It's not a reference to anything, the song does'nt have a double meaning. The piano is not an idea disguised to describe something else. Actually his first love is the piano, his first love is music. He has mentioned it many times.
His first love is the piano. Its music. He mentioned how he had grown taller than the piano, and he used imagery to show how even when he was going through everything, music was there for him. (I'm not that good at explaining-_-)
MUSIC, MUSIC, is his first love. The piano was his first introduction to music and his first love. Through out his struggles with mental health issues, what has always gotten him through is the music. So deep. Min Yoongi being raw honest and vulnerable. Yoongi starts out talking about and talking to the 🎹 piano. Then his voice changes and the piano talks to Yoong, don't worry even without me you'll make it kid, whenever you comeback I'll be waiting, etc. Then the voices speak/ sing over each other and harmonize as Yoongi returns to the piano/music vowing never to leave. Complex, deep beautiful. This song made Yoongi my bias forever 💜.
He raps about his brown piano, describing the relationship in a chronological manner. In his interview in WINGS CONCEPT BOOK, he said, “it’s a song that contains many meanings. ‘First Love’ refers to the piano I played when I was young and also the only friend I had. I cried a lot when recording the track. In the second half, where I explode the feelings, I kept tearing up.”
I feel like we all as community should stop assuming that love is just based on one person to another there are so many shapes and sizes to love , love is a bigger feeling than just a partner 🧘🏻♀️
THANK YOU! i thought he'd catch the connection between the song title and his brown piano a lot sooner, considering the amount of times the piano was mentioned :')
this song made me cry because his first love is music, the brown piano. his first love has shaped who he is today. his passion for making music has been deeply rooted since his early days. First Love is part of Wings album, an album that talked about pain in adolescence and each member had a solo track, which explains the vulnerable lyrics.
This might be one of the most beautiful songs Yoongi ever wrote. He was supposed to write a song about first love and this masterpiece about his love for music. His production on this blows me away and he included backing tracks subtly of him crying while recording its intense.
Remember, BTS rarely talks about actual girls that they knew personally in their music. It does happen occasionally, especially in their early music, but for the last several years, any love song they put out is almost always with ARMY being their love interest. In this case, when he says "brown piano", as others have said, he actually means a brown piano. His first introduction to Music, the love of his life. All of Yoongi's mix tape songs are raw, honest, and starkly vulnerable and this song is no exception. I love the fact that he puts so much emotion into the lyrics of this song that it gets people in the feels, even without being able to understand hardly a single word. It's one of those songs that, to me, prove that music is the universal language.
When SUGA was a trainee before his debut, he injured his shoulder in a car accident during a delivery part-time job. However, he hid his shoulder injury from the company for fear of being kicked out of the team, and developed chronic shoulder pain that was not treated in time. After his debut, his shoulders became a symbol of the hard journey he endured and walked through. In a recent Vlive, SUGA said that the pain improved after shoulder surgery, but the range of shoulder movements was more limited than that of the other shoulder.
he's switching back and forth between his point of view and the piano's point of view. like you can see in parts of the song that is his piano talking to him and encouraging him, not through actual words, but through music. the personification that yoongi uses in this song is so moving.
Appreciate the video. But Suga is talking about his first love of music and the piano. In the middle of the song, the piano ‘sings’ and ‘speaks’ to Suga. You can hear the change in Suga’s voice when this happens. Later in the song, when Suga’s voice is layered, Suga and the piano harmonize together.
if youve been listening and analyzing bts’ songs, youll know that it’s not always and it’s rarely about a girl. it’s either about their work, their passion in music, their love for armys, their love for their group, their family.
He performed this back in 2017 for the "Wings" concert. It used to be on YT but they took it down and it can be found on the concert dvd - I bought this because his concert performance of First Love was one of the most beautiful performances I've seen, not just of BTS but any performance. Live it is so emotional, hard to not feel it deeply the way he performed it.
I was screaming at the screen. The constant reference to the piano is because it's an ode to his piano. He's referring to the importance of music in his life. I'm sure you've recognized that by now but a follow up would be great. I'd love to see you reinterpret the lyrics with that frame of mind.
We all have loved something that we grow to hate when life breaks our heart, only to go back to it because it is an intrinsic part of our souls. I love this song but cannot listen to it, the tears just start flowing.
Yes, as other comments say, yoongi is refering to the piano, music. And there is a lot of anger, sorrow, pain in the song bc he had a really hard past when he wanted to follow the path of music. That's why he said he even resent it, but his piano, his music was always there when he came back The song is really good! you should look for a concert performace. I really wanted to cry the first time I heard him live
Love for music and his piano - it is where he expresses the best. The piano was where he fell in love with music, music is his constant, stable companion, his love. He always wanted to be a producer and now he is.
worried the description they gave was lacking context 😭 his first love was the piano/music !! this was a very emotional piece for him i cried a lot the first time i heard this relating as a creative :(
Really love yoongi music 😭😭 anyways he is using 2 diff tone of voice representing him and the piano its like conversation or something correct me if I'm wrong. But yeahh yoongi is genius 💜
no, you're right! there's a slight change in tonality between the piano's "voice" and yoongi's voice in the song, and i think it's so beautiful that he personified his piano in such a way!
i'm not attached to music in the way yoongi is, but damn i can't help but tear up almost every single time i listen to this song. he personified his brown piano and even portrayed his dialogue w his piano in the middle of the song where the piano said it will always be there for him and will find him in other shapes/forms, whenever he needs him, even if yoongi had neglected it at some point. yoongi's love for music is so pure, i'm so happy he's able to have the creative freedom to do whatever he wants in terms his work w music, let it be composition or production.
What I got from it even without the lyrics the first time I heard it was his love for music because he’s gone through so much just to pursue in that direction and he began to hate music because he hated himself (just my opinion idk if I’m accurate) but nothing will take away his love for music so he always had conflict with himself. And that’s what’s so powerful about the song because just like YOU said, you can take the brown piano that is his weakness and replace it with your own weakness and how you are just yearning for something but can’t reach it or you have and you walked away from your passion. It’s such an emotional song and I’m so thankful I own the album with that track. The album is “you never walk alone” and whenever that song comes on it’s hard for me to skip it. If I’m happy I skip it lol cuz I wanna stay happy but that song just makes me cry every time 🥲
I took it to mean he was tali8ng about music. Like he thought his career was over when he crushed his shoulder in the accident. He didn't even tell his company until later that he go in an accident.
While your interpretations tend to be excellent, I find nine times out of ten when reactors introduce a woman into their BTS interpretations they then attempt to develop interpretations which are more their own than what the artist is conveying. You introduced the concept of woman so early in the song that you did not in my opinion allow the lyrics to tell their story. It had not been developed at that point. Instead, you kept trying to fit a woman into the storytelling never really sensing a small boy's first love might not be a female, but rather sense of self through the creation of music. I love your reactions, but this became a tad painful as it felt you were more listening to yourself speak than allowing the music to inform you what to say.
i agree! it was a little disappointing as i usually rlly enjoy linton's reactions and am always excited for his interpretation of the song has he never fails to dish new perspectives.
when reacting to any bts songs please dont always assume immediately that its a song for a girl cuz they barely make a song about relationships for a girl. they always talk about love for music, love for their fans and brotherly love for their bandmates.
And this is the song where Yoongi made us all cry! There are a few songs that makes me so emotional, all agust D , “ nevermind “ and “ the last” he is amazing at conveying emotions with his voice and lyrics!!
