The team behind BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE: CARRY IT ON in conversation with TIFF in advance of its premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. The brilliant life and career of Indigenous musician and activist Buffy Sainte-Marie is explored in this documentary, which spotlights the barriers the performer crashed through across multiple mediums to emerge as an inspiration to fans like Joni Mitchell.
The 47th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 8 to 18, 2022. For more, visit tiff.net.
A tribute to Buffy Sainte-Marie’s extraordinary life and career, Madison Thomas’s Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On is as captivating and vital as its legendary subject, still the only Indigenous person to win an Oscar (in 1983 for Best Original Song “Up Where We Belong” which she co-wrote and was featured in An Officer and a Gentleman). She was also the first recurring Indigenous guest star on Sesame Street. A self-taught musician with a unique sense of phrasing and skilful songwriting, Sainte-Marie quickly became established in the 1960s folk-music mecca of Greenwich Village. Bob Dylan and fellow Canadians Robbie Robertson and Joni Mitchell counted themselves as fans. Sainte-Marie’s first hit, “Universal Soldier” - a hard-hitting indictment of those who blindly follow orders - became an international smash for her and for other artists like Donovan. Sainte-Marie is more than just a singer. Her integrity and insistence on addressing subjects others shied away from gained her great respect. When she appeared on the TV show The Virginian in 1968, she demanded the producers hire Indigenous actors. She remains one of the few pop artists to refuse to have her rights bought out by Elvis. (Presley famously demanded full ownership of almost every song he recorded.) But it also led to her being targeted. Angered by her activism, the FBI tried to derail her career by demanding radio stations refuse to play her records. Her art and activism have always been deeply intertwined. Sainte-Marie is also remarkably self-effacing. Asked about her Oscar, she simply says she really shouldn’t be the only Indigenous winner to date. This well-researched film divulges many lesser-known details of Sainte-Marie’s life, and brings together a fine collection of subjects whose love and admiration is palpable - most notably Joni Mitchell, who beams with affection when she talks about her. Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On is a much-needed, inspiring biography of one of our most revered and courageous artists.
Madison Thomas was born in Winnipeg and received her bachelor’s degree in filmmaking from the University of Winnipeg. She has extensive writing and directing credits in television and, in 2018, was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for her work on the award-winning series Taken. Her features include Ruthless Souls (19). Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On (22) is her latest film.

I just watched this documentary "Carry It On", on Crave. Really excellently done. However given the Pretendian allegations, it is sad that this prominently Winnipeg Indigenous film and production is now going to be dismissed as fiction and may be even disappear from public view. I have worked with Indigenous artists for the past 15 years, and let me tell you they do not take lightly to outsiders (Pretendians or otherwise) appropriating our culture , arts, and values for their own monetary gain. There are also so many Manitoba Indigenous artists, musicians, and personalities featured in this film, as well as the young amazing director Madison Thomas, who all are really genuine people, and are highly valued and recognized by our community. Now to have their words and reputations possibly negatively affected by lauding someone perpetrating a decades long deception breaks my heart and really pisses me off.

All of the Native artists who have on-stage featured or directly collaborated with Beverly Santamaria over the decades... it's devastating. Suddenly having their work questioned and dismissed. Modern colonialism can be captured perfectly by the snapshot a white Pretendian appearances on Sesame Street. She stole the spotlight, income and legacy from an unknown number of Native artists. I'm about as angry as it gets. The RCMP needs to open a fraud file on the multimillionaire white woman living on stolen land in Hawaii. Never really paid attention to her now after the revelation she's likely never was born indigenous at all I can notice the different color of her face and her hands.

After all she has done and continues to do for the indigenous community at over 80 years of age, people want to throw her and her amazing work under the bus because of a questionable birth certificate? Did you even listen?

Watch the 5th estate show before you comment. There is way more evidence than a birth certificate-which is not questionable btw

My first teacher in Native arts, culture and music was a white Italian-American Pretendian on Sesame Street. That is what colonization looks like in the modern world. For her last Juno win Beverly Santamaria was up against two Native artists who would be dead within the year. The man by heart attack. The young woman by suicide. That is one instance in the echoing damage the woman has done in 60 years of fraud. There was a 50,000$ windfall to go with the hardware. Beverly literally and figuratively stole the spotlight and income and legacy from an unknown number of Native artists. She stole the stories of Missing and Murdered Women and Children. Beverly committed fraud. She's the one who is ultimately responsible for ticking the "Native artist" boxes on legally binding documents. She is a multimillionaire living on a compound on stolen land in Hawaii. Remove all of her awards and honorariums, make her repay (with interest) all prize monies, take back the Junos, cancel the stamp, revoke the Order of Canada. Take back the Oscar that's sitting in the Smithsonian Institute in celebration of the first and only 'win'. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
