Great explanation on intial.start up. I use Valentine's 5-30 which has zinc additive and has never let me down. Also I use remote starter switch so I can work carb if need be or readily see leaks. Thanks again for through step by step.

We just built my 383 and set it in Nova to break in the cam 5 minutes in a spring lock came off of a exhaust valve on the number 5 cylinder he dropped it all the way down hit the piston and the Piston pushed it right back up in the valve guide and just made a missing sound, so we pulled the valve cover and seen what happened I had to pull the head and have it reworked never had no more trouble..

I went with a flat tappet also on my 383. I got Delphi lifters with my Bullet Cam. Fortunately break in went fine but I was nervous the whole time. I think I used Drive break in oil. Thanks for the videos.

I put a flat tappet cam in my 700 horse 555. Nothing wrong with them. It holds up just fine. It never sees over 6000 rpm and it definitely doesn't need to to make power.

Yeah. They’re great unless you screw up the break in or if the machining is off.

@@Shop209thats exactly what I tell people. Eventually ill do a phase 2 on my motor and I will do a roller setup but when you live in the real world, you have a budget and you can choose to get it on the road or wait and save for the best of the best....i like to drive lol

I have a junk distributor with the cam /distributor gear removed , I add a drill to top of the distributor and spin the drill , I have a breaker bar on the crank bolt , as the drill pumps up oil pressure I turn the crank a quarter turn , I pump up the oil pressure until all push Rods are squirting oil out of the rocker arms , then it's time to Fire

@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 7 месяцев назад
You absolutely should not do that with a flat tappet cam that's not broken in yet. The engine should be turned minimally to keep as much cam lube on the lobes as possible for start up. Spinning it like that running the oil pump will wash more cam lube off while scaping it off with the lifters. The break-in lube on the lobes is more important than oil on them for first startup. You should still prime the pump but you're wasting time and setting yourself up for failure doing what you explained. That is a good practice on a roller cam engine though.😎👍

@@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 , Did you NOT read my comment ? I rotate the engine a quarter turn at a time , I spin the oil pump for about 3 to 5 minutes then I rotate another quarter turn then another 3 to 5 minutes of the oil pump , I only rotate the engine maybe 2 or 3 complete rotations it doesn't take very much when 40 pounds of oil pressure is going through every single hole in the entire engine , I have built more small block Chevy engines than your entire family has fingers and toes , 40+ years ! I think I know what I doing and I haven't had ONE single Failure So as for turned minimally , is 2 or 3 complete Revolutions considered minimally ? setting myself up for Failure ? You must build Frods No , I didn't spell it wrong , It's pronounced fraud

@@jimthomas1989 I'm glad you got lucky, you must build low lift low spring pressure stock low compression rebuilds. If you think you are doing it right don't get buthurt, try to agree to disagree. Merry Christmas.

I've run flat tappet cams in dirt track racing for years back in the 80s and early 90s and really never had any problems, I'm seeing videos posted all over the internet with flat tappet cam failures. Has something changed with the metals or oils or something? I run low lift rocker ratio for break ins but otherwise i just prime my oil pump get oil circulation and fire it up. Once broke in change my rocker arms and off to the races. I really don't trust these synthetic oils now days i run royal purple in all my vehicles but i don't have anything new to require these so called special oils.

A few things happened, more aggressive love designs with a higher hydraulic intensity, they took additives out of oil since all newer cars use roller cams, and only a few manufacturers make lifters. The quality of flat tappet lifter and cam machining is all over the place.
