I love how it’s not necessarily about another person and their fake love, but directed inward and Basically telling the story that if you’re not true to yourself or love yourself first, then love of any kind or for anyone will always be ‘fake’ (notice they look in the mirror often). It follows their “Love Yourself” album trilogy’s (3 albums, “Fake Love” is on the 2nd album when the idealized love falls apart and your faced to look inward and self-reflect and question your true self) theme of “Love Yourself” where in the last album you realize you’re the one you should love and accept the most before you can truly love anyone else. 💜

I heard this and I decided to look for it and copy and paste just for YOU. During a recent video interview with Beats 1, RM opened up about the true meaning of "Fake Love" and how it actually fits into a bigger story that the group is trying to tell through their music. "Basically, our albums are like a four-part series; [the series] is about love. So [Love Yourself: Tear] is part three and it's like a turning point. We're saying that if you're not true to yourself, your love won't last forever. The love could be person to person, it could be between me and myself," he explained. He then joked, "It's kinda deep." And like, it kind of is though.

Others have explained their Love Yourself album series, the BU storyline, how they very rarely use CGI and cleared up some who's who, so I will just quote Jimin and say you nice, keep going. 💜 Butter will have its worldwide debut performance at the BBMAs May 23.

I always feel fake love has these meanings 1 - A love lost between two people, a couple or friends 2 - The 'love' fans have for their idols an their commentary of them trying to deal with that 'love' and fans too high expectations 3 - A self love, learning to love yourself even when you are weak

I think it’s about time for you to watch “Who is BTS: the seven members of Bangtan.” (Bangtan comes from their Korean name “Bangtan Sonyeondan” which means “bulletproof boy-scouts” and that’s where the BTS acronym comes from.) BTS definitely have songs about girls/romance, but a lot of their songs (especially their newer songs) that may seem to be about a romantic love on the surface can also be about self-love, parental relationship, friendship... There are always layers. :) There is a fictional story line called the Bangtan universe (the BU) that runs through a lot of their MVs, so some of the imagery in those MVs may seem random or unconnected to the lyrics, but nothing is an accident. You don't NEED to delve into the BU to enjoy the MVs, just know that they DO make sense inside the BU context. As you watch more MVs, you'll start to see themes related to specific characters i.e. Jimin and water, Suga and Fire, J-Hope and mental health/pills... if you ever WANT to dive down that rabbit hole, there are fan made "road maps" you can follow. :) It's also good to know that virtually ALL of this MV is practical... as not CGI or Green screen. There IS a little, the fire by Suga was made bigger, but it WAS really there, water pouring out over Jimin's head is real, and the floor falling out under Jungkook's feet... really fell away. It's not Jimin looking down on himself, it's Jungkook who's looking at each member dealing with their own struggles. This MV connects to the Bangtan Universe (BU) and helps in creating a bigger picture so that's why you probably won't get it so soon. But it's basically reflecting that Jungkook can see all the members being hurt and if we look at the notes, jungkook knows everyone is hiding something but they all pretend to be happy in front of him. Jungkook probably wanna help the members here. If you just wanna look at the meaning of the song, they have 3 albums in their Love Yourself series. 1st album 'LY:Her', with title track 'DNA', talks about falling in love. On its own, DNA seems like a typical love song, but when viewed in the context of the Love Yourself albums it is instead a song about fake, unhealthy love and infatuation. A love where you only show that side of yourself which the other person wanna see. This also goes for BTS only showing that persona of themselves that fans might like. The 2nd album in this series is 'LY:Tear' with title track 'Fake Love'. As you can see with lyrics of fake love, this is where they realise they've started to loose themselves by putting on a mask and that it's all fake love. If we can't accept our own flaws how can be expect someone else to do that. The last album in this series is 'LY:Answer'. In answer they talk about how the answer to all their questions is self love. "You cannot love someone else if you don't love yourself first" - RM. In Answer, the song Epiphany talks about how i gave everything to this person but now i've realised I'm the one I should love in this world. The title track 'IDOL' is a celebration of self love (that's why the mv is brighter and more colourful compared to fake love) with lyrics like "You can't stop me loving myself". The series end with song 'Answer: Love Myself' and lyrics "You've shown me i have reasons i should love myself, Me of yesterday, me of today, and me of tomorrow (I'm learning how to love myself), with no expectations, it's all me". I was so happy that they didn't just say Love Yourself but made us go through the whole phase of being in this unrealistic love then realising it was all fake and that the person is losing himself trying to be the perfect version of themselves and then ended it with the message of loving yourself before loving someone else. They literally took us through a whole journey than just saying the typical 'you should love yourself'. This journey felt more relatable because bts members had their own insecurities which they were able to overcome and love themselves during the release of these albums. We army and bts went through this journey of self love together. I loved your reaction btw. I do recommend watching the explanation video because the visuals of the mv aren't just for artistic purpose but like you said, they tell a story

I think a lot of ARMYs conveniently forget that some of messaging of this song can be directed at us. A lot of us claim we love BTS but are quick to bash them the second they do something WE didn't envision for them. You don't have to like every song but to proclaim that BTS has "changed" and "sold out" just because they didn't conform to the image you created for them sure sounds like fake love to me.

I love how you analyze the lyrics as you go, it really shows that are really paying attention to what message they stand for. Although I would recommend watching the music video first with no pauses, get a feel of the beat and observe the dance moves, and then watch the video again to get the lyrics and make commentary. BTS MVs rarely have CGI. There are shooting MVs that show the actual sets. Fake Love can be for others or for oneself. That wasn't a grim reaper, it was a coat rack. With a mask and a cloak hanging.

Suga is my bias and I'm glad you pointed out how fire Suga's rapping is! Also interesting that you mentioned Eminem who has historically been my fav rapper. Suga is the first rapper I have encountered who has been on that level for me. He has something special in the way that he expresses himself and makes you feel the story he is telling with his lyrics. His rap alias name is Agust D... should check out some of his solo work :)

Fake Love is mainly about them trying to love themselves, and trying to get over their fears. Jungkook is kind of, like the the "leader" who are helping them with facing their fears and loving themselves. When they sing "fake love" is purpose to represent how they are not truing loving themselves, and they feel like that is "fake" love since they're not showing real love to themselves. Does this make sense?? 12:51 You were close. I think that moment was purpose to represent Jungkook running out of time to help the other members. BTS has a storyline going on through their mvs and all the mvs are connected to each other. The storyline is divided into their mvs, webtoons, their game to make the whole BU which is the BTS universe. But there are some Albums that are not part of BU. You know, another thing I love about BTS music is how flexible their songs are. BTS don’t force the meaning of their songs to you but instead allow you give it your own meaning. I’ve seen different theories of Fake Love and I have mine. Although we all viewed the mv from different perspectives we ended up with the same point... And the child is trapped on his parents' dream, while he is actually changing the real him to make them happy. And the spittin' rapper, that's Suga, his rap name is August D. This MV is all real effects, it's insane to watch it again after knowing that. No CGI .

To me the most telling and consistent thing in the MV is during the choreography they each cover their ears, eyes and mouth. Which I interpret to mean, "don't say it, see it or hear it." Don't feel or expose your your true self or feelings - become a doll. So "who am I?" At the end, "Save me (I'm lost)." Ultimately, I see it as not being able to be their authentic selves or love in their own authentic and unique way - thus it's all Fake Love. The love they receive from fans - feels fake because they're just dolls, hiding their true selves. And any romantic love because again they can't be authentic in the world. Sad.

The way that I interpret the ending is that when you finally let go of the useless cause (the shadow pieces blowing away from his hands), it releases all the pent up emotions and frustrations (water and fire) which temporarily creates a landscape of destruction, but it's a relief (Suga's little smile in the face of the fire) and a cleansing (the spent water dripping in an empty chamber) that can now pave the way for a new future of independence (the lone up-reaching hand at the end), which altogether is the basic mechanism for healing. But that's just me. I think the song can be talking about any unhealthy relationship, including the ones with family members or even a harmful friendship. This song is perticularly about love relationship having a partner whose love is fake. In some aspects the we can relate it to the idol fan relationship but the whole song cannot be related to that.

You understand the lyrics from a surface standpoint but there are layers and a storyline that runs through many of their videos. To get the know the Bangtan Boys, you're falling into the rabbit hole like I did. There are so many layers to BTS.. there are surface visuals, storyline references, amazing lyrics that fit the MV their era/series(theme of albums) I think now is a good time to watch one of the guides. Who is BTS by Sugar and Spice gives a member breakdown, This is BTS by XCeleste gives a quick synopsis of the group their intent and The Most Beautiful Story of BTS by Asian Theory gives member breakdown and a historical journey including a complete album breakdown which was extremely helpful and a very entertaining guide. I think it will really help with understanding their intent. I never stan a group before them, I mean...I love Beyonce, MJ, Prince, Bruno but this group is very special and artistic geniuses and I don't throw that around easily. I'm ARMY and proud. Oh! I'm so happy you dropped another video about BTS so soon - I had so much fun watching your reactions to them! Their "love songs" are not about the romantic type of love - usually, the meaning of their song is more universal (can be romance, friendship, family, relationships in general) For example, in song "I Need You" they sing "I need you girl" but as far as I know the lyrics were supposed to go "I need you friend" since the story of MV part of Bangtan Universe - the story of 7 friends who grow apart - and were changed since "girl" sounded better and was more prone to reach an audience. Thank you for paying attention to the lyrics, and the meaning behind those songs - when you reach the song "Blood, Sweat, and Tears" your video might be 40 minutes long (cause this one is so rich with symbolism and cultural references). Just so you know - Fake Love has a lot of amazing live stages, I hope you will check some of them soon since they are just incredible (in general I would recommend you to react to a song and its performances). Oh, and besides MVs, BTS other tracks from their albums are so worth listening to. And one more thing cause I don't want to bother you with a long comment - through some of MVs, BTS have storyline called BU (Bangtan Universe) - basically, it is a story about friendship, loss of youth, growing up, and finding your place in the world. The first album “Love yourself: Her” is about finding a love that seems like it’s meant to be, in the next album “Love yourself: Tear” you come to realize how broken and damaging this relationship is and in the final album “Love Yourself: Answer” you discover self love. BTS doesn’t mess around when it comes to their work, it’s absolutely beautiful and mind blowing

The first one which was 'Love Yourself : Her' with the title track 'DNA', tell a story about they thought that they've found their true love. Thinking the love they've found were a destiny. But, that love is actually a fake love. now we get in to the next album which was 'Love Yourself : Tear' with the title track 'Fake Love'. They finally realized that the love they've thought was their true love, was actually a fake love. On to the next album which was 'Love Yourself : Answer' with the title track 'IDOL', they finally found the real answer. And the answer was to loving themselves. They finally realized that true love was started by loving themselves (and this can apply to us too).

I'm super curious what would you think about BTS concert playlist. Because let me tell you "Love Yourself" tour (with Fake Love as the center of the story) is MASTERPIECE. The whole concert is telling us a story about love, starting with a lovely but a little bit naive perception of love then moves to a more mature side of love with the realization it is not perfect feeling and can cause a lot of pain and suffering when approached with a bad mindset, to a conclusion, that you have to first love yourself before you love other people. The concert consists of songs by the whole group, solo songs from each member of BTS, and unit songs - and I never experienced such cohesive narration during any other concert besides BTS.

The moment you mentioned Inception... I was like THIS GUY GETS IT. This video is part of a whole story line that BTS has created and Jin is living the same day over and over while another member V is dreaming it all. 👍👍👍 Edit* All the special effects were real and yes they all keep dieing in the story line. Jin keeps repeating the same day trying to save all the membets

One of the great things about this song is it’s written so that this could be about many different types of relationships. I was still pretty new to BTS when this video dropped, and it was the first one that really hit me in a deep place. For me, it was about my relationship with my parents, and how I was raised to be whoever they thought I should be in order to receive their love.

I love your take on this. Your insights are spot-on! You are going to *love* this journey! BTS songs have so many layers of meaning that everything you're seeing is probably there. I've been here almost 3 1/2 years - Fake Love was the first release I was around for - and you've given me ideas I haven't thought about before. Keep it up! It's beautiful watching other people discovering BTS, and you seem like the kind of intelligent, analytical fan who can fully appreciate their artistry. There are mv "shooting" (behind the scenes) videos which you will enjoy, and there are also "dance practice" and performance videos which will allow you to see their power-packed choreography in it's entirety (which is *not* shown in the mv's).

When I first heard "Fake Love," I thought of them and ARMY and I was concerned because I don't ever want them to feel they can't be themselves for us. Maybe that was never meant in the song but I could see how it could at least be one of the inferences because we put them on so high a pedestal and that is so hard to live up to sometimes.
