Thanks for watching my budget road bike build and upgrade. This is my 2010/2011 Trek Alpha 1.1 Road Bike. I bought it second hand in 2015 and I've sort of neglected it, I've ridden it enough to realise what I wanted to change about it - so I've decided it's time to give it a new lease of life. I’m going to refurbish it by giving it a rebuild and an upgrade.
Firstly, I strip off the old components. Then I give it a thorough clean. Then I build it back up with an almost full Tiagra Groupset.

Hi guys, I've just uploaded my review of the Shimano Tiagra 4700 Groupset that I used in this video, hope it's helpful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d0TTnIyA9yk.html

Love the low key approach, I'd raise the saddle and drop the handlebars but that's more of a road racing position - but you might still get more power out of legs if you raised the saddle. Awesome bike tool set-up

Few things: lube every thread and surface that moves inside other surface. BB threads, crank axle, pedals. First, it'll keep moisture away and secondly you'll be glad you did when it's time to remove them.
@TheSlowworms
@TheSlowworms 3 года назад
Hiya 👋 because all the parts were new they came with thread lock already on the threads. You can see the bottom bracket had a load of silicone grease in it at 6:00 in the video. The only bit that didn’t have any sort of retaining compound was the pedals because I had used them before, so I put anti-seize compound on them.

Love the build. I also put that bar tape (the very orange version) on a Decathlon RC520 I ‘gravellised’. Realised afterwards you’ll get the white ‘fizik’ on one drop and none on the other. If you want to match, you need to completely unreel 1 tape and start from the wrong end. As it’s a gravel frankenbike, it kind of works, but on a full roadie I think the OCD might kick in!
@TheSlowworms
@TheSlowworms 3 года назад
ah thanks mate! That sounds like a cool project. Have you got any photos? That is exactly what I thought and that is the only thing I would change about them! I would rather it just didn't have Fizik written on them. I didn't bother worrying about the lettering in the end because I was too worried about getting the spacing the same on both sides 😆 I've heard good things about the new Decathlon Riverside 920 gravel bike. I would love to get my hands on one.

I was really frustrated with the way my bike felt while out on rides to the point I almost tossed it and bought a whole new one. Luckily I had some sense and took it to the bike shop for a much needed Tune up on a 13 year old bike- the replaced all the cables/cable housing l, and trued my wheels, and now it drives like a dream! I have the old SORA shifting, and maybe in a year or two I will upgrade to something new, but for now I am totally satisfied and excited to be riding again!

A few people have said that funnily enough. A few people have said the Tiagra is very robust as well so I guess the 105 from ten years ago was robust
@rangersmith4652
@rangersmith4652 Год назад
@@TheSlowworms 105 from _over 20_ years ago was robust, fast, and smooth. The main "advance" we've seen since then is more cogs in the cluster. Many riders, with some exceptions for steep climbs, don't use more than 6 or 8 ratios no matter how many they have, so having more seems of limited utility.

FYI -- You can adjust the pitch of the brake pad on these types of brakes. So the brake caliper probably wasn't bent. Also some people like to adjust the angle of the brake pad to avoid squealing. Although with modern brake pads they only really squeal if there is a lot of aluminium from the rim embedded in the pad. You can just rub the pad on a flat pavement to take off the top layer with the aluminium dust embedded.
@TheSlowworms
@TheSlowworms 3 года назад
Yeah I tried to toe it in but I couldn’t adjust it enough. In all honesty the callipers weren’t much more than pads would’ve been on their own. I guess because nobody wants callipers with long arms? 🤷‍♂️

I have a 1.1 2013. I was thinking of doing something similar since my shifter broke and my cassette and chain is pretty much worn down. You didn't have any issue fitting a 10 speed on the wheel/hub? That is my main concern and it is hard to determine these things. I have Weinmann 700c LP18 rims and I think the stock hubs. Any advice? I'm thinking I can keep the stock cranks as they seem fine, but not sure. I can replace those once they are all worn down.

It’s really good to see people build bikes when it’s like realistically possible to do, the amount of vids I’ve seen where people say they are gonna build a bike and then buy some £900 groupset 😂
@TheSlowworms
@TheSlowworms 3 года назад
I know exactly what you mean. I didn’t go mountain biking for years because I had a really rubbish, badly made bike and couldn’t afford a good one. In the end I thought sod it and bought a cheap new one with good reviews. Everyone’s got a better bike than me but I don’t care because I have so much fun on it and unlike everyone else I’m not worried about chipping the paintwork. Bikes and bike parts are so expensive. If I’m honest with you, I actually wanted to get Sora components (the level below Tiagra) but I couldn’t find them anywhere 😆

Technically the most sound upgrade. I would just upgrade to 105 cranks and dura ace shifters

Kmc makes tire levers that double as quick link removers. They are extremely thick plastic levers and i swear by them for most jobs. If i would look for better id go for shop quality vinyled steel core levers from park tool, pedros or the like.

That’s some great knowledge, thanks Devon. I’d never heard of vinyl covered steel levers. I’m gonna get some of those and hopefully they’ll last for a few years 👍

Might be me doing it sometimes thrice a day: But why not get the saddle post out when you change the saddle? Easier to work and you want to move the saddle post every few year before it gets stuck in the frame...

Thanks, I really appreciate it! It was just over £400 in the end but I had to do a bit of hunting. Just about every part came from a different website because the prices varied massively. Out of interest, do you think you’d be interested in a quick 2 minute video reviewing the groupset? That’s what I’m thinking of doing next.

This bike was really easy to assemble ru-vid.comUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
