Most power outages in the U.S. are of short duration. A short power outage is NOT a reason for having a stockpile of long-term food storage. You want such a stockpile for longer lasting challenges, such as six months or more of unemployment or several years of world war that disrupts international trade. Do spend your food storage money on dry foods that are package for long-term storage. That way you do not have the added expense of replacing/rotating shelf stable, "wet" canned goods every few years. Buy the dry food and package it to store for 20 years, store it in a cool, vermin-free location and just forget about the dry food until you need it in an emergency. Canned or dehydrated vegetables and fruit LACK enough Vitamin C compared to fresh, raw vegetables and fruit. Make sure you have enough vitamin tablets or at least some ascorbic acid power if you will be consuming only canned or dried foods for several weeks or longer. You do not want to develop scurvy on a diet that lacks enough Vitamin C. Your most affordable way to build a stockpile of long-term food storage is to either package dry foods at home (Mylar bags + oxygen absorbers) or buy it from a reliable source that has low prices. The Home Storage Centers, in every U.S. state, are run by LDS Church volunteers and have long-term food storage items at low cost. There is even an online store if you want home delivery and the price listed for #10 cans is for SIX cans plus there is a low delivery charge.
