Tonight I head to Kings Tor on Dartmoor where the weather is forecast to be around 30-35mph winds and non stop rain. It didn't fail to deliver. The wind increased through the night and the tent suffered damage.......... but it faired extremely well.
I was also joined by Daniel of Kernow Camps who is doing a 100 mile charity dog walk for bone cancer charity so please check his channel below and find his videos with links on how to donate to such a worthy cause if you can.

I didn't hear a thing an slept like a log that night, just 4 miles away...mind you, 3ft thick walls and double glazing does make a difference :D Good on you for persevering, personally I will only bail in daylight if I'm alone, safer to hunker down and see it through than get hurt slipping in the dark and open.

Yeah I decided not to wear earplugs that night. If I had I would have missed the vestibule door ripping open and flapping which would have caused major issues in that wind. I think the Lansham performed better than I though. Was rock steady inside just those bloody door clips that failed. Will be sorting that next. Thanks for watching 🙏👍

I was in a 1 pro up on the high street in 60 mph gusts at the end of October last year . Very similar experience . Nothing to stop the vestibule zip coming undone . I steaked It all too tight , and the dyneema “reinforced” areas tore round the dyneema . Also rain drove in big time into the “anti condensation” gutter/ ventilator right at my vesper . When the wind eased slightly , but the rain was still lashing I literally pulled up my tent in my arms and ran screaming down the high street at 3 am . Fun times . Won’t forget it in a hurry

Ah thanks Greg. I'll check the account to see if there's an issue, shouldn't affect being outside UK. I think I'd probably swap the carbon pole with one of my trekking poles so I could lower it. Wasn't too fussed about it being higher in the wind was thinking more for snow or really heavy rain but I suppose it would help in the wind too. Cheers for watching and commenting 👍

🤣 Looks like you had quite a night Michael! I do most of my camping in the Dark Peak area of Derbyshire. The first 3 or 4 inches of ground is often just loose mossy peat with no holding power for the pegs. Tried various different options but the best I've discovered is the 10" Tornado supplied by Rock + Run. The twisted corkscrew shape seems to really hold well and of course you've got that extra length compared to standard pegs. Don't know if these would work as well on Dartmoor. Seems like the tent survived but it's got to be considered a fail in my book if you had to stay awake all night praying the bloody thing wasn't going to blow away. It's on nights like that when the Hilleberg Soulo doesn't seem such an extravagant waste of money after all! Take care.
@NoviceWildCamper

Thanks buddy. I think if I had a spare peg or two I would have Goe back to sleep and trusted it bit yes, it was a hard night. I would have bailed buy I just wanted to see it though and see if it survived. I was looking at the easton pegs as they've had good reports. Problem is with dartmoor, the majority of pitches on the tors have granite an inch or two under the soil so getting longer ones in could be a struggle. Can never have too many pegs though 🤣 cheers for watching 👍
@Mr.TravelingHat-w7w

The tent is set up incorrectly: you need to minimize the length of the four side guy lines, then set up the trekking poles and use two additional stakes to secure the vestibules separately.
@NoviceWildCamper
@NoviceWildCamper Месяц назад
No it's not. I know how to set this tent up better than most. If you use two pegs on the vestibule you won't be able to get out without removing a peg. That's not the way this tent works. In extreme weather you can guy both to stop zip creep bit even 3ful don't supply enough pegs for that as it's not designed that way. Check my mods and set up review and you'll see what I mean.
@NoviceWildCamper
@NoviceWildCamper Месяц назад
Plus if you minimise the corner guy outs before setting the pole you'll get zero height or length needed to use it properly. Otherwise they'd be a fixed length. That's the whole point in having tensioners there. If you make the totally tight then set it up, when it sags due to stretching in the rain you'll have zero guy line to make it tighter.
@Mr.TravelingHat-w7w
@Mr.TravelingHat-w7w Месяц назад
@@NoviceWildCamper I'm sorry, but I also own this tent and made the same mistake. It seems you're not fully understanding the suggestion, and perhaps I haven't been clear enough. It also feels like you're intentionally misunderstanding the advice. For example, the two additional stakes are meant to secure each vestibule individually (without using the horn clips), not both in the same vestibule. Using two stakes for one vestibule is unnecessary and obvious. The zipper is strong, so implying otherwise isn’t fair based on what I've read. Regarding the four corner tensioners, they're meant to adjust the height. You can get the correct tension immediately by tightening them properly and positioning the poles correctly (which may take several tries at first, as it did for me). After that, you can set up the trekking poles. If you try this method, you'll find it works better, especially in high winds. I survived 90 km/h gusts in Iceland using this setup, while other methods failed. With this configuration, I reached to experience some condensation ;) If I wasn't clear enough, I'll try to explain myself again.
@NoviceWildCamper
@NoviceWildCamper Месяц назад
@Mr.TravelingHat-w7w I'm not confusing anything. I didn't say use two stakes for one vestibule door. I said if you use a stake on each vestibule you can't open either door without reaching all the way outside to remove the guy line from the peg. And still, the side guy lines have to be the same when using a fixed pole like I was using so you can't adjust the height. And if it was fully tightened then when the material stretches in the rain you will have to remove and replace each corner stake to tighten it again so no, you don't have them fully tightened.
@Mr.TravelingHat-w7w
@Mr.TravelingHat-w7w Месяц назад
@@NoviceWildCamper I don't know it they updated the tent, but I could open perfectly the tent without removing anything from the peg. My tent has two eyelets, one for the fixed part of the vestibule and one for the part that opens. If I place the stake only in the fixed part, there is no problem. By tightening the tent enough, I didn't notice any stretching in the rain. It could also be that it stayed little wet for days, so the material might have already stretched.

I have the Pro version, but the aerodynamics are similar. Not really a foul weather tent tbh, but I've nonetheless been impressed by how far I can push it. That plastic ramshorn clip is cheap rubbish tat isn't it - particularly silly as it's installed at a point where it bears all the load from the front side of the tent. I have alleviated the stress by running an extra guyline from the exterior (hanging) loop provided at the apex, staking it forward of the vestibule stakeout. This makes the tent more stable too, plus allowing both doors to be tied back when desired.

Depends what you mean by foul weather. Rain and 20mph winds is foul weather. But so is rain and 80mph winds. Depends where you're taking it as to what weather it will take. £150 on a tent that will work up to 40mph and weighs 800g or £1000 for a hilleberg that will work in 80mph winds and weighs 3kg. You take your choices.

I'm genuinely surprised there's a Tor you haven't yet been to Mike!! You and Dan are fast becoming besties! Great shot of your camp at 3:29 Mike, the Tors do look like they make for great camp spots although quite exposed. The microphone in my opinion doesn't sound as good. Don't get me wrong it isn't bad quality but you sound different and I don't like change. It sounds like the football commentators from BBC local radio during the 90s. NO ALCOHOL!!! "Didn't have time" disgusting behaviour Mike just disgusting!!! haha. Love Dave the dog! Probably the best named dog ever. That Bluetooth thermometer sounds like a great idea if it works, I'll be interested to see. The Lanshan seemed to hold up in that wind (apart from when you became a part of the structure) but let's face it, it's not really designed for that kind of weather I guess. Well a bonus to take from that bad weather is that we could still hear you on the mic even with all the wind sound. That was a a fairly terrible night but nice one for seeing it out #NEVERBAIL Time to get advice from Dai on a new tent I think hahaha

I was impressed with the tent and I think with the new mods I'm doing to it, it would have survived better and without my help. I was adamant I wasn't going to bail though. If anything because I didn't want to walk back in that weather. Safer to be inside a failing tent holding on for dear life than out walking in high winds and pitch black. Hi Neil. Yes the side guy lines I just go round the trekking pole once. Makes enough of a difference to the internal space to be worth it, specially for me as I'm 6'4. The pole is from ebay. If you ask the guy he will make you one at 16mm. Mine is 125cm long with male grommet insert at the bottom to fix to the lanshan. I also recommend a mushroom top to relieve the pressure at the peak. The pole will also fit through the material loop toward the bottom of the zip near the bathtub floor so it holds it up nicely. 👍 www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Custom-made-carbon-fibre-er-tarp-poles-by-the-metre-14mm-diam-50-120g-m-/283330624191?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0
