@@valice4712 they change in appearance and texture once you freeze them and become really soft...frozen bananas are best for smoothies and baked goods. I always peel them because trying to peel a frozen banana is no fun and once it thaws it gets mushy. I do freeze bananas all the time.
You can leave the peel on, but I dont recommend it. Also if you want banana slices, freeze them separated on a cookie sheet first. Otherwise they clump together. But if you dont mind that, go for it. I'm too lazy to freeze separately first. Haha. In addition to smoothies, you can make a pretty awesome vegan banana ice cream. :)
Good to know, it confused me bc I just bought bread that said it may contain milk and I was like crap... Not vegan. But when I read the ingredients list, I couldn't find milk in it so I didn't understand. now I know thank you!!! 😂👍
Listen to this woman if you're newly vegan!!! She helped me out a tonne a couple of years ago. Anytime anyone says veganism is expensive I can clap back like a pro
Hi, i used to have US$400 food budget but since i cut down my animal protein by 95% my food budget’s gone down to $200. It’s the meat, eggs & milk that are pricey where i live. Sometimes i can even live on $100 a month when i’m just too lazy to go to the store. I simply go to a traditional market down the street for veggies, tofu & tempeh. Then simply cook them in the ways i love to eat them minus the animal protein & oil. Those chinese broccolis are awesome stir fried w/ lots of garlic & doenjang if you have it. I lost a lot of weight 5 yrs ago before i got my tongue cancer eating mostly veggies. But my drinking was a bit out of control and w/ age come cancer. Age & booze just don’t mix. So now 3 yrs after i had my cancer treatment and 3 months 95% oil free vegan, i’m healthier than i ever been. Keep up the good work, Rose. I’m looking forward to more recipes.
I became vegetarian in 11th grade, that was 9 years ago and I still am. It's probably one of the best decisions of my life. Also a tip for vegetarians. Always check cheese for rennet/lipase. This is derived from calf stomach which makes it not vegetarian (parmesan, and feta cheese usually always have that). I never found out until years later -.-
For those on a budget, consider that in the U.S., with the equivalent of the groceries being $85, that this amount is what you might pay for a couple going to dinner twice, or a single person, around 5-6 times, (including tip) This food should last one person almost a month, it would seem. That would be 70-90 meals. And in Florida, where I live, there is no food tax unless you eat out.
Tofu PRO TIP: store in air-tight container with cold water, and change the water every time you use it for longer fridge life! It will last longer than the expiry date!
Good tip. I have also used unopened tofu at least 2-3 months after the date and have never had a problem. I always check to make sure it looks/smells OK though. 😁
Cooking and freezing dried beans is genius!! I usually keep both dry and canned beans on hand as well but I never thought to prep the dry ones like that!
yessss!!! Freeze one cup of cooked beans in separate bags/containers and any time your'e ready to eat, just take them out and microwave/thaw them! woohoo !!
I was plant based for a whole month a while ago and I felt amazing but I couldn’t keep it up. I’m slowly working back towards a plant based diet now. Something I’ve found that’s great for snacking is popcorn. You can put different oils on it and season it with traditional salt or stuff like garlic and chili powder. It’s great!
There is a learning curve when you change your diet. I find having some pre-cooked brown rice, quinoa, etc in the fridge helps. Cutting your veggies and fruit up so they are ready to go helps too. Having an instant pot or pressure cooker helps save time, but canned beans and sauces are a life saver if you are short on time.
I'm not vegan, but I eat mostly plant-based without even thinking about it because it's the cheapest. I spend around 85€ (95$) a month for groceries, including hygiene and cleaning products, and cat food. Where I live a pack of 1kg (2lbs) of rice is about 1.30€ (1.50$) and it makes about 8 to 10 portions of rice depending on how hungry I am. Pasta is even cheaper. A big can of beans will usually last me 4 to 5 meals for less than 1€. The most expensive are fruits and veggies but if you buy in season it's usually cheaper (and more tasty).
I spend less than 100 a month for food/drinks in general. But for me potatoes are the biggest staple (lots of nutrients & cheap & can be stored pretty long) and it's just noodles or rice if I am lazy. Beans/Lentils/Seeds are definitely good as well and smoked tofu every other meal. Other than that I am a big fan of basically all local vegetables and fruits. To eat vegan for less money you basically just have to avoid expensive fruits like berries in general or exotic fruits and try to be very limited with processed foods. Also stick to tap water, maybe buy some tea/coffee to go with it but not beverages. And obviously cook at home and avoid eating out. This makes it more special if you ever treat yourself to go out to a restaurant or something.
@@maryroberts4095 it takes a while for your gut to adapt, especially if you rarely ate vegetables before. Drink a little bit of apple cider before your meal to ease that process
@@maryroberts4095 Sometimes taking digestive enzymes help through the transition. Also, chewing thoroughly is important. One of the benefits of whole plant food eating is that the odor disappears from feces and gas. It's only a problem if you are still eating meat/dairy/eggs and then throw in more veggies.
@@maryroberts4095 quite the opposite tbh. like someone said below it's probably because you had meat-gut and the vegetables were pushing the crap out of ur body that's what smelled so bad. Not really joking about this but once you've been vegan for a while your farts don't tend to smell like anything. I remember when i ate meat and it's a whole different fucking world literally as a teenager every fart i made smelled like farts. It's like something is really wrong with that meat dude. I can't really explain it. I mean you think farts ''should'' smell like rotten eggs or something, but really that's just because you choose to eat things that make your insides smell like crap lmfao. You all think it's normal to have smelly farts but in reality, it's not! So many vegans mention how much better their digestive system has become after being vegan for a while. I'm talking about personal conversations with people who have told me that their farts smell less too. Bit of a weird conversation to have tbh but you brought it up so i'm assuming you wanted to know the reality of the situation, if i had to guesstimate a percentage for you, i would tell you that since i have been vegan, literally my farts smell at least something like 95% less. Literally 95 in 100 farts that i make since i've been vegan have literally smelled like fucking air. If you want to test this in a laboratory or something be my guest, you can sniff my farts if you want to, and you'll have scientific proof that the large majority of farts that come out of my butthole do not even smell. You could even turn this into a double blind study of about 1000 volunteers, what a job that would be, sitting on a chair having people fart in your face so you can analize wether vegan or meat eater farts smell worse. You would think the answer would be obvious tho tbh.
@@melw3313 I've seen soaking & cooking instructions for 10hrs+ everywhere (chickpeas). I just can't imagine all that is necessary but maybe some places do have really old chickpeas
I insist on extra soaking and rinsing. Beans / legumes are so hard on my digestion, so I do what I can to minimize problems. For those who can get away with not soaking, more power to ‘em.
be sure to make sure kidney beans are cooked at around 100 degrees because if they are only cooked at 70 degrees or something they are toxic. Dunno the specifics about this you may have to look it up wether the pressure cooker takes care of that problem. Canned beans are precooked apparently. Not a food sceintist but literally saw this on youtube a few days ago thought i'd share this since nobody told me about this in school and with the veganism going on i can see someone making a mistake with the dried beans cause it's not even mentioned on the fucking packaging what is this fucking world
i love stir-frying gailan with sesame oil, minced garlic and vegetarian oyster sauce made with mushrooms. i cook spinach the same way too sometimes. this is a very hassle free way to cook up veggies, especially asian veggies.
@@beverlycharles6534 I assume she already had oil so didn't feel the need to buy more just for the purpose of the video. Also, oil is already pretty much a staple for most people
Hi there, I would encourage to adopt a well-planned, organic, unrefined and untempered with vegan diet (consuming raw plant foods where possible so as not to denature or destroy the life-forces and enzymatic activities beneficial to the human system. If disagreeing on this matter, please take some steamed carrots, plant them and see if they will grow; if not, it is because they are 'dead' plant food that cannot benefit one's 'living' cells) consisting of organic fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains is the best diet to provide mankind with ultimate health and longevity. I do not even see a reason to use pharmaceutical supplements e.g Vitamin D is obtainable from organic chestnut mushrooms (UV exposed) and sun-dried mushrooms with the exception of the body's ability to make it (and store it for future use) when exposed to the sun; Zinc from organic cashew nuts; potassium and magnesium from organic bananas; Omega 3 Fatty Acids (beneficial for the brain) from organic walnuts and pecans (looks like the brain and targets it). Please avoid factory produced meat alternatives whose chief ingredient can be 'soy' and may contain preservatives as well as additives (e.g Vinegar, a corrosive agent). Food toxicity and nutrient deficiency (e.g white bread, white rice and white sugar) are a deadly combination as one is hindering the body's building materials needed to action healing whilst at the same time taxing the system with more toxic stuff, thus bringing about disease and possibly even an early death. Best wishes 💙💙💙
Another idea for hummus - if you are having a broth soup and you would like it creamier, add a T or more into your bowl and give it a stir. Super creamy and adds yumminess. I've also done it in chili, just to give it a pop when I had spicy hummus. Yum!! And Rose, thank you for all you do. I really appreciate your videos!!!
Thank you so much girl 😭😭 I’ve been wanting to try out veganism for so long now but my main problem is I don’t have anyone to guide me but your channel is helping me feel not so alone in this
This video is such a help! I try plant-based lifestyle for a year and I still learn something new everytime I watch your videos 😁Thank you veeery much😊
I really love your grocery and recipe videos because they tend to be very Asian-centric and I live in Japan which makes finding the ingredients a lot easier. A lot of people on RU-vid use ingredients I can't find here. Thanks so much for your videos!
Most helpful video I have seen yet, I'm just starting and not sure where to shop or what to buy. So this video and whole channel is literally a life saver. Thank you for the content! ✌❤😊
Just love your videos ..... my cooking motto is if it ain’t easy it ain’t for me .... you keep me on this plant based dairy free journey along with sweet simple vegan ..... your channels make it alot easier than it was 10 years ago when I tried this and failed miserably .... thank you 😊
I don't have an answer to that to be honest. Perhaps with my life/family/ friends I was lazy. This was years ago. I'm slowly making the transition back!
@@lilartistca Yes, dealing with those in your life who aren't on board with you diet change can be very difficult and sometimes it seems easier to just go with the flow. Thank you for sharing and I am glad you are transitioning back. Good luck to you :)
Mud Sock Girl Hi! Just wanted to add in another opinion here, hope you don’t mind! Xx I was vegan for a while (well vegetarian and transitioned to vegan) but now I’m neither. Honestly, I hate it. I felt so much better while eating vegan, both physically and mentally. I just currently live with my family right now and they’re very judgmental when it comes to what I eat and I’ve given in to just going with what my family wants to save myself the heartache of them judging me harshly every single day. I want to transition back into a vegan diet, and I wholeheartedly plan on doing so once I move out on my own. So, if there’s anyone reading this who can relate to what I’m saying and going through, it’s going to be okay. I know it sucks not being vegan right now, but you’ll be able to one day and it will be okay. You’ll get there, you’ll be in a place where you can eat how you want safely and without worry. Hang in there. It’s okay to not be 100% vegan yet. Do anything you can to cut down on your meat and dairy yourself but don’t put yourself in a situation that will bring yourself pain, emotional or otherwise. You’ll get there. ❤️
Love this! I like how you have the large trumpet mushrooms! I can only find them at the Asian store annnnnd seriously, they're amazing and so versatile! Also, a good app for new vegans is "Is It Vegan". People can scan the barcode to see if it's vegan or not - good app for people who are new to reading the labels ooooor don't want to read it lol
I spent a year living in Canada recently and all the brands and the bilingual labels just gives me an instant flashbacks of my amazing time over there😍
Good for you explaining the “may contain” I think there are so many folks who are so terrified of missing anything non vegan they get caught on the labels saying “100% vegan” and end up spending a LOT more overall on groceries! I am a life long pescatarian (fish a few times a year makes me feel good , it recharges my brain, ) I mainly eat vegan now and the older I get , the kinder it seems to the planet and the healthier it seems for my body. Thanks for sharing !
Try eating 2 tbsp of flax and/or chia a day... I just sprinkle it on my overnight oats. That will give you enough ALA omega 3 that your body can convert into enough DHA omega 3... If you felt better eating fish every so often then it is probably because of not enough DHA so try upping your omega 3 intake from plant sources.
I'd love to see a fridge/pantry tour :-). I love seeing what food other people buy, because it inspires me to get out of the habit of just buying the same things all the time.
I recently developed a meat intolerance so I’m sort of forced to cut meat out entirely (which isn’t vegan but you get it) so I’m trying to learn as much as possible for this new lifestyle! This video (and all your videos) have been so helpful! Thank you sm!!!
Rose, im loving your hair!! Green is my fave colour 😊 I was wondering if you could make a video about dying your hair please? Like whether you need to bleach it or if you know a way to get round it, whether you dye your own hair, what products have worked well for you and stuff like that? I really wanna dye my hair but am worried about bleach and stuff since my hair is also dark like yours Thanks! 💚
I'm still on the hunt for smoked tofu because of this channel. My favorite budget tofu option, where I live, is the kind that's shelf-stable and you can buy in a box. It's more expensive by volume but I'm terrible about wasting perishable food so for me personally it's cost-saving and less wasteful. I keep it in the fridge because I live in Florida and I want it to last FOREVER. Also obsessed with those shelf stable plant milks, so good.

Great work, I've been vegan for 3years, but your video reminded me to eat more beans and lentils! Thank you. Good idea to opt for oat milk, it has the least environmental impact to produce and it's delicious. All the best, Maeve in Ireland
Hallo Rose,I love your greenhair very much, you look adorable! When I was a child(in the sixties ;)/Germany) I told everybody that I would like to have green hair and all of the called me crazy.Who would have thought, that this could be possible nowadays.:)))) - but apart from your haircolours, I like your videos, your recipe, your way to fight for veganism and your positve attitude. Please go on making more videos, thx! Best wishes to you
I've been watching some of your videos lately and I really like your style. I'm not currently vegan but I try to eat vegetarian/vegan at least 4 days a week. Your tips and recipe ideas are very practical and great for a student like me who is always busy and on a tight budget. I must say every time I hear you say the Canadian dollar isn't doing to well, I just laugh because in South Africa all of that will cost me around 1 200 ZAR! Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for this video. I began a month ago an organic diet that includes lot of veggies, gluteen free products and beans. One of my struggles is to shop food because where I live is expensive to have an organic, keto, vegan or gluteen free diet.
I just started dating a vegan and have always had interest in the lifestyle, thank you so much for your videos. You've broken it down and made it simple and easy to digest :)
i’m so glad that you explained that may contain thingy! I went vegan a week ago and I’ve been struggling to find bread because all of them say ‘may contain milk and eggs’ thank you so much!!
Gailan is one of my fave Asian veg (and I love bok choy, too). I just trim the stems, remove any questionable leaves, rinse, and then put in a pan with a tiny spritz of oil and cook over high heat so they get a little char here and there. At the end I turn down the heat and add a little garlic and soy and deglaze with water. Super easy and just takes a few min!
I’m trying those Rubbermaid Countertop containers. They’re supposed to extend the freshness of unrefrigerated produce. So far, at least for potatoes, they’re pretty good. Important if you’re single as, it seems like things go bad the moment you bring them in.
Yay. I love these. Can you do a new vegan kitchen tour. Or update Asian vegan essentials. For cook ing..I like the old vegan guide..I've been vegan 2 yrs. And your video's for research. And I love the old school meal preps. Keep up the great work. You always look adorably beautiful
Thank you so much for this video!! Ive been vegan for 3 weeks so I'm definitely a beginner and I already have most of these staples :) Feels good to know I'm on the right track. I love to put spinach in everything too I usually add a paper towel inside the bag to soak up the extra moisture so it lasts longer :)
Rose, I seriously love your videos. I'm not a vegan but I always watch them! I like your style and personality. When I hear your voice it makes me smile :D :)
What I find as a vegan in Canada is that produce is the most expensive part of my grocery order. My advise is to think about one or two recipes you can make in a week and only buy what you need, and find those sales in your grocery store! Usually I like to buy one or two types of fruit, and I get what's on sale. Great video, I'm glad to have found a Canadian vegan content creator!
I love frozen veggies, I love ones that are with nothing added. When I make rice in my rice maker it has a steamer slot, so I steam frozen soy beans, broccoli, etc. at the same time and little pieces of broccoli fall down into the rice and flavors it :) too.
I love you!!! And your Channel I just went vegan I tried years ago and I couldn’t it seemed so hard but your videos I binged watched and it motivated me so much!!! And made it so much easier for me thank you!!!
Pantry Haul...yes please. I introduced my SO to Aldi the other day. He couldnt believe all the vegan-friendly food they stock. Enjoyed the grocery haul. Sort of a trip down memory lane. Looking forward to great things from you this year. Peace.
Sweet chili sauce is good on stir fry. It's great bc it's so fast. add odon noodles. I make mine 1 pck colorful cabbage 2, peppers, bok choy, dried mushroom rehydrated and garlic/ginger. Sauce & udon. Or add vegan chikn strips. Makes enuff for 4 meals.
RU-vid Username Here I'm one month in, and loving it honestly. ❤️ I feel overall SO much better, I don't deal with a bloated tummy anymore, losing weight wasn't what I was trying to get out of it, but I lost 9 lbs, and I have an amazing amount of energy all the time. I will say that I do go to the gym at least 4-5 times a week, and I try to get at least 1520 calories in a day. But it's been the best decision. Not just because of my health, but because I know somehow I'm making a difference out there you know? :3 I'm the only person in the house who's following a plant based diet, and I have noticed that the smell of beef makes me sick now! Lol
Tina Lemus Any grocery tips? I went to Fiesta today and bought potatoes, broccoli, apples, bananas, tomatoes, spinach, cabbage, Iceberg lettuce, avocados, oatmeal, carrots, etc.
@@sleepymylf2342 same here with getting grossed out over certain smells. For me, it is any kind of dairy. I grew up drinking milk and never noticed the smell. I switched to non dairy milks years ago and if I smell real milk now it makes me sick to my stomach. That stuff is nasty 😵 Congrats on loving your new lifestyle and the 9 lb loss!
Cashews, nutritional yeast, Tahini, Apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, vegan mayo, dollar tree or WinCo 1.00 spices such as onion powder/garlic powder/cayenne/cumin/cinnamon/ Italian spices and dill, sunflower seeds, olives and pickled products such as dill pickles, capers, and jalapenos, and dried chilies all round out my grocery hauls. Not everything do I need all the time, but with the staples you have, (same as mine) these allow me to make so many wonderful meals.
Thanks for mentioning about when food “may contain” non vegan products. I feel like I heard that before but forgot, so very helpful! What you ever talk about how to read food labels for hidden animal products?
The most expensive thing you bought was the fresh blueberries wasn’t it? 😂😂 those things are killer on the wallet, if I buy them I usually buy them frozen then throw them in a smoothie or I make oatmeal on the stovetop and throw them into it to thaw and wow 😍 little bursts of heaven! Add a tiny bit of lemon juice and zest and you’re gold. Lemon and blueberries are so delicious together. ❤️
During the winter it's sometimes hard to get fresh vegetables like broccoli and celery where I live. Avocados makes the best lime pudding or chocolate frosting.
Great grocery haul! Looking forward to meals you make with these items. I would add a huge bag of oats and a 10lb bag of potatoes (I buy them on sale $2 or $3 cnd). ...now I'm craving potato pancakes...
Hi! Thanks for this video. I really love your channel. I’m a new vegan and found this very helpful. When you mentioned about reading labels, that’s the bit that stumps me, especially when I read eggs in the allergy section.
Glad you spoke of the (may contain...). I was confused about that the other day! That would be $117.68AUD, which is not bad. I usually spend give or take; $250AUD a fortnight, for my son and I.
I’ve decided to eat more plant based foods. Currently I’m not a vegan but want to slowly cut down on the amount of animal products that I eat. I would love to be completely vegan but started slowly I should get to my goal. Love your videos by the way. Also love your attempt on the British accent. Fan from 🏴
Love your channel! It's refeshing to see the ease into the vegan lifestyle...Thank you!!!! I recently transitioned to pescatarian..but mostly plant based foods.
Wow I think I will be buying sushi rice Japanese/ Korean rice I like those kind too. I thought that the method of cooking was different but I did not know that is actually a different kind of rice. I like things goey snd sticky. Love you rose all this is eye opening
