Bucktailing the Rips - Non-Stop Striper Action!

There is nothing more disheartening than fishing side by side with someone, using the same tools and techniques and getting badly outfished. I mean like 20 to 0 over two trips. That's what happened with me and John Skinner where I miserably failed at his very unique style of targeting stripers off some of the rips in Eastern Long Island.
They say the third time is the charm and it was for me on this day. This is actually Part 1 of this epic trip all focusing on the "jig the bucktail just off the bottom" technique (someone will need to come up with a better name for this). Part 2 will be published next week and will focus on only topwater action.

crushed barbs will definitely make you a better fisherman and you'll drop a few, especially schoolies who really thrash. on those heavy mustad hooks they use on bucktails you've still got a heavy shank and some meat left on the barb anyway and they get good hooksets. great habit to get into. a crushed bucktail will almost never hurt the fish. good trip boys.

There you go, all you needed was a private lesson from the master ! It’s not easy to catch stripers on bucktails, I’ve yet to have any success with them, l guess I need a private lesson too . Thanks.

I mean Tim, I literally did two trips in the week before this with him doing the same exact thing and all I caught was a spider crab lol🤣🤣🤣 He caught at least 15 during the same two trips

They say stripers have a high mortality rate from catch and release It is suggested not to lift the fish out of the to release

You know, I have heard this too, but the only time I’ve actually seen dead stripers floating on the water is off Montauk. I can’t imagine the way they swim off that we are causing any type of mortality. I believe the ones in Montauk may be the results of the stress involved with being reeled in under a fast troll

grabbing the rod up high like that is a big no no, only a matter of time till your rod will break that way.

I understand that you have a rod you would like to promote. But would you recommend the tsunami trophy slow pitch for this type of striper fishing? Just looking for something more within my budget. I know skinner used to use that rod striper fishing. Just curious if the action is similar. Great video, I love bucktailing! You nailed it.
@jiggingjerks

Absolutely. That has an incredibly soft tip and I think would work well. Skinners line of rods are less expensive as well and he has a bunch that would be excellent for this type of fishing

@jiggingjerks

I don’t. Never have. I enjoy sea bass, fluke and tog in that order out of the normal fish we catch. Monkfish and cod are my two favorites but can’t say so those are caught in abundance
