Because I'm a glutton for punishment, and because I felt this movie really needed an analytical explanation in between all of the funny memes... I watched Tariq Nasheed's Buck Breaking movie.
I wouldn't recommend it.
It's just as bad as you imagined. Further, it made me take some time to assess how and why this movie found an audience. What does it say about cis-het black men, hotep culture, and some of the unique elements of black homophobia? I try to process it as best i can on this episode of the Black Media Breakdown.

I lost two really close friends to the myth that white men created black gay guys to destroy the black community. Because I'm gay, they told me I wasn't even a part of the black struggle anymore. This was coming from 2 str8 dudes I'd smoked with (weed) daily for like 2 years straight, using my room as a studio or dueling each other with my old Yu-Gi-Oh! cards for hours every other day. This happened like 2018 and we haven't spoken since. Both knew of my sexuality the entire time. The hotep shit came like a virus and when the illness sank into them, they turned on me like an ice skater.

I've heard a lot of men first got interested in feminism when they had daughters. They sound like their kids are their only venue of having empathy with girls and women at all. You're the first person I hear about getting into feminism because of having sons. It seems a lot more wholesome.
@LoneWulf278
@LoneWulf278 3 года назад
It’s just weird how literally everyone on the planet is birthed by a female body, but for some reason, the female that THEY created is what finally motivated some understanding towards female/women’s issues. 🤦🏾‍♀️ I’ve never heard a woman say that they protest the prison industry or other men’s issues simply because they have sons. The usually don’t even have any children.
@antonioscendrategattico2302
@antonioscendrategattico2302 3 года назад
I personally think it's less about empathy and more about being forced to confront the issue in a personal way, in a way that feels real. When you hear about something on the news it just feels less real than having to deal with it in person, and people tend to create a narrative based on what they already know and believe. Having reality thrown right in your face can break through the layers of rationalization that we build.

The intelligence and critical analysis here is refreshing. One can be a strong man without crushing anything that deviates from their definition of masculinity. There is more than one way to be a man. Gay people exist. Anyone who is so pressed about what LGBTQ+ people do in their bedrooms are usually just gay and jealy themselves. No person who has any ounce of self-confidence and is living their truth gets so bent out of shape about people with different sexual orientations.

This is a genuinely excellent video. I'm glad I found your channel as a fellow ex-hotep. I'm a little bit younger than you and agree with 99.9% of what you said. The ONLY quibble I have is about when you talked about how hotep homophobia is not churchy. The one thing I would point out is that a big part of hotep ideology is wrapped up in biblical origin mythology (for example, the Hebrew Isrealite ideology), Kemetic spiritual revivalism, as well as in the Nation of Islam and its derivatives (5%ers etc.). The general hotep obsession with Ancient Egypt/Kemet (and that region of the world more broadly) has a lot to do with it's presence in Abrahamic religious texts. So while their homophobia may not be directly derived from Protestant theology, their playbook is DEEPLY rooted in Abrahamic ideas of gender and sexuality. It is easy to write it off as a subconscious desire for inclusion into the patriarchy, but its a bit deeper than that. There's a religious (and sometimes quasi-religious) basis for it as well that cuts across all Abrahamic religions as well as in the hotep interpretation of Ancient Egyptian religion. The only other thing you didn't talk about (and perhaps it's a subject for another video that I'd love to watch as well), is the influence of prison culture on mainstream African American culture for cis-het black men. As we understand the carceral state to be an extension of slavery, we should be aware and sensitive to the fact that a significant amount of black men have been through incarceration and, given the prevalence of rape and sexual assault in that institution (at least historically), it stands to reason that their views on homosexuality may be informed by that. I suspect that a big part of what motivates the Buck Breaking apocrypha is a desire to disclose what has happened to a significant number of black men at the hands of corrections officers (and other inmates at the tacit behest of the institution) in recent years from a "safer" historical vantage point. That is of course NO justification for queerphobia, but in addressing the homophobia I was taught growing up, I became very aware at how often authority figures constructed homosexuality as it pertained to black men as an intrinsic part of prison and how unique the prevalence of that version of homophobia was in black communities. When I have tried to help other cis-het black men address and deconstruct their homophobia, that theme always comes up; it touches a deep nerve. Because of how common incarceration is for black men, in some of us there's a crosswiring or conflation of a valid fear of sexual assault in prison with an irrational fear of LGBTQ people. It's of course incorrect, but it also presents a HUGE opportunity to build bridges and empathy. Once I cleared that part up in myself, I was off to the races (pardon the pun). LGBTQ people are not existential rapists, and they actually face an increased risk of sexual assault in prison (and in general society). I simply point out that carceral strain of homophobia because homophobia in black communities has such a unique cultural, social, and historical context which can make it harder to address if not accounted for.
@FDSignifire
@FDSignifire 3 года назад
that's a great point to explore. I don't think it explains the whole of it but it definitely connects to the irrational fear of being emasculated. Prison rape and being "punked" in jail is a long standing spectre in the minds of black men, especially in my age group and it speaks to soooo many other insecurities. I'll definitely find a way to investigate this more in the future. Thanks so much for this useful critique!

I think it has had just as much an affect on us as slavery and Jim Crowe. It has also influenced government and policies. There are huge gaps in the way basic civil rights are observed for white people vs those of black people..Think about stop and frisk. 9:50 "Paracelsian corpse" is the term Dr Wesley Muhammad used that you couldn't seem to find. Paracelsus's principles of similitude and contrariety stated: "To cure a disease of a certain intensity, a substance of similar nature but the opposite intensity should be administered." There's a book by Richard Sugg that goes into it in detail called: "Mummies, Cannibals and Vampires: The History of Corpse Medicine from the Renaissance to the Victorians." Humoral/Galenic and Paracelsian medical theories were the foundations of medieval European medicine. The 2006 movie, "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" (novel by Patrick Süskind) loosely portrays these medieval beliefs of trying to take up the life force of a dying person, in the case of the movie, young women.

@Markie Mark not even close bro “black supremacy” isn’t a fucking thing😂white people introduced themselves to us. They were the ones from the beginning with malicious intent this is how they took over we were too nice but anyway I don’t believe “black supremacy” is a thing when white people involve themselves with our civilizations and took over our social status lol there’s no such thing as “black supremacy”

I am in a similar journey right now and it's how I ended up watching your channel in the first place. I appreciate how much background and history you give in these videos. It gives a great starting point to start to understand some of the wider issues going on that I've been more or less blind to or dismissive of.

Thank you for educating yourself prior to speaking on the LGBTQ+ community. Most of us have nothing against straight men and are simply trying to live our lives in peace like everyone else. We have no agenda other than to be treated as human beings with the understanding that who we are was not and is not a choice. No one in their rational mind would make such a decision willingly.

Thank you, again for bringing sense to this whole topic. I've certainly witnessed the circling, spiraling, and straw-grasping of this particular segment of black men who will talk about anything (even extraterrestrials) before they will acknowledge or address the patriarchy. They'll talk about child support and mass incarceration til they're blue in the face but in their minds, no other truths or perspectives exist. It's sad and it does the black community a huge disservice. At any rate, I appreciate the channel and the content!

This explains a lot (white woman here for reference) I had a friend who was a straight black guy who was just like the people you were talking about. He talked constantly about wanting to "get with a girl" and "why won't girls give him a chance?" ect. I and a friend of mine once spent, I shit you not 8 hours straight trying to explain to him why his shitty attitude (we put it much nicer) wasn't helping him date and that he needed to treat women well. In one ear out the other. Honestly what made me stop talking to him was he was trying to get with me and would pull the most juvenile shit. Grabbing my ass after a hug, talking about how I was dressed nice but it was a shame I didnt have a bigger butt, talking about how the holocaust wasn't that bad because he was jealous that I spent time with another friend (I'm Jewish and he knew it). He got so toxic and drove a lot of people away. I still feel bad because when we met he was a good guy, but he just went down this path that wasn't leading anywhere good and resisted any attempt to help him. I really hope this video can help someone like him before they start going down that path.

That last 7 minutes… I’ve got you by 10 years, and I completely see it. Completely. I used to get into hot fire conversations in the barber shop - not only because I didn’t want to stay silent for the insanity, but I also didn’t want my sons to hear and internalize the bullshit for themselves. All you can do is to raise your sons the right way and keep being a light. Even if that light doesn’t literally overcome all of the darkness, you’ve made it a brighter place for someone.

My view is that any time we are looking to grow as humans, and pass that growth down to future generations it can feel very lonely at times. That no one else quite sees what we're doing, let alone are looking to do it for themselves. I think that's how most projects of the self feel when we are doing them well.

And like with your Breaking Bread video - you talk about the importance of understanding other points of view and not alienating people you disagree with by denigrating them/ yelling at them. you (as usual!) handled a batch of really complex and sensitive issues extremely well. i think your into in the way that you state your own personal experience in navigating black masculinity as well as sometimes the mindset of toxic masculinity especially stands out as a great way of establishing the topics and your knowledge of them. it's always interesting and informative to listen to people speaking from experience and observation. black men are treated differently and often worse than white men, so the feeling and experience of being dehumanized/ oversexualized or in general having power and autonomy being policed and ripped away is very real. it's just, as you say, the fault of white/ patriarchal/ imperial systems and not the fault of a decline in the forced subservience and silence of black women and lgbt people.
