Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
Leather gear: www.masonleath...
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballi... that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7-10’ from the shooting bench, depending on the cartridge and muzzle blast.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 10’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

These shoot under an inch at 100 yards out of my CVA Scout. So far I have shot six bucks with them all ranging from 170-180lbs and a hand full of does. From quartering to to perfect broad side double lung they have performed great. Longest “track” has been less than 40 yards. Most fall over within 10 yards. All shots under 100 yards.

Thanks Mr. Mason Leather Man, appreciate the test. I still use these on hogs and they do fantastic. I don't understand the velocity readings, I have never seen them that slow in any testing, very strange. I usually see about 100 fps or so loss from a 20" to a 16" barrel. I will continue to use the Deer Season XP ammo as I bought HUNDREDS of them when they were cheap a few years back.

I have to agree. I just ran these across my chronograph yesterday and I got an average right at 2240 out of my Ruger ranch compact. Hornady 170's were right at 2280 average so I was close to your readings on those. Mason thanks for these videos/tests and keep them coming!

3 years , 3 deer . 26 " penetration is phenomenal . Let that sink in . 2 of the 3 shot had a HUGE exit wound . Completely through . The third bullet lodged in opposie side shoulder , over half inch expansion .

Used this rd since first year in production. Works well except doesnt always pass thru a deer and leave a bloodtrail. But Im 7 for 7 with it only one deer ran over 75yds and have taken several in the 180-200lb range. Great load, great caliber.

I have also had great experiences with the 350 legend but I have limited it to 150 and in. At 200 yards it just doesn't have the energy I like to see for deer. 1000ft.lbs is my cut off.

Idk why but my gun really favored the 150 grain xp. So because of that I try not to put a bunch of different rounds thru my rifle. Idk why but I try to only feed the ammo the gun likes if that makes sense. And when I say that I mean the gun is super clean shooting. And very accurate very consistent. Not sure if the FPS because I have no chrono graph but as far as hitting the target at a variety of ranges and burning clean leaving the gun running smooth with very little foulin

I have three 350Legend rifles. CVA Cascade and a Ruger American with the longer barrel both averaged right around 2400fps. My AR upper with a 18" barrel comes in at 2250fps. The HSM rounds with Hornady CoreLock seems to be the best from my AR but the pther two guns like the Deer Season XP.

Daughter took her first buck with this load last weekend. Pass through heart/lung shot, 11 pointer 👍. I know first hand that the 357 magnum is a caliber that will continue to utilize barrel length to great effect. The 350L is a stretched limo version of the classic 357. Can't help but wonder if likewise, it wouldn't shine more out of a 20" barrel or if it is just loaded slower than stated. We All Know A Manufacturer Would Never Fudge Their Numbers. 🙄 Would They? 😆

@hardball107
@hardball107 4 месяца назад
Agree completely with your comments. The 350L is not a powerhouse and IMHO it's marginal for whitetail hunting. I had a 357 Maximum in a T/C Super 16 pistol back in the day. I'm a reloader and my loads were very close to your results with the stock ammo, a little slower because of the 16" barrel but within 100fps and I was using 158gr XTP's for hunting. After 2 deer lost and 3 deer tracked requiring a second shot with solid shoulder hits within 100 yards I sold that barrel. I did buy a Ruger American in 350L because I needed a rifle to break in my grandkids, something with lighter recoil they could shoot cast loads out of, in other words cheap ammo. Shooting cast and powder coated Lee 358-158-rf bullets resized to .355" @ 1755fps it's a great cartridge for learning and tons of fun against water filled beer cans, with a 9mm 147gr XTP it would be a great defense round in an AR so I decided to take it hunting 2 seasons ago. I was pretty disappointed, 2 deer hit under 100 yards with thru and thru shoulder shots, tracking all afternoon for a harvest it didn't impress me and brought back all those memories of long ago. I also have a 16" Ruger American in 450 Bushmaster which I believe is the champion deer harvester of them all inside of 250 yards. 10 seasons, 12 deer, only 2 took more than 2 steps and those dropped in less than 15 yards. All I can say is put your big boy pants on, tighten your belt and spend your money on a 450. The 350 has it's place for smaller or recoil sensitive shooters, my 14 year old granddaughter loves mine but maybe the 400L would be a better choice in that regard, the jury is still out on that one.

I can confirm 450B is an absolute sledgehammer compared to 350L. Just like you said, 350L is easy and loads of fun to shoot, if I were to hunt with it I’d be very particular about the ammo I’d use and shots I’d take.

Hey man - digging your videos. Recently subscribed and going through past videos. Have the .300 BO Ruger Ranch and was shocked at accuracy - about 1” with 110 grain (however found them a little light on deer last year). I think it would be helpful to have a 3 shot group for accuracy with your ammo reviews. Keep on with the great content - howdy from Fredericksburg Texas!

I took 1 nice 8pt at 150 yards. Just behind the shoulder, good damage to lungs and liver. Bullet stopped under the skin of the opposite shoulder, no pass through. Buck ran about 60 yards. I think the 350L is a 150 yard max hunting round. It's not a powerful round for sure but it will get the job done if you realize it's limitations.

These are GREAT. I am in the midst of my annual analysis if what ammo we should use for my pops, son's .350s (I use a .450). The xps just dont exit and often entry is smaller than dime. So...no blood. Does kill them. But if track is needed... trouble! Any chance you are going to publish all of these in a matrix/summary? I am leaning towards Barnes and would like you to try the Bear Creek Ballistics... But would love to see them all compared side by side...
@nikos6220

Totally agree with TexasLeverGunner, the low speed is probably a feature and not a bug. Points to Winchester actually testing their stuff and deciding to reduce the speeds to cope with a poor projectile design. But you get what you pay and this stuff will surely do the job on a good hit.
@masonoutdoors_masonleather
@masonoutdoors_masonleather 11 месяцев назад
If so they’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t, because if it’s on purpose then the numbers on the box are outright lies. Based on the full breadth of results across the board on all Winchester ammo tested so far, it seems a lot more like bad QC to me than anything purposeful, especially because multiple people have confirmed these won’t even cycle in an AR (and 350L ARs are prevalent if not a primary platform for the 350L).
@nikos6220
@nikos6220 11 месяцев назад
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather bad QC on that level would be even more worrisome. But probably you are right. Another cool channel has a recent video on a squib out of a 400 Legend. Seems the powder was contaminated. Good thing he recognized it.

Maybe the the velocity was low due to temp? One thing I see in the reloading books for 350legend is a lot of loads for pistol powders that are not temp stable powders. Win may be saving some money by going with old stand buy powders in this load, and with powders that are not temp stabilized you have to load to a bit lower pressure for safety. AR chambers get hot, and black rifles get hot in the sun. So they may have to back down on the charge, for safety. Then in a cold chamber you are not getting up to full allowable peak pressure?
@masonoutdoors_masonleather

It was over 100 degrees when I fired these and I fired all other 350 Legend loads tested in the same few days, same temperatures, nothing else was this slow. Several people have confirmed this load won’t cycle in their ARs at all. However you cut it, these did not measure up velocity wise to factory claims.
