other literary works and psychological or philosophical theories. Dionysus is obviously based on Greek mythology, and Singularity (MV) references works of art, one based on Greek mythology, and one on a famous literary character.

Oh my lord, I am BLOWN AWAY... Of all the reactions and analysis of this song that I watched so far, no one caught the Icarus painting. You gave me the final piece of the puzzle. V is Icarus in this, his representative color in BTS is green (His mic and in-ear pieces are green). Everything infecting or tempting them is green : the poison in RM's cup , on JK's finger, under Jimin's blindfold, the fumes around Suga and the splash coming off of J-Hope's arrow hitting V). This song and the 2 mvs(check the japanese version) are about temptation. The way I see it, Jin is by himself in the museum, he represents the Everyman (any human) He is contemplating the painting, the others are riding bikes, touching the art and sitting on the pedestals (def not museum behavior). They represent parts of Jins (our) psyche, and they present in pairs; JK and RM; innocence and experience. Suga and Jimin; the shackles of society and our inner fears. JHope and V seem to represent greed and temptation itself, V in particular represents the part in ALL of us that longs to Fall, both the tempter and the temptation. (Very loose interpretations, the members could even represent the 7 sins; regardless they seem to represent parts of our inner selves and how we approach/deal with temptation) Jin is contemplating his own temptations, something every person has to confront multiple times in our lives. When Jin finally understands that we need to Fall in order to understand ourselves more completely, he turns back and gives in to temptation (kisses the angel statue). He takes his first steps toward Self Enlightenment, represented by the image of his face cracking like an egg (this is imagery used in Demian to represent the emergence of Abraxas (in the form of a bird), the divinity of the self enlightened human). Notice that when Jin decides to give in to temptation, all the others start to breath easier, giving in to temptation leads to discovery and self enlightenment. The japanese mv takes things to extremes, shows the dark side of temptation in the form of excess. These mvs are pieces of art, people will be dissecting them for years, as there are at least 3 layers of framework to interpret: the Bangtan universe thread, the Demian overlay and the human psyche idea touched on above. I could write chapters on the symbolism of the Apple alone, the First temptation, the forbidden fruit, the fruit of good and evil, or more accurately, the fruit of Knowledge.

At 10:38 the wall Jin is facing has the carvings (translated->) “You must have chaos in your soul to give birth to a dancing star.” by Nietzsche (One of Joonie’s fav quotes) “Blood, Sweat & Tears” is considered one of the ‘Queens' in BTS’ discography.

BTW-there are two versions of Blood Sweat & Tears, this one (Korean version) and the very trippy Japanese version. The Japanese one is tied into the BU, the Korean one follows a different storyline.

Knocked it out of the park again! It is INSANE how quickly you’re able to get to the meat of these songs/videos. In a way I wish you wouldn’t start trying to follow the whole BU story yet, but maybe go back to it after watching the videos as stand-alones. There are so many elements outside of the songs and videos that are essential to fully understanding the BU storyline, but so much to see in the videos without delving into it. I’ve seen reactors get too caught up in trying to figure that out, then they don’t focus on the other elements of the song/video. But you’re leaps and bounds above most of the reactors I’ve seen in terms of catching all the symbolism and grasping what the video is trying to say so maybe you wouldn’t fall into that trap. I’m learning from you with each reaction I watch. I love your enthusiasm, too, and watching you fall in love with the songs is just a joy.

Okay about that grail line (I knew that the grail was poisoned but I drank it anyway). I actually have a little theory about this one that not many people seem to pick up. I'm not sure if you're familiar with medieval tales, but this line reminded me of a very particular one. I'm not sure about the exact story itself, but it's basically about a hero who faces their enemy one-on-one. But, instead of dueling, the enemy gives the hero a choice. He placed two goblets in front of him. One of them is filled with poison, and the other one is filled with wine. The hero gets to pick a goblet to drink out of, and the enemy will drink out of the other one no matter which one the hero chooses. It's a tale of blind luck, really. There's no way to use logic to figure out which goblet is filled with poison. So, anyway, going back to the line. I imagine that it's told from the hero's perspective. But, in this situation, they know which goblet is poisoned. They choose the poisoned goblet, however, in order to save their enemy, who they should hate but they don't. I don't know, it might be a reach lmao. Anyway, love your reactions 💜

The green that “melts” into RM’s drink is absinthe. Absinthe was known as a form of alcohol that would drive the drinker into madness and depravity. They used real absinthe in the video and RM hated it! Personally, I really like it, so maybe I’m depraved! 😏

I don't usually comment, but this MV is close to my heart because it was my intro to BTS, and it was so perfectly in my lane that I dived in headfirst into BTS and haven't surfaced since. They're just incredible and have made my life so much better. Honestly I feel like the only piece of the puzzle to this MV that you're missing is the book "Demian" by Hermann Hesse, because after I read that it connected those final last dots for me. There is also connections to the BU, but personally for me this isn't one of the key pieces to understanding it -- obviously that opinion will vary from person to person, of course. The bird painting going up in flame, for example, is in both the novel and the BU, so it's a link between them. But the symbolism in this MV seems to me to be more connected to the novel given how much of the imagery is taken from "Demian" -- such as Suga playing the organ, since part of spiritual/psychological journey in "Demian" happens due to listening to organ music being played in an empty church. (Also just adding this since it seems to be overlooked a lot, the green drink being prepared in RM's early scenes is pretty clearly taking the imagery of absinthe being prepared with a sugar cube being dripped into the glass over a spoon). I've been going through all your BTS reaction videos, and I agree with a lot of the ARMY in the comments -- you're really nailing a lot of it, and your openness to learning more is so great, and I love the enthusiasm and respect you give our guys. I love being able to see the wheels spinning in your head while trying to critically break-down these videos and not just taking them at face-value and letting your audience spit explanations at you. (which can absolutely be super helpful when wanting to understand the artist’s interpretation and to appreciate their body of work for what it was intended to be. BUT at the same time I think it’s awesome when reactors take their time to discover their own meanings behind these songs and how they relate to us as humans b/c that’s what art is!). Listening to your interpretation was great. I actually had an insight even though I thought I was done analyzing this video and song! Taehyung/V's character (Icarus/Fallen Angel/Lucifer) is the only one not struggling with temptation. He is under the veil indulging in secret pleasures, smiling as he jumps. He too was a tempter. A 40min reaction to my favorite song and video? Is today my birthday???

A lot of the ARMY has explained a lot already, I will overlook the meaning of colors, relation to V because it was already explained, but this is my insight on my favorites parts that are about SUGA and Jimin. Blood Sweat and Tears has a japanese version, that is a sequel to this one, at least regarding the subunit of Suga and Jimin. In the korean version, you see SUGA trying to cover Jimin's eyes but he takes his hand away and SUGA isn't there anymore, later on we find him alone in the blue room and much later he is with a blindfold in his hands and Jimin is with the apple in his. The apple is a special item for Jimin in whole Bangtan Universe, we find it around him in the BU videos, it represents some memory of his past, when the time comes and you follow the story, people will explain to you a certain scene that can be found in the discography book in one of the albums. This memory is represented by the apple, this memory will always be something that will Jimin lose himself. So Yoongi blindfolds Jimin to not watch "evil", then Jimin strugles and finally releases himself falling into temptation, so it means Yoongi failed in saving him. In the japanese version, the sequel, we see again the same story but in a darker and psychodelic version, an intoxicating version and my favorite, this is like a parallel reality in which Yoongi again tries to save Jimin, but it is like part of Jimin survived from the korean BS&T dimension and is trapped in SUGA's domain, he is confused and doesn't where he is at, but his apple as always is with him, during the video we see Jimin trapped in this safe place and another Jimin scaping Suga completely intoxicating, running around halls and stuff trying to find something, until he finally reaches the hallway where innocent Jimin is being kept by SUGA, from inside Jimin feels him and gets startled, so corrupted Jimin goes his way and just as he opens the door and is about to see Jimin, SUGA appears and not letting innocent Jimin see corrupted Jimin (see not evil), making corrupted Jimin disintegrate and Jimin loses grip of the apple that finally fals from his hands. In this dimension SUGA saves him.

The dance practice for Blood, Sweat & Tears is really great - it’s great to see the entire choreo. I think it’s one of their best dance practices.

This songs dance practice is my fav of all the bts dances, also this song and MV has so many hidden gems and meanings that you have to re watch it over a hundred times, i keep finding something new even after a million times watching it. Also this song has a sensual feeling aswell and j love my Jiminies vocals in it. Also I love the storyline thru out this MV and it has many deep hidden meanings and even to this day I'm still finding those messages and meanings
