The First Ward built Buffalo and, to some degree, America. The industries that blossomed along the shores of the Buffalo River and Lake Erie are largely responsible for creating Buffalo as a manufacturing and industrial powerhouse from the early 1800s through the mid-1900s. Buffalo’s industrial strength fueled American economic growth and expansion.
“Buffalo’s First Ward,” airing Monday, March 2 at 8 p.m. on WNED-TV, tells the story of the treasured neighborhood through the voices of those who live there. The program, an original production of WNED-TV, captures feelings of camaraderie and through it teaches us about where Buffalo has been and also where it might be going.
The fortunes of the First Ward, and those who lived there, ebbed and flowed with the tide of industry. When industry boomed, so did the Ward. When times were lean, they were lean everywhere. “Buffalo’s First Ward” is the history of the neighborhood from its settling, through the initial shipping boom of the 1800s, the industrial boom of the early and mid-1900s, to its decline at the end of the 20th century and through to its rebirth today.

Brings back a lot of memories. My grandfather, Giovanni Bisci, was on the construction crew of the Lake & Rail Elevator in 1928 and then was hired to work inside (Robin Hood Flour, International Milling, International Multifoods, ConAgra, then closed). He retired from there in the early 1960s and my dad retired from there in 1996. My mom's mom and sister lived in the Perry Projects and we went to church at St. Brigid's with them a number of times. Wish I could watch this documentray but I do not live in Buffalo. Any chance we could purchase a copy? My dad would get a kick out of this.
