Buddy Rich - Love For Sale 

I'm 52 and I'm ashamed to say I never heard of Buddy Rich until this day. Come to find out, he's the baddest drummer in the world and a US Marine Judo Instructor. That's an amazing cross section of life right there. Semper Fi.

Everyone seems to focus on his solos, but he was incredible at driving the band. He could swing like few others. A one of a kind phenomenon

the world has had Mozart.. Da Vinci.....Ali.....Einstein.....and of course BUDDY RICH

If I had to pick the greatest big band charts of all time, This version of Love for Sale would be in the top 3.

I see posts sometimes in a Classic Rock page. I can appreciate why they post the questions," Who was the best drummer"? You'll hear, Moon, Bonham, Ginger Baker". And I'll think to myself, "If they only knew..."

There are tons of really really great drummers in all fields of music and it’s hard to state who was truly the greatest. That is until you listen to the immortal Buddy Rich. Many drummers especially in rock surround themselves with massive sets, multiple basses, innumerable toms, cymbals and snares. Yet one look at Buddy’s set reveals one snare, one tenor tom, two floor toms, a single bass, 3-4 cymbals, a mini splash and a hi hat. That’s it ! Yet he made that sing volumes around anyone else. Truly the drummer to top all drummers. RIP Buddy Rich. You are truly missed and will always be remembered.

Santana made a point in an interview I recall watching, saying some musician's have it, and some don't. Buddy had it.

Having a drummer who can cook like that, is a big band's heart and soul.

This man was the greatest drummer in the world for so many reasons, and to me, this version really says it. Solos aside, the way Buddy played time was like no other. The shear magic of his left hand, which he regards as hard work, not magic, spoke so much to so many. His playing and his sound was almost a form of sorcery, a force in itself. His kick drum was like a small atomic blast, as we listen to the first few seconds of the vid, and think, "Here we go.." it's like riding the Cyclone. RIP, my man.

Pete Myers' arrangement of Porter's ballad was a staple of Rich's songbook. And boy, does it swing!

There has been many great drummers to come along since the era of modern music (i.e., jazz, blues, rock, soul, etc.) arose. With no disrespect to any of those great drummers, there's no one you could comfortably put above Buddy Rich. The man was a drumming wizard, like Art Tatum was a wizard at the piano. That is rarefied air.

Saw him live at a royal command performance. Absolutely amazing .

That single stroke roll to pick up the last few bars is barbaric. Wow!!!!

He was a tap dancer! Morphed into the greated drummer ever!!!!

Still fascinates me that he is directing the band as well as playing. If you watch closely his stick movements as they point over his shoulder for a trumpet solo etc!

Ive just been watching the greats from the Golden Era of drumming. # No one comes close to Buddy. Watch out, however, for a 19 American drummer called Greyson Nekrutman. He’ll be the next big thing in drumming. A combination of Buddy, Gene Krupa and Sonny Payne..

I love to hear him just sit in the pocket. every crash an expression , separating A from B , DC al C . The man was marvellous. Known to be a hot head in myth, but always in class on the Riser. Cole never sounded so good . hey , and I’m just a rock guy .

Well, greatest ever...? Not to me. He was very good, yes, of course, among the best in the world at that time, but there were many others drummers that loved me much more than him. Personal taste - he plays on or slightly behind the beat and that is not where the breathless thrills are in jazz, especially with very fast tempos like this. You wanna take my breath away, play a little against the beat - a bit ahead of it, yank me into the tempo. But I know I am probably a Lone Ranger here and so I am NOT arguing with anyone! GOAT? Is anyone ever that at anything? That aside, he was a bad ass, for sure!

True he was a phenomenal drummer, but at the same time he was a really rude and arrogant SOB with cutting tongue and acid manner. Disliked by many of those who knew and worked with/ for him. A story goes as follows.... After he died, a fellow musician called his home and asked to speak to Buddy, his wife explained that Buddy was no more, and the ex-band member rang off. A few minutes later the same guy called again and asked to speak to Buddy, his wife said 'you called earlier and I told you he was dead, why are you calling again?' 'I just like hearing you say Buddy's dead' the ex-band member replied.

Lovely track, but why does BUDDY piss around on the hi-hat for 30 seconds, before setting the correct tempo??

That's got to be Lin Biviano on lead trpt. Terrible, as on all recordings I've ever heard. Couldn't play without a mic.

Not a good band...especially lead trumpet...absolutely awful at the end.

If this wasn't Buddy Rich, nobody would care. The band sounds like a good college band from Berklee which is mostly what they are. There is nothing special about the musicians. The sound of the electric bass totally sucks. This is all about promoting Buddy Rich's incredibly massive ego.
