*****AFTER THE INITIAL RESPONSE FROM TONY SAYING HE HAD ABSOLUTELY SET UP HIS TENT CORRECTLY. I TOOK IT EVERYTHING WAS IN ORDER AS TONY HAS BEEN A WILD CAMPER FOR QUITE SOME YEARS NOW AND WHO AS OWNED THE SCRAP 1 FOR SOME TIME.
THIS WAS NOT THE CASE.
TONY EXPLAINS IN HIS VIDEO THAT VIEWERS WHO HAVE WATCHED MY VIDEO HAVE POINTED OUT NUMEROUS ERRORS MADE BY HIM WHILE SETTING UP HIS SCRAP 1.
TONY HAS ADDRESSED THESE ERRORS IN HIS VIDEO. LINK POSTED BELOW.*****

Budget OEX Tent OUT PERFORMS Hilleberg Soulo Black label & Scarp 1 DESTROYED In Winter Storm
Yes, you READ that right, both tents of the highest order, the pinnacle of 4 season camping. Both were rendered unusable. (well the Hilleburg was ok really!!)
The plan was to experience our first extreme winter camp but the day had us beat before we even had the chance to unpack!
We set off early up the long and winding path that would take us to Scales Tarn high up on Blencathra. With minimal wind and the occasional hail shower, the weather was good!
As we ventured closer and closer to Sharp Edge the wind was starting to blow.
After negotiating the waterfall leading up to the Tarn we made our way around it to find our pitch for the night.
There isn't much flat ground on Scales Tarn so we were pushed into the top left corner. Setting up was proving difficult due to major gusts coming both from the end of the Tarn and also over Shape Edge.
After we had pitched it was time to just relax and take in our surroundings, bad mistake!
As I lie down to stretch my back an almighty gust of wind came down the Tarn. You could hear it like a Banshee screaming! it hit our tents with so much force that the Bobcat's roof came down and almost touched my nose.
As it sprung back into position I heard Chris yelling "It's over lads... Tony your Scarp is shredded"
Now, the plan was for me to jump into Tony's tent if my Bobcat failed, a place I could spend the rest of the night but now that boat had sailed. It was time to pack up!
It certainly goes to show that it's not always the best option to purchase the most expensive gear when there are tents like the OEX Bobcat out there. There are plenty of options on the market for people who want to still experience winter camping at its best with a tight budget as I have.
I hope you enjoy this video and please consider liking and subscribing to my channel. You would help me by sharing this video to like-minded people who are into our great outdoors.
Thank you,
Ant.

Can I just say a massive thank you for supporting this final test video of the OEX Bobcat 1 tent. Your comments have been amazing. I've read awesome accounts, heard from some very experienced Outdoorsmen/women and have been loving the advice given for extreme wild camping. Thanks you to all who have enjoyed the video and decided to sub to my channel. I really do appreciate it! Cheers, Ant.

I've owned a Scarp 1 and to think you can take it out in 70mph winds is just nuts, and then to pitch it up wrong is always going to end in tears.

@@SocialCampingthe crossover poles were not attached at the corners on one end as you can clearly see in the video during clips of the tent. An unfortunate accidental error which anyone could make. 😢

Despite the claims of the Scarp being a 4 seaon, and its extra cross over poles, having seen one up close in the hills and a few in the Alps i was always skeptical of the fabric and thought when the conditions got tough it would fail, it always felt to thin, flimsy. Interesting at 8min 30 though the rear shot shows the opposite end guyline totally slack, more so than just the other end failing? However this is the second one i have seen fail at pretty much the exact same point on the end guyline pull. I am not surprised that a cheaper tent, with a lower cross sectionand much thicker material survived. I am surprised to hear of your friend with the black label, having had a red label and used it everywhere from Iceland, Alaska to Patagonia, not to mention scottish winter in some horrendous conditions over the last 10 years ( when they were alot cheaper - but yea in conditions way in excess of those in this video) then i think he has been very unlucky with a possibly a "monday morning" pole, or his guy out point had failed? I have never had or seen a soulo fail and have seen them battered, firm believer in the Kerlon material, just not the insane pricing they now are. One thing for sure is Hilleberg will not quibble with him they will be more interested in how it failed and batch etc.Its also way better when there is alot more snow and you can start to bury them in a little. One thing i would say to your viewers is - ALWAYS CARRY A BIVY, at the very least even a cheap plastic orange one that can be bought for £5. When everything fails they will not and in severe temps, high winds and ice rain/snow it has a better chance of keep you alive when sometimes moving might not always be the safer option. Anyone wild camping in the UK mountains during winter, or even walking for the day should without exception carry a Bivy, accidents happen and things can change very quickly in the hills. The MRT prefer collecting people alive than body retrieval.

David, that was a pleasure to read my friend. Thank you for being so constructive. I've forwarded this message on to the lads. I'm hoping it might help with Tony's issue he is having with the Tarp Tent company. The owner as zero customer service skills and is digging his heals in. A really good read that. Sounds like you've done a fair bit of adventuring yourself? Yeah, definitely carry a bivi with you. I've been having a Hungarian bivi over my bag recently but on the last few occasions I'd chose not to take it🙄, it won't happen again. Thanks very much for watching and like I say you constructive comment. Cheers, Ant 👍

@@AntSurviveTheNight No problem apologies ive been away to reply but did subscribed to see how this goes and by chance found your mates video and replied directly there. I fundementally believe the Scarp tent is not a 4 season tent, or what we would typically classify as one. I mean to start with anything that doesnt seal down to the ground for one, doesnt have mesh inners that can be zipped up and closed etc your going to stuggle once that white stuff gets swirling. It has lots of design flaws and thats before we start talking about loading and stress points and guy anchors points. I'll be honest im not sure where the sudden craze for them came from given anyone whos had the opportunity to have a look at them in person that's benn around the block a few times can see the weak areas. Saving weight is one thing - generally doesnt work out well for you in true winter - it is what it is. Great summer tent though for sure - but then again better alternatives both cheaper and at this price point that can be pushed deep into the 3 season spectrum (more than this).
@AntSurviveTheNight
@AntSurviveTheNight Год назад
Hi again David, I can't comment as I've literally looked at it on the outside and stuck my head in it on another camp but that's it. It just generated a lot of interest I think because the "bigger" RU-vidrs bought into them. Now, I'm in the process of deciding if my Bobcat is 4 seasons, everything you mentioned above this tent as. The material is crazy thick and is lightweight. The only thing I've not managed to test is in snow but it ticks all the boxes if I did manage to get it out in a thick snow storm. I am convinced it would Survive The Night once again. Thanks mate for your input once again.

I have had a tent like the OEX very similar design to yours, but made by a company called "Hallmark." had it for 37 years and never let me down. Last year I used it for the last time, the centre pole broke, so I had to use a long piece of vine as a jury rig. It worked well. I have now retired the old girl. It could stand up to whatever the wind threw at it. Enjoyed the video. ATB cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀

Yup as I suspect the tear is that mid tie out The scarp tried to do what it’s designed to do flex in on the middle with cross poles supporting it but looks like due to middle tie out it tore as it was unable to flex in unfortunately. I’ve never used that mid tie point see no reason in general use with cross poles. Maybe it’s there if cross poles not used or for snow loading. But sadly it was probably too drum tight to flex and broke. Also the cross poles should be secured by the Velcro on the corners although I’m unsure if that new model has Velcro but it wasn’t secured by it if it’s there. But the tear I think is due to zero flex when a gust of wind hit it. I hope Henry can fix it.

I camped out there in winter a few years back in my Scarp 1 (older model). I’d checked the weather but foolishly not really looked at wind speeds. According to the Met Office it’d been 50ish mph winds with up to 67mph gusts. As I was pegging it out and putting the centre pole in, two of the corners ripped when a massive gust came rolling over the top of Sharp Edge. I managed to pitch it properly and put the crossover poles in but the two ripped corners were flapping like flags. A couple of times, like you, I had the tent flat to my face but in testament to the tent, it survived the night. Although I had very little sleep. I had all four corners reinforced at Alpkit in Keswick and it’s been brilliant ever since. Sadly I’m not sure this Scarp can be repaired in the same way. Hopefully there’ll be a good outcome 🙏🏼

Just goes to show, you don't need to pay silly money for a solid tent. Myself and my mate sat out 80mph gusts in Snowdonia in my Vango Chinook 200. The only other tent left standing was a mountain Hardwear trango 2, all the other campers had bailed during the night (we were at gwern gof uchaf campsite under Tryfan). I'm proud to say, that I had a hand in the design of the bobcat when I worked for go outdoors in Manchester, it started as the North ridge col, which I proceeded to butcher and modify, getting the weight down to 1.5kg, from my "prototype"....the col lite was born, which then became the bobcat 1. There's still some changes I'd make, the inner needs attaching to the outer at the rear guy out point, and could actually do with 2 guy out points. I also added a "tension band system" on the pole like Vango tunnel tents, but go outdoors couldn't include it due to patents/copyright etc. Great video, I hope your mates got sorted out by scarp and hilleberg👍🏻

Tents have focused so much on becoming lighter but they are a bit fragile these days. I use Vango tents and they’ve stopped using ripstop material in a lot of their tents which is frustrating as they are now more prone to ripping. The days of tents like the Force Ten Nitro with 5000mm HH are almost over. That tent stood up to everything even gales in Scotland where the rest of my campsite was destroyed. It never failed. Cheaper materials are the norm now and to be honest most ultra-light brands don’t excite me, in fact they are useless. I need a tough tent not a fancy lightweight gimmick. 2.5kg is fine you just have to save weight elsewhere. I long for an affordable tent like what Vango used to produce….😢 I still have my Nitro 200 and nothing has come close to it for the money. Hilleberg tents are just insanely priced and clearly out to alienate the average outdoors person. Their whole marketing is targeted at the professional outdoor adventure community so it feels elitist and puts me right off.

I like the old vango tents. Or I used too. I also have a BL soulo. I did some wheeler dealing over a period of 3 years. Saved up and sold some gear. Got one of the first ones out. Yea its a shame i think the Force 10 Brand has lost its way quite a bit - certainly from their hay day in the 70s and 80s back in the classic A Frame design (that weights a ton - my old mans tent that he and his climbing partner used to use back in the day). The last F10 i dought and still have is the Spindrift 300 and had that in some horrendous conditions back 10+ years ago. But then again your back up at that 5Kg weight and well with weight comes strength, that and a solid design that thing was rigid as hell especially as the storm passes over and wind directions change. For me the Hillebergs killed it with the Kerlon 1200 and 1800 fabrics and the Spindrift was relogated to a decent base camp tent for a seaon or two given its generous size inside for 2. Its sadly now just held in the collection - will have to take her out one of these fine weeks for old times sake ;-)!

That rip in the scarp was partially down to user error possibly not checking condition of guy out point before going on a very precarious camp, but also being in conditions it isn't massively designed for. The tents may say 4 season, but that only really means for holding in heat, withstanding slightly higher winds or able to take some snow loading. To take 70+mph winds it needs to be a specific expedition tent. I would have any normal tent out in anything over 50mph winds max. These conditions are savage but it's a good test for sure. Winds like that can take down the most sturdiest of tents when it is gusting. Stepping outside the comfort zones is good though and knowing the limits is good albeit annoying as both tents not cheap. Hilleberg will honour new broken poles no problem, but not sure on Scarp, hopefully though. Sorry to hear their gear failed as we all cherish our gear and love getting outdoors

People who buy these fancy expensive tents. I don’t know. 🤨 It was a crazy day that like. We never even got our packs out the car. Straight to the pub where we stayed 😂 dunno what to say about the scarp. Same thing happened to my old Nallo. It ripped like that. The peg got ripped out and it tore. But it was really old and the fabric was faded and weakened. It shouldn’t happen to a reasonably new tent. I hope Tony gets through to them. Shocking response. I’m getting a OEX tent now. Anyone want to buy a soulo 😂😂😂. Good little account of events mate. Send bobcats. Atb. 👍

It looks to me as though the crossing poles have not been correctly fitted. They are supposed to go through the grosgrain loop on the apex of the hoop and secured at the corners with the velcro loops. From your video it looks like the poles weren’t secured at any of those points. Maybe the excessive movement of the unsecured poles caused the rip. Additionally the roof panel lifter guy is incorrectly set up. It should be used in conjunction with a trekking pole as you can see in many videos on RU-vid. I don’t know whether that was an issue too.

Or ripped cos of the spines? It’s shocking. He’s taken it very well tho. Good for you on the bobcat tho.😅

I honestly have no idea how they can call the scarp a 4 season tent. The fabric is what, 20d? Sure it's silicone coated both sides which increases its strength but nothing is getting away from the fact that 20d and 30d fabrics are not going to work on tent structures like the scarp in strong winds. 20-30d fabrics work on tipi or mid style tents, as well as stuff like the Trailstar because those style shelters work WITH the weather, not against it like more dome like structures which often use brute force to stay up. With wind like you get in the UK you need a tent that works with the wind or is strong enough made that it can withstand such gusts. In other words, just buy a Trailstar 🤣
@AntSurviveTheNight
@AntSurviveTheNight Год назад
Hi mate, thanks very much for your comment. Well, according to the manufacturer he says it can withstand that kind of battering but unfortunately Tony did not set up the tent correctly which resulted in it failing like it did. Hi Pete, I've not heard of the NortentcVern 1, I'll have to look it up. The Scrap is a 3/4 season tent which I'm told is strong when set up correctly. Hey Ant - If I could offer some advice, the problem is not the tents, its the location you chose. I've spent many years camping in those areas and even with excellent gear, the wind hitting your tent will drive you crazy all night. You need to look for areas that are in the lee of the wind. This will make sure you don't fatigue the tent over time and it will also make for a more comfortable nights camp. However, I always pack some in ear headphones to ear plugs just in case 👍 Even alpine tents that are very tough still need digging into snow to make them perform the best in strong winds. You also want to pitch the tent tail to wind for most designs to offer the lowest resistance to those large gusts!! Looked like fun anyways 😄 Best wishes Michael & Esme!
@AntSurviveTheNight
@AntSurviveTheNight Год назад
Hello Michael, hope you are well mate. Yeah no problem, it's been a great video for fabulous comments and sharing advice. The plan was to go out and experience a extreme winter camp. We had planned to head up to Robinson but thought better of it as the top of the mountain is totally flat and we would really be in for a night. We opted to drop lower with protection but a place where we could experience the evening and still be totally safe. Yes, we had all the gear (apart from my bivi, I forgot it) ear plugs were definitely on the list haha. Great to hear from you and big thanks for coming over and having a watch Michael

I'm not sure that un-sleeved poles are the 'great idea' they are claimed to be . A test against a single offset walking pole pyramid (wooden) would have been good. Don't forget to use stones (just put them back). I've found in very high wind that as low a profile is best, even a poncho over a vertical packframe is good.

Pleased to say Hilleberg's response has been as expected - faultless - they are replacing the damaged pole sections. I believe the DAC pole (they're NOT made by Hilleberg) was faulty. I had my ancient Terra Nova duolite tourer collapse in 60mph winds (gusts) it was generally about 40mph in the Shetlands. A guyline snapped. The person next to me had a scarp 1 and it survived just about, it was moving about a bit the poles didn't buckle or bend. The cross over poles on the scarp 1 (in this video) were not fixed to the corners with their velcro straps. That's why it failed. User error as far as I'm concerned. It clearly isn't set up correctly even though in the video you are saying it is. It might not be Tony's fault..... If he's never used the cross over poles before. But he should have practiced. (It does look like they are attached correctly on the non ripped side) The scarp used in the Shetlands didn't have a guy line attached where Tony did. (Where it ripped) but I think it was the flexing of the cross over poles not fitted correctly that did the damage. I think the more modern scarp has space for an extra centre pole. I'd have double poled the hilleberg if you knew this weather was coming. I think I'd take down this video or edit out everything apart from how well the bob cat did.

@Conny79
@Conny79 Год назад
Why take it down or edit it out? If you was there, you would assume that Tony had pitched it right, considering he has had it a long time, and that the fact Ant does not own a scarp tent and does ask if it was pitched correctly. All I see in this vid is Ant ribbing Tony cause his cheap tent survived. He even says in the vid, that if the bobcat fails, he will get in the scarp. These things happen. Its just a tent and no tent can with stand stronger freak winds, just look at trees that get up rooted.No malice in this what's so ever.

That rip looks irreparable. What a shame. I've had a few largish holes in tents, usually setting them alight in the porch whilst cooking. Ebay sells suitable nylon by the metre and I've patched them up with the girlfriend's sewing machine and gluing the stitch with some seam proof. May look like nan's quilt now, but adds a bit of character and saves a few quid. Happy camping, especially if you make it to Dartmoor! ,
@AntSurviveTheNight
@AntSurviveTheNight Год назад
Hi Tony, yes holes and rips can be hard to sort. I've been using tenacious tape to repair mine. Very sticky, wet proof and looks good. Granted I only have it in coyote brown which looks a little strange on green tents but as you say, it adds something to it doesn't it. Yeah good tents are hard to come by.
