Ever wondered how the R13 differs from the RC? Listen to a side-by-side comparison!
These gorgeous clarinets came from Lisa's Clarinet Shop lisasclarinetshop.com
And I did not receive any kind of compensation for mentioning these businesses and products - my sentiments are untainted! :)
Who is Queen Reed?
Queen Reed is just a name that sounded good to me once when I was signing up for something musicky and didn't want to provide my real name. I am obviously not a queen. There is nothing I claim to rule, especially not reeds! And this rather presumptive title is at firm odds with the view I hold of myself as a performer, educator, creator, advocate, and occasionally (we've all been there), a complete imposter.
You, Me, We, have all had life and music experiences that help others when we share them. Along my way here, I have picked up a good deal about playing and teaching the barkystick we call the Clarinet. And when I zoom around the internet for help, advice, insight, I want the most specific, articulate help I can find. So this is what I offer - not only what works for me, but whenever I can figure it out, why and how I think it works.
Quite simply, Queen Reed wants to share everything she knows about playing, learning, and teaching clarinet with the hope that it will make your life easier, help you feel connected to others, build your knowledge - which is power, and enable you to get more and more joy out of your own barkystick.

Thank you for your video. I remember the RC instrument coming out many years ago it was the first prestige model. I did have a pair at one time but I'm much preferred they are 13 and still have my 19 70 R13 clarinets which I have customised with cork pads. I personally could get greater projection with the R 13 clarinet. Thank you for the Bella Kovacs excerpt God bless - Bill - UK

Ah yes the 1970's R13's - I have one and its a sweet little gem. I get a bigger, more harmonic-full sound with my R13 Prestige. It's hard to beat the sweetness of my 'vintage' R13 :)

PS beauty is in the EAR of the beholder. It's usually easier playing on the same Instruments when playing in an orchestra for tuning. Looking forward to your next video . Thank you so much I love hearing various videos during this lockdown. Buffet clarinets did not come to the UK until about 1970 the British firm Boosey and Hawkes dominated the British scene with the Imperial 1010 and imperial 9 to 6 professional clarinets. God bless. Personally I started to play buffet clarinet with the S1 model, which was marketed here to us in the U.K. as the large bore model but swooped to the R 13 in the 1970s, I even tried a pair of RC clarinets when they came out I think that you sound better on the RC clarinet and a smooth sound, on the other hand I like a bit of edge to the sound which I could get on the R 13, I hope that buffet do not neglect R 13 with the new" supermodels "coming out now. The R13 I believe is the most played professional clarinet in the world. It is the mark six of the clarinet word. Strangely both instruments came out in the 1950s Beauty is in the ear of the beholder - God bless - Bill

You are clearly able to blow much more air through the RC and it sounds great with your setup. I've owned and played both R-13 Prestige and Festival. R-13 with less resistance setup:Walter Grabner AW_1 personal I think is the model name at least previous model to his Chicago model with medium short facing and closed opening and Vandoren V-12 #3.5 reeds) and then with more resistance setup on the Festival: Charles Bay MO-L mouthpieces with Vandoren V12 #3.5+ reeds and for me I much prefer to be able to blow more air through the instrument plus the Bay has so much singing quality to it. Try for example the Baermann Adagio. So for me choosing a clarinet has to do with these things airflow,how it feels under my fingers, evenness of sound and tuning.

Both instruments are very good. Although, it is easier, with a proper mouthpiece and reed setup, to push the RC to sound like the R13. But it is more difficult to make the R13 sound as spread and as mellow as the RC. (That could be done, somewhat, with the change of bell, maybe?).
@queenreed373
@queenreed373 2 года назад
Good point. Yes, a bell switch will have an impact. Switching the barrel can help too. The Backun barrels tend to mellow out my sound, but then I lose some color and zippiness!

Excellent performance! I also have a RC prestige that I love but something has changed this year. The tone sounds different and flat. Is it a bad box of reeds, a failing pad, a mechanical issue or just me? It's so difficult when you can't can't pop round to get a service or see my teacher for advice. Regards from Manchester U.K.

Thank you! The first thing I think of when someone says their clarinet just isn't playing right/feeling right is . . . leaks. Small leaks can add up and create a noticeable issue. I suggest trying many different reeds, checking over your mouthpiece in case there is a tiny chip, and seeing if the problem is constant over time. I need to make a video on how to check for leaks!

It seems the responsiveness of the R13 is a bit better, probably it is also better for beginners. The RC needs more work to get a good and controlled sound.

Oooh -- yes, great point you make here. There is not one perfect clarinet that will meet every single situation. As you imply - orch needs a little push/bite/projection. and chamber work needs the kind of finesse that can be heard up close that will get lost in a huge group.

What’s your thoughts on R13 vs Festival? I’m thinking of buying a pair of R13 and wondering if they would be inferior to my Festival. Thanks
@queenreed373
@queenreed373 7 месяцев назад
Festivals are also really nice clarinets - for me they are warmer sounding, can be quite even, have less projection or "ping". I almost bought one once, but I hesitated because I just couldn't get altissimo D - G to be up to pitch without biting. But, whenever I have a chance to try them at a shop, I do - because they usually sound so pretty and warm! No matter what you want to buy, I think you must if at all possible try them first -- there are duds out there of every make and model of every brand of clarinet. You want one that sings for you, regardless of what brand/make/model it is. Happy shopping!

I see that you have new Prestiges with new mechanics. Could you please tell whether left C, second octave, is ok? On my clarinet (the number starts with 72) is was put in extremely low position together with a long stroke when you push it. Did they fix this or not?

Greetings from Brazil. Well, I'm looking for a new clarinet but, there are so many that I'm really confused hahaha. My hands are short and clarinets with no ergonomic keys doesn't help me a lot. From your long experience and expertise, which model you think that could be more appropriate for a person who has meddium hands? Buffet Crampon is exactly what I'm looking for. : )
@queenreed373
@queenreed373 Год назад
Good question. If you are sticking with Buffet, I believe they designed the Tosca with more ergonomics in mind (same with the Divine). Remember for at least the LH C# pinky key, you can have a repair person bend the key to be closer to where your pinky likes to land. A good repair person can help with ring height, and a small amount of tweaking other key angles throughout the clarinet. The main deal though is that clarinets are factory-made, so tone hole distances, sizes, key sizes and installation are all pretty standardized. For what it's worth, I've tried a few Backun's and they feel different under the hands -- maybe would feel more ergonomic to your hands. Happy Clarinet Hunting!

Hi dear Queen 😊a question- do you really need the Eb lever or you can do professional work with 17/6 ? Thanks
@queenreed373
@queenreed373 7 месяцев назад
Good question -- you absolutely do not need the Eb lever. It's fun to have, but there is always a way to sneak the pinkies around to make-do without the alternate Eb. On Bass clarinet -- that's a different story -- we need that lever (alternate low Ab) because of the added world of pinky crossings that occur since BCL's go to low Eb, and lower!

@queenreed373

I like them! Warm sound, beautiful in the higher register. For me, they play on the flat side, so either I would use my non-13 series mouthpieces, or would end up using a tighter embouchure than I really want to use. The Festivals win the Prestiges on mellow warmth, but the Prestiges win over the Festivals on Rich, powerful, woody-ness for me!

Could you explain in words what the differences are? That would be helpful. Thanks.
@queenreed373
@queenreed373 3 года назад
Well this is a great question - and it's one that is important for everyone to think about. The way we hear and conceive of sounds is largely personal and it has a lot to do (if you are playing the instrument you're listening to) with what kinds of sounds are coming up through the bones in your face while you play. For me, the RC is smoother, slightly mellower, creamier (as though there are fewer harmonics) - the Prestige for me sounds more woody, lively, richer, and fuller (as though the harmonics are more present). If I had to use colors to describe it - for me the RC is more like green and blue, while the Prestige is more like purple and blue. If I had to use flavors - for me the RC is more like creme brûlée and the Prestige is more like nutmeg. I hope this is helpful. . . it's always a good exercise to try to articulate our perceptions of sound.

Also -- if you want to find out the specs of the two clarinets, I would refer you over to Buffet's website - they'll have more info about bore design. And if it's not published there, at least you might find someone to contact at Buffet that will give you all the details!

I was using my B40Lyre - American pitch (13 series). I still have that particular mouthpiece, but I wore it out -- the edges were no longer "edgy" and it started to get unpredictable with pitch and color in my upper range. I have another B40Lyre that I use, but I also like the B40 (no lyre), though they have less color in the lower range for me.

the finish on some buffets looks very plasticy, even though they are wood. why
@queenreed373
@queenreed373 3 года назад
Buffet has some models that are unstained, so we see the wood grain better. And there are some that are stained - those stained models will have a more uniform look. And whenever wood is polished, it can take on a shinier effect. And there are some Buffet models that are lacquered - this will also make it look more like plastic. Over the years, just like with anything else, what's "in" changes. Sometimes shiny is popular, sometimes it's matte, sometimes it's woody/grainy that clarinetists seek. I think most manufacturers try to respond to these swinging popular preferences.

Ooh good point - get the clarinet that makes you happy!
