Budget CHINESE CARBON DISC Road Bike - Full Build

Chinese carbon disc brake road bike build, including TOTAL COST AND WEIGHT!
I have been building and riding rim brake road bike setups for over a decade. I love them because of their inherent simplicity, they are very low maintenance, and things very rarely go wrong with rim brake bikes.
However recently there has been a massive shift towards disc brake setups for road bikes, and with this it brought a whole host of cheaper disc brake options to the market on the likes of AliExpress and eBay.
Disc brake road bikes have come down in price recently, but many of the larger brands like Specialised, Cannondale, and Canyon still charge top dollar. So, I decided it was time to do a Chinese carbon disc build on the cheap.
The frame for the build was supplied to me by a company called Trifox and is their X16 Speedster model with thu-axles. Full carbon, nice and lightweight, and comes with a BSA threaded bottom bracket.
My chosen groupset is Shimano 105 R7000, the wheels are tubeless 50mm deep section carbon rims from Elite Wheels on AliExpress, and the handlebars are a fully carbon integrated bar and stem from Toseek.
The brakes however are really interesting. I chose not to use a hydraulic disc groupset, like the 105 R7020, and instead opted to use a set of hybrid mechanical disc brakes callipers from a company called ZRACE on Aliexpress to keep the cost down.
Basically, for the build I tried to go as light and cheap as I could, and I am super pleased with the results. Surprisingly lightweight, great braking performance, and amazing looks IMO.
So in this video, I will outline the full build process, from start to finish, go over the final cost and weight of the bike (with comparisons to some brand name bikes), and get the bike on the road to give my first impressions.
Got any questions or comments, stick them in the comments 👇 and I'll try and get back to as many of you as I can!

I also came here to comment about removing the initial white plastic tubes... I have never done this, but I can tell, just buy looking at it, there is a purpose for them, to run the cable through first and then the cable outers.... doh! They do this when the run underground cables for subdivision cable distribution network, which I know. You have done this mistake in other video builds, and thus it takes longer to do, your way. But I enjoy watching your videos, thanks, keep them coming.

Love your work Luke! Im on my second disc bike (commuter) build so far. It's the way forward. Both my commuter and lightweight bike have parts and wheels that are fully interchangeable and I like! I was squinting a bit at the choice of handlebar, wheel and brake calipers. (You have 2 brakes so there is redundancy). I'd be fascinated how the wheels hold out (Farsports for me) after a pot hole smash and I'll cross the fingers on the handlebar. After going chinese carbon fully integrated on my first build I opted back to an aluminium bar and stem for the commuter. I got annoyed with cable routing issues. Love the channel. Great work and keep it up buddy. You just need to grab some cheap power meter next!

Mounting tubeless tires: you can use soapy water to help get the buggers on the rim. Helps to seat the bead as well when pumping up. Wearing gloves as you are doing helps too. Use the palms of your hands, not your thumbs for better leverage and power. Tubeless are transformational. Been using road tubeless for 3 years. Never flatted.

Slotting the 2nd bead onto the rim technique: When one bead is installed and you are struggling to get the last part of the bead onto the rim at the valve do the following. Set the wheel on the floor with the valve to the floor and place your hands on top of the wheel. Push the bead down onto the rim and work your way around the sides of the wheel to stretch the tire from both sides toward the valve. This gives maximum slack, as the stretch is then dispursed more favourably giving maximal slack at the part where the bead is not yet seated. Hope this explanation is intelligible. @Trace Velo
@TraceVelo
@TraceVelo 3 года назад
Ok nice! I have always fitted them holding the wheel with the valve at the top. Deffo giving this a try next time. Do you lube up the tyre bead when fitting it aswell? I think schwalbe does some sort of tyre lubricant for this, never tried it tho...

@@TraceVelo No I never used lube, just the described method, seems to do the job for me :)
@Bishop0151

I've had some success with this. I've also left the tyres on a radiator for a couple of minutes to warm and soften them a little. It only gives you a mm or so of give over the whole tyre, but that's often all that you need. Only doable with foldable tyres with flexible beads. Really cheap tyres with metal beads, this is useless.

When aligning disk brakes with the callipers, I loosen the calliper, apply the brake and then tighten with the brake applied. This guarantees that the calliper is centred on the disk.
@jasoncross6151
@jasoncross6151 3 года назад
It’s a quick way but not the correct way as it won’t account for one piston not moving the same as its counterpart. Calipers should be centred to the disc and then manipulate pistons to move equally.
@glennoc8585

It gaurantees SFA. I align disc calipers with gauges it's the out way you can get no rubs assuming rotors aren't bent.

No it doesn't guarantee anything
@disturbed4ever2
@disturbed4ever2 3 года назад
This only works on IS calipers like avid bb7 not on flat mount calipers where there is no tilt adjustment. Also on a hydraulic caliper this won't necessarily unless the pistons are perfectly moving out in sync. You should be centring the caliper based on the line in the caliper then fix any incorrect piston movement
@willyolio9590
@willyolio9590 3 года назад
It works on dual-piston calipers, but not single-piston. Not that anyone should be using single-piston anyway, they suck. All hydraulic calipers, hybrid mech/hydraulic ones like this Zrace, and some mechanical ones like the TRP Spyre have dual-piston action, and it'll work. Super easy.

@@TraceVelo I bought wheels from the same company on aliexpress too. They're gravel oriented for big-ass tyres (I think I can go up to 47 or 50-622). Bought them with Sapim CX spokes and chose a DT Swiss 350 hub with Centerlock. 575€ altogether. The wheels are quite superb I have to say, especially for the price. My only issue is that I have a crazy hard time fitting tyres on them (I ride Continental GP 4 Seasons). Crazy value for the money you spend; it's genuinely baffling.

Bit worried about that brake cable entry in the frame. Ideally, that's a warranty return before its touched. But having filed it, something needs to be in place , such as an epoxy barrier or some form of grommet at the very least, to stop delamination due to the repeated movement of the brake cable.
@Stoffendous
@Stoffendous 3 года назад
I hope he sees your comment cause pure absolutely right. Normally a frame comes with inserts to protect the raw carbon.
@TraceVelo
@TraceVelo 3 года назад
Ok, this is a fair observation. It may happen, but I personally don't think it will delaminate in this manner. Carbon fibre is much more durable than people tend to give it credit for. The layers of carbon are impregnated with epoxy in the curing process. If anything, the raw carbon will errode away at the plastic cable housing, and eventually wear away at the Kevlar in the Jagwire KEB-SL housing/outer. But I could be totally wrong, and I'll definitely keep an eye on it!
@GunnyWombat
@GunnyWombat 3 года назад
@@TraceVelo What you've done by filing it is create a sharp edge where each fibre layer is exposed at the end. The movement of the cable now will be specifically pushing those layers apart, starting at the thinnest edge. The edges need to be resealed to stop that from happening. Its not critically structural at that part of the frame, but, the delamination can propagate towards the head tube area, which may well then turn out to be. Imagine a deck of playing cards. Strong when together, but if you spread them out, its easy to push apart.

Mounting tires doesn't have to be difficult. As you are about to work on the last bit of tire over the rim, just go around the tire and push both sides of the tire towards the middle of the rim. Doing this will give you just enough slack to fit that last bit over the rim without using any tools or towels. Works every time for me...

Strange. I have the same calipers and the overall braking on that bike is trash, haha. I'd estimate about 20% of the stopping power of hydraulic in terms of hand force vs braking force applied to rotors. For from your 95%! I'm using different shifters and different cables though, so maybe that's it. More experimenting needed!

It would be very interesting to get more data on the cable-actuated hydraulic brakes from China. Juin Tech is known to be awesome, but a tad more expensive. Other cheap one's I've seen are ZTTO, PRO, and Zoom Xtech, seems to be similar to the Zrace. I've ordered some stuff from ZTTO, they seem to be a very legit manufacturer (=real, own brand).
@TraceVelo
@TraceVelo 3 года назад
Fair enough. I mean they took a little while to get bedded in, but once they were, the rear brake locks up at a moment's notice on my setup. Like I said, I don't have masses of experience on fully hydraulic setups, only from a handful of bikes I've hired, and these may not have been bled properly ect. But I mean the main takeaway for me was just the fact that they are leagues above rim braking on my other bike. I also have a 160mm rotor and some decent Shimano pads on the way aswell, so will be fitting those too, see if that improves things!

Holy trail batman! 73.5 degree head angle + 50 mm fork offset = 49 mm trail (!!!) That is ridiculously fast handling, like, even a Tarmac has 57 mm trail in its largest size (smaller trail = faster handling). Does the front end feel twitchy?? Is it OK to ride no handed? Does it feel skittish down hills?
