Great video - I love the detail you show. I also like Freddy's channel but he does not go into the detail you need to actually do the work. His channel is still very entertaining but I do like fact that you go into detail. Thanks for posting. Safe travels to you and Heidi also.

Definily have all the rubber replaced in all of those fuel lines. We have a shop called “ the hose shop” that does expert work at restoring all of the lines. Much cheaper than getting new pieces from Porsche. It’s just not worth the risk of an engine fire, to re use any of that old rubber fuel line.

Love your note taking and photography steps, I've found the best way to enhance and ease that task is to use an app like Notability on the iPad. Now I start a notebook in the app for each sub-assembly, take the photos using the iPad camera straight into the page, where you are embedding them and then you can annotate them with notes, arrows, etc. Add your written notes as assembling/dis-assembling and when you're finished you have a self-contained ref. work for that assembly. Repeat, ad-infinitum. It keeps all the photos, notes, related detritus (like web-refs, PDFs, parts diagrams, links, part numbers, etc) together far easier and makes it easily accessible in the future (via your phone, etc). Use and Apple Pencil to scribble notes for maximum simplicity … Once into the swing of this you'll never go back to the old system, believe me!

Love the Freddy / Tavarish tshirt! I gave one to my main motorhead friend. I recently commented on how clean you stay while working on the cars and took your response to heart. I just did the sparkplugs (all 16) on my Mercedes AMG V8 and only got 1/2 as dirty as usual. Working to get to your level. 8) Keep up the great content.

Another detailed video! Thanks. Re: the $160 fuel line, I would suggest you take the current piece to a shop that does hydraulic fittings (think heavy equipment or diesel repair) where they can replace the rubber portion using your connector. A friend suggested this to me years ago. As to good or bad results, ask for references for handling small fittings. All my best!

Mansion! Ferrari! Porsches galore! Harbor Freight ratchets! (I recognize them because I have them, too. Some of them are pretty neat. But I also recommend trying a Snap On Dual 80 ratchet, but please, never pay retail. Used on ebay is the only way to go with that silly company.) Also, that 1/4" drive rotohead ratchet has some pretty coarse teeth. I'm currently in love with my Pittsburgh Pro flex-head 1/4" ratchet as my go-to 1/4" ratchet. Very fine teeth. Flexed to vertical is almost as good a spinner of loose nuts, too.

Really interesting! That air flow meter looks identical to the one in my 1986 Range Rover which I’m about to start working on! Think they both use a similar Bosch injection system (although the RR one is Lucas-branded). Look forward to graduating from Range Rover to working on Porsche some day 😬

For most of the nuts and bolts, you might find it cheaper to just get new hardware, instead of paying to get the old stuff cleaned and then plated. Also, after you get it back from the plater, you have to work out which nut and bolt go where.

Hi Franny - not sure if you knew about the PET so thought I'd share it here. Porsche has a PDF parts catalog available, free, for basically every year of car. It's called a PET, can't remember the acronym. Not only does it provide part numbers and quantities, but also diagrams that show where things are located. Since your car is an '86, your specific PET is this link: www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf/originalparts/en/E_911_86_KATALOG.pdf

Ah makes me wish I still owned my G series! Despite the high cost of replacing those 33 yr old fuel lines, it is money very well spent now. I use an industrial O-ring lubricant called Dow 111 for injector O-rings or on oil return tube O-rings for example. I've never used anything that works so well in the many years of wrenching on cars. Great detail and documentation of this step. Can you share who you use for plating? I can never find anyone in the PNW. Thanks.

Great job illustrating a complex disassembly. Have you considered vapor blasting to clean and pack the surface of things like the manifolds? Also, I must ask, don't you ever get your pearl necklace caught on something when your working? Good luck with the project!
@HeidiandFranny

I've seen vapor blasting it it really does a great job. We are trying to find a place to get the plating and powder coating done. I'll see if they can to that too... Oh, not yet! I love my pearls :)

Is the oil from the crankcase? I think the oil in the intake plenum and on the butterfly valve is probably also from the PCV. Since the vacuum is being drawn (I assume) from the intake, that might be the source of the oil. The question I might ask is if the oil mist is condensing in all of those spots.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 года назад
Well, the crankcase breather goes into the oil tank and then back to the engine. It really isn't that bad...
@sportscarnut

Re oil on the intake... did a previous owner used an oiled K&N air filter? I would not, but people do.
@HeidiandFranny

Great videos on rebuilding the intake manifold. I'm thinking of rebuilding the intake manifold on my AC equipped 1987 Carrera. Do you think I can remove and reinstall the entire intake manifold without dropping the engine?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 года назад
That's a good question! Probably? Not sure if it would come off in one piece, but you can split it in the center and that should work. Just take lots of photos...
@davidpsalt

Curious to know where you will be sending your injectors to be cleaned and tested. Also, do you know where you will have the plating done? I am getting ready to remove my intake from my 85 cab (in frame) to get rid of 30+ years of vacuum leaks etc. to smooth out my idle issues. Thanks in advance for your reply!
