Remember folks this is mainly for the beginner (Bait fishing) trout fisherman or for somebody looking to simplify what's in their tackle bag. If you're waiting on more advanced products, or tips stay tuned! More to come. **Important note for those concerned about lead weights** While I understand there are environmental concerns on the topic, these weights/fishing items are still legal for purchase and it is the right for anyone with money to buy them. I'm not going to tolerate the judgement of fisherman that choose to buy a legally purchased product. When or if the product is outlawed, we can re-visit the topic. Keep it civil in the comments or you will be banned from the channel. If that doesn't work for you, Unsub the channel and move on
My cheapest Trout Setup >>>>> Trout hook, small bobber, split shot weights, and either nightcrawlers or shrimp. Everything for just under $8 …. lol Or just buy a couple rooster tails or trout magnets.. lol
First time back fishing in 25 years - I used to fish a lot. I went out with my son, daughter, and grandson all newbies. I followed some of your advice to no avail then I switched back to what I remember doing back in the day then - BAM, seven fish ranging from 16” to 22 ½”. Before going out, the bait shop told us they had only seen one 12” in the last three weeks and there had been no plants in the last two months. What was the bait? Mostly salmon eggs and some power bait. We did not use any scents, but I used, exclusively, the hooks that you do not. All I am saying is to “each his own”, find what works for you, no need to put down the stuff that does not work for you.
4lb. Flouro.. 2 splitshot weights 18" from a #8 baithook holding 2 white or orange powereggs. 1/8 oz. Silver kastmaster and a 1/8 oz. Black rooster tail. Caught over 150 rainbow trout in 2019.
As for lead weights, one of my local stocked lakes already barred lead weights. As I frequently fish there, I've opted to just go with the steel sinkers in my trout kit.
My go-to's at my Walmart are Joe's Flies and Kastmasters. Just depends if you're fishing stocked trout vs Native trout. Like the mice tails too. I make my own leaders with 4lb fluorocarbon line and use tungsten bullet weights.
Right on , I use those Carolina keeper as well from time to time in place of a swivel . I think your wally is better stocked than mine in Riverside. Gonna get me those Thomas lures , thanks for the info , 👍🏽
I prefer Joe’s Flies all different sizes but they are a WV company and WV has some of the best trout fishing anywhere. Power Bait anything salmon peach or corn yellow. Depending on the depth your fishing will determine how big a lure or weight you should use.
I make my own garlic scent. Garlic, garlic flavored oil, a little non iodized salt pan fried everything together in low heat. 10 minutes or so and I have unlimited supply of garlic oil. Dip or spray on baits or lures you use. Limits every time.🎣🎣🎣
That's cool man. When I very first started trout fishing that's what I did because I read it in a western outdoors newspaper that they were biting on garlic and I didn't know you could even buy garlic scent at the sporting goods store 😄 the homemade brew did work.. although I prefer just using bang now.
That drinking game worked out had a beer in my hand any way this video also helps since my tackle box got stolen I had some spinners from the 20s in it and cant find any like them
Mini jigs, berkely atomics are available at most Walmart or big 5 sporting goods. Brown/green, pearl white, yellow and black is all I've been using this season. Sometimes the trout will only hit a certain color. Just gotta rotate thru all the your colors till you find it. Also been seeing my friend kill it with a wacky rigged trout worm and a slip shot weight a few inches up his line.
Heck yeah...thanks for the post! Walmart's jig selection has gone down hill over the last few years... been on a steady decline. I wish they had a better selection going. But they have to follow those plana-grams that tell them what to stock and how to stock those shelves.
Carolina keepers slip and do not stay in place, ever. P-line fluorocarbon is a good line. Garlic and green pumpkin are my favorite powerbait. Thanks for the vid!
Thesse tips were very helpful for me i went out twice this week and caught one both days . One on mice tail and one on corn power bait , i lost the better one because i didnt have a net i will make sure to keep my net next time around. Thanks for schooling us rookies !
Kastmasters - well any spinner or spoon - works well when they are fresh but a day or 2 later you won't even get a follow as they became educated. Powerbait family - rapala or flies work much longer. Happy fishing everybody
i go to cabela's for all my ultralight fishing stuff. i do a lot of trout fishing and i always use very little small lite tackle like a size 1/32 oz, a 1/64 oz, a 1/24 oz and a 2/32oz. cabela's have a lot more choices when it comes to trout, sunnies, bluegills, crappies and rockbass fishing.
They definitely have a better selection at Cabela's but their prices are much higher almost double for the same gear. This video is about budget fishing... But I feel you on that selection
Hey UO, what color Izorline XXX do you buy? I'm only seeing the bulk spool in smoke. Have you seen a correlation between line color and bites when you get down into the 2 lbs range? Thanks!
First off thanks for the info appreciate the channel. May I ask what's the reason you dont like other lines they have at Walmart such as Berkley vanish. I use 2 lb test Berkley Vanish but definitely would like to know why it's not good before I take it off my reel. I notice Izorline is not flourocarbon line its polymer monofilament. Do you use flourocarbon leader? If so which one if not is monofilament better for trout? I thought flourocarbon was less visible. Im Just someone who's always willing to learn from someone else's experience. Sometimes I catch a few sometime none but I always have fun trying.😎
Mono has more stretch.. good for 2lb hook sets or bait hits. Less memory which means less bird's nest while casting lures etc. It's thicker so it sinks slower... Important in some applications. Way cheaper without much difference in strength. 6000 yards for $20. I've caught many fish over 5-10lbs with 2lb and no issue with break offs. also izorline 2lb test has the same diameter and strength as izorline in 4 lb test. 2# = 4# No need to wet line before knots. Visibility isn't much issue with the izorline...fish don't seem to care. I use izorline 2lb as a main line and a leader. If there's any downside I would say it is heat sensitive...don't leave it in your car including in a hot car on the reel it will melt or damaged the line.
What walmart are you at and in what state??? Here in Los Angeles California my walmart has the smallest selection of fishing gear and they rarely ever stock it up decently
My walmart has alot bigger selection im suprised, ima go check it out this week for some lures, as far as salmon eggs go i only get fire balls or whatever there called they get me alota bites here in Wyoming
I need to go back to mine in the near future, it's been about a month for me. As for the fireballs, my walmart had a HUGE clearance on those a while back.... I bought 50+ jars @ $1 a piece. No joke. Great to have ya'll on the channel from Wyoming. Love your state
Think you could throw in a mice tail rigging and technique video? I have never had any luck fishing mice tails but I'm sure I'm just doing it wrong... Great video, me and my brothers have learned a ton from you. Keep up the good work, it's very appreciated! PS. Silverwood is filling back up and we had a good day fishing it last Saturday(2/15)
Old now but I would say never sleep on rooster tails and mepp's aglia spinners. Number 0 and 1 are absolutely fire when bait isn't working and just a slow steady retrieve will have them after it and smashing
What do you mean they're going to be outlawed? I definitely need some of those carolina keepers. I use a swivel, bead, and egg sinker. But the keeper will keep it more low profile.
First of all, I avoid Wally World like the corona thing going around these days. I once tried to buy some red worms out of Wally World. I opened the container and it only had the dirt medium in there, not one worm! I notified the "associate" he looked in it and told me that customers pick them out and place them in their pockets. He then proceeded to place the container back in the frig for the next sucker. As far as weights, I saw a guy named John on You Tube who made sinkers out of lengths of hollow paracord filled with BB shots. I've been using those every since in salt and fresh water. Haven't had one snag yet. I patronize a local large fishing tackle shop off of the 605 freeway. Their prices are very competitive. They have everything needed for all types of fishing and there is a killer Mexican restaurant next door!
I feel ya... For a lot of folks wally world is it. Especially last second. The custom weights you're talking about is popular in the steelhead and salmon fishing Industry. I make them with buckshot.
Another reason to avoid buying line at WallyWorld - bought a bulk spool of Ande 20 lb. (getting ready for a tuna trip down San Diego way and I was in a hurry), went to wind it on...looked a bit funky, took a double wrap around my hand and gave it a good yank...maybe 3 lb. breaking strength. Last time I bought line from WalMart. Definitely go elsewhere. Far as Rooster Tails - they'll work sometimes (like any lure - throw it enough and SOMETHING will hit it) but my experience is it's just tough to throw one far enough to do much good. Maybe trolling, but I personally like Mepps Black Fury & Panther Martins. As always YMMV.
Just note that monos deteriorate overtime especially under light exposure. So for weekend warriors 300yards are fine for 1 or 2 seasons. After that you may want to get braid + flouro anyway from serious brands if you are getting addicted 😄
I love the "all this other shit sucks." I like walmart for sabiki rigs and wide gap offset hooks for swimbaits. Those owner mosquito hooks are a steal, they never have them in stock where I am at.
For me I just get 6 lbs to 8 lbs line with the smallest lead split shot for how fast the water is moving and how deep for stream fishing I want to keep it floating with the water with out a bobbers on my line. So the bait goes to the fish like stuff floating in the wild. Just how my dad teach me long time ago. I like good old baits.
Depends on your budget really... But you can get a 7' UL Shakespear rod at walmart for $20 that will get the job done. I recommend spending more money on a reel... 1000 series Daiwa Legalis LT Other good rods, Daiwa Presso, Daiwa Spinmatic
Stick with what works for you! Every fisherman should do that. I've used just about every line available. Haven't found better than Izorline. So that's what I use
Number 8 or number 10 mosquito hook. Go through the middle of the egg and push the egg up to where the eye of the hook is. Make sure the hook is exposed
Walmart sticks regional they sell izorline in San Diego great stuff the maxima still preferred in 2-3-4-6-+8 for leaders best knots stiff until pulled on its goat rope in larger diameters I get complaints of memory …it’s wet line put hot water on it and it goes away the xxx smoke izorline works well 10-%?saltwater guys like it as well! Maxima best if you order it in bulk service spoils from anglers arsenal in lake side ca the Cassidy’s they do mail order all over the globe #one in maxima sales big in Alaska this year ! It has gone up in price just like everything else but it will last you a long time store at moderate room temp in plastic bag then in tupaware containers in the dark like a cabinet protector from humidity works in bays and surf fishing and offshore a little hard to throw in large diameters but get it wet with hot water keep it wet you will never lose a fish and it pulls boats out of mud! Goat rope!!!!🎣
In the description now.. but here ya go! www.ebay.com/itm/Izorline-XXX-Super-Co-Polymer-Fishing-Line-Smoke-Choose-Size-2-60lb/274143062453?var=574264689552
If you live in Scranton pa we have one stop bait shop great prices for Night walker's If you need a ugly stick 50 bucks Dicks the same poll is one hundred and twenty five dollars
Depends on where you go but I would get the variety pack that comes in a box with different size split shots. You dont need a swivel. All I use is a 6lb to 8lb line with a 14 treble hook. I bend barbs down so I can pull it out of trout easier. Get 2 types of bait.. the Berkeley power dough bait chartreuse with extra scent and Berkley bubble gum worm pink with a number 8 hook so it floats. Just position you sinker about 8 inches from the bait and move it up to 10 then 12 etc. Until you can get into their strike zone. The power bait wrap it around the treble hook like a mini football and make sure it floats. That's all you need...have fun!!!
@@TroutWest I went to a Walmart today and did not have the scents. They usually do. I am going to a place that got stocked today. Is there a reason for your favorite powerbait flavors?
@@fishingwithyoshi With powerbait, they come pre-scented but if you can use the Garlic flavored scents... that's not a bad thing. I spray everything that goes in the water with Garlic, or Shrimp/Krill. IF you can't find Garlic spray or Krill, try out Anchovy for Trout too. It works.
I suppose it would work but a better option is just to find garlic oil at the store and try that . Another option I used to do was put garlic powder into olive oil and make it highly concentrated with garlic
@@TroutWest I’m ready to try anything at this point. My dad, bro and myself when to a stocked trout lake and got skunked twice. (Yes there are fish. We saw them jumping.) I also even made inline spinner lures for that fond hope of trout fishing. We tried everything that day. Inline spinners, 2 different kinds of trout dough (pink and brown), powerbait pink night crawlers, tiny spoons and even a small top water mouse. We were sitting over a deep part of the lake, about 18 feet. We rigged very small slip shot sinkers to get our lures down deep enough and stayed until dark. Nothing. 😑 I’ll take walleye fishing any day. (Greetings from Saskatchewan Canada)
Make sure you try some Berkeley products like Berkeley mice tails and Berkeley gulp eggs or power eggs. Use a number 10 or a number eight mosquito Hook by gamakatsu or owner make sure your leaders are really long in the summer there's a lot of weed growth and you need to get above that weed line so you need to be about a four five foot leader. Spray with garlic or even shrimp flavored scent. If you have shrimp in your local store cheap cut a tiny piece of shrimp off and add that to your micetail that will also trigger bites
@@TroutWest we had those berkley power worms. (The tail part of a mouse tail) Spoke with some other anglers and honestly the trips we had simply sound like typical trout fishing. 😅
The power worms work really good too but you need to make sure that you're using very light hooks like mosquito hooks if you use the wrong kind they will not float.
You definitely could, When I first started trout fishing I was mixing olive oil and garlic or Corn Oil and Garlic. Bang is just stronger though and easy to use with the spray
It's not the worst, but it get brittle in cold water, tends to lash and coil up when casting jigs and lures. It's fine for most bait fishing applications. For the money, there's nothing better than Izorline xxx
For all you who use baits, stop, one of the first times I ever went fishing I went to cabelas and asked for recommend trout lures, they gave me panther martins and a few others like Thomas bouyant, almost every cast with the panther Martin fire tiger I caught 8 fish in 15 minutes you guys just sit there for hours maybe getting 2
Well for now there is no push to get rid of it but in the coming years it could become a hot topic again and there could be sudden removal of the product. Overall there are shortages of product because of the pandemic and many people are fishing that didn't use the fish
Why buy the weights they are about to outlaw? If you’re caught fishing with illegal gear you’re in for a big fine and a loss of all your fishing gear, house, car l, boat. Not worth a couple 98c packs of weights
Salmon eggs don't work in Cali ? Sorry, I'm going to have to disagree with you there. In 60 years of fishing the Eastern Sierra's I've caught THOUSANDS of trout with salmon eggs. I don't like to use bait unless I'm getting skunked, and power bait hangs on to the hook better, but my experience goes back to when power bait didn't exist. Eggs never fail to catch stocked trout, period...
Should probably watch the video again. I said in most applications or most waters in California. There are of course some spots that can productive with salmon eggs. Settle down
