Im 58 this year and im ashamed to say that i completley overlooked this great band as i grew up , thinking i knew it all about rock music?? Shame on me.
It's not too late! I'm not sure how many LP's they produced but take a listen to Bandolier - bloody fab. Along with The Goundhogs (Thank Christ for the Bomb) they were some of the best undergound bands from the 70's.
Budgie one of the most underated Hard rock bands of all time....real pioneers of the heavy rock genre...got all their albums and still proud to be a fan....R.I.P. Shelley Burke
Roderick Sloan I'm glad to read the Welsh connection I saw these in my nearest local small town as a teen I thought I remembered rightly they had travelled from Wales
Seen these when I was 17 Tameside theatre Ashton under lyne I only had the best of on vinyl an I can honestly say they was good an the amps did squeak power you could feel
@@mael-strom9707 Actually it's more like Iron Butterfly + Led Zep = Black Sabbath. Iron Butterfly was the first band to develop the "Goth" sound. This was because Doug Ingle, the organist, was taught to play keys by his father who played organ in church. So he developed a sort of "church" sound to his approach to playing. Coupled with Lead Guitarist Eric Brann (Braun), a 17 year old wonder kid guitarist who was a classically trained concert violinist. These two gave Iron Butterfly their trademark "Goth" sound. Next to show up in Black Sabbath.
@@eudymaverickmentor True, Iron Butterfly did develop that Goth sound but in my view (and it's only an opinion) they went on a psychedelic tangent with their riffs, relying too much ( again only an opinion) on that organ sound. Just a personal thing I guess, but I just could not get used to an organ sound in heavy metal riffs. Deep Purple and Uriah Heep got away with that sound but that genre of music for me is more like heavy rock than heavy metal. By the way I'm a fan of both genres, that's probably why I've defected to J-Metal from Japan with bands like Aldious, Destrose, Bloody Mary, Lovebites and upcoming wonders, a 3 piece band called Asterism.
@@mael-strom9707 Yes, I agree. That was my point. Iron Butterfly had the "Goth" sound but were not heavy rock. Ergo the "Goth" sound merged with Led Zeppelin gives you Black Sabbath. Heavy Rock/Metal Goth. Glad you found some bands you like. I am too old. I am 64. Have listened to so much good heavy rock, pop metal bores me. That's just me. The horrible shredding guitar work is just too repetitive, expected and tedious. Pyrotechnics with nothing to say. And personally, most women just don't have the balls to sing metal. Comes of as Brittany Spears sings metal elevator music. To each his own. Of course, Windy O had the balls to pull it off. Actually a later black sabbath riff, black sabbath was never that fast. They were sludgie and their fastest is like 65% of the speed of this. That changed in 1980 with dio but with ozzy it was slow.
@Redrooster nah there were faster heavy songs out there from that year but for what black Sabbath did it was pretty fast. I mean listen to helium head from Sir Lord Baltimore.
They were one of the pioneers of the riff laden rock from the 70 and 80s, so many bands covered their songs Metallica , Van Halen , go and listen to more of them, am shall you will appreciate them then. R.I.P Burke and John.
Great band and song. The only thing that I have a hard time with is the singer’s voice. same with Led Zep.. I love their music, but Robert Plant’s castrato pitch voice pisses me off. Never got used to it. It is not cool for a man to sing like he’s been emasculated, especially in hard rock/metal. It took a long time for people to stop… even Phil Anselmo was doing it at the beginning, like in shattered (albeit a great song). I might sound like an Ayatollah, but if you want high pitch voice, hire a woman.
No, Rusty cage is built on a phrase that Jimi hendrix played on occation just before one of the songs start off on the band of gypsys album. Can't remember which song, thou...!
Is Shelly became a roadie for Metallica and I thought that was kind of rudiment Metallica to do that but they did it I don't know if they ever came back and played after that I assumed they did I hope they did because that was a slap in the face to work Shelly I think love you all Patrick h a g e n !
Unclejohn1962 enuf said Metallica should stop doing any covers I didn't know they did this and some other iconic tracks and very badly I've heard better local Friday night pub covers bands shockenly bad
Um, in case you don't know, Metallica started as a cover band, playing songs by the likes of Budgie, Diamond Head, Angel Witch, Blitzkrieg, etc. They didn't "steal" anything. They are honoring those that inspired them.
Metallica, by covering old Budgie songs, make loads of money for Burke and co in royalties. Yeah, Budgie get paid for every time the Metallica covers get played on radio or in clubs.
I wonder if Dave Mustaine gets money every time kirk plays one of his solos off "the kill em all" album and um in case you don't know. if you were around in 83 like I was, the 1st kill em all album had am I evil on it, when it was released then it was taken off, um that was because they were sued, so yeah they weren't planning on paying anybody, they were forced to.. and yes I do think they had a lot of respect for some of the bands like diamond head... just saying that no other big band like metallica has COVERED so many songs on their albums.. most bands even if they are cover bands when they get signed and go into the studio don't do COVERS anymore...... oh and if you do have an original copy of the kill em all album read on the back it gives some credit to Dave for his stuff, but it doesn't say anything about diamond head.. Lars's exact words "we didn't tell anyone they were our songs but we didn't tell anyone they weren't"
deffo not Budgie lol, but they make it there own by playing everything that has nothing to do with the song they rip off haha(apart from Burke Shelley of course)
As a drummer myself, that initial drummer "fuckup" was actually caused by the guitarist. He was too muddy, and lost his cadence. It was clear as a blizzard at what point the drums were to kick in. This slapped-together version of Budgie is a legacy killer to me.
I dont believe they rehearsed very well, I honestly think John Thomas the guitarist was a last minute addition for this show. Cause Budgie had a different guitarist in the band at this point.
Funny how people always write "best unknown whatever" just because they never heard of them. Budgie is hardly an unknown band. A true rock fan would have to be living under a rock to have never heard "Breadfan".
@@eudymaverickmentor why do you think people like me never had heard from them before ? Budgie is one of my all time favorite rock, blues rock, progressive rock and heavy rock band and of course a great Funk rock band too (impeccable). Greetings from Austria
John was a friend of mine. I haven't seen for years dodnt even know he was gone. I have my guitar signed by him and pics with me with him. He was suffering from bad health for years and alcoholism . He was a lovely man do anything for any one.
@@SuperClaridge I met John when he lived in Earl's Court and was still playing with George Hatcher. He was a friend of my brother's - I had seen him at that years Reading Festival and really liked his guitar playing. He invited me to his flat and gave me some promo stuff, singles etc and got his Les Paul out. I met him again at the Poole Arts Centre gig with Ozzy (and Randy Rhoades). A very nice feller, very easy going and down to earth.
This is what happens when two old Budgie fans get to jam with Burke Shelley...lol Sadly, not a shadow of the original version with Tony Bourge and Ray Phillips - That guitarist is a fat, balding wanna-be rock-star wanker who massacred a once great song Iv'e heard better at jam nights down the local...worse than Metallicas' desecration IMO
+Sean Grant John Thomas is the guitarist and he has spent more years with Budgie than the original Tony Bourge. He's no wanna-be and sadly passed away recently!
Sean Grant - Show some respect you ignorant, rude troll, John Thomas was a superb Guitarist, and a fine gentleman, well respected and loved throughout the music industry.
