I have the Lee Single Stage press and its been great. Not fast for pistol rounds but I love it for rifle. I've been reloading .223 for a while now and tiring out some different powders from Hodgon. I found that I got the best results from the Varget and the CFE223 at the 10% below the max load. I've been using local projectiles call Campro, they have a good 55 gr BT. It was a great series of videos and you have a new subscriber.

On the TC Compass, if you remove one of the 2 nuts on the trigger, and replace it with a washer 1/2 as thick, you can get an amazing creep/overtravel free trigger with about a 2-1/2 pound pull. I locktite the other nut as well. Damn near a free upgrade. I can bounce the cocked rifle on the butt pad pretty hard, and the striker will not fall.

That is the handload kit that I use right there and I find that it is quick and consistent every time all for about 200 bucks plus dies. They no longer sell that bench priming tool with the deluxe package though. Instead you get a hand priming tool which doesn't bother me a bit. I full length size my brass every time. I'd rather not risk tearing up my bolt trying to lock a cartridge that has not been sized. And with 6.5 Creedmoor, I do not see a difference between neck and full resizing, just like you. Thanks for the video. I love the practical value of that set up.

i purchased a tc compass in 204 Ruger so i could do a very similar project, i wanted to see how accurate i could make a very inexpensive rifle. i installed m carbo trigger spring kit, glass bedded, lapped lugs, and with precision reloads i shot a .209 group today with many 1/4 inch groups with rifles under 300 bucks thats simply amazing. tc compass rifles are built cheap fit and finish is cheap the trigger in factory form is not so hot but they are capable of amazing accuracy in this price point. also for this extreme low budget project i used a vortex copperhead 4x12x44 scope and even though they are cheap they are a killer value the clarity and function are very good for what you spend.

Added a roll of 8mm cast lead bullets (4-6 ounce in 2 baggies) then closed cell foam in to the stock, pushing the "roll" as far forward as possible lowered recoil a bit (6.5 Creedmore) made a diy cheek riser as well with same closed cell foam sport wrap and moleskin.

Just got my TC yesterday in 5.56/223 and while using surplus milspec 5.56 ammo and got 3 shot less than 1 MOA at 100 yrds. Quite pleased, not sure why would need to spend $800 to $1000 for a hunting rifle when can get this type of result with a budget rifle. Yes it is utilitarian which is what I wanted. love this rifle and will be interesting as start extending the range and try various loads.

I appreciate that in the video, you use the entire Lee reloading kit and Lee dies/shell holder to obtain the accuracy you demonstrated possible. A lot of folks get bent out of shape over particular brand names of reloading gear and conclude that because they produce inexpensive (cheap) equipment, that it translates to inferior ammunition. That ammo you loaded is more accurate than most shooters are capable of shooting. Well done.

I also had good groups with Varget but wasn't seeing the velocity nodes or speed I expected from the combo. Ended up with 26.6g H4895, full prep Winchester case, CCI 400 primer, 53g V-Max at 2.330" COAL .020 off the lands. 3300fps, low single digit SD's over the Magnetospeed, and literally one ragged 5-shot hole from a TC Venture (same barrel).

Gavin, have you ever considered rebarreling one of your T/C Compass rifles with an aftermarket barrel? I recently did mine using a Remington 700 Remage barrel from Criterion (Northland Shooters Supply) and then had the counterbore machined off to leave only about 0.050" (matched the old Compass barrel) and removing about 1/8 inch of the end of the barrel threading to allow the gas port to be unimpeded for a case rupture/primer piercing situation. No one ever talks about re-barreling a Compass because its an inexpensive rifle to begin with, but if you were to use it as the basis of a budget precision build, ostensibly one would shoot it out enough to need a new barrel...and this seems like a relatively easy way to do that in a market that doesn't seem to be interested in after market components for a good but inexpensive rifle.

The Hornady Concentricity gauge on your bench I have the same model and found the spring loaded adjustment shaft had .008 of an inch play in the housing ( side to side/up/down weblewoble). How does Hornady expect to find case concentricity when there is end shake in the handle housing. I checked several of these at two LGS and found them all to have end shake. I took mine to a machinist and he installed a bushing to correct the slop.

I bought four T/C Compass at the great Gander Mt Fire sale with rebate they were $170 each. 30-06, 270, 308 and 6.5. Kinda redundant but I couldn't pass that deal up. All came in under 1 MOA with factory. 308, with first handloads .6 MOA. These are the best value out there I think neck and neck with the Savage Axis. Wife's 243 with first handloads came in .87 How far have we come when factory "cheapo" rifles out of the box can do this with factory ammo?

Hi UR! May I ask how often do you clean your barrel and what method you use to do so? PS: I'm from South Africa and own a Savage Axis II in .223 (basically the cheapest one to buy here in 223) and get results like you have gotten with 55Gr Hornady V-Max all day long. Thanks!

If you have a lathe, you could make muzzle thread caps of slightly different lenghts. Change the length, change the barrel harmonics with a particular load. You can tune the rifle to a load instead of load to the rifle.

I never really saw much accuracy improvement neck sizing over FL sizing, although the runout tool showed neck sizing with the collet die to be really low. I think the best reason to neck size is case life, I saw double the life of brass but eventually the bolt won't close, in my case that was only after two reloads. Annealing has given me some cases with over 20 reloads, which get tossed simply for safety reasons. My current program is to neck size twice, FL size once and anneal; neck size twice, FL size once with anneal; etc.
@Ultimatereloader

@bisonuberti
@bisonuberti 6 лет назад
Ryan... Nor have I. After I fire-form my .223's and neck size my cases it is difficult to control the headspacing on the cases with the setting of the die. I like a very tight and close 0.001 headspace on my cases when I develop and reload my .223 precision ammunition. I have just about given up on neck sizing only because I am OCD about the headspacing on my ammo. Good comments. Shoot lots and stay safe.
@RyanMcIntyre
@RyanMcIntyre 6 лет назад
Anyone I've talked to that's serious about precision rifle ammunition FL sizes predominantly, and competition has brought out that as being the most consistent method. I think neck sizing will become a relic method soon, and with the availability of cheaper and better annealing tools, won't be a process anyone uses anymore. I still do it, but I think it's habit more than anything.

I have 6 .223s. None of them are semi-auto. One single shot, the rest are bolts. I have a Savage 112V that was bought in the late eighties, no slick trigger, or stock. It shoots better than most others. It has a 26" varmint weight barrel. That thing is a tack driver.

@George-nt8uw
@George-nt8uw 6 лет назад
Probably too late for you but for others who would like to know, get the Lee Precision Classic turret and you will not be sorry. I basically use mine to prime all brass at one time then I use the powder system to powder up all shells as Jerking the press through any other operation drops charges that can vary widely. The last two operation (bullet seating and crimping) I do sequentially on each cartridge. I like having all my dies on one disc instead of changing on a single die press. For pistol loads I go through the normal sequence of four operations. All sizing I do as part of brass prep. I also use the Lee Precision quick trim with great success. Don't forget that Lee Precision will custom make some tools for a very reasonable price. This company is great for folks who want to get things done. Lee rules.

I have a Ruger Hawkeye M77 Predator that retails for about $1000 (I got it as a gift). I shot at the range with Fed Premium 77 Grain Sierra Match King and got 3 sub-1/2 MOA shots but then two flyers at about 1 inch. I can't get consistent groups with it and I've tried 2 or 3 other "premier quality" ammo. Your reloading option seems to solve the problem. Frankly that's a little disappointing that for $23 per box of 20 the manufacturers can't make a high quality round. Would you be willing to correspond off line to discuss getting into reloading?
