Is the rain coat waterproofing a rubbish surface finish or full gore tex? the finishes in my opinion all wear off. we need coats that last 30 years not 3 years. finishes imo opinion cannot be made good, nikwax re-proofer is too gentle organic to be any good imo, I've got three waterproof coats all no longer waterproof. I'm thinking all rubber or full gore tex, non of these other finishes. are much cop, and the brands degrade too quick to trust. truly wonderful drone shots in the morning.
Good thoughts there and who knows! The cynic in me says that if they made the coating to never wear off, we would never buy a new jacket! I've had good results with Nickwax, but like you say it wears off too quickly. Liking the idea of Paramo jackets and doing some research on them at the mo......
Went to my local supplier in November, Climbers Shop, Ambleside. Thought i would replace the Mountain Equipment shell I had on, circa 2002 for a new one! Matey said! WHY!! There’s nothing wrong with that one! Did not expect that response! And saved £300. Thank you for inviting me to your birthday celebration. Enjoyed the occasion with a can of Brew Dog Double Hazy Jane! Cheers Mate, Happy birthday. Xx
Great shop, the lad who works there has completed some outstanding challenges around the local area too - he's a legend. A top local retailer. Thanks for watching mate 👍🏕️
@@MCMOutdoors completely agree. I’ve been chatting to him recently as he’s been away to South Africa and Iceland but back now at The Climbers Shop. Couldn’t meet a nicer guy
Hi just come across your video, I’ve been a walker, hiking cyclist, and a completely out door fan all my life, never really tried wild camping. As you’ve said you cant beat nature scenery, people never take it all in its so inwardly so rewarding, will keep following you MCM camping brilliant Perspect😀😀😀😀👍👍👍🗻⛺️
Absolutely brilliant video Chris. Loved every minute of it. Happy Birthday and what a great place to be to hear the winner from Darwin!!! Up the reds and keep up the good work.
Im not a walker or outdoorsman but watching you explain what you see and enjoy you can hear the love you share with us. Your description of all the changes in weather and the brilliance of the scenery it’s exciting to someone like me. Thank you till next time
Brilliant! Looks absolutely stunning - I wish I'd done this years ago when I was younger... Great to see you really enjoying it and furthermore making such interesting videos! (My first time to your channel by the way!). 💙👊
Have a great birthday Chris, thanks for the great content. Always find your camping vlogs super relaxing , lovely to chill out to at the end of a hectic day. Will always love being in the outdoors, that will never get old! 🎉
Thanks man, appreciate it. I was long overdue a morning like that - they happen once in a blue moon as you no doubt know! Here's to many more outdoor adventures mate!
Wow, some absolutely stunning footage. We all benefitted from your efforts. Congratulations on your birthday and much deserved subscriber numbers. Really enjoyable.
Happy Birthday mate! 42? Spent longer in the queue for the Co Op 🤣 I like how you've had a piece of kit on that you've had for years! I'm not particularly enjoying the 'next big thing' with all the RU-vidrs ATM. Everyone showing off the Nortent Vern 1 as the greatest thing ever, might be, but I never trust anyone who puts out a groundsheet out bigger than the tent when their doing a review. 😉
Haha, love it. I've actually got most of my old gear, I tend to hoard stuff! Each to their own I guess, but I'm not sure how you can take a tent out of a bag and claim that it can beat tent a, b, c etc - without having used it extensively in a range of conditions. I have used the MSR Access on many camps and in varying weather conditions, but still not in any position to make a review on it - credibility is very important to me. I took some bits out of this video, esp after a few beers - and many channels are becoming nothing more than an advertisement, rather than focusing on the beauty of wild camping itself. I've been guilty of it myself to a degree, but firmly going the other way now. Thank you for watching pal.
@@MCMOutdoors absolutely agree! I watched most of your videos and I think your 100% up front with the kit. I would love to see your beer rant lol. MSR's are great I have a few, my first tent tbh. I always say on my videos that I don't do reviews I just say what I've experienced, doesn't stop folks having a go though. 😂 You keep being you mate 👍
That was an absolute fantastical camp. I was out a couple of weeks ago and had no signal on my radio or network on my phone, gutted. Then i remembered id downloaded a film. Relief from what could have been a long night lol. Good to see you back out. Happy birthday Chris
Hello from NZ, the world becomes a different place when the snows come, but what a place!! I could feel the cold through my screen. I just love being on the 'tops', it's magical. On some of our ranges we have eternal snow, but you have to climb higher for that. I'm constantly in the mountains and have been for 50 + years. I hope that you too can continue to roam your mountains and enjoy many more trips. Enjoyed the video ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ ☺☺
"It's where you pitch it, that's your home" love that pal. A very happy birthday Chris, hope you've had a fantastic day pal. What a video, loved it mate, one of your best videos buddy that for sure.
Nice one mate - star of the show is always the scenery and the mountains - was brilliant to be out in really testing weather and the nav the next day was a challenge too - ATB pal
Allways wanted to go camping, never had the time, kids now grown and gone.herself too.. Retire in 2 years so I will then.your 42. Just 64.. I cannot believe how fast time goes…💁🧐🇮🇪
Brilliant Chris. Dad and I thoroughly enjoyed this one (partial to Wales as you know) it was GHLee I went to with your Nan when I got my first months pay . Regular visits followed including with lovely Emiliexx Happy Birthday 🎉
Wow just wow. What a brilliantly edited video, unreal scenes. The drone footage was absolutely amazing. Have a great birthday Chris and thanks for sharing your journey. 🎂🍺
Lovely camp Chris with a fantastic morning. Happy birthday. At 42 you only count down from three before you get up, at 58 it's at least ten 😂. Many thanks for sharing your adventures.
Cheers Neil - I get lucky with about one of these camps in every 2 years or so - hit the jackpot with this. Scenes, rugged peaks, snow and a few beers taking it all in. Thanks very much for watching and all of your support for the channel over the years mate. ATB
@@MCMOutdoors for sure pal. While we're here and looking at your Soulo BL, i think it's fair to say it's still the King of 1 man winter mountain tents. I've seen the recent Vern 1 reviews, and i know it's a steal at the price when compared, but i'll go for a proven track record - The BL is on the shopping list, now i just need to decide what colour to get.
Yes, the Vern 1 looks nice on paper - I'd like to test one to compare. Lots of claims at the moment, but no real tests that I have seen - nothing more than over dramatic claims...... The Soulo BL is for me, the ultimate in one person shelters until I've experienced the competition. You won't regret it 👍
That Jacket! The nuts! "I bought this myself, Hilleberg don't give tents away" intentional or not, that line is immense. The amount of people selling Soulo's just to go out and buy a new Vern 1 is insane. It's no doubt a great tent but if you have a Soulo, I don't believe you need to sell, each to their own mind you. Lá breithe shona duit a chara - happy birthday my friend.
Yep, each to their own..... Competition is always good for the consumer. I will hopefully try a Vern 1 at some point and then I will make a genuine comparison, having used the Soulo since 2016 in many different weather conditions. Thank you for watching and taking time to leave me a comment 👍🏕️
Absolutely epic way to spend turning 42🎉 stunning scenery and loved the drone footage the following morning. Heck of a wind chill up there. That’s definitely a camp you won’t forget mate. Brilliant ⛺️❄️🥶👌
The wind chill was ace - I looked like a beetroot on the way back home :-) That morning was magical and for the time the skies were clear, I will never forgot those views and the atmosphere!
Wow mate. What an experience this must have been for you. You've absolutely spoilt us with the epic scenery here too and online content just doesn't do it justice so it just have been breathtaking in person! Amazing content mate and so made up for you that you've had that experience. Inspiring stuff - and your outlook on all of this is just spot on and really respect it and have done ever since I started watching you a good few years back. All the best mate and cheers for making my evening - watching this 👍🏻 Edit: And I almost forgot to say - Happy Birthday! What a way to spend it. 🎂🎈
Cheers David, really enjoyed myself here - was a superb adventure and ace memories made. Absolutely love being in the solitude of the mountains! Thanks for all of your fantastic support.
Brilliant video and happy birthday pal. I retire end of March so can't wait to plenty camping without the rushing back to get back to work,I can stay longer and relax more now😊
Well you certainly are a braver fashion lion than I am! I have an old skiing jacket in that vibrant indigo colour and I absolutely love it. It's in good nick too. But it sticks out like a sore thumb in the slopes. So I don't. Good on you for looking past all that nonsense! 👏
Great video 👍 but the hilleburg is definitely not a bomb proof tent! I’ve seen them fail many times in the wind unfortunately! I think there just becoming a fashionable tent to have now on RU-vid! I use the Nordisk Svalbard on the mountains, it’s built like a tank.
Cheers for watching! Respectfully disagree with your comment about Hilleberg being fashionable for RU-vid - tried and tested brand with real pedigree and used in the harshest places of the world. I've owned the Soulo for around 8 years and used in a variety of conditions, some extreme. Never failed, only once had a pole bend slightly in extreme winds - Hille replaced the pole section without question. It's a great tool for a job 👍 Nordisk make some superb tents, the Svalbard is nice. Low profile to shed wind, although not much space. I have the Telemark 2.2LW, Oppland and Halland 2LW, fantastic. ATB 👍
Cheers, enjoyed this - some beautiful conditions. Good to see the old gear still working, I still use my marmot lightweight shell bought from camp and climb in Sheffield in early 90s.
Always good to have some old gear still working! I always keep an eye out for the old Karrimor rucksacks on Ebay! Some good finds to be had. ATB & thanks for watching
Nice one. Love the jacket, I've still got my meru peak orange and blue from 1990 ish and I'm 54. I ve bought others goretex jackets since but the menu is a bomb shelter and still going strong.
Epic video Chris! Looked a fab camp! Made even better with the commentary of Darwin's winner! Thanks for filming and editing it all. Ps. Still use plenty of gear bought in the mid-90s myself, including a Rab Ladakh sleeping bag complete with a big 'Made in Sheffield' label. Best wishes, matt
I loved the way you shared your video, thanks for sharing your experience. It was an enjoyable experience. I liked everything about it. Some people talk non stop, too much. But I liked yours. You let us take it in with you. Thanks. Oh, I loved all the music you used. I would like to know the classical piece.
Heh.. I still have my Gen1 North Face purple down vest w original TNF inside brown label and metal snaps, circa 1974. Nice video, what stove was that, Fire Maple?
Hi Chris a hot tent 🏕️ is better in the Winter 🥶 you would have to buy a wood 🪵 stove make sure the rating on it on how much heat comes out of it just a tip 😊
I'm not sure I would have liked to lug a hot tent, stove and fuel up there 😁 was bad enough wit everything I took. I was lovely and warm, I enjoy these conditions. Thank you for watching 👍
40th for today mate, so joined the 40s club. Couldn't get out and do this unfortunately but I am heading to snowdonia start of Apr for a week. Best wishes Chris
Happy birthday! Another great video. Not sure if you are aware but Berghaus offer free repairs on their gear, the details can be found on their website. Might be worth seeing what they can do with that awesome jacket? Keep the vids coming!
It seems the Soulo has a new competitor with the 2024 Vern 1 tent . That's all I am seeing on RU-vid lately. Nice wildcamp up there ! First time on your channel
Thanks for watching! I've never tried a Vern 1 although I hope to do so, until then - I could say or verify any claims about how it compares. Stay tuned though as I will give an honest opinion having used the Soulo extensively over many years 👍🏕️
Berghaus definitely gone downhill, owned by JD sports now I believe, hence the catering to the 'yutes' Montane took over -funnily enough also from the North East of England. Re Mera Peak - they released the 2000 version recently, based on the old 90s shape with the drawstrings etc. I found a mint condition turquoise 90s one in a charity shop for 40 quid, sold it for 150. Folk asking 200 for them nowadays. Legendary jacket nonetheless. Awesome upload mate, really enjoyed it!
Happy (belated) birthday, Chris👍 Im a bit late as I've been in the internet blackspot of the Langdales for a couple of nights 🤣 Looks like you had the perfect camp there! Great to see the 'vintage' gear getting a run out. It is a shame that some brands arent what they were. Im with you on Berghaus but I've actually bought a few Sprayway items in the past couple of years and they are actually quite decent (now marketed as the more budget-friendly brand of Mountain Equipment, who they are now owned by). Ive got a North Face McMurdo parka that I bought about 21 years ago. I very rarely wear it as it's massively over-engineereed for the UK'S climate (and ive put on about 3 stone since then!) but the quality is miles better than all the fashion stuff they put out these days! Excellent video.
Cheers Benny, hope you had a top time in the Lakes mate and the obligatory fee pints of Old Peculiar in the ODG hotel! Yes, shame re some brands but good to hear re Sprayway! I've always liked the look of that parka - it looks like it would stop a 9mm round! Really enjoyed this camp and back out in Snowdonia in a few weeks! Thanks for watching pal
HAPPY BORN DAY, mate...damn I feel old, I was 12 when you were born 🤪 and George Henry Lee, there's a blast from my childhood..... wasn't that great when Liverpool won that game way late 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Haha, yes - I couldn't believe it - turned the radio on and it was literally the last minute of extra time! I forgot it was even on! That Sprayway fleece was bought for me when I was 14!
Happy Birthday Chris. Nice one mate enjoyed it. Kinda agree about Berghaus in a way, but I still use the Paclite waterproof trousers and I have a pair of boots which have lasted and I love. I have looked after them mind with regular waxing. Some of the items from the more fashionable (expensive) brands are not quite as good as they are made out to be...imo Cheers pal
Thanks mate - appreciated! Always worth taking time to look after your investment! Some of the Fjallraven gear is 'high street' ...... but those Keb trousers are superb, lasted for years and really are good. I always wear a pair of cheap but effective Ronhill tracksters under them - unbeatable combination! I love how the outdoor gear scene is so diverse and subjective; people have brands they love and remain loyal to - ultimately because they associate those bits of gear with fantastic memories in our great outdoors - even when we disagree, we all have that in common! ATB pal
Happy boffday😊. A quick question, how d you attach your gloves to your jacket? Is it a primary school hack with elastic up the sleeves and across your shoulders?. I'm asking cos I got some posh gloves from GO... shudda bn 75£ but got em for 45£ . Love to know ?? 🙏👍🏼👍🏼
Cheers mate! These gloves have elastic loops already attached - but you could easily fashion some up yourself with some elastic! You could go old skool with elastic up the sleeves etc, or depending on what gloves they are, fashion something elastic around each wrist 👍
Advice: pile snow outside around thebottom of the tent. It's a natural insulator and will block the wind. Great vid by the way. Cheers from Maine, USA.
Berghaus 'Extrem' gear is still some of my favourite. I prefer the original Extrem gear, I think it's a little more durable. Not common on the hill either, which is another upside.
There's something magical about getting out of the bad weather in a tent you trust. Once you put that lantern on, the outside world can do it's thing and be damned.
